Community Art Show award-winners named<br />
On <strong>June</strong> 19, the London<br />
Visual Arts Guild (LVAG)<br />
handed out awards to participants<br />
in the Changing<br />
Kay Majka’s exhibit, “New Seasons/New<br />
Beginnings,” is on<br />
display at the London Art Center<br />
through July 11.<br />

Before the Community<br />
Show was open to the public,<br />
LVAG invited London<br />
Mayor Patrick Closser to<br />
look over the 56 entries<br />
and choose the one that<br />
best reflected the show’s<br />
title. Closser chose “Dream<br />
Photo,” a submission by<br />
London resident Mike<br />
Munden, as the winner.<br />
During the Community<br />
Show, which ran May 6-<strong>June</strong> 6, the public<br />
was invited to vote for their favorites. The<br />
following are the People’s Choice award<br />
winners:<br />
• Photography—Jo Ann Salyers for her<br />
photo titled, “New Orleans Side Street.”<br />
Salyers is a London resident who travels<br />
around the United States as a safety inspector<br />
for tugboats.<br />
• Mixed Media—Hilary Frambes for her<br />
portrait of rocker Eddie Van Halen. The<br />
Plain City artist used 8-track tapes,<br />
acrylics, and spray paint to create the collage.<br />
• Hand Crafted Art—<br />
Colleen Van Steene for<br />
her animal-themed sculpture<br />
titled, “One Impacts<br />
the Other.” Van Steene<br />
lives in Cedarville.<br />
• Paintings and Drawings—Johnathon<br />
Mullins<br />
Kimbler for his acrylic<br />
painting titled “Big Cow.”<br />
Mullins is a 2019 graduate<br />
of London High<br />
School.<br />
The President’s Youth<br />
Honoree Award went to<br />
Andrew Carter, a <strong>2021</strong><br />
graduate of London High<br />
School, for his digital<br />
graphite portrait of a<br />
tiger titled “Fierce.”<br />
Each award winner received a certificates<br />
of appreciation, a $25 gift card, and a<br />
one-year LVAG membership.<br />
The awards were presented on <strong>June</strong> 19<br />
during the opening reception for the London<br />
Art Center’s current exhibit, “New Seasons/New<br />
Beginnings” featuring oil paintings<br />
of flowers and landscapes by Kay<br />
Majka. The exhibit is LVAG’s second show<br />
at the center since COVID-19 restrictions<br />
were lifted.<br />
Majka’s show will continue through July<br />
11. Art Center hours are: Tuesday, 4-7 p.m.;<br />
Thursday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Saturday, 10<br />
a.m.-2 p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The<br />
center is located at 121 E. First St., London.<br />
This photo by London photographer Mike Munden won the Mayor’s Choice award in the<br />
London Visual Arts Guild’s Changing Horizons Community Art Show. London Mayor<br />
Patrick Closser was tasked with reviewing the show’s 56 entries and choosing the one<br />
that best reflected the show’s theme. The boy in the photo is Munden’s grandson, Elijah,<br />
shown climbing on playground equipment at an abandoned school near Lilly Chapel.<br />
This fall, Munden will present at show at the London Arts Center, a 50-year retrospective<br />
going back to his start in photography in high school.<br />
