WINNING ENTRY
A guy stuck his head into a barbershop and asked, “how long before
I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around the shop full of
customers and said, “about 2 hours.” The guy left. A few days later,
the same guy stuck his head in the door and asked “how long before
I can get a haircut?” The barber looked around at the shop and said
“about 3 hours.” The guy left. A week later, the same guy stuck his
head in the shop and asked, “how long before I can get a haircut?”
The barber looked around the shop and said “about an hour and a
half.” The guy left. The barber turned to his friend and said, “hey, Bob
do me a favour, follow him and see where he goes. He keeps asking
how long he has to wait for a haircut, but he never comes back.” A
little while later, Bob returned to the shop, laughing hysterically. The
barber asked, “so where does he go when he leaves?” Bob looked up,
wiped the tears from his eyes and said, “your house!”
EASY STREET FOOD
Street food is my absolute
favourite. Whether it’s tapas, fish
and chips, burgers or something
more exotic, I love it all. I am a
regular at the Sneinton Street
Food events – if you haven’t been,
look them up on Facebook and get
booked in!
By defi nition, street food consists of readyto-eat
food or drink sold by a vendor in a
public place from a trailer or van. In Arnold
we were lucky to have the Squeaky Beaver
poutine van parked in the Waggon and
Horses car park fortnightly over lockdown.
Poutine is a Canadian version of cheesy
chips with gravy. I have included my own
version opposite, but the squeaky cheese
curds are really hard to replicate so I used
a Polish curd cheese called Twarog. You
could also use the block mozzarella.
Korean street food is really popular at the
minute, especially the double fried crispy
chicken. Stick this in a bun/cob/batch add
some chilli sauce and coleslaw and you
have a perfect combo. My recipe is shallow
fried as I don’t have a deep fat fryer. It works
perfectly well and is better for you too.
Finally, who doesn’t love a churro? These
tasty sweet treats originated from Spain
and Portugal and are made of fried dough.
A bit like a donut. The recipe opposite is
slightly healthier as we bake the dough.
They are then tossed in cinnamon sugar
and accompanied by a chocolate sauce.
Poutine (Freestyle!)
This recipe is super fl exible. If you can
be bothered to make your own chips
it will elevate the recipe. The key is the
gravy. Once that is nailed – the rest
is up to you. You can add whatever
topping you fancy. Let your imagination
run wild. Pulled pork, crispy bacon,
shredded duck and plum sauce…
The recipe can easily be adapted for
vegetarians or vegans.
Poutine Gravy
3tbsp cornfl our
2tbsp water
6 tbsp unsalted butter
4 tbsp plain fl our
600ml beef stock
300ml chicken stock
Method
In a small bowl, dissolve the cornfl our
in the water. In a small saucepan, melt
the butter then add the fl our. Cook
gently for 5 mins. Then add the stock
and half the cornfl our. Keep stirring until
the sauce thickens. You are looking for
a nice thick gravy. Add more cornfl our
if necessary. Season with pepper (you
may not need salt depending on what
stock you use).
1 x bag frozen chips (or homemade) –
cooked as per instructions
2 x 250g pack Twarog curd cheese
or block mozzarella – broken into
small chunks
Topping of your choice.
Putting the poutine together is easy. It
can be a messy business so we used
pasta bowls to serve.
Start with a generous layer of chips,
scatter some cheese chunks, pour
over the hot gravy then top with
whatever you choose. We used BBQ
brisket with some extra BBQ sauce
then scattered the top with the spring
onions and gherkins and a dollop of
sour cream. Then dig in!
Baked Churros
For the Churros
225ml cold water
115g unsalted butter
½ tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp brown sugar
145g plain white fl our
¼ tsp salt
3 x medium eggs
For the coating
115g caster sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
For dipping
200g chocolate (melted)
Method
Heat the oven to 200°C. Line a large
baking tray with greaseproof paper.
Melt the water, butter, sugar & salt until
it simmers. Then add fl our and beat
until you have a smooth dough (like
you would make choux pastry). Cook
this for 1 min, then remove from the
heat. Beat the eggs with the vanilla
and gradually add to the dough until
you have a thick paste. Using a piping
bag with a star nozzle (about 1.5cm
width) pipe 8cm lines onto the tray
(about 2cm apart). Put another baking
tray with 240ml of boiling water in the
bottom of the oven and this will keep
the churros soft. Bake for 18 mins until
golden. Turn off the oven and leave
in for 10 mins. Place the sugar and
cinnamon in a plastic bag and toss the
churros to coat. Melt the chocolate in
a bowl over a simmering pan of water.
Serve the churros with the melted
chocolate in a dipping bowl.
Korean Fried Chicken
Burgers
For the chicken
4 large boneless, skinless chicken thighs
2cm piece ginger – peeled & grated
100g cornfl our
1tsp celery salt
Chilli fl akes – pinch (optional)
Salt (pinch)
Black pepper – to taste
Sunfl ower oil for frying
4 x Brioche buns
Iceberg lettuce
For the sauce
2tbsp Korean chilli paste (gochujang)
2tbsp runny honey
2 tbsp brown sugar
2tbsp soy sauce
2 garlic cloves – minced
1tbsp sesame oil
2cm piece ginger - grated
Method
Trim any fat off the chicken. Put in
a zip lock bag and season with salt
and pepper and the ginger. Leave for
15 mins. In another zip lock bag add
the cornfl our, celery salt, chilli (if using)
and salt & pepper. Add chicken to the
cornfl our bag and make sure they are
well covered with the mix.
Heat 2cm oil in a large, deep frying
pan. Add the chicken and fry for a few
minutes on both sides until starting to
crisp. Remove and drain on kitchen
paper. Leave for a couple of minutes
and re-fry in the hot oil until very
crisp. Remove and drain again on
kitchen paper.
Meanwhile make the sauce by adding
everything to a small saucepan. Simmer
gently until the sugar has dissolved and
you have a syrupy texture.
Get the brioche burger buns, shredded
iceberg lettuce, add the fried chicken,
top with sauce and get stuck in.
We served ours with coleslaw and
homemade oven chips.

Some Like it HOT
We all remember the
old fashioned Red Hot
Poker plants with their
tall, impressive heads
of flower, red at the top
and yellow at the bottom
and great mounds of
leaves, flowering away in
a neglected spot in the
garden.
Eye-catching they certainly
are and they have come a
long way from these gaudy
giants with lots of colours and
sizes now available for every
type of garden.
Kniphofia, as they are properly
called come from Southern
Africa. The ones we grow
in the garden largely grow
on high mountains so they
are cold hardy although you
may find plants or seeds of
sub-tropical species that will
need protection in winter. As
a rule of thumb those with
very narrow, almost chive-like
leaves are less hardy.
The best way to grow them
is in plenty of sun and a rich,
fertile soil with plenty of
summer moisture. Here they
will have more and larger
flowers. Here are a few of
my favourites.
“Timothy” is very different
from the standard poker with
his salmony orange flowers
on 2ft / 60cm stems in midsummer
he is more suitable
for a small garden. The large
yellow and green flowers
of “Bees’ Lemon” are good
partners with hot colours as
well as paler pastels.
Some pokers are long and
slender adding a gracefulness
to the flowers. “Jenny
Bloom” is one such with
softly coloured peaches
and cream flowers. “Toffee-
Nosed” is similar but has more
distinctly caramel and white
flowers. “Fiery Fred” is tall,
slender and burning with heat
through July and August and
a must for the hot-coloured
garden. The heads of “Shining
Sceptre” are elegant and fiery
orange and gold. The giant of
pokers is “Nobilis” which can
send up 6ft / 180cm or more
high red and yellow flowers.
Pokers can be propagated by
division after flowering or in
late spring from late flowering
ones. Seed will be variable
but does produce good
plants – the colours may be a
surprise! Sow on the surface
of moist seed compost – do
not bury the seed just press it
lightly onto the surface – in
late winter in warmth such
as a heated propagator and
transplant as soon as they
are big enough to handle and
then wait for the fireworks
when they flower!
Tim Saunders is an
advanced motorist and
journalist. He has always
been passionate about
motoring and regularly
reviews cars from the
leading manufacturers. His
youtube channel receives over 15,000
views each month with the videos being watched
The Volkswagen T-Roc is
a reasonable sized Sports
Utility Vehicle suited to an
active family. We should
get on fine then.
True to VW design it is smart,
sleek and clinical both inside
and out; something to be proud
of – the architecture of the
bodywork gives much interest
thanks to the lines and general
boxiness. Gone are the days it
seems of sweeping curves.
On the road it’s fun to drive,
fast when required and in fact
if the driver is too zealous with
their right foot the front wheels
can lose their grip on the road.
There’s a good driving position.
Its six speed manual gearbox
is smooth to operate and a
pleasure to use. The cruise
control on the other hand is
one of the more complicated
to operate, so much so that
it’s too awkward for me and I
give up.
Inside, it’s comfortable and
practical. There’s a neat
drawer underneath the driver’s
seat providing some useful
storage. But it’s very black
Volkswagen T-Roc
indeed, which seems the
way these days in terms of
both interiors and economic
forecasts…. Not a bit of colour,
unless it is the electric blue of
the digital displays. But then
it is the Black Edition so what
do I expect? “Perhaps there’s
a Green Edition,” questions
Henry (5) who loves anything
of this colour, especially
dinosaurs. The soul craves
it, like music, good food and
drink. These days we all
need colour in our lives for
our mental health; far more
important than ramming
technology down our throats,
that frankly much of the time
we don’t need. If it’s possible
to add colour inside our homes
without breaking the bank
then it should also be possible
inside the family runabout,
which let’s face it is an
extension of our personalities.
The first time I reverse the
T-Roc up our driveway, which
does slope up hill it rolls
uncomfortably close to our
dining room wall. Thankfully
my reactions allow for us to
make a hasty, if rather speedy
exit. The auto hold function
more than 275,000 times. Tim aims to boost his
subscribers from 300 to over 1,000.
His first report on a BMW 520i was published in the
Dorset Echo when he was 17 (just after passing his
driving test) in 1995. He went on to become business
and motoring editor at the Bournemouth Echo. Now,
his engaging and informative reviews are published
in newspapers and magazines in the UK and abroad.
does not seem to work in such
a situation no matter what I do,
which is unnerving. There is an
electric parking brake.
In the operating manual
Volkswagen devotes a chapter
to Cyber Security on page
182. Who would have thought
this necessary a few years
ago? It alerts the driver to the
fact that when connecting a
mobile phone to the vehicle’s
system, if it is contaminated
with malware, this could infect
the car and ultimately pose a
risk to driver safety and worse.
That’s a bit frightening.
The T-Roc is a capable car,
whose boot accommodates a
typical weekly shop.
Overall, I do like it as I do
an imperfect friend. Drive it
yourself and see what you think
but leave that phone at home.
A new Nottingham Forest book featuring ten City
Ground legends has raised hundreds of pounds for
the club’s Powerchair team.
‘Talking Reds’ features chapters by Garibaldi greats
including Steve Chettle, Bryan Roy, Mark Crossley and
Chris Bart-Williams, telling their stories of life with the
Tricky Trees.
Copies have gone all over the world with some fans
calling it ‘the best Forest book in years’.
Author Keith Harrison, a football writer and Leader
in Residence at the University of Central Lancashire,
said: ‘It’s a great read for Forest fans, taking you right
inside the dressing room for some of the biggest
games in the club’s history.’
10% of any profits from the book are going to
Nottingham Forest Powerchair FC, who play in the
Muscular Dystrophy UK Powerchair Championship
and features players in powered wheelchairs, playing
a skilful and fast-paced game of football.
A spokesman for the club Matt Smith said: ‘We’re all
chuffed by the book. It looks great and we’re really
grateful for the donation.’
Keith added: ‘We’ve had great support from the former
players, so we’d like to thank everyone for their help.’
The book is available on Amazon and also at a
discounted launch price of £9.99 from:
A Wartime Working Girl adapted by Maureen Newton
In 1940 the firm of Charles Williams, tailors was
bombed out of the East End of London. It was headed
by three sons, Cyril, Harry and Charles Williams who
were Jewish by faith. The firm came to Hucknall on
Caddaw Avenue in a building so vast that part was
sectioned off for the Splendor factory. Recruits were
bussed in from all parts of Nottinghamshire and
Hucknall of course and merged each morning to help
the war effort by manufacturing uniforms for the Army
and Air Force.
A canteen was provided. We had a ten minute break for
tea morning and afternoon with 40 minutes for dinner
which made a break of 1 hour all day. If you were late
back after dinner you were locked out and bus people
spent the afternoon on the park until bus time at 6pm.
Some of those I remember working with are:- Mary
Graves, Dulcie Newton, Nellie Roberts, Audrey Jackson,
Dorothy Lee, Jean Tomlinson, Jean Mcauley, Audrey
Daft, Sylvia Harvey, Audrey Toop, Daisy Johnson, Flo
Shilton and Iris and Joan the Selby twins.
The pay was poor. 21 shillings for a 14 year old
working from 8am to 6pm weekdays and 8am to
12.45pm on Saturday. When bus fares and stoppages
had been deducted the meagre pay packet amounted
to only 13/4d but piece workers could earn up to £4 a
week. Everyone clocked on; woe betide you if you were
late. Once inside the factory you went to your own
section where there were long benches of lockstitch,
overlock, blind stitch, button hole and bartack
machines followed by finishers and hand sewers.
There were three sections dealing with different jobs
to make the uniforms. Some made sleeves, some
linings, etc. which followed the garment; each section
adding more until at the far side of the building they
were complete and went to the room full of Hoffman
presses.
A Mr. Platt was the general manager who wore a big
ring and poked you with it when telling you off. He
used the term bastard a lot which offended all the local
work force but was accepted by the Londoners who
came with the firm. Although the massive work room
had no partitions it was classed as separate rooms.
The cutting room was manned by skilled cutters who
considered themselves in reserved occupations.
Youngsters, boys and girls, were used as donkeys,
piled high with bundles of garments until they could
only stumble from one row of machines to the next.
When another intake came after leaving school the first
lot were promoted to be trained for suitable work. The
dust levels were very high as each fabric handler went
like the clappers on piece work. To encourage this
‘Music While You Work’ and ‘Workers Playtime’ was
relayed over the wireless. Security against pilfering
was 100%.
It was hard work but we were happy in a friendly
way. You worked all week and then went out with the
same people sharing your brothers with the other
girls at the weekend. We danced at the Gaiety Dance
Hall on Parker Street, Hucknall or visited the Scala
or Byron Cinema (pictured below). At Christmas we
made greeting cards and the whole factory floor was
festooned with tape and cotton wool as decorations
and we had a fuddle – each person contributing
something to eat. The Williams people all went back
to London to celebrate the Jewish Rosh Hashanah
and the Passover leaving Mr. Tilmar, a refugee who
escaped from Germany, in charge.
After the demob suits were finished the firm went
back down south to Rochester. A few locals went with
Gemini
(Seven of Coins, Nine of Wands,
King of Cups)
You have long hankered after a change of
course, and the chance to head off into
uncharted territory, and it’s going to happen this
month, so don’t back off or shy away. Be brave,
be braver than you perhaps feel. The Seven of
Coins and Nine of Wands show that you can
handle whatever lies ahead, and the King of
Cups reveals there are prizes worth winning!
Fire signs- Leo, Aries,
Sagittarius
(King of Coins, Eight of Coins,
Two of Swords)
Dig in, press on, and don’t give up now! The Eight
of Coins is a reassurance that hard work and
determination will get you where you want to go.
The King of Coins shows this is related to money,
work, home or health, and the Two of Swords
reveals an important decision will unlock your
momentum and get things moving again. Don’t
hold back. Press on!
Earth signs- Capricorn,
Virgo, Taurus
(Judgment, Six of Cups, The Hermit)
You’re taking a ~time out~ with The Hermit to
think and refl ect on your story so far, and where
next. This is serious, solo business. Judgment and
the Six of Cups have you dwelling on the past,
but in a positive way- looking for life lessons,
wisdom, insight and even people, places or
activities you want to revive and bring into your
present and future.
Water signs- Cancer,
Pisces, Scorpio
(Five of Wands, The Hanged Man,
Nine of Swords)
If you don’t get whatever is really bothering you,
with the painful Nine of Swords, off your chest
then you’ll remain in ~limbo~ with the stagnant
Hanged Man. The Five of Wands shows you
might need to have a disagreement or confl ict,
but it’s cathartic and necessary. You need to
express yourself, push past this blockage, and
move on from this frustrating episode. Be honest.
vaccinating your pet
by Scarsdale Vats
Mon-Fri: 9am - 5.30pm
Sat: 9am - 4.30pm Sun: 9.30am - 2pm
Dog vaccinations
Vaccinating your pet is a
key step in protecting your
pet against life threatening
diseases.
Vaccinations boost your
pet’s immunity and act as
the first line of defence
against some very nasty
and potentially fatal
diseases.
Puppies get protection initially in life from their mother’s
milk and then as they are weaned this protection wanes
and thus vaccinations are required to maintain it.
Typically, we vaccinate puppies at 8, 10 and 12 weeks of
age, to allow for early socialisation at 11 weeks of age.
The primary puppy course acts to stimulate the body’s
immune system to produce a protective response then
the yearly booster afterwards maintains this immunity.
Cat vaccinations
Vaccinating your cat is very important for their health
and for the control of infectious disease, not only for
your cat but for the cat population as a whole. Kittens
can typically be vaccinated from 9 and 12 weeks of
age. The greater the proportion of the population that
is vaccinated the lower the risk for your cat, even when
they themselves are vaccinated.
Rabbit vaccinations
Rabbit vaccination is available against two fatal
diseases – Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic
Disease. Rabbits can typically be vaccinated from 7
weeks of age. We strongly recommend that all pet
rabbits be vaccinated on an annual basis with the
combined vaccination for Myxomatosis and Viral
Haemorrhagic Disease.
Booster vaccination after an initial course is vital for all
rabbits. Remember Scarsdale Vets always combines
vaccinations with a full health assessment.
We routinely vaccinate dogs, cats and rabbits against
common viruses. For further information on vaccinating
your pets, please visit www.scarsdalevets.com or call
01332 678333.
Are you getting enough protein?
So many people who come to us for health
coaching aren’t consuming anywhere near
enough protein in their daily diet.
Through the media and clever marketing, protein
gets linked to building muscle, which for a lot of
people, particularly women, worries them. They
don’t want to get too big or muscular. So protein is
avoided and calories made up elsewhere, often with
carbs (which are not the devils work, stick with me…)
Let me explain…
We need carbs and fats in our diet, this is 100% fact
and neither should be considered ‘bad’. BUT… we
do need to be mindful of how much we consume.
Effectively, carbs are sugars once they are broken
down into fuel, and we only need so much fuel to
actually use as energy. The overspill we consume
will need to be stored, EVEN IF YOU ARE WITHIN
YOUR CALORIES (now read this again before
moving on).
So, this is the first part. Calories consumed need to
be a healthy combination of ALL macronutrients.
Having too much fuel can still lead to seeing little to
no effect on body fat loss.
NOW, let’s talk protein and its many key benefits -
which aren’t just for building muscle.
Protein is made up of amino acids (the building
blocks of muscle). It repairs torn and broken-down
muscle fibre. So essentially, you have to be creating
damage to muscle, like resistance training in the
gym, for muscle to repair and grow. Consuming
protein alone will not make muscle grow.
Next, protein helps with food satiety - it keeps you
fuller for longer.
AND it helps with hormone regulation and aids
recovery of the body.
It’s important to remember that our bodies don’t
store protein, so we need to eat it every day. So
how much protein should we be consuming daily to
unlock these key benefits?
Around 1g of protein per 1lb of bodyweight. So,
180lb in weight = 180g of protein. A scale of 0.6-
1.5g of protein per 1lb of body weight is used when
working out your intake needs.
My mini challenge for you:
At your next meal, see how much protein you are
actually consuming. Protein can come into your
diet in many ways, not just from meat and protein
shakes. Think eggs, tofu, beans and seafood. Assess
your daily protein intake for a week. Remember you
need to spread the consumption out over the day.
Are you close to 1g per 1lb of body weight per day?
Main Meal Idea
KOREAN PORK BOWL (Serves 1)
Ingredients
½ tbsp coconut oil
180g lean pork thinly sliced
1 small carrot
½ courgette
4 mushrooms – sliced
½ red pepper
175g cooked basmati rice
For the sauce
1 tsp hot chilli sauce
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp honey
1 clove garlic – crushed
½ thumb size piece ginger – finely chopped
1 tbsp dark soy sauce
Method
1. Melt half the coconut oil in a large pan/wok
2. Add the pork in single layers and cook for 1-2
mins each side. Then set aside
3. Peel the carrot into thin strips and slice the
courgette into matchsticks
4. Melt remaining oil in the pan, stir fry the carrot,
courgette and mushrooms for 2 mins.
5. Remove from heat and allow to sit for 2-3 mins.
6. For the sauce, mix together all of the ingredients
and set aside.
7. Place the cooked rice in a bowl and place the
pork and veg on top.
8. Drizzle the sauce over the top and serve
As I gaze forlornly into my pathetic little wardrobe, I
often ponder the question, how should a 55 year old
dress?
Are Doc Martins still acceptable? (yes), can I still
get away with skinny jeans? (yes, but only if the
waistband comes up to my chin and they are 100%
lycra, so jeggings then…), how about a cropped top?
(Absolutely no chance. Whatsoever). Having said
that, I recently purchased a new sports bra. I didn’t
realise it was a pull on. What a palaver. After much
huffing and puffing (I actually googled it), I eventually
squeezed into it. There was a bit of back and arm
overspill, but I reckon I got away with it (another
advantage of Zoom classes). Throughout the class, I
was stressing about how the hell I was going to get the
flipping thing off. Sure enough, no amount of twisting,
pulling and contorting helped. I ended up calling for
backup and between us Gary and I managed to release
me. Needless to say, this is now on Vinted (my new
favourite second- hand clothes app).
Clothes shopping has always been extremely low
down on my list of things I like to do and when I do
buy anything, I have a ridiculous habit of saving them
for ‘best’. Which, let’s face it, over the last year has
been never! I recently found a pair of jeans that I had
been ‘saving’ and now they don’t even fit me! Thanks
lockdown.
This year I am trying to avoid buying new clothes, so
Vinted has come in handy, although it hasn’t started
particularly well. The first two things I bought don’t
fit. Jeans too small (are they making things smaller
these days?) and sandals too big. It appears that I am
expanding and shrinking in all the wrong places.
The
Fashion
Tale
of black jeans, black top and black boots. This avoids
the inevitable critique from my boys who like to think
they know a bit about fashion (they don’t, at least not
over 50’s fashion, if that is even a thing).
To be fair, in my house, I get off lightly, possibly due
to the fact the kids know that I am only ever a hemline
comment away from tearful hysterics 24/7. However,
poor Gary only has to put a pair of slim jeans on and
the kids rip into him.
Previously I have waxed lyrical about elasticated
waists being a game changer. I now want to share
another line I have crossed. Gone are those awful
skimpy pants (cheese wire) and in come the rice bags
(comfy). Yes, let’s hear it for great big Bridgit Jones
style knickers! I recently caught myself tucking my
thermal top into them and thinking, when did this
become an acceptable thing to do? It was funny and
tragic at the same time. Although it has to be said
that if you are still in the early days of a relationship,
I would strongly advise against this draft proofing
technique.
During a recent family decorating day (even writing
that, I can’t actually believe it happened), I dug out my
25 year old painting jeans, trainers and t-shirt. Frankie
proceeded to take a photo of me and put it on his
social media saying my jeans were “well cool”. When I
told him they were George at Asda and older than him,
he couldn’t believe it. Funny old game isn’t it.
Sadly, it appears I am now of an age where fashion has
come full circle. The important thing to remember is
that clothes only become ‘retro’ when they are worn by
someone half your age or less!
Back to my initial question - of course I know that I
can wear what the hell I want, however, I am quite selfconscious
and usually end up in my standard uniform
However, the fact that I can still fit into jeans that are
almost antique is a small win, but I’ll take it!
Hospice reopens its doors to patients
by Nottinghamshire Hospice
Patients with
terminal illness
can once again
access support at
Nottinghamshire
Hospice’s
Woodborough Road
building as the
charity launches its
new GRACE unit to
provide Therapy and
Wellbeing services.
When the UK went into lockdown last March, the
hospice closed its Day Therapy unit and adapted
its services to be provided virtually or in patients’
homes. Now, as Covid restrictions lift, staff are
welcoming patients to the building for a new,
bespoke programme of activities.
Palliative Care Practice Lead Kate Martin said:
“When people are referred to us we’ll invite them in to
assess their needs, work with them to set some goals
and design a programme for each individual.
“We’ll offer timely, personalised support to meet their
health, social, practical and emotional needs and to
help them stay independent for as long as possible
and make the most of each day.”
Activities include yoga, relaxation, gentle exercise,
complementary therapies and creative activities
alongside one-to-one physio and occupational
therapy.
Elaine Buckley (pictured above) started coming to
Nottinghamshire Hospice before the pandemic and
is keen to return when the building reopens. Elaine is
a keen guitarist whose cancer diagnosis caused her
to lose use of her arm, meaning she could no longer
play.
The hospice physiotherapist and massage therapist
helped her regain strength and movement and a local
music teacher volunteered to teach her ukulele. Mastering
this skill gave her confidence to play guitar again.
Elaine said: “Becoming a hospice patient was not on
my ‘bucket list’! Yet it opened up a whole new world
of life and fresh experiences. When I entered the
building, there was a sense of peace and belonging
that immediately put me at ease.
“I wanted to play my guitar again, so a volunteer came
in to teach me the ukulele to help strengthen my arm.
I am now playing my guitar.
“Being told you are on ‘end of life’ care is like having a
door shut in your face. The Hospice is another door
that presents itself in the darkness. I’m so glad it is
now able to reopen to patients like myself.”
The unit opened for one-to-one assessments in May
and aims to start running group activities during the
summer, subject to COVID restrictions.
The new service follows the GRACE model which
stands for:
Goal setting: Working with patients to set
meaningful goals around what is important to them.
Reablement: Maximising patients’ potential to live
as independently as possible, regain old skills and
develop new ones.
Assessment: Discussing patients’ situation and
exploring ways to help
Complementary Therapy: Helping patients maintain
movement, reduce pain and relax, through therapies
like massage and acupuncture.
Emotional support: Providing a safe space
to explore feelings which may be isolating or
overwhelming.
This model complements the charity’s other
services which provide round-the-clock care at
home for patients at the end of their lives. For
information, visit https://www.nottshospice.org/
service/therapy-wellbeing/ or phone 0115 962
Officers seize drug dealers’ phones to reach out to
help addicts
A suspected county lines drug dealer’s
phone is being used to send out
hundreds of text messages to his
customers to help them break their
addiction.
Analysis of the Bestwood dealer’s hotline
revealed the mobile numbers of more
than 100 contacts were receiving SMS
marketing updates from the drugs line.
The phone
was recovered
after a raid of
a suspected
county lines
drug dealer
who was
arrested for
conspiracy
to supply
class A
drugs
following
a
warrant
executed in Bestwood.
messaging tactic, with the aim to disrupt
drug dealing activity.
“Drugs gangs exploit drug users and
we know there are people who may feel
trapped by their lifestyle or frightened to
get help.
“Our message is clear, if you’re a drug
dealer in Nottinghamshire and you are
looking to recruit, exploit and profit
financially by exploiting the vulnerable
we will use every tactic available to us to
locate, enforce and prosecute you.”
The new tactic is a joint strategy between
the Nottinghamshire Violence Reduction
Unit, Cleanslate, Change Grow Live and
Nottinghamshire Police.
Violence Reduction Unit director Dave
Wakelin hopes more vulnerable people
contact them through the tactic. “If you
are being exploited, we know that talking
to someone can be a tough thing to do,
but there are ways you can stay safe
whilst accessing help and support.”
The search was part of the relentless
pursuit of criminals in a drugs network
that is supplying heroin and crack
cocaine across Nottinghamshire.
County lines officers are now sending
their own text messages from the seized
phone to offer a way out to those trying
to overcome substance abuse, reduce
drug crime and give vulnerable people a
way to seek help from local partners and
support services.
The text lets the recipient know that their
phone number has been in contact with
a county lines phone and signposts drug
users to seek support through tailored
services in the hope that they will turn
their life around.
Detective Inspector Paul Lefford hopes
the force can reach hundreds of young
people and adults through the bulk
Six officers have been added to the
force’s county lines proactive team who
work tirelessly to crack down on serious
and organised crime networks who pull
young or vulnerable people into a criminal
underworld to peddle drugs or carry out
forced labour.
County lines is the term used to describe
criminal gangs who move illegal drugs
from big cities to rural areas and sell
them via a dedicated phone line. It
often involves the use of children and
vulnerable adults who are recruited and
exploited by these gangs.
working from home -
is online socialising
of benefit or not?
I hear everywhere that many workers are suffering
from digital fatigue. Whilst working from home has
been of huge benefit in many ways - not least that
all important work/life balance – the innovation that
was team pub nights and quizzes online has lost its
appeal for most.
During a recent mental health wellbeing event one of
the experts was bold enough to suggest
“rather than book more stuff in why don’t we just let
people finish an hour earlier? Let them have a Friday
afternoon off or come in a bit later on a Monday morning
so that it’s not always trying to get people together more
and more on the screen – but actually getting them away
from the screen”.
A friend who started her new job (high pressured
sales) a few weeks ago was horrified to find out that
on a Friday evening at six o’clock (when all she wanted
was her PJs and a chilled white) she was expected to
socialise for over an hour online with her colleagues.
Although voluntary it clearly wasn’t, and it added
massively to her stress levels.
At the start of the pandemic when we were all hyped
up on fear, the opportunity to see faces and not feel so
isolated was a genuine benefit but as time went on it all
felt a bit much and dare I say it? A bit forced.
I found that my diary was fuller than ever before – and
this was hard for a woman who likes nothing better at
the end of the working day then to switch off, pick up
a book and relax with my dogs. Having said that, one
client who has always kept a professional distance,
requested a Teams Meet at 7pm one evening as her
children would be in bed and it has transformed the
relationship. It almost felt like a social meet because
once we’d discussed the matters in hand we did chat
about all sorts of other stuff as women do.
I think as the working culture continues to evolve
post pandemic we should ensure that people are
comfortable with what they’re expected to participate
in. After work drinks at the pub with your colleagues has
always been personal choice – and so should online
socialising. It’s just not for everyone.
Football in a time of Covid
For many years I have had a long standing love of
football. Despite only watching the odd game on TV
in my formative years (back when you were lucky if
there was one game a month on the telly and the
FA Cup final really was the biggest football event of
the year) I blundered into a sport which still holds me
in its thrall. And in the last few years it has become
even more important to me as my son is absolutely
obsessed with the game.
It started a few years ago when one of our local teams
was looking for a goalkeeper. Apparently at that age
goalkeepers are hard to find as kids just want to belt
the ball into the net. Fortunately my lad enjoyed the
idea of flinging himself around in muddy goalmouths
so he got the gig. Over time he decided he wanted to
have a bit more involvement in games as the team he
played for were pretty good and there’s only so many
wet Sundays that you want to be shivering in goal. So
he became a defender, and then a midfielder. Now
he plays for two teams so our Saturday and Sunday
mornings are completely accounted for, as well as
two evenings a week training. So you’d think there
was no more time for football right? Well, you’d be
quite wrong there...
Rewind back to March last year and his Sunday team
needed a coach. As parents, we wanted the team
to continue and I was asked to take on the team.
In hindsight I think this was mostly due to the fact
that I loved a bit of admin and appeared organised,
but to be honest I was really looking forward to the
challenge.
Running a Sunday League team was a complete
mystery to me, as a parent I normally just paid the
subs and turned up to watch the games. Now I was
responsible for getting the team organised, running
training, liaising with other teams, getting the players
registered, making sure subs were paid, pumping up
the footballs and understanding how to work with the
club that my team were part of.
And then there was Covid.
If you ever wanted to pick a time to start running a
football team, doing it as a global pandemic ripped
through youth sports may not have been the ideal
scenario. As well as working out how to run a team I
now had to understand all of the various paperwork
and rules that accompanied Covid. No doubt the
same as every other youth coach in the country this
meant a huge change in how teams and leagues
would be run. Everything changed, games were
postponed, we had no idea when we were able to
play again, and the kids went months without seeing
each other. I can only speak for my club, but the
support that Arnold Town FC offered was fantastic.
They bent over backwards to help all of us navigate
the new rules and keep us going when we didn’t
know what was happening next.
And then we got the news that we could start training
again. Everyone was delighted to be back, we’d
all had different experiences of lockdown but once
the first football was kicked we got our own bit of
normality back.
We’ve been really lucky that most of our kids have
played together for a few years, and the new ones
that have come in have settled really quickly. And this
goes for the parents too. It’s common to only hear the
negative side of overly competitive parents in Sunday
League but my experience has been one of total
support. They’ve all helped out with training, running
the line, or even refereeing the odd game.
And the team are doing okay on the pitch too. I’m
no tactical mastermind but we win our fair share and
compete even when we lose. More importantly we all
enjoy it together. The kids are all learning and seeing
them develop is amazing and the parents are all on
board with the philosophy that everyone gets to play,
no matter their ability.
So, in hindsight I couldn’t have picked a worse time to
start coaching a football team. But on the other hand
it’s been a phenomenal experience and probably
stopped me from going insane in the last year or so.
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me
eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood
and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!
Tanya About Town
Summer is well and
truly upon us and so
is festival season!
Let’s take a look at
some of the events
that you might be
booking over the
next couple of
months. Wouldn’t it
be nice if we could
book some decent
weather too!
First up, DHP Family, the
organisers behind Splendour
Festival and Dot To Dot Festival,
have launched a new summer
event series, Arboretum Sunset,
at the Arboretum Garden Bar
and Bandstand. Taking place
every Friday, Saturday and
Sunday through until Sun 5 Sept.
There is a diverse entertainment
programme, two container
bars and rotating street-food
vendors all centred around the
park’s iconic bandstand. The
spacious outdoor location means
that, even if social distancing
measures are still in place, all
events will be able to safely go
ahead as scheduled.
For something a little more
serene, join Belvoir Castle
as they transport you back to
the 1920’s on a fine summer’s
evening in July. (8/9 Jul) Join
Heartbreak Productions and the
Nick Carraway quartet for an
evening of jazz, prohibition style.
Nick is not only the band leader
but a top-notch storyteller, and
when he’s in the mood, he can
take you back to the summer of
1922 when he lived next door
to none other than the infamous
Jay Gatsby. So, get your glad
rags on, work up your best
Charleston, and get your cocktail
glass at the ready! The castle
is also hosting a Flower and
Garden show within the stunning
grounds (17/18 Jul).
We’re famous for our sport in
Nottingham, but if you prefer the
easier option of watching, then
the 2021 Vitality Blast season at
Trent Bridge continues until 18
July. An Outlaws line-up packed
with international quality will
defend their Vitality Blast trophy
at this world-class venue.
Wollaton Hall and Deer Park
have a number of events lined
up, starting with open air theatre
performances in the grounds.
You can catch: Macbeth (8
Jul), Dr Dolittle (11 Jul), Mr
Stink (second show 30 Jul),
Much Ado About Nothing (8
Aug), Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland (10 Aug).
We also see the return
of Splendour (24 Jul) as
internationally renowned artists
once again share the stage with
local upcoming talents for this
one-day family-friendly festival.
Careful where you go though,
you might come face to face
with a T-Rex!! (4 Jul – 31 Aug
2022) Titus: T. rex is King is
an extraordinary exhibition,
showcasing the first real
Tyrannosaurus rex to be
displayed in England for over a
century. Win tickets in this very
magazine!
Say goodbye to the sitting room
cinema and hello to the cinema
under the stars! For the first
time ever, The Luna Cinema is
bringing classic cinema under
the stars to Wollaton Hall this
summer (26 to 29 Aug). Throw
in great food, a bar, both with
click and collect service and,
of course, giant screens with
incredible state of the art sound,
and you have yourself a perfect
summer evening out.
This summer we also welcome
the return of Pride with a
colourful parade, live music,
and inspiring speeches and
performances; go along and help
celebrate (31 Jul).
The Theatre Royal reopened
its doors in June. Murder and
mystery returns with the Thriller
season (22 Jun - 17 Jul). As
things continue to return to some
kind of normality, Tell Me On
A Sunday visits, charting the
romantic misadventures of a
young English girl in New York in
the heady days of the 1980s (10
Aug -14 Aug).
Ready to thrill you with fun and
naughty moments, Richard
O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’
roll musical, The Rocky Horror
Show returns as part of a sell-out
worldwide tour (10 - 15 Aug).
The world’s best-loved musical
Grease is back! Grittier and more
glamorous than ever before! (17-
21 Aug) and Heathers calls (31
Aug - 4 Sept).
Dust off your dancing shoes as
The Isley Brothers call into the
Royal Concert Hall (1 Jul).
There’s a very special Evening
With show by Iron Maiden singer,
Bruce Dickinson on his firstever
UK spoken word tour (8
Aug) and a powerful and stirring
reinvention of a family favourite,
Riverdance: The New 25th
Anniversary Show visits
(27 - 28 Aug).
The Nottingham Playhouse
is transformed into a Parisian
cabaret club. With tables
available next to the stage for
cabaret-style seating (limited
availability) for Piaf (2-17 July).
Over at the Motorpoint Arena,
The Drifters visit (11 Jul), there’s
Waterloo - The Best of Abba
(23 Jul), The Dreamboys are still
getting it off (30 Jul) and there’s
a vision of a different kind with A
Vision Of Elvis (31 Jul).
For something a little different,
head to Sherwood Forest for
an evening wander in search
of a luminescent inhabitant of
Sherwood Forest; the glow worm.
The guided walk will take you in
search of female glow worms,
who emit an atmospheric green
glow when patiently awaiting the
arrival of their mate. Sightings
are not guaranteed but being
out in the forest as darkness
descends is an opportunity not to
be missed! This event involves a
walk of approximately 2.5 miles
in length (3 Jul).
The National Justice Museum
welcomes Crime Club - The
Poisoner’s Handbook (5 Aug).
Discover the dark history of
poisons and how they’ve
been used to commit crime
over the years. From Victorian
murderesses to modern detective
techniques.
Local tours recommence
including The Robin Hood Town
Tour, The Ghost Walk, The
Creswell Crags Cave Tours,
and the recently reopened and
refurbished Nottingham Castle
hosts “Hello, My Name is Paul
Smith” the first of its worldclass
Temporary Exhibitions
programme. It will offer visitors
a unique insight into the
magnificent mind of Paul Smith.
Made up of over 1,500 objects
which span the British designer’s
vast career, the exhibition
focuses on a series of key
themes and objects that have
defined the history of Paul Smith.
Looks like we’ve certainly got
some catching up to do!
Unless stated, always assume
there is a charge for the event.
I would still recommend you
A QUIET PLACE
PART II
A Quiet Place Part II does what all great
sequels should. It expands on the world,
characters, themes and legacy of the film
that proceeded it. Part II quite literally
picks up where the last one left off, making
it feel like an extension of a broader story
that is still yet to be complete.
It gives answers to many mysteries of the
first film, whilst simultaneously creating
new questions for further down the line.
I think one of my favorite things about
this film was that it fleshed out the world
that it takes place in, giving it a promising
lore, which will hopefully be explored even
further in future installments.
There’s a world of possibilities for this
series, and I believe it’s in safe hands with
John Krasinski as his direction only grows
stronger in this sequel. He employs similar
techniques to those seen in the first film,
but differentiates it enough to not feel like
a carbon copy.
It feels a lot more narrative driven than
the first but still has the edge of your
GODZILLA VS KONG
As a way to reintroduce people to the big screen
blockbusters, Godzilla Vs Kong is an entertaining
ride. Adam Wingard brings a building-crushing
journey from the neon streets to the centre of
the earth, with elements for hardcore kaiju fans
to enjoy and a charm and scope that makes it a
thrilling ride for general audiences.
Godzilla was previously seen to keep the earth
and humans’ cycle in balance as the king of the
monstrous roaming Titans, whilst the younger
King Kong was seen ruling over his isolated home
of Skull Island. After Godzilla is seen in unusual
attacks on human bases, our protagonists begin
to suspect he is seeking the now-matured Kong
to end a threat to his kingly status. The main story
follows our cast tackling conspiracies on the true
reason for these attacks, as well as a journey to
trace Kong’s origins in some of the film’s most
captivating sequences.
While this film can be considered a typical
blockbuster formula, the chemistry in our main
cast and the characterisation of Kong makes it
more humorous and remarkable.
Godzilla Vs Kong is a case of staying loyal to what’s
on the packaging. Entertaining choreography,
serviceable human characters boosted by
attachable characterisation of Kong, and the fast
but digestible pace of the scenarios makes this
blockbuster pack a punch.
