School addition progressing
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
An addition at Indian Trails
Elementary in Canal Winchester is well
underway and expected to easily meet its
August deadline for the 2024-25 school
year.
“We are moving right along,” said Canal
Winchester Schools Superintendent Kiya
Hunt during the April 8 Canal Winchester
Board of Education meeting. “Last week,
the first floor was almost finished. It’s looking
great and it’s coming along pretty
quickly. The deadline is still Aug. 1 and
we’re still on track to finish on time.”
Hunt said the project adds 18 classrooms–eight
kindergarten and 10 multiuse
classrooms for other grade-level or
related arts use as needed. The budget for
the addition was $14.3 million.
“This renovation will allow us to have
all-day kindergarten,” said Hunt. “We’ll be
moving the preschool over from Winchester
Trail, which will give us a true PreK
through third grade building and very
much focus on literacy at Indian Trail. The
building looks great and the addition is
coming along. Once the windows were in,
they were able to temperature control the
building.”
Canal Winchester Schools Treasurer
Nick Roberts said it is impressive how
quickly the project is progressing.
“We’ve passed all of the risky areas,”
said Roberts. “I think we’re pretty much
cruising from this point forward.”
Dyer new Winchester Trail principal
The board unanimously approved a twoyear,
$105,977 contract with Dr. Tracy
Dyer to serve as principal at Winchester
Trail. He is filling the position vacated by
Max Lallathin, who will serve as the district’s
director of student services starting
next school year.
The board also approved 10 transition
days for Dyer prior to Aug. 1 at a rate of
$407.60 per day.
“Dr. Dyer comes to us with several years of
experience as an elementary administrator,
as well as military experience,” said Hunt.
“He’s going to be a great addition to our team
and we’re excited to have him on board.”
Hunt said the interview process attracted
18 applicants and narrowed down to a
field of five to six candidates. Three were
recommended for further consideration,
YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY
Before your dentist asks you to,
“Open wide, please,” you will probably
be asked a few questions
about your general health. Why
would your dentist be concerned
about other parts of your body?
Because your answers can have a
direct bearing on your treatment.
For example, certain kinds of
heart conditions make people susceptible
to an infection of the
heart valves when the gums are
manipulated, such as in a thorough
dental cleaning or when a
tooth is filled or extracted. Therefore,
these people usually take an
antibiotic before dental treatment.
Since 1972
Dr. Kelly
People who are allergic to penicillin
can have a reaction when it is
prescribed for tooth infections. Diabetics
whose disease is poorly
controlled can become ill after the
stress of dental treatment.
Your dentist will probably also
ask if you are on any medications,
so that he or she can avoid prescribing
any medications that
could cause harmful interactions.
promote better dental health.
REPORT
Continued from page 1
“We began this club with a budget of
$100 for props and materials, two iPhone
cameras, an advisor who believed we could
do it, and a burning passion to make our
school a better place,” said Taylor. “The
Ranger Report is strictly a club, and
although we are only two years into making
videos, talks of creating a class with
credits and more expensive equipment are
already in the works. It aims to create fun,
diverse, informative videos catered to our
students and staff.”
In 2022, Taylor said she and Najeeb
realized students and staff were unaware
of what was going on, most often by ignoring
daily announcements whether it was
spirit days, extracurricular and academic
opportunities, or even days off.
“The majority of our school population,
to put it simply, just did not know,” said
Taylor. “Since eighth grade I noticed how
confusing and chaotic the information in
our school was passed around, and when I
met Mariam my sophomore year, she felt
the same exact way. We both also felt that
our school had no idea of the current
events that were happening at that time–
any information on the Russia-Ukraine
war–and so we put our brains together
and took about three months to compile
The Ranger Report and hold auditions.”
Teachers and students alike watch the
show in their classrooms–they are broadcast
on a YouTube channel after a final
check by advisor Byron Allgood. Along
with the news segments, there are also
interactive aspects, such as online voting
and student/staff interviews.
Allgood, who is the school district’s
inclusivity coordinator, said the Ranger
Report is truly a student-led endeavor and
the only thing he does is look over the video
content before it goes live on-air. Only a
couple of times has he recommended
changes.
“Liv and Mariam started talking about
the lack of communication and I remembered
the old Channel One when I was in
school,” recalled Allgood. “I thought it
would be a great idea. Just walking
around, you could see people weren’t paying
attention to the announcements. Now,
students and teachers are paying more
attention.”
Not unlike the work and research that
goes into a professional newscast, a team of
student researchers are tasked with ferreting
out stories and citing sources. On
Monday, videos are filmed with anchors
using scripts created the previous week.
“We have two school news anchors, two
world news anchors, two sports news
anchors, and four fun segment anchors,”
said Taylor. “The world and school news
Lockbourne Council
local government
anchors switch every single week to ensure
that we are including as many passionate
people in this club as possible. After we
film all of these clips, we send them to our
editor so that he can begin to edit the
video.”
Taylor and fellow student Josh Kennedy
serve as co-producers and even pinch hit as
anchors.
“From the moment our club was started,
both Mariam and I valued the fact that we
had created a platform to let our school
population know of news—both locally and
internationally,” said Taylor. “We were
never shy to incorporate political happenings,
humanitarian crises, and current
events that even students our age should
be aware of.”
Involved in 16 extracurricular activities
at her school, leading isn’t something new
to Taylor, whose post-secondary plans
include a political science degree from The
Ohio State University followed by a law
degree.
She said her school experience helped
her learn the depths of being a leader and
what that responsibility fully entails.
However, being a leader for the Ranger
Report Club is entirely different, according
to Taylor.
“This club is 100 percent student-run,”
said Taylor. “We do everything ourselves.
When one is asked to think of a leader,
they usually imagine a mean, hard boss.
While I can be hard on our staff with due
dates and assignments, I genuinely put all
of my trust into every single student in The
Ranger Report. This was the most challenging
aspect of being a producer, for
sure.”
Taylor said it is easier said than done to
delegate power and to trust those to whom
you are delegating. She said she was afraid
to trust other people with something she
cares so deeply about, but once Taylor realized
they cared just as much as she does,
trusting everyone in the club became a
much easier task.
Because of his involvement in The
Ranger Report, Kennedy plans to major in
communications at Ohio University with
the hopes of becoming a director or producer
in a broadcast newsroom.
And although her experience with The
Ranger Report is not leading Taylor to consider
a career in communications or journalism,
being a part of the club has taught
her how to manage a heavy workload, delegate
power to those she trusts, and be a
part of something bigger than herself.
Obetz Council enacts
moratorium on marijuana
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
Obetz City Council has hit pause
regarding marijuana permits.
Council approved an immediate moratorium
on the issuance and processing of permits
allowing retail dispensaries, cultivators,
or processors of adult use marijuana
within the city of Obetz.
“This is to give it appropriate time to see
what the state ultimately decides with
respect to the new laws,” said Obetz City
Administrator Rod Davisson.
When asked if a vendor for such an operation
approached the city about opening
one in Obetz, Davisson said, “Many vendors
have called to inquire over the years,
but nothing came of it.”
Other Obetz news
•At its April 8 meeting, council heard
the second reading of legislation to issue
$5.2 million in bonds for the purpose of
acquiring land.
Davisson said the 118 acres of land is
located along Rathmell Road and Parsons
Avenue with the seller to retain roughly 11
acres.
When asked what is to be developed
there and who is developing it, Davisson
said, “Obetz. It’s not yet planned, but likely
a mixed use development that is part of
Buckstone.”
•Council also hard the second reading of
an ordinance for the issuance of $1.7 million
in notes for the purpose of acquiring
and constructing public utility improvements,
including any necessary road, sidewalk,
landscaping, and other improvements.
Davisson said this is for “undergrounding
utilities in downtown Obetz.”
•Another piece of legislation that had
its second reading before council was an
ordinance to issue $3.2 million in notes
regarding property along Groveport Road
at Orchard Lane.
“This is not for land purchase,” said
Davisson. “It’s for the construction (by
Obetz) of a commercial building of roughly
10,000 square feet. Construction will begin
late summer/early fall. It is still in the
design phase.”
•Obetz City Council meets the second
and fourth Mondays of each month at 6
p.m. in the Council Chambers at 4175
Alum Creek Drive, Obetz. Call (614) 491-
Be a part of renaming
Obetz’s Lancaster Park
The City of Obetz is embarking on an
exciting project to revitalize Lancaster
Park, a cornerstone project for 2024, which
also includes a new name for the park.
City of Obetz officials want Obetz residents
to be a part of renaming the park.
with a new name that captures the spirit of
Obetz and resonates with the community.
Residents are invited to participate in a
two-stage survey at obetz.oh.us to select
the park’s new name. Take the survey by
May 15, to submit your ideas for the new
park name.
The city is aiming for a name that
reflects Obetz’s history and character, so
avoid anything silly or offensive.
City staff will compile the suggestions
and present the top five contenders in a
second survey launching on May 20 and
closing on May 31.
The combined results of the resident
vote and a single vote from the mayor and
each Obetz City Council member will
determine the park’s official new name.
Mayor Angela Kirk will announce the final
selection after the vote at the city council
meeting on June 10.
The park revitalization project extends
beyond the name change. Improvements
being made include: anew pickleball complex,
new cornhole boards, and permanent
game tables for ongoing community enjoyment.
Winchester.
The graduation ceremony will be held
May 21 at 7 p.m.
Four the past four years commencement
was held at Fortress Obetz.
According to Hamilton Local Schools
CW Tree Giveaway
City of Canal Winchester residents will have the opportunity to
pick up a free tree at the city’s 23rd annual tree giveaway at
Stradley Park, 30 S. High St. in historic downtown Canal
Winchester, on May 4 from 9-11 a.m., rain or shine.
Approximately 120 trees will be given away on a first-come, firstserved
basis. Limit one tree per household.
The annual giveaway and associated programs are part of an
initiative by the city’s Street Tree Advisory Board and the
Department of Public Service Division of Stormwater to increase
canopy coverage, prevent soil erosion, and promote clean air
throughout the Canal Winchester community. According to Canal
Winchester’s Urban Forester Dick Miller, “Distributing new trees
to private property owners in Canal Winchester benefits us all and
is essential in growing the city’s green canopy.”
Miller added, “The majority of tree canopy coverage is on private
property and riverine corridors in Canal Winchester.
Anything your street tree advisory board and stormwater department
can do to further the goal of planting more of the right tree
in the right place is a plus for the city. Trees are the only part of
the city’s infrastructure that will grow on their own and increase
in value and function over time.”
The giveaway is open to city of Canal Winchester residents living
within the city’s corporation limits only.
Proof of residency is required, such as a city water bill or driver’s
license. During the giveaway, members of the Street Tree
Advisory Board can answer questions about residential selections.
Flushing also verifies proper operation of hydrants and valves,
and maintains firefighting capabilities.
Spring fire hydrant flushing will take place between 8 a.m. and
3:30 p.m. through May 3.
If you see hydrant flushing crews working, please drive carefully
and treat them like any other road construction crew. If you see
a hydrant being flushed on your street, avoid running tap water,
your washing machine, or your dishwasher until flushing in the
area is complete.
During or immediately after hydrant flushing, tap water may
come out with sediment that causes discoloration. Although a
slight discoloration may last for a few hours, it does not affect the
taste or quality of the water.
This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and
poses no health threat.
Should you experience discoloration or other difficulties resulting
from hydrant flushing, the water department suggests the following:
•If water pressure or volume seems low, check your faucet
screens for trapped particles.
•If you encounter discolored water, shut your water off and
wait several minutes.
After waiting, check the clarity by running cold water for a few
minutes to allow the new water to flow into your pipes. If the
water is still discolored, wait a few more minutes and check again.
In some cases, it may be a few hours before the water is completely
clear.
•Avoid washing laundry during the scheduled flushing hours.
After hydrants in your area have been flushed, wait until water
runs clear from your tap, then begin with a load of dark laundry
before doing lights or whites.
Governor
DeWine’s
State of the State
Address
It is customary for Ohio’s Governor to speak to the
General Assembly annually to update legislators, as
well as the state’s citizens, with the progress the
state is making and his initiatives for the coming
year. On April 10, Governor DeWine gave his 2024
State of the State address.
Ohio government enjoys few events where formality,
pomp, and circumstance are center stage. This
may be the centerpiece. Held in the historic chambers
of the House of Representatives, every one of
the most important state officials are present, including
the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, both
first ladies, all the remaining statewide elected officials,
members of the Ohio Supreme Court, every
State Senator and Representative, and all the governor’s
cabinet officers. The Speaker of the House
begins the day by introducing a minister for a prayer
and then leads the Pledge of Allegiance. After asking
the Speaker Pro Tem to announce a quorum of
House members, he introduces the President of the
Senate, who presides over the event. Once the Senate
President secures the announcement of the
Senate President Pro Tem that a quorum of senators
is present, he then introduces the governor. The
governor enters the Chamber escorted by the remaining
officers of both legislative houses.
In his 63-minute address, Governor DeWine quickly
got to the theme of his talk: Ohio’s children. He outlined
the initiatives that he feels will make the most
impact on the health, education, and welfare of our
next generation of Ohio’s leaders. He first spoke of
Ohio’s initiative to provide every child under five
with an age-appropriate book each month for his
parents to read to him. Currently, 60% of such children
are part of this private-sector-funded effort.
He then praised Ohio’s educational reading initiative,
known as the Science of Reading (which emphasizes
phonics instruction), and how it already
has resulted in increased numbers of young Ohio
students reading at grade level. He asked university
education programs to align their teacher training
curriculum accordingly. Other children’s initiatives
included making career planning a part of graduation
requirements, increased access to vision checking
and corrective glasses for all young children,
and additional emphasis on children’s mental
health issues. Here he called for requirements for
parental notification for social media use, policies
aimed at the limitation of cell phone use at school,
and financial incentives for college students to pursue
behavioral health professions. He concluded his
remarks with an anecdote about the Pennsylvania’s
governor’s frustration with Ohio beating out its
eastern neighbor in landing large jobs and economic
development projects and emphasizing the
urgency to address these children-related issues
now.
Resident wants city to
remember Frances Steube
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Before Canal Winchester moved its city
offices and community center into the former
McDorman auto museum building on
East Waterloo Street, the Trine Street
community center was named in honor of
Frances Steube, a former council member,
community activist, and author.
The name did not follow the center
when it opened in its new location.
Resident Kathleen Vasko wants the city
to change that.
“Frances Steube was an important citizen
and served on council for several
terms,” said Vasko during the April 15
Canal Winchester City Council meeting.
“She co-wrote two Canal Winchester books.
She was an active member of the historical
society and was one of those people who
gave away much more than she took.”
Vasko said when the community center
was demolished to make way for additional
parking for the new municipal building,
the Steube named did not follow the community
center move.
“It should have been transferred and it
bothers me a lot,” said Vasko. “The name
should have been the Frances Steube
Community Center. I don’t think the name
should have been dropped and I think you
should have looked into re-instating it.”
The issue will be discussed at the next
meeting after follow-up information is
studied.
Other Canal Winchester news
•Construction Services Director Bill
Sims reported finishing touches are underway
at the three-seasons shelter house at
McGill Park.
He expects construction to be completed
by May 1.
Pickleball courts site work is underway,
as is the 2024 street program and the High
Street revitalization project was awarded
to Decker Construction.
According to Sims, a fair amount of
phasing is involved on High Street that
affects businesses and sidewalks along the
project corridor.
He said his goal is to meet with everyone
impacted by the endeavor to discuss
specific concerns.
“We’re in the midst of that process now,”
said Sims.
•Sims also discussed the parade of Intel
superloads moving through the city on a
regular basis and said the process has gone
smoothly and without major issues.
“You’ll probably see a little deviation
coming up in the next couple of loads with
one on Saturday and one on Sunday coming
through town,” said Sims. “They’re trying
to move two up during the week and
then get both through and up to their destinations
on the weekend. It’s amazing this
weekend how quickly that moves compared
to the first trip. I’ve not heard or seen any
negative impact other than brief issues for
10 to 15 minutes.”
When asked by Councilwoman Jill
Amos what recourse the city could take if
property is damaged by the move of loads
of up to more than 900,000 pounds along
Canal Winchester roadways, Sims said the
city is holding a cash bond from the moving
company.
The company is insured and the city is
holding a million dollar insurance policy as
well. Sims reported Gender Road is a
heavy roadway that was built to accommodate
a lot of truck traffic.
“Even though the load’s gross weight is
tremendous, the actual axle weight is pretty
much at the legal limit,” said Sims.
“There’s very little impact to anything else
other than the pavement. We didn’t have
to relocate traffic signs or signals.”
•Council members Patrick Shea and
Richard Moore swapped committee positions.
Moore is now the council representative
to the Joint Recreation District and
Shea will serve as a Human Services council
representative.
“I’m not able to meet the commitment
that is needed to give the JRD the attention
and love that it deserves with my present
workload,” said Shea. “I feel I would be
doing a disservice to the community to sit
in that chair and not be able to attend
meetings due to my professional career.”
•A resolution extending the agreement
with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s office
was extended under emergency language
to prevent a lapse in a jailing contract.
•The first reading of an ordinance
updating swimming pool rates for the JRD
was also passed under emergency language
due to the upcoming season.
However, the discussion on the update
raised concerns about the $80,000 deficit
from the 2023 pool season and a potential
review for the 2025 season offering differential
rates for residents.
•Council also canceled its Committee of
the Whole meeting on April 29 due to a
lack of topics.
•Canal Winchester City Council meetings
are held on the first and third Monday
of every month.
Meetings begin at 7 p.m. The meetings
are open to the public.
Council meets in work session at 6 p.m.
prior to each city council meeting to discuss
legislative items and other issues of the
city prior to being included on a city council
agenda.
The first work session of the month
focuses on finance/economic development
items and the second monthly work session
focuses on service/safety items.
While each work session includes specific
areas of focus, other items may be
brought before council as needed.

“Wicked Little Letters” is a
throwback to British comedy
Have you ever written a mean letter to
someone? I definitely have.
Over the course of my lifetime, I have
written hundreds — possibly thousands — of
letters to those who have disappointed me.
They have been addressed to a wide variety
of individuals and they include my
mother, my father, my sister, myself, my
friends, my boyfriends, my ex-boyfriends,
my teachers, my bosses, politicians, the
executives behind the decision to discontinue
my favorite facial moisturizer, and
other random people who have met me on
a bad day, or vice versa.
It is not lost on me that the sheer volume
of letters produced may come across
as slightly psychotic, but please know that
none of them were actually sent. In fact,
the vast majority of the letters were composed
within my head and this exercise primarily
serves as a way for me to blow off
steam in order to spare the feelings of others.
Not that some on the aforementioned
list did not deserve a strong tongue lashing.
The reason why I am sharing a favored
coping mechanism with you all is because I
am reviewing a movie for this column that
revolves around mean letters. But in the
case of the aptly titled “Wicked Little
Letters,” the slighted party mailed out
those missives, causing a huge firestorm in
the process. (Note: This is why we sometimes
keep things to ourselves.)
The black comedy is based on a true story
of a scandal that rocked the town of
Littlehampton, England in the early 1920s. It
is a tale that is so bizarre that it seems completely
made up — but it isn’t. What director
Thea Sharrock and writer Jonny Sweet do
well is adapt the events in a way that maintains
all of its raucous and filthy humor while
also highlighting the internal and external
biases that make the individuals of this time
period behave the way they do.
At the center of this twisted and true
tale are two women, Edith Swan (Olivia
Colman) and Rose Gooding (Jessie
Buckley). Edith has been a resident of this
sleepy seaside town her entire life, never
marrying and still living under the thumb
of her domineering father Edward
(Timothy Spall) and her kind but passive
mother Victoria (Gemma Jones). Raised in
a devoutly religious household, Edith has a
buttoned-up personality and only lives to
serve the Lord and her jerk of a dad.
One day, a boisterous woman named
Rose moves in next door to the Swan family.
A migrant from Ireland, she is “what people
feared women would become after the war
ended.” Despite the fact that she drinks like
a fish, swears like a sailor, and seldom
cleans the shared outhouse, Rose is a wonderful
mother to her young daughter Nancy
(Alisha Weir) and a great friend to Edith —
possibly her first true friend in the world.
But something happens to cause a deep
rift in the friendship and shortly thereafter
The Reel Deal
obscene letters start
showing up on
Edith’s doorstep.
Naturally, the Swan
family believes that
Rose is the author of
the filthy and anonymous
missives and
they implore the
police to arrest her for
the sake of “all that is
decent in the world.”
Dedra
Cordle
When presented
with the working theory that she is behind
the vulgar letters — they read as if William
Shakespeare and George Carlin teamed up
to create a book of insults — Rose cannot
help but wonder if this is a joke being
played on her. “Why would I send letters
when I’ll just say it to your face?” she asks.
But because the police cannot stand
Rose and the “suffragette” attitude they
feel is poisoning their post-war nation,
they arrest her and charge her with the
crime of sending obscene letters. The only
law enforcement official who is sure of her
innocence is “woman police officer” Gladys
Moss (Anjana Vasan). Knowing that Rose
is quite poor and cannot afford to send so
many letters, she tries to talk some sense
into her male coworkers and superiors.
However, they view her as “only a woman”
and dismiss her theories. Although
stymied by the antiquated views on her
gender, Gladys sets out to prove Rose’s
innocence and find the true perpetrator
behind the wicked little letters.
In the lead up to its release date last
week, “Wicked Little Letters” has tried to
bill itself as a mystery but it really is more
like a throwback British comedy. The real
culprit behind the 1920s troll campaign is
obvious from the get-go but that does not
detract from the overall delight of this
movie. Even though the direction and the
writer is quite deft, the movie truly succeeds
thanks to the skills of its stellar
ensemble cast, all of whom take great
delight in the verbal sparring, the
sleuthing, and the tidal wave of obscenities
that are unleashed in this film.
Because of the vulgarities that run rampant
throughout its 95 minute run time,
“Wicked Little Letters” will likely not be
for those who find that kind of humor
unappealing. But if you can get your ears
to hear past all that lewd noise, you will be
witnessing a really delightful movie about
making and losing friends, and about
women straining under the pressure of a
society that is designed to keep them quietly
at home, with nary a bad word floating
around in their heads.
Yocum named cheerleading coach
Hamilton Local Schools announced that Grace Yocum (pictured
here, far left) is the new head cheerleading coach. She
assumed responsibilities on April 12.
An alumni of Hamilton Township High School, Yocum
served as a varsity cheer captain during her time as a student
and spent the last three years coaching middle school and serving
as a high school varsity assistant. During her time coaching,
she has been nominated for Ohio middle school/junior high
coach of the year by Nfinity Athletics. She is set to graduate
from Ohio Dominican University in the spring of 2025 with a
double major in PK-5 education and K-12 intervention. She has
aspirations to attain a master’s degree in educational leadership,
and is committed to the growth and development of her
student-athletes both on and off the field.
One of Yocum’s objectives as head cheerleading coach is to
integrate more life skills and core values into the program. She
emphasizes the importance of goal setting, both short and long
term, not only in cheerleading but also in the classroom and in
students' lives overall.
“After careful consideration, we believe Coach Yocum will be
a perfect fit as the new leader of our cheerleading program,”
said Hamilton Township Schools Athletic Director Matt
Thompson. “She has an excellent rapport with the staff and
students of our district, and we are looking forward to seeing
her excel in this role.”
Hamilton introduces
teaching profession course
Hamilton Local Schools introduced a
“grow your own” opportunity starting next
school year for seniors at Hamilton
Township High School: the Teaching
Professions course.
This opportunity represents the culmination
of partnerships created between
Hamilton Local, Eastland-Fairfield Career
Technical School, Columbus State
Community College, Capital University,
and Otterbein University.
Interested seniors will complete this
course, preparing them for the paraprofessional
certification exam in the spring of
their senior year. Upon passing the exam,
students can be employed full time by a
school district as paraprofessionals. They
will subsequently qualify to pursue bachelor’s
coursework online, starting with prerequisite
coursework through Columbus
State for two years. Afterward, they can
transfer to Capital University for the final
two years of coursework completion, also
online. This partnership allows students to
work full time in an educational setting
while earning their teaching degree online.
Eastland-Fairfield will supply the teacher
Addressing Ohio's Housing Crisis:
A Call to Action from State Senator
Michele Reynolds
As a State Senator representing the people of Ohio, I am
deeply concerned about the housing crisis that is
impacting our state. From urban centers to rural
communities,Ohioans are struggling to find affordable
and stable housing options. This crisis affects not only
individuals and families, but also the overall economic
health of our state. It is time for us to come together and
take action to address this pressing issue.
One of the primary challenges facing Ohio is the lack of
affordable housing options for our residents. Many
hardworking Ohioans are spending a disproportionate
amount of their income on housing, leaving little room
for other essential expenses. This financial strain not
only affects individual households but also undermines
our state's ability to thrive economically.
To tackle the issue of affordable housing availability, we
must first recognize the importance of collaboration
among stakeholders. Public-private partnerships are
the key to solving this crisis. By working together, we
can leverage our collective resources and expertise to
make meaningful progress.
The public sector plays a crucial role in addressing the
affordable housing shortage by implementing policies
that support the development of affordable housing
units. This may include zoning changes to allow for
increased density and the construction of affordable
housing, incentives for developers to invest in affordable
housing projects, and partnerships with nonprofit
organizations to create housing opportunities for
low-income residents.
The private sector also has a crucial role to play in addressing
the affordable housing shortage, particularly
by investing in workforce housing solutions. Investing
in workforce housing solutions can take various forms,
including providing financial support for affordable
housing initiatives aimed specifically at workers in key
industries. By recognizing the importance of stable
housing for their employees, businesses can not only
attract and retain talent but also contribute to the overall
well-being of the communities in which they
operate.
As Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Housing, I
am committed to advocating for policies that promote
access to safe, affordable housing for all Ohio residents.
This includes increasing funding for affordable housing
programs, advocating for regulatory reforms that
support housing development, and championing
initiatives that address the root causes of the housing
crisis.
But I cannot do this alone. I urge all Ohioans to join me
in this important effort. Contact your local elected
officials, engage with community organizations, and
support businesses that prioritize workforce housing.
The housing crisis in Ohio is not insurmountable, but it
will require concerted action and commitment from all
of us. Let us rise to the challenge and work together to
build a brighter future for our state. Together, we can
make a difference and ensure that every Ohioan has a
place to call home.
The amazing flying squirrels of Ohio
By Ayden Van Fossen
Naturalist at Highbanks Metro Park
When you think of squirrels in Ohio,
likely the first images to pop into your head
are that of gray squirrels running through
your yard, fox squirrels jumping through
an open understory, or even maybe the
loud chatter of red squirrels within a
conifer stand.
These three species — the so-called tree
squirrels — make up only three of the seven
species of squirrel in Ohio. Our squirrels
are spread out across six genera and
include lesser-known species of squirrels,
like the southern flying squirrel and thirteen-lined
ground squirrels. Additionally,
we are home to two species that one may
not realize are squirrels - eastern chipmunks
and groundhogs.
Ohio squirrels are unique, remarkable
animals that are often easy to overlook due
to their relative abundance, but in actuality,
they demonstrate phenomenal examples
of adaptation to thrive in their environment.
Groundhogs are the only true
hibernators in the state, thirteen-lined
ground squirrels are very streamlined –
perfect for dashing through open fields and
into tunnels – and flying squirrels have
the ability to take to the air and glide from
tree to tree.
Flying squirrels are arguably the most
fascinating and uniquely adapted of all
their other squirrelly cousins, with their
characteristic skin membranes serving as a
parachute of sorts. Known as the patagium,
this flap of skin connects at the wrist
and ankle allowing them to efficiently
move through the air. Consequently, this
makes them a little more awkward on the
ground. Of course, the common name of
these animals is a bit of a misnomer seeing
as they are not capable of true self-powered
flight. Bats are the only mammals which
are truly able to fly. Flying squirrels are
gliders, relying on gravity, wind and their
patagia to keep them moving in the air.
Southern flying squirrels are probably
the most populous species of squirrel in
Ohio. This often takes people by surprise,
as I have had plenty of encounters with visitors
responding with “Wow I had no clue
we had flying squirrels!” or “Why have I
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has officially
declared 2024 as the Year of Ohio
State Parks. This declaration marks the
75th anniversary of Ohio State Parks and
underscores the state’s commitment to preserving
its natural wonders and expanding
outdoor adventures.
“Ohio’s state parks, where admission is
always free, give visitors an opportunity to
gain a deeper appreciation of Ohio’s natural
heritage,” said DeWine. “The Year of
Ohio State Parks is the perfect time to visit
one or more of Ohio’s 75 state parks, experience
our state’s natural beauty, and
never seen one?” The answer to the latter is
simple, our flying squirrels are almost
strictly nocturnal. They are built for this
lifestyle in the dark, with their big, dark,
buggy eyes aiding them in navigating the
forest after nightfall.
These squirrels are certainly maneuverable
in the air. With the aid of their patagium
and flattened feather-like tail, which
acts as a rudder, these squirrels can make
quick turns while airborne. The featherlike
tail also aids in landing. When the
squirrel is nearing a landing pad, it will
raise that flattened tail, which in turn
forces the back half of the squirrel down to
land feet first.
An additional way that the southern flying
squirrel stands out from our other
squirrel species in the state is its diet.
Flying squirrels are often called the most
carnivorous of our squirrels, and for good
reason. They will readily take insects,
birds, nestlings, eggs, carrion, and even
occasionally other small rodents. However,
they will still consume food that is commonly
associated with squirrels, such as
nuts, berries, fruits, and seeds, and may
also take them from your bird feeder. It is
not uncommon to find these squirrels feasting
on the seeds in your feeder well into the
night. Flying squirrels appear to especially
have an affinity for hickory nuts, and will
also cache nuts in the fall. These caches are
done by scatter hoarding, which is when
caches are spread out across the landscape
rather than being concentrated in one
place.
Spotting flying squirrels can be tricky
because of their nocturnal nature. The
aforementioned bird feeder technique can
be effective, but they do also vocalize.
Vocalizations are high-pitched buzzes and
chirps, and almost sound like a slightly
lower-pitched golden-crowned kinglet call
(if kinglets called at night) with a mix of
red squirrel chatter. Indirect signs of squirrels
can be found in various forms, such as
caches, but also scat, which are small,
brown, oval shaped pellets. Flying squirrels
also chew nuts in a unique way, making
them easy to identify as squirrel signs.
They are much neater than their squirrely
cousins when chewing, and this results in
end of the nut that the squirrel would
2024 is the Year of Ohio State Parks
actively participate in the preservation of
these treasured lands.”
Ohio’s state parks and waterways are
renowned for their breathtaking landscapes
and diverse recreational opportunities.
The Ohio Department of Natural
Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and
Watercraft plays a pivotal role in safeguarding
these resources, ensuring that
Ohioans can continue to enjoy the many
benefits of spending quality time in nature.
“We are excited to celebrate what we
believe to be the best state park system in the
country,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said.
Park staff serve as stewards and caretakers
of the parks, preserving the state’s natural
and cultural history. The Year of Ohio
State Parks is an historic celebration,
emphasizing the outstanding opportunities
statewide to honor and appreciate some of
the world’s most iconic outdoor destinations.
DeWine’s proclamation highlights the
pivotal role state parks have played to
expand access to the outdoors for people of
all backgrounds. Through a variety of safe
and equitable outdoor activities and events,
state parks foster stronger social ties, celebrate
Ohio’s rich culture, and showcase the
have used to carry the nut, perhaps to a
safer feeding location. It can be hard to use
your paws to carry things while in the air.
state’s remarkable ecosystem.
Ohio started designating properties as
official state parks in 1949 when lawmakers
created the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources. ODNR is also celebrating
a department-wide 75th anniversary
throughout 2024 by highlighting the
achievements of all 12 divisions, including
the Division of Parks and Watercraft.
For more information and to stay updated
on the 75th anniversary celebration
events and activities as well as all the programming
the state parks have to offer,
