“With the help of Dr. Heather my pregnancy went super amazing.
She kept my hips aligned and gave me the best workout plan for
easier delivery. I gave birth to my little boy in 7hrs 100% drug free.
I can’t thank her enough.” F.W. 11/7/18
On June 17, city council approved a contract
with Choice One Engineering for
$10,000. The firm will assist with reviewing
plans submitted for larger commercial projects.
Currently, Madison County Engineer
Bryan Dhume performs those reviews for
the city. He will continue to do so as Choice
One helps with the workload.
“There are lots of people that would like
to get business going in the city,” said Henry
Comer, council president. “This will be really
helpful to open up this avenue to get
plans looked at so they can get going.”
Another piece of legislation designed to
aid with business development calls for the
creation of a revitalization district that encompasses
a large portion of the city. State
law permits one liquor license for every five
acres in such a district. Supporters see it as
a way to attract and maintain restaurants,
bars, and other eligible businesses.
Council will hold a public hearing and
potentially vote on the proposed revitalization
district at their next meeting on July 1.
In other action at the June 17 meeting,
council members:
• passed the second resolution needed to
place a levy on the Nov. 2 general election
ballot. The city is seeking a five-year renewal
of its 2.1-mill property tax for operating
expenses.
• approved the appropriation of $428,247
for the purchase of a new fire truck and
$900,000 for the purchase of new traffic
lights. The funding comes from a loan the
city recently secured to cover both projects.
• transferred $16,495 into the downtown
revitalization fund.
• appropriated $1,500 in donations for the installation of park
benches around the city.
• approved the appropriation of $40,000 to cover the increased
cost of EMS billing. The company that provides the service increased
the share it keeps from 5 percent to 10 percent in exchange
for providing updates to reporting software, equipment for taking
the reports, and maintenance of that equipment. The state frequently
changes requirements for what is reported on EMS run
sheets which necessitates software upgrades, council member Carla
Blazier explained. The new arrangement will allow the city’s EMS
to get updates and equipment repairs in a more timely fashion, she
said.
Blazier also reported that enforcement of the city’s new restrictions
on parking in city lots goes into effect July 30.
The next London city council meeting is set for July 1 at 6:30
p.m. at city hall, 20 S. Walnut St. The public is welcome to attend.
Rockin’ on the Run beats goal
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Ashley Winebrenner, vice president and
co-founder of Rockin’ on the Run, wasn’t
sure what to expect this time around.
For the second straight year, the London-based
non-profit had to go virtual with
their efforts to raise money for pediatric
brain tumor research and the Fun Floor at
Children’s Hospital. Winebrenner was
pleasantly surprised by the results.
“Our goal was to raise $20,000, and we
raised $26,000. To be $6,000 over what
would be a hard goal to reach on its own, I’d
say is unbelievable but our community is so
supportive. I’m not surprised they stepped
up and blew the goal out of the water,” she
said.
This marked the 12th year for Rockin’ on
the Run which normally involves an in-person
run/walk, huge silent auction, and children’s
games. Due to COVID-19, the 2020
and 2021 events were held virtually.
“Our traditional event feels like the community coming
together. There’s an energy there you can’t recreate
virtually,” Winebrenner said. “But what was cool about
the virtual format is that we could reach out to the entire
world.”
The 2021 auction was held online May 1-15. The virtual
run/walk window was May 9-16. Leading up to and
through these dates, Rockin’ on the Run volunteers
made not only lots of local connections but also garnered
support from across the country and around the world.
Going after any and all sponsor and donor possibilities,
Winebrenner reached out to an activewear company
in Australia she found through Instagram. While
the company said they could not donate this year, the
customer service rep Winebrenner talked to signed up
personally because she knows a child with a brain
tumor.
“It’s amazing how many people have been directly
impacted by knowing someone with a pediatric brain
tumor,” Winebrenner said.
On another cold call to a business in Dayton, she
found out the owner’s nephew had just been diagnosed
with a brain tumor. Separately, she talked to a friend
(From left) Libby Eberhard of Pickerington, her twin sister, Hannah,
and her little sister, Callie, show off their Rockin’ on the Run
medals. Libby was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She is now cancer-free
and undergoing outpatient rehab to regain her strength.
in Grove City who relayed to her that her new neighbor’s
son had just been diagnosed. It turned out to be
the Dayton business owner’s nephew.
Support from strangers and longtime supporters
combined to make this year’s event a success. Winebrenner
said she was humbled when past donors
reached out to her, saying they wanted to give.
“Asking for monetary donations is hard in any year
but very, very hard during a pandemic. Everyone was
affected by the pandemic,” she said. “To have people
reach out to us and say, ‘We don’t have a lot to donate
this year, but we still want to,’ is heartwarming. They
still wanted to give and make a difference.”
The $26,000 will be split evenly between the research
department and the Fun Floor fund at Children’s Hospital
in Columbus. To date, Rockin’ on the Run has donated
more than $233,000 to the hospital.
Next year, organizers hope to be back to an in-person
format.
“Our plan is to be bigger and better, get back to that
community feeling, celebrate these kids, and honor the
ones that aren’t with us anymore,” Winebrenner said.
Visit rockinontherun.org for more information about
the fundraiser and the organization.
Farm in the family for more than 150 years
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Howard “Chic” Foust did not give it too much thought when his
mother announced she was going to pay off the remaining balance
of a farm loan for their property in Plain City.
“I was proud of her for taking that step,” he said, “but that was
pretty much all there was to it.”
A few weeks later, however, when that loan documentation
started arriving on their doorstep, he began to give her decision a
lot of thought.
“I remember this day so well,” Foust recalled with a laugh. “I
was out here mowing when a UPS truck stopped in front of the
house. The driver gets out and starts to unload these big, heavy
boxes that were filled with all of the original paperwork they had
on our farm.”
Knowing his mother would not be able to transport more than
100 years’ worth of paperwork history, Foust took on the tax of carrying
the boxes to the place where “all the family documentation
goes.”
He said that at that moment, he felt a little bit of pity for himself
for the extra work, but more pity for the poor soul who would have
to go through all of the paperwork to find deeds, wills, and what
have you.
That poor soul turned out to be his daughter, Lauren Karn.
Karn said that since she moved into the house and onto the 93-
acre farmstead with her husband, Eli, and their two young children,
Abe and Ike, in 2019, she continued in her father’s tradition of ignoring
the boxes full of paperwork.
“When we moved here, we knew not to throw anything out,” she
joked. “We don’t do spring cleaning in this house; we do a careful
spring relocation.”
Then the pandemic happened, and she needed a new focus.
Though there was plenty to keep her busy—like her job as a nurse
in the cardiothoracic surgery department at Riverside Methodist
Hospital, helping Eli with farming and marketing, and tending to
her boys who are under the age of 4—she wanted something outside
of the norm to keep her mind occupied. So she opened up those heirloom
boxes with a mission in mind, and it wasn’t just to “put things
in order.”
“I knew about the Ohio Historic Family Farms program [established
by the state department of agriculture], and I wanted to see
whether we had the documentation to prove that we qualified for
one of their designations,” she said, referring to the 100-149 year
Century Farm designation, the 150-199 year Sesquicentennial
Farm designation, and the 200-year or more Bicentennial Farm
designation.
She knew the Karn Farm, formerly Pleasant Valley Farms, had
On June 15, Dorothy Pelanda, the Ohio Director of Agriculture, visited the Karn Farm in Plain City to recognize
their operation as one of the state’s “Historic Family Farms.” In addition to receiving a proclamation from Gov.
Mike DeWine, the descendants of L.D. Converse received their certification as a Century Farm and a Sesquicentennial
Farm as they have recorded more than 100 years of same-family ownership. Shown here after the ceremony
Whitney Reed, Michele Converse-Troyer, Laura Vowell, Mindy Foust, Howard “Chic” Foust, Lauren Karn, Dorothy
Pelanda and Eli Karn. Lauren, Eli, Abe and Ike operate and reside at the farmstead located on U.S. Route 42.
not been around long enough to fall under the Bicentennial
Farm designation, but she knew their same-family
ownership would meet the standards of the other two
designations.
“It was just a matter of piecing [all of the paperwork]
together to prove that no ownership of our farm had
changed hands to someone outside of
the family,” she said.
With the help of her relatives—
“they answered any questions and
helped me locate needed information”—and
with the assistance of the
county recorder, she put together the
timeline of their family farm.
Hailing from the Boston-area,
L.D. Converse, Karn’s great-grandfather
six times removed, purchased
the “swampland” in 1843 where he
raised livestock, primarily cattle.
Five years later, he constructed the
red brick house and used exterior
and interior accents found in materials throughout the
property.
Over the decades, the property was handed down to
his descendants and they continued in the tradition of
preserving the use of their farmland to feed the community
and provide work for their families.
With six generations of operational same-family
proof of ownership in her hands, Karn sent copies of the
“(The Historic Family Farm)
program was created to recognize
the hard work farming
families put into providing
needed resources for their
community, their state, and
their country, and for us to be
recognized for our contributions
alongside these other
families is a wonderful thing.”
–Lauren Karn
documents to the Ohio Department of Agriculture for
consideration. In May 2021, Karn and her relatives received
word they had proven their farm is, in fact, an
“Historic Family Farm,” and were awarded certification
as a Century Farm and a Sesquicentennial Farm. They
also received a visit on June 15 from Ohio Director of
Agriculture Dorothy Pelanda, who
presented the family with a proclamation
from Gov. Mike DeWine
praising them for their “commitment
to preserving the agricultural
heritage in the state.”
Karn said that news, along
with the visit from the director, was
worth the painstaking, albeit interesting,
effort of documenting the
history of their farm.
“It is so exciting to be named
as an Historic Family Farm,” said
Karn. “That program was created to
recognize the hard work farming
families put into providing needed resources for their
community, their state, and their country, and for us to
be recognized for our contributions alongside these
other families is a wonderful thing.”
The Karn Farm is located on U.S. Route 42 in Plain
City. They are only the third farming family from Madison
County to be recognized as an Historic Family Farm
by the state department of agriculture.

Livestock 101 event is
new to the county fair
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Youths who are curious about what it’s
like to exhibit an animal at the fair now
have a chance to give it a try with no strings
attached.
Madison County Fair organizers have introduced
Livestock 101, a competition for
youths 17 or younger that mimics a Junior
Fair livestock show. The event will take
place at 1 p.m. July 16 in the Eby Arena on
the fairgrounds.
“This is a very unique concept. It’s never
been done before,” said Paul Gross, Senior
Fair Board president. “We have 51 kids already
signed up for it which is a pretty good
number. We expect to have over 100 by fair
time.”
Participants can choose the species/project
they would like to show—cattle, pigs,
sheep, goats, horses, alpacas, poultry, or
rabbits. Experienced 4-H and FFA youth exhibitors
will serve as their coaches, providing
guidance before and during the show.
“The mentors will be tasked with leading
the novices through the mechanics of showing
an animal. It’s a way for them to share
their knowledge and skills,” Gross said.
Actual livestock judges will judge each
species category. Local and state dignitaries
will be in the ring, as well, as a show of support.
Prizes will be awarded.
“We’re trying to make the kids feel like
this is really cool. There will be lots of pomp
and circumstance to make a big deal of their
first experience,” Gross said.
About the dignitaries, he added, “We
have a big following of people who are supporting
this. It’s gotten a lot of statewide attention
that we didn’t expect but I’m not
really surprised by.”
Most of the youths who have already
signed up are from Madison County, but the
event also has attracted participants from
several other counties.
“We never expected that. We’re thrilled
because it makes for a bigger, better fair,”
Gross said. “We also have 4-H kids who
want to show a different animal. We didn’t
expect that either.”
The overall goal of Livestock 101 is to introduce
youths to the 4-H, FFA, and fair experience
with the hope they will engage in
Sara Oney of London, a member of the
Country Bunch 4-H Club and London FFA,
competes in swine showmanship at last
year’s Madison County Fair. In addition to
presenting the usual Junior Fair livestock
shows, this year’s fair includes Livestock
101, a chance for youths who have never
shown an animal to give it a try with guidance
from experienced 4-H and FFA exhibitors.
the programs on a long-term basis.
“We hope they will enjoy the experience
and spend their summer next year with an
animal of their own” Gross said, adding that
he’d like to see more youths get involved
with 4-H to see what it has to offer.
There is no charge to sign up for Livestock
101. Registration is due by July 1 at
madisoncountyfairoh.com. Each participants
receives an event t-shirt.
Bluebird Retirement Community is the
event sponsor.
This year’s Madison County Fair takes
place July 10-17 at the Madison County
Fairgrounds, 205 Elm St., London. For a
Open house set at Plain City municipal building
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The village of Plain City is hosting a
long-awaited open house and ribbon-cutting
ceremony for its new municipal building.
The public is invited to tour the building,
located at 800 Village Blvd., and enjoy light
refreshments on July 1 between 4:30 and
7:30 p.m. There may even be an ice cream
truck on the premises for those with a sweet
tooth.
“This is something we have been looking
forward to for a long time,” said Nathan Cahall,
village administrator. “We want the
public to come out and see this great facility,
see their tax dollars at work, and also
have a bit of fun with the family.”
He said the event has been more than
two years in the making.
The project’s official groundbreaking
took place in April 2019. The great hope at
that time was the project would be completed
on budget before the end of the year
with the open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony
to follow soon thereafter.
As the months passed, the construction
schedule was pushed back due to change orders
and inclement weather. So, too, was
the schedule for any public ceremony to celebrate
the project’s completion.
“We all know it’s not an official opening
without the big scissors and the ribbon,” Cahall
quipped.
But when the project was complete and
the time came for the government officials
and the police department to move into
their new digs, COVID-19 shut down everything.
“We were able to work in the building,
but it was nothing like we had initially envisioned,”
Cahall said.
Eventually, the public could access the
building to pay bills. They no longer had to
travel to multiple locations around town to
take care of village-related business as the
new building centralizes services. But they
were not able to officially see the $3.1 million
complex they helped to fund with a 0.5
Peyton Kaman, a zoning enforcement technician with the village of Plain City, stands
outside the main entrance to the village’s new municipal building at 800 Village Boulevard.
Though the building has been open for business for more than a year, officials are
hosting a long delayed ribbon-cutting and open house on July 1 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
percent income tax levy.
Come July 1, however, they will finally
be able to see what is inside. Upon entering
the facility, visitors will see a shared lobby
with the administrative section to the right
and the police department to the left.
The administrative section houses the
village council chambers and offices for the
fiscal officer, mayor, parks and recreation,
the income tax department, utilities, and
the zoning department.
There are also several conference rooms
and a kitchenette, to name some of the features.
The police section is three times larger
than police department’s former station on
Friend Street. The space includes a detective’s
office, interview rooms, a property and
evidence room, a training room, and a safe
room for victims of crimes such as domestic
violence.
It also features a Sally Port to move suspects
into and out of the building safely
without posing harm to the community at
large.
Police Chief Dale McKee had a hand in
designing the layout of the police section. He
said one of the things they absolutely
needed was separate bathrooms for police
staff and suspects.
“We had to share a bathroom at our last
station,” he explained. “Sometimes, we
would go in there and there would be urine
or feces all over the floor or the walls.”
He said having that separation, as well
as having the additional space overall, is a
true point of pride for the officers.
“It has been a real morale booster for
them,” he said. “They walk into this new facility,
and they feel proud.”
He added that construction of the new
municipal building is one of the highlights
of his long career.
“When I started here more than 25 years
ago, our department ran out of a trailer
common at a construction site,” he said.
“We used to joke that someone would hitch
us to the back of their truck and pull us
away while we were inside.”
He, along with Cahall, said they are
grateful to the community for helping to
bring the building to fruition.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without
their support,” McKee said.
“feel proud” whenever they walk through
its doors.

Local Ombudsman Program Seeking Volunteers
By: Samantha Cummins
The Central Ohio Long-Term Care Ombudsman program is seeking volunteers
to connect to residents in long-term care settings such as nursing homes,
assisted livings and homes in the community. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman
program advocates for excellence for people receiving long-term care wherever
they live. These volunteers would maintain a regular presence in the facilities,
educate the residents and their families about the Ombudsman program and
their rights, and assist the staff investigating complaints. The goal would have
Ombudsman volunteers in the over 280 buildings that the program serves in
Central Ohio. Those that are interested in volunteering will receive training
which to get the skills needed to be an effective advocate for the residents.
For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Samantha
Cummins, Volunteer Coordinator at 614-345-9198 or 1-800-536-5891.
Back from Olympic Trials
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Eli Stoll has his first Olympic Trials experience
under his belt, and he’s hoping for
a second when the Summer Olympics roll
around again in three years.
The 17-year-old swimmer from Plain
City qualified for this year’s Olympic Trials
in the 100-meter backstroke. He traveled to
Omaha, Neb., for his shot at making the
U.S. Olympic swim team. On June 4, he
swam in the Wave 1 meet. He finished 24th
out of 60 with a time of 56.63, the seventh
fastest time among swimmers age 18 and
younger.
While he didn’t make the team—they only
take two athletes per event—Stoll said he
enjoyed and learned a lot from his first go
in the Olympic spotlight.
“It definitely was nerve-racking but it
was an awesome experience. The pool was
huge; it was like no other place I’ve ever
swam,” he said. “To be on the deck of the
Olympic Trials pool and know you’re swimming
there, it was awesome.”
Stoll appreciated the special treatment Earlier this month, Eli Stoll of Plain City
he and his fellow competitors received. For competed in the 100-meter backstroke at
example, everyone who competed in the trials
received a kick board and a water bottle is now focusing on more immediate pur-
the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.
with their name on it. He also walked away suits.
with something intangible but valuable just “I just want to train hard, get back into
the same.
it,” he said. “I have colleges I’m looking at
“It was more like experience for next now. I’m focusing on getting good times for
time. That’s what I got out of it,” he said. them.”
“Having one down will prepare me better Stoll is a member of the Greater Columbus
Swim Team of Ohio. He also competes
for next time. There was a lot of pressure on
this one, being the first one. I think there on the swim team at Jonathan Alder High
will be less stress the second time since I School where he will be a junior this fall. He
will have already been there.”
is the son of Dawn and Gary Stoll.
With the goal of returning to the The 2021 Summer Olympics are scheduled
for July 23-Aug. 8 in Tokyo, Japan.
Olympic Trials in the back of his mind, Stoll
Quartet performs June 27
Music Men & Jen—a barbershop quartet—
is scheduled to perform at the Cowling Park
gazebo in London on June 27 at 2 p.m. The
concert is free. It is the group’s first performance
in the park since 2014.
The group, formerly Music Men of London
from 2005 to 2019—has undergone some
changes in recent years, kick-starting the
name change. The current members are:
• Jen Vilardi became the new tenor just in
time for Christmas 2019. She also sings with
Capriccio Columbus. She is the group’s first
woman and member with no London ties.
• Steve Lind became the new lead singer
just in time for Christmas 2020. He also
performs with the Singing Buckeyes barbershop
chorus. Like Vilardi, he has no London
ties, hence the group’s name change.
• Craig Chadwell has been a member
since 1998. He began as tenor and is now
baritone/bass. He met Vilardi through a mutual
friend and asked her to audition.
• Paul Oswalt has been a member since
2005, brought in by founder John Ewart.
Oswalt met Lind during a three-year stint
with the Singing Buckeyes who achieved
15th place in a 2019 international competition.
Oswalt began as a baritone and is now
a bass/baritone.
Visit www.musicmenohio.com and
information about the group.
Music Men & Jen
includes: (from
left) Jen Vilardi,
Steve Lind, Paul
Oswalt, and
Craig Chadwell.
The group will
perform at Cowling
Park in London
on June 27.
