BRISTOL BEARS VS HARLEQUINS | 2020/21 BRISTOL BEARS VS HARLEQUINS | 2020/21
PAT LAM’S NOTES
4 5
Pat Lam has challenged his side to ‘put their flag
at the peak of the mountain’ as they prepare to
face the ‘serious threat’ of Harlequins in Saturday’s
Gallagher Premiership play-off semi-final at Ashton
Gate (1.30pm KO).
The Bears, who finished top of the table after 22 rounds, face a
free-flowing Quins side who scored 703 points during the regular
season – 79 more than any other side.
Lam’s men completed the league double over Quins, thanks to Kyle
Sinckler’s last-gasp try, converted by Callum Sheedy in March – but
the Bears Director of Rugby is under illusions about the task they
face this weekend.
“Quins have been on fire - we understand the challenge,” he said.
“It is no surprise to us, and we understand that we have got a
serious threat this week.”
“Semi-final rugby, the biggest lesson we took out of last season is
that we were disappointed as a team because we didn’t play our
best rugby and we want to make sure that we give ourselves every
opportunity by playing our best rugby.
“It is about a one-off game and getting the preparation right. It’s a
semi-final – winner takes all.
“Everyone watching the way they (Quins) play and the way we play,
there is a good chance it will be pretty open.”
The Bears led the Gallagher Premiership from round six, winning a
club record 17 matches along the way, but Lam knows that counts
for nothing heading into the play-offs.
“We set our goal once we got ahead (in the league) that it was a
race to the top of the mountain, and we won the race, but now at
the top of the mountain there are four teams.
“These next two weeks are about which team gets to put the flag
in the mountain, because that’s what is remembered. After this
weekend, only two teams will have the opportunity to put the flag
in.”
After sealing top spot in the Gallagher Premiership
regular season and booking a home semi final
against Harlequins, take a look back at some of the
records that Pat Lam’s Bears have smashed during
the 2020/21 campaign.
stat attack
CAN I KICK IT?
14 15
Points
mean prizes
The Bears’ tally of 85
points in the Gallagher
Premiership is the most
ever recorded by the club,
beating last season’s total
of 69. It is also the third
highest in Premiership
history, sitting behind
Exeter (86 points, 2018/19)
and Saracens (87 points,
2013/14).
On the
front foot
A total of 17 wins in the
Gallagher Premiership is
the most ever by a Bristol
side, eclipsing a previous
best of 14, achieved
during the 2006/07 and
2019/20 seasons. It’s also
the fewest number of
defeats recorded during
a regular season for the
club - Pat Lam’s side were
beaten just four times in
22 league games, beating
a previous best of seven,
also in the 2006/07 and
2019/20 seasons.
WATERTIGHT
In a season of broken
records, one of the
most satisfying for the
Bears is the 379 points
conceded - their fewest
ever in Premiership
history, beating 2006/07’s
previous best of 394.
Only Exeter Chiefs (356)
conceded fewer points
during the 2020/21
regular season.
LUCKY 13
Pat Lam’s all-action
Bears recorded 13 try
bonus points during the
2020/21 season, blowing
their previous best total
of eight in 1999/00 and
2019/20 out of the water.
The Bears scored 75 tries
during a record-breaking
campaign, just one fewer
than last season’s total,
but with the final game
of this season lost to
Covid-19.
Of the 75 tries scored
during the 2020/21
campaign, 57 of them
were converted by a
combination of Callum
Sheedy, Ioan Lloyd, Max
Malins, Tiff Eden and Sam
Bedlow. It’s the most
conversions kicked by a
Bristol side during the
regular season, beating
the 54 landed in 1999/00.
On the flipside, the
number of tries scored
and bonus points earned
meant fewer penalties
being kicked at goal. The
24 successfully slotted
this season is the club’s
lowest ever - previous
lowest was 27 in 2008/09.
CHARLES PIUTAU
preview
BEARS DOMINATE
PREMIERSHIP AWARDS
Charles Piutau says the Bears will feed off the
energy of the crowd when they welcome Harlequins
to Ashton Gate for the club’s first ever home semifinal
in the Gallagher Premiership.
20 21
After finishing the regular season
top of the tree in the Gallagher
Premiership, the Bears have
been recognised for the most
impressive campaign in the club’s
history with a series of individual
gongs.
Pat Lam was named Global Reach Director of Rugby of the Season, beating Billy Millard,
Alex Sanderson and Steve Borthwick to the prize.
The Bears led the way from round six, earning a record 17 wins along the way, and this
impressive return saw more players selected in the BT Sport Dream Team than any other
club. Five of Lam’s squad were included - Charles Piutau was selected in the team at fullback,
with his club colleagues Semi Radradha and Piers O’Conor taking their place in the
midfield.
Prop John Afoa and second row Chris Vui also get the nod, making up the Bears’
impressive influence on the star-studded XV.
The last 18 months have played host to the meteoric rise of Ioan Lloyd, and the 20-yearold
has continued his upward trajectory, which already includes two Wales caps, with
the Land Rover Discovery of the Season award. Lloyd, who has starred at fly half, full
back and wing this season, saw off competition from Leicester Tigers’ Freddie Steward,
Wasps’ Alfie Barbeary, Harlequins’ Will Evans, Sale Sharks’ Bevan Rodd and London
Irish’s Ollie Hassell-Collins. The Land Rover Discovery of The Season award is designed
to recognise the most exciting young rugby players emerging during the 2020-21
campaign.
Elsewhere, the Bears’ electrifying brand of rugby saw them dominate The Famous
Grouse Try of the Season vote. Siva Naulago claimed the top prize for his stunning
effort against London Irish in the mouth-watering 34-34 draw in February. The Fijian
powerhouse notched his second score of the contest after a brilliant exchange of
passes with Charles Piutau, eventually racing away to cross for his third try of the
season.
Naulago’s effort narrowly edged out that of Bears teammate Semi Radradra against
Leicester Tigers for the end-of-season gong, with the latter finishing off a sumptuous
breakaway move initiated by Siale Piutau.
Finally, inspirational skipper, Steven Luatua and exciting back, Piers O’Conor both made
the shortlist for Gallagher Player of the Season, but were edged out by Exeter Chiefs’
record-breaking number eight, Sam Simmonds.
Pat Lam’s men finished the regular season at the top of the table,
but Piutau knows that counts for nothing when it comes to finals
rugby.
“The guys are very excited. It’s a goal that we’ve had since the
start of the season and we’ve worked really hard throughout a
long campaign, but there is a great buzz around the place and
we’re just enjoying our preparation.
“We’ve taken a lot of learnings along the way, and we know that as
a team, we’ve got to be at our best. We understand the occasion
and there’s a mentality and edge when it comes to semi-final
rugby.
“We’ve spoken about tomorrow not being guaranteed, so we’ve got
to go out there and put in a performance we know we’re capable
of, sticking to the work we’ve done all year, being on top of that
and nailing it to you give us the best chance of transferring that
on to the pitch.
“The atmosphere will be electric on Saturday – we experienced
3,000 against Gloucester and that felt like 27,000, so we know the
fans are really going to bring the energy and we’re going to feed
off that as a team, and hopefully put in a performance to make
them proud.”
PROJECT RUGBY
TAKES CENTRE
STAGE AT THE GATE
‘Tackling Health’
takes over
Ashton Gate
Community Foundation Coach, Rich Hynes
on the progress of Project Rugby:
Tuesday 25th May, Ashton Gate 3pm.
Glorious spring sunshine, cool drinks, and
suntan lotion all round? Nope – torrential
rain and wind with an occasional lukewarm
coffee was the order of the day. Did it stop
us? Absolutely not.
Project Rugby’s annual celebration at
Ashton Gate rolled into action once again
to showcase the skills of the young players
who have contributed massively to another
hugely successful year. Students from
Broadlands Academy, Fairfield School,
Ashton Park and St Katherine’s combined
to see over 50 young people taking part,
with many not having touched a rugby ball
six weeks ago. Thanks to their engagement
over the six weeks and the amazing
support of the teaching staff these young
people have experienced playing sport in a
premiership environment and loved every
minute of it.
Project Rugby has navigated its way
through COVID under a huge cloud of
uncertainty to produce its most successful
season to date. How do we measure
success? Officially its based on the number
of young people who join their local
rugby club as a result of taking part in the
sessions. This year that number currently
stands at 13, with several other waiting in
the wings to join when clubs restart for
pre-season.
Unofficially? Smiles, laughter, fun,
inclusion, and the positivity shown by all
in attendance would suggest the impact
of rugby has been huge. We believe our
sport stands alone because of its core
values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment,
Discipline & Sportsmanship, and everyone
who took part in the event showed this
in abundance. ‘Bound to say that you
are doing the coaching’ might well be a
response – so let us prove it. Project Rugby
Children from local primary schools
gathered at Ashton Gate Stadium to take
part in the latest Tackling Health festival as
part of our Celebration of Sport event.
The much scaled down event, due to
pandemic restrictions, didn’t dampen the
spirits of those who attended, although the
weather nearly did.
Community Coach, Jake Ellis said: “It was
great to see children celebrating their
engagement and rugby development by
playing fixtures at the home of Bristol
Bears.
“It was clear that everyone enjoyed the
chance to get out of their classrooms
and schools after so many restrictions in
recent times, and we hope to see children
and their families supporting the Bears
from the stand sometime soon.
“The programme not only introduces
children to tag rugby, it also highlights
the importance of diet and exercise to our
health and wellbeing as well as the lives of
professional rugby players. Who knows, we
may even see some of the children playing
for the Bears in years to come.”
Premiership Rugby’s Tackling Health
programme is an interactive project for
children aged seven to eight which takes
a holistic approach to teaching children
about their own health, wellbeing and
about leading a healthy lifestyle with a
rugby focus.
32 33
Delivered nationally by Premiership Rugby
clubs across England, and in partnership
with the Greggs Foundation, the key
aims of the project are to improve young
people’s understanding of what constitutes
healthy eating and a healthy diet and to
increase levels of physical activity. The
programme see’s Bristol Bears Community
Foundation staff deliver up to six weeks of
classroom and practical sessions with the
chance for schools to join us for regular
festivals.
Thanks to all who participated, not least
the teachers and adults that supported
getting children to the stadium.
BRISTOL BEARS academy news
Senior Academy Manager, Gethin Watts has reflected
on a year of challenges and progress following the
conclusion of the Academy season.
The Covid-19 pandemic created a host of hurdles for the club’s
Academy setup, with a loss of fixtures and a reduction in training
time, but Watts says he is proud of how the players and staff have
adapted to the uncertainty and disruption.
“Despite the recent difficulties the Academy programme, including
the U18 has been able to achieve lots of its objectives in the last 12
months.
“We’ve missed out on a full games programme and face-to-face
connections with players, parents, teachers and coaches, that
make the development process more complete and holistic.
“But despite these obstacles, we have planned to overcome these
challenges and seen the players grow and develop in line with the
values and principles associated with the ‘Bears Way.’
“Adaptation has been the key word over the last 12 months and we
have learned some great lessons that have helped shape our plan
going forward into the next year.
“Expectations associated with the vision of the club means that all
associated with the pathway need to raise their game if we are to
meet the challenges of the future.
“We are working hard to prepare the players for the standards of
tomorrow, as we know that standing still and resting on our laurels
will mean that we will fall behind.
“One of our key pillars is the passion we have in wanting more
‘homegrown’ players. The pathway is continually evolving and the
opportunity for your local players is better than ever before.
“However, that opportunity comes hand in hand with the
responsibility to raise the standard in the club’s next chapter. The
‘Bears Way’ demands that players highly skilled players that play
at an intensity that is unrelenting. This presents challenges for
the next generation that will need: hard work, dedication and a
mindset for excellence.
“We are all up for the challenge and we have willing partners in
Xledger who share our vision. We must thank Xledger for their
continued support this season.”
Jack Adams
1986-2021
Bristol Bears partner with
Pledgeball, an organisation that
encourages fans to make small
lifestyle changes that, as a group
of fans, significantly reduce our
impact on the planet.
The semi-final play-off against Harlequins
is a Pledgeball event: fans can make
sustainable lifestyle pledges together
as Bears fans. It is a challenge - what
quantity of carbon emissions can Bears
fans save?
Visit the club website to make your
pledge as a Bears supporter and to
see the impact you’re having together
(and to be in with a chance of winning a
signed Bears ball).
It’s time for fans to demonstrate their
collective power:
• 6,606 supporters (the number allowed
to watch this semi-final) simply
halving their dairy consumption saves
the same amount of carbon emissions
as taking over 590 cars off the road
• The Bears Twitter followers all
switching to using a reusable cup
equates to taking over 2,200 cars off
the road
And their influence stretches beyond this,
as the impact of them ripple out.
Katie Cross, Founder of Pledgeball, said
‘This is such a great opportunity to
showcase the potential power of sports
fans. As a collective, the Bears’ fans could
really make waves. I’m excited to see
what they could do and very grateful for
their support.
As a Bristol resident, I am especially
delighted that the Bears are involved and
with such a game.
38 39
Fans can begin the movement that brings
the change we need to see. Come on Bears!’
It is with great sorrow that Bristol
Bears announce the death of
former player Jack Adams. Jack,
a centre who played for the club
for two seasons from 2009, had
been suffering from cancer and
was only 34 years of age.
Jack Paul Michael Adams was born in
Gloucester. He was educated at St Peter’s
School and was capped by England at
Under 16 and Under 18 level. He played his
early club rugby for Brockworth, and he
came through the Gloucester Academy to
make his Gloucester first team debut as a
replacement for Mike Tindall in 2005. In all
he played 35 matches for Gloucester, and
during his time at the club he appeared as
a dual-registered player for Moseley. He
was also a member of the England Sevens
squad, where his skills earned him the
nickname ‘Ghost’. Jack was unfortunate
to be injured after being selected for the
England Under 21 squad; his rugby career
was often blighted by injury.
Jack joined Bristol at the start of the 2009-
10 season. This was the season after the
team had been relegated from the Guinness
Premiership, and he was a member of the
squad which finished at the top of the
Championship, only to lose a two-legged
play-off final against Exeter. Bristol did
not challenge for promotion the following
season, but they did win the British & Irish
Cup, defeating Bedford at the Memorial
Stadium in the final. Jack was a member of
the winning side. In total he played 57 first
team games for Bristol, scoring 13 tries,
including two in a bizarre 40-36 victory at
Birmingham & Solihull.
After leaving Bristol, Jack played for
Moseley again, before having spells at both
Cinderford and Chinnor. He was a member
of the England Counties XV and he coached
at Brockworth and Hucclecote. Jack was
very popular with his fellow players, and
many tributes have been paid to him. All at
Bristol Bears send their sincere sympathy
to Jack’s family at this terribly sad time.
An
BEAR COUNTRY
column
by Will Reid
lineup on BT Sport
So, there we have it.
The end of another Premiership regular
season and the Bears are sitting at the top.
If Carlsberg did Gallagher Premiership
campaigns…
Now, who could honestly say five years
ago that they were confident Bristol would
be finishing the 20/21 season - top of the
league in a position they had held since
round six?
As much as we all love the jaw dropping
moments from the likes of Semi, Charles,
Callum and, yes, even John Afoa, it’s been
the development of the squad that has
been so encouraging to me.
It’s been those disappointing games such
as London Irish away that shaped our
season in only a positive way – just as that
infamous Worcester thumping we received
two seasons ago did.
Those moments when your ideology
and your confidence are threatened is
where you grow the most, and each time
Literally nobody.
40 our Bears just came back stronger and
41
Well, except maybe the Lansdown family,
Chris Booy, Pat Lam and Mark Tainton.
with more determination to succeed and
inspire our community.
After all, they’re the brains behind the
operation. The ones with the vision, the
culture, the dream.
It’s they who took us from those dark,
disappointing Championship play-off days
and catapulted us to Premiership play-off
Professionals.
I think it’s impossible to understate the
work those three have done not only for
the club but for the profile of our great
city – it’s all well and good playing great
rugby, but it means nothing if you can’t
translate it to success on and off the pitch.
And thanks to the coaches and our
amazing group of players, we have done
and continue to do just that.
Our play this season - for the most part -
has been outstanding.
Those irritating games against Sale will
push us on further still – because with a
mantra like” ‘you never lose, you learn,’
how can you possibly fail?
It’s been a magnificent season, full of topclass
rugby, heart-warming moments, low
points and laughs.
We’ve come so far from where we
began, and amidst the spectacle and the
expectation we can lose sight of what
we’ve done as a club.
So, drink it in and enjoy it, Bears fans.
We’ve cheered and shouted and supported
the boys for moments like these.
Premiership play-offs? This is Bear
Country now.
Up the Bears.
