Hopping around
an Easter egg hunt
Messenger photos by Dedra Cordle
Gantz Park was the most hopping place on March 9 as Keller
Williams Consultants Realty hosted its first annual Easter Egg
Hunter. Despite the occasional rain shower and strong gusts of
wind, more than three dozen children throughout the region
came to the park located in the city of Grove City to search for
hidden treasures and have their picture taken with the famous
rabbit. Shown here having a great time at the photo station with
the Easter Bunny (a.k.a. Jeff Messmer) is Sophie Stoltz, 5.
While the photo station came equipped with a number of
bunny ears and related holiday paraphernalia for the photo
shoot, the Grove City resident came to the event with her own
gear to celebrate the day.
(Bottom right) Children get ready to pounce on the eggs that
were spread throughout the upper portion of the park. Melissa
Little, the events coordinator and growth director at Keller
Williams Consultants Realty, said it took the egg hunt volunteers
nearly an hour to place the treasures around the green
space and it only took five minutes for the children to sweep
them up.
(Below) Joshua Howard, 3, reaches for a few of the eggs that
were scattered around. More photos can be found at columbusmessenger.com.
Council votes for
events on Broadway
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
Grove City Council approved legislation
that would put popular events back on
Broadway despite concerns from the city’s
administration.
For many years, events like Arts in the
Alley and the Grove City Wine and Arts
Festival were held along Broadway. More
recently, the city’s administration has
BROADWAY
Continued from page 1
moved those events off Broadway to address safety and
traffic issues. As the city grows, so does its traffic and
city leaders did not want to divert the traffic from
State Route 62 onto residential streets.
Councilman Randy Holt introduced the legislation
that would direct the city administrator to cause the
closing of Broadway for Arts in the Alley and the Wine
and Arts Festival. He said the organizations that host
those events (Grove City Chamber of Commerce for
Arts in the Alley and Heart of Grove City for Wine and
Arts) support the plan.
This ordinance does not mandate that the events
are held on Broadway. It allows for the events to be at
that location but it is up to the organizations to apply
for a permit and state its intent to hold the event on
Broadway.
“We have all heard a clear message from residents,”
said Holt at a recent council meeting. “The value of
having the events on Broadway exceeds the residential
inconvenience of detours.”
Council members believe that if Circleville can close
its streets for the annual pumpkin show and Bucyrus
can close its main route for the bratwurst festival, then
Grove City can do the same.
According to William Vedra, deputy city administrator,
comparing those municipalities with Grove City
is not “apples to apples.” He said though Circleville
does close U.S. Route 23, there are other routes to
direct truck and other traffic around the area. In addition,
he said Bucyrus also has a simple detour to get
divers through town when that city closes its main
route.
Vedra said the average daily traffic count at
Broadway and Columbus Street is 17,000 vehicles. He
said the residential streets around the downtown area
are not designed to handle that amount of traffic,
which includes truck traffic.
“Based on our experience and professional opinion,
the risks of closing Broadway outweigh the benefits to
the entire community,” said Vedra. “Our number one
goal is safety.”
Further complicating matters is the Columbus
Street sewer expansion project that will be in progress
from July through December. Drivers will see a westbound
only Columbus Street detour with this construction
project.
Holt said this project could been viewed as a positive,
as drivers would already be accustomed to a
detour in the area.
“If the administration would spend an equivalent
amount of time in the past several weeks trying to
improve our detours, rather than finding last minute
construction items and blockers, we could easily have
the same success as Circleville,” said Holt.
Pamela Drone, who is a small business owner and a
Grove City resident, believes the safety issues are with
the events being jammed into a small area off
Broadway.
“It is not safe as it is now,” she said.
Drone said it is not safe for people in wheelchairs or
those with limited mobility.
“Everything is crowded and packed together.”
She also said the small businesses on Broadway
benefit from events being held on Broadway.
Councilman Ted Berry said having the events off
Broadway has impacted local business owners.
“Moving an event behind Broadway does not give
businesses any help,” said Berry.
The legislation to allow the chamber and the Heart
of Grove City to move their events back on Broadway
was approved with a majority vote. The only vote
against the ordinance was council president Christine
Houk, who said council should not be giving directives
to the experts in the field.
“If council makes a decision to give a directive, we
assume the risk of that decision,” said Houk.
She said everyone would love to have events on
Broadway, but with the growth in the city, traffic is
only going to become heavier.
“It’s not about the inconvenience of the flow of traffic.
It is a safety issue - the pros say it is,” said Houk.
Vedra said the city’s administration would like to
make the Town Center Park the premier event space.
He said there are plans to add permanent restrooms
and other amenities and the space allows event planners
more time to set up and tear down.
According to Vedra, there is potential for more than
six acres of event space in and around the Town Center
Park.
“That is much larger than Broadway,” he said.
Vedra also announced plans to move the annual
Homecoming Celebration from Broadway this year.
The legislation council approved gives the green light
for the Grove City Chamber of Commerce and Heart of
Grove City to host events on Broadway. The homecoming
is a city-sponsored event.

South-Western City School’s superintendent
says he is ready to retire after
leading the district for nearly two decades.
On March 11, Dr. Bill Wise told the
board of education he would step down
from his position prior to the expiration of
his current contract, which runs through
2026. He will remain as superintendent
until Aug. 1, 2024.
Wise said it has been both “a blessing”
and “an honor” to have led the district.
“It has truly been a blessing to be here,”
he said. “I always like to say that South-
Western is one of the biggest small places
you’ll ever find because it is a family in and
of itself. We have had so many talented
individuals come through here that have
laid the foundation for what this school
community is and it has just been a real
honor to have been able to serve here and
hopefully, in some small way, have contributed
to making it a better place.”
Wise began his career in education in
1990 as a mathematics teacher at Tiffin
Columbian High School in Tiffin, Ohio.
Within seven years, he was selected to
serve as principal of the school. He
remained in that role until coming to the
SWCSD in 2002.
Initially hired as the assistant superintendent
of curriculum, he was promoted to
deputy superintendent in 2006. The following
year, he was selected by the board to
serve as the district superintendent.
During his tenure, he oversaw a massive
and multi-phased construction project
that built 13 new elementary schools, four
new middle schools, one new high school
and various other site development projects.
He also oversaw the implementation
of full day kindergarten and the creation of
the Accelerated Learning Center, an inhouse
college preparatory program for high
school students to pursue college credit
and earn associate degrees in two or three
year pathways.
The district experienced its highest
graduation rate in district history under
his tenure and there has been no new operating
levy on the ballot since 2009. The district
does not expect there to be a new operating
levy on the ballot for the foreseeable
future due to a strong financial forecast.
Wise said that while he is proud of all of
the strides the district has made since he
has been here, he cannot take all of the
credit for it.
“I am very proud and very pleased by
what has been accomplished at the district
since 2007, but I don’t take any credit in
that,” he said. “I have benefited greatly
from the talented people in this district
and it has just been my honor to be a part
of that process.”
www.columbusmessenger.com
Superintendent of South-Western
City Schools District to retire
Dr. Bill Wise
Although his retirement is scheduled for
Aug. 1 2024, Wise will not officially leave
the district until Aug. 31, 2025. At the
meeting, the board announced that Wise
would serve as the special assistant to the
new superintendent to help with the transition
process.
“I wanted to take on this role because I
felt it was important that they be able to
understand the logistics of the district and
be able to move through those spaces as
they take the reins of this district,” he said.
“I want to make sure that I am able to support
them, and I want to make sure that
connections are made with various community
groups, elected officials, and other
partners that we have throughout the
greater Columbus area.”
The board said they were thankful for
his decision to stay and assist the new
superintendent.
“We have been so blessed with Bill being
here and knowing the ins and outs (of the
district) and that is what is so nice about
him staying around so we can have that
smooth transition,” said board president
Chris Boso. “That is going to be a great
thing for that new prospect since he or she
might not have that experience.”
When asked what the board is looking
for in a candidate for superintendent, Boso
said they are looking for someone who will
represent the community and someone
who will not be overwhelmed by the size of
the district, which is the third largest in
central Ohio and the sixth largest in the
state.
Over the next several days, the district
will reach out to a variety of organizations
that assist school boards with the recruitment
of superintendents. The board said
they would like their pool of candidates to
come from inside and outside of the state.

Career Academy receives state grant
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The South-Western Career Academy
will receive financial assistance from the
state as they prepare to expand its programs
for the next school year.
Earlier this month, Ohio Governor Mike
DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted
announced the recipients of the Career
Technical Education Equipment Grant
Program which will help schools purchase
up-to-date equipment so they can better
prepare students to be career-ready upon
graduation.
“New technologies are transforming the
economy, and to prepare students for those
careers, we need to invest in the machinery,
technologies, and training that educators
need to prepare students for the growing
number of careers in the Ohio economy,”
said Husted. “Through these investments,
thousands more students will graduate
high school career-ready — prepared
for careers without college debt and providing
Ohio employers with the talent they
need to compete globally.”
According to Evan Debo, the executive
director of communications with the South-
Western City School District, the career
academy will receive more than $300,000
to purchase equipment for the new HVAC
program and the expansion of the Pre-
Nursing program.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have
been named one of the 56 recipients of the
2024 Career Technical Education
Equipment Grant program by the governor’s
office,” said Debo. “The $313,604 in
funding comes at an incredibly important
time for the SWCA as it is on the precipice
of a significant program expansion for students
with two new programs on the horizon
for this upcoming fall.”
Among the approved programming purchase
for the HVAC program are:
•Table-Top Heat Pump Trainer
•Electronic Expansion Valve Table-Top
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
Trainer
•HVAC Electrical Control Trainer
•Residential Wiring Trainer TUE-150
•Multi-Head Mini Split Heat Pump
Training Unit
•Deluxe Residential Heat Pump with
Duct Work & TV TU-406C
•Deluxe Residential AC Training Unit
•Basic Refrigeration Trainer TU-100
•Domestic Refrigeration Build-Up
Trainer TU-101
•Lab Volt AC/DC Training Systems
•Build Pro Welding Table
The state funding will also be used to
purchase various student tool kits and supplies
for the HVAC program.
Christine Galvin, the director of career
technical education, said student interest
for the program has “been very positive.”
“At the close of our February SWCA
application window, student interest in the
HVAC program has been very positive
across the four high schools with over 50
applications submitted by incoming junior
students,” she said.
The career academy will begin offering
the HVAC program at the start of the
2024-2025 school year.
Among the programming purchases
that have been approved for the Pre-
Nursing program are:
•Laerdal SimMan 3G Trauma Patient
Simulator and Accessories
•Pocket Nurse Hydraulic Multi-
Treatment Stretcher
The state funding will also be used to
purchase various student tool kits and supplies
such as bed pans, blood pressure
cuffs, gowns and stethoscopes.
The SWCA has offered the Pre-Nursing
program since its inception, but recently
made the decision to expand due to student
demand.
“From a programming standpoint, our
traditional Pre-Nursing course has been
capped at 48 students (24 juniors and 24
seniors) resulting in prospective applicants
regrettably being waitlisted to get into the
program,” said Galvin. “Beyond this student
interest to drive the need, we know
According to the district, 107 students
applied for the 2024-2025 Pre-Nursing program.
The 2024-2025 courses of Pre-
Women’s History - Honoring
The Past and Casting Forward
Dear Neighbor,
As we celebrate Women's History Month, it's imperative
that we not only reflect on the incredible
accomplishments of women throughout history
but also take concrete steps to ensure that
progress continues. We stand on the shoulders of
trailblazers who fought tirelessly for women’s
rights. Our duty as a community is to honor their
legacy by actively supporting and uplifting
women today.
Reflecting on the past year, I am proud to have
sponsored legislation like SB 93 and co-sponsored
HB 35, which directly address pressing issues
facing women in our society. These
initiatives represent crucial steps toward improving
maternal health and seeking justice for survivors
of sexual abuse. However, our work is far
from over.
To truly advance the cause of women's rights, we
must remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts.
It's not enough to simply acknowledge the
achievements of women; we must actively work
to dismantle the barriers that still exist. This
means advocating for policies that promote gender
equality, providing support and resources for
women in all aspects of their lives, and fostering
a culture that values and respects the contributions
of women.
As leaders, we have a responsibility to lead by example
and create opportunities for women to
thrive. By championing the advancement of
women, we not only honor the legacy of those
who came before us and ensure a brighter future
for generations to come.
But supporting women isn't just the responsibility
of those in positions of power – it's something
everyone can do. Whether through simple acts of
encouragement, advocating for equal opportunities,
or challenging stereotypes and biases, we
all have a role in creating a more equitable
society.
So let us use Women's History Month as a catalyst
for change – a reminder of our progress and the
work that still lies ahead. Together, we can build
a legacy of support and empowerment for
women that will be remembered for generations.
My
Legislative
Aide
The Legislature currently is on recess and will return
just after Easter. I have asked my Legislative Aide,
Teddy Smith, to introduce himself in this issue’s column
and let us know what his responsibilities are.
I am Teddy Smaith, the Legislative Aide for Representative
Dave Dobos. Although I now work for the
State of Ohio, I was born in downtown Chicago, Illinois
in 2001. I spent the first 18 years of my life in
the city and suburbs of Chicago, before deciding to
attend The Ohio State University, where I earned a
bachelor’s degree in political science with a focus
on American Politics. While at OSU, I fell in love with
the city of Columbus and knew I wanted to spend
the beginning of my post-grad career here. So, I applied
to be a Legislative Aide in the Ohio House of
Representatives. After interviewing with a few Representatives,
I was offered the position by Representative
Dobos and accepted without a second
thought.
I’ve now been working for Rep. Dobos and the
House since October 2023, and the position has
provided me with great experience in my field. My
responsibilities focus on helping the Representative
serve his constituents as best he can. Many are clerical
duties, such as following up on constituent requests,
setting up and preparing him for meetings,
communicating event invitations, and keeping track
of his schedule. I also assist him with the legislative
process. For example, when working on a new
piece of legislation, I am typically the main point of
contact for any organizations or constituents who
may be advising the Representative on the bill. I
also keep track of any changes the bill may need before
it can be sent to the Clerk’s office and placed in
a committee. In addition to legislative duties, Representative
Dobos’ position as Vice Chair of the
House Transportation Committee means I hold the
title of Vice Clerk. As Vice Clerk, I am responsible for
taking the minutes at every Transportation Committee
meeting, keeping a record of every bill and testimony
that passes through the committee, and
helping the Clerk (the legislative aide of the committee
chair) with any committee-related issues that
may arise. Being the Legislative Aide for Rep. Dobos
has been a rewarding challenge for me, and I could
not have asked for a more fulfilling opportunity so
quickly after graduating. If you ever have any questions,
insights, or concerns as a constituent of Rep.
Dobos, please don’t hesitate to e-mail the Representative
or me at rep10@ohiohouse.gov.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the Ohio
House of Representatives, which consists of parts of
West, Southwest, and South Columbus, Grove City, Urbancrest,
and portions of Franklin and Jackson Townships.
He reports regularly on his activities in this
position and his campaign has paid for this communication
Grove City residents will now have the tools to live a healthier lifestyle
with the debut of Clean Eatz, which is slated to open at 3621 Southwest
Blvd. in Grove City this spring. The healthy lifestyle restaurant specializes
in preparing properly-portioned meals and will give the community the
option to order meal plans, catering, Grab ‘N’ Go meals, and a full dine-in
menu at the wellness inspired café.
The new franchise location is owned by local entrepreneur Casey
Schroeder. Having grown up in Lima, Ohio, Schroeder decided to attend
Coastal Carolina University to play baseball. From there he went on to play
in the Chicago White Sox organization. During his time as a college and professional
athlete, Schroeder recognized the difficulty of maintaining a
healthy diet while on the road. As a student at Coastal Carolina, he often frequented
Clean Eatz, where he knew he could get something to eat that didn’t
Zonta Club aims to empower local women
By Christine Bryant
Staff Writer
A new organization in Grove City is working to build a better
world for local women.
The Zonta Club of Grove City is part of a global organization of
experienced professionals who provide service and advocacy to
empower women and girls.
“Our local Zonta Club of Grove City is focused on empowering
local women with service projects and educational opportunities,”
said Joyce Combs, who lives in Grove City and serves on the Club
Creators Committee where she works to create new clubs in Ohio,
West Virginia, and Kentucky.
“I moved to Grove City two years ago and was so impressed
with the community that I thought this would be a great location
to start a new club,” she said.
Combs wants women in the Grove City area to know that there
are resources available to them if they’re looking for ways to
empower other women or need help themselves.
“We are a global organization of experienced professionals providing
service and advocacy to empower women and girls,” Combs
said.
The international Zonta organization approved the Grove City
club to begin forming and providing service projects to the community
last year. The local club should have its official charter status
in the next few weeks, Combs said.
In just under a year, volunteers with the organization have
served the Mid-Ohio Food Collective, donated Valentine gift bags
for children staying with their mothers at Amethyst, and collaborated
with the community to collect feminine hygiene items,
gloves and socks for women and girls at the Van Buren Homeless
Shelter.
The organization is also planning a “Spring Cleaning
Collection” to support various organizations that help vulnerable
women and girls.
“During the month of April we are asking friends and neighbors
for various items that can be donated to organizations in central
Ohio such as Sanctuary Night, a safe haven for sexually-exploited
women; Maryhaven, an addiction recovery center for women; and
Lighthouse, a domestic violence shelter,” Combs said.
Items of need include gently-used clothing for women returning
to the workforce, winter coats, scarves, gloves, bath towels, dish
towels, and gently-used coffee cups and drinking glasses.
Donations can be dropped off at Transcend Coffee and
Roastery, 4050 Broadway, or the Grove City Visitors Center, 3995
Broadway, Suite 100.
Donators can also message the club at
zontagrovecity@gmail.com.
“In the local community, we focus on three main points - providing
service, advocacy initiatives and scholarship/educational
Volunteers Karen and Melody put together Valentine Day’s gift
bags for children staying with their mothers at Amethyst.
opportunities for women and girls,” Combs said. “We also support
legislation to protect vulnerable women and girls, such as from
domestic violence or human trafficking.”
In recent years, Zonta clubs have worked with legislators to
encourage the passage of bills on human trafficking and domestic
violence. The Grove City club invited Laura Lanese, a former
State Representative and Grove City council woman, to speak
about Ohio’s Ending Child Marriage, an initiative to raise the
minimum age for marriage in Ohio.
“We encourage our members to be informed advocates and
work with legislators to change policies that benefit women and
girls,” Combs said.
Those who want to volunteer or donate to the Zonta Club of
Grove City can email at the address listed above or follow the
organization on Facebook to learn more about becoming a charter
member.
“Are you someone who wants to build a better world for women
in Grove City? Zonta Club Grove City is an excellent opportunity
to do just that,” Combs said. “Members build long-lasting friendships,
are well-informed on issues and belong to an empowered
network.”
Central Crossing athletes compete at state tournament
Messenger photos by Pat Donahue
Addison Rudolph returned to OHSAA Wrestling State Tournament, held March 8-10 at
the Schottenstein Center. It was her fourth year to qualify for the season finale that features
the states’ 16 best in 14 weight classes. This year, the Central Crossing senior
moved up a weight class and took the number one spot at the Division I District
Tournament at 120# pounds. Rudolph started off the tournament with two wins before
falling to eventual champ, Kayla Moroschan by a score of 3-0 in her third match. She
came up on the short end of another close match in the semi-final before bouncing
back into the win column, and taking a 5-2 win over senior Josie Nickoloff of Olentangy
Orange (shown here). The final win would place Rudolph on the podium in fifth place,
making her a four-time state placer. She finished the season with a record of 43-13.
During her career, she captured over 120 wins, as well as earning Academic All Ohio
honors. Rudolph recently accepted a scholarship to wrestle at Cambellsville
University in Kentucky.
It was the first trip for Central Crossing sophomore Jacob Ramirez to the OHSAA State
Wrestling Tournament, held March 8-10 at the Schott. Ramirez qualified for the states’
biggest wrestling stage by finishing in the top four at the district tournament in the
Division I, 150-pound class. He was unable to capture a win at the tourney, bringing his
season record to 36-16.
A state-funded grant which provides education and
training to first responders is being sought by officials in
Jackson Township.
The board of trustees unanimously approved a resolution
at its meeting on March 12 which authorizes the township
administrator to apply for a hazardous materials
training and planning grant.
Established by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio
(PUCO), the types of funding available for this grant
include:
•Courses involving hazardous materials training
on various levels, including first response
awareness, operations and technician, highway
response specialist, incident command and tank car
specialist.
•Intermodal hazardous materials training.
•Incident response exercises.
•Rail hazardous materials training, including
rain/highway incident response training.
•Hazardous materials planning and survey
studies.
According to administrator Shane Farnsworth,
the township will seek funding to primarily cover
coursework and training exercises that annually
take place at Cleveland State University.
“It is really valuable training for our men and
women,” he said. “The courses and the training help
them to prepare for hazardous spills that take place
on the interstate and it will also help them prepare
for incidents should they happen at the SWACO (Solid
Waste Authority of Central Ohio) landfill.”
He noted that the township fire department was the
first to respond to the scene involving a tractor-trailer that
had overturned on Interstate-270 last year. The tractortrailer
was believed to have been carrying hazardous
materials at the time of the incident.
“Our fire personnel were the first to respond and they
knew what to do because they had that training,” he said.
Farnsworth said PUCO’s Hazardous Materials
Training and Planning Grant is “highly competitive” as it
is open to fire departments statewide. However, he does
believe the township fire department has a “good chance”
to receive some funding to further the education and training
of its fire personnel.
“We are a growing community that is surrounded by
several interstates where vehicles are constantly carrying
hazardous materials,” he said. “While we do have our own
HAZMAT team on London-Groveport Road, having the latest
knowledge and training on how to respond to largescale
operations is immensely beneficial.”
The township does not expect to hear whether they
were chosen to receive funding through PUCO’s
Hazardous Materials Training and Planning Grant program
until later this summer.
Residential composting in Grove City
The city of Grove offers drop-off, food-waste collection in partnership
with GoZERO Services, a non-profit courier service, for
residential composting of kitchen food scraps. Since partnering
with GoZERO in April 2021, Grove City residents have recycled
over 34,000 pounds of food waste.
Residents can register for the composting program at grovecityohio.gov.
Once registration is complete, it’s easy to get started. Residents
collect food scraps in a container of their choice and then at a time
convenient for them, drop scraps into the GoZERO lime-green containers
located behind Brookpark Middle School, 2803 Southwest
Blvd., in the rear corner of the west parking lot. Plastic baggies,
grocery bags or trash bags should not be used. GoZERO empties
and cleans the containers
each week.
Prescription drug disposal
The National Association of Drug
a program to significantly reduce easy
access to outdated or no longer needed prescriptions.
These drugs are the target of theft by
people who have access to the medicine
12- to 17-year-olds have made prescription
drugs their number one substance of
abuse, and much of the supply is coming
from the medicine cabinets of their parents,
adults recognize the need to remove these
substances from the home.
Melissa Reed has a newfound passion
for axe throwing and is paving the way for
women in the sport as she heads to the
World Axe Throwing League
Championship this April.
Within two years of throwing her first
axe, Reed has developed her skills enough
to be drafted to global competition. In
March of 2022, the Hilltop resident traveled
to Tennessee with her husband, Ray,
to spend time with family and decided to
casually go throwing for the night. They
had so much fun that upon returning
home, they began searching for a local
place to enjoy together. Reed and Ray
joined another couple at Throw Nation in
Dublin, the only World Axe Throwing
League certified venue in Columbus. Reed
took the first throw and nailed the bullseye.
A nearby coach noticed and encouraged
her to join a league. She and Ray
returned the following week and haven’t
looked back since.
Reed has lived on the Hilltop for the
past 28 years. She and her husband have
spent the last few decades raising their
children and spending their nights shuffling
kids to and from practices. This was
now something for them.
As Reed continued showing up to participate
in various leagues and competitions,
one thing became clear - she was out numbered.
At times, Reed was the only woman
in the game, and she initially found that
intimidating. Over time though, she
noticed just how welcoming the throwing
community was, and became a voice that
inspired other women to push past any presuppositions
they had and enjoy the sport
with her competitively.
The number of women participating at
the venue continues to grow, and Reed has
found herself leading an all women league
weekly on Thursday nights.
“It is so special to me to be on a team full
of women,” she said.
Reed particularly enjoys watching the
process of different women coming in,
learning they’re good at something, and
excelling.
Outside of her success in growing the
community’s diversity, Reed has scored
exceptionally. She has been participating
in competitions since 2022, and due to her
high performance, was drafted to compete
in the World Axe Throwing League
Championship April 18-21. The competition
will take place in Tulsa, Okla. where
she will travel with seven other Throw
Nation members to complete.
“It’s still so hard for me to wrap my
mind around the fact that I’m one of the
best in the world and accomplished that in
less than two years,” said Reed.
In preparation, Reed is finding herself
on site six nights a week. She said she has
immense support from her Throw Nation
community, and that greatly contributes to
the narrative of community being the crux
of this sport to her.
“It’s family to me,” she said.
PAGE 16 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - March 24, 2024
Once upon a time, the stories in books
and movies were filled with meek young
women, usually a princess or royal of some
sort, trapped in a bad situation. Sad, alone,
and defenseless, she would sit atop her
tower and wait for a strapping man to come
and save her, whisking her off to a happily
ever after.
Nowadays, the stories in books and
movies are filled with subversions to the
old fairy tale cliché of the damsel in distress.
Rather than conveying a message
that one should sit around and wait to be
saved, they encourage the bright young
lasses to pick up a sword (literal or
metaphorical) and fight to control their
own destiny. Although these stories have
become something of a cliché in and of
themselves, it is never a bad thing to be
reminded that one can use their wit and
skill to get out of situations they do not
want to be in. The latest offering of this
worthy message comes from Netflix and a
young star who knows something about
perseverance.
In the cheekily titled “Damsel,” Millie
Bobby Brown plays Elodie, the sweet and
kind elder daughter of Lord Bayford (Ray
Winstone). She presides over a community
in which there is not enough to go around;
the harsh landscape makes the ground less
fertile and her subjects often struggle to
find enough food or heat. To try to make up
for the lack, she scavenges the forest for
food and lumber to make sure that her family
and her people do not starve or freeze to
death.
Living in such a barren place can make
one desperate, which is why her father is so
willing to turn her over to a suitor from a
faraway land. “They are offering us food
and riches beyond our dreams,” Lord
Bayford tells his daughter. Despite her
reluctance to marry — she wants nothing
more than to sail the high seas in search of
a grand adventure — she is willing to do so
because of her loyalty to her family and to
her people.
Elodie is immediately struck by her new
home; the air is warm and clean, the land
is fertile and bountiful, and the homes and
palaces are wrapped in luxury. The only
thing more impressive is the fact that her
suitor, Prince Henry (Nick Robinson) is
close to her age, handsome, and has a full
head of lush hair.
The only thing that truly gives Elodie
and her stepmother pause is the fierce
Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) who is regal
and remote, rebuffing any attempt at
friendship from either pair. Lady Bayford
tells Elodie she does not have to go through
with the marriage, but the young woman
knows what she must do: wed, start a family,
and perhaps work toward a happily
ever after with her handsome but bland
husband-to-be.
After the wedding, Elodie is taken to the
mountainside where a strange ceremony is
being conducted. The guests are all adored
with masks a la “Eyes Wide Shut” and her
mother-in-law stands at the altar with a
dagger that is to be used to mix the blood of
the newlyweds. Although Elodie is unsure
and a little freaked out at this point, she
goes with the flow, trusting her husband
and new family to do right by her. But then
Prince Henry sweeps her off her feet and
casually throws her into a chasm where a
fire-breathing dragon with a big grudge
against the royal family of Aurea awaits.
Up until this point, this movie was looking
more like “Damsel: Cinderella” than
anything else. But when she is thrown into
the lair it turns into “Damsel: Die Hard” as
Elodie tries to escape from the exceptionally
well-designed dragon, played with great
menace by the smoky voiced Shohreh
Aghdashloo. At times, it often has the feel
of a video game where Elodie faces one
obstacle after another, making some
progress but not enough. Brown is on her
own for a long stretch of time, and she is
quite effective at alternating fear and
determination, using wit and skill to try to
survive the dragon lurking around every
dark corner.
The one major complaint I had about
this dark fantasy written by Dan Mazeau
and directed by
Juan Carlos
Fresnadillo is that it
does not feel as if
there are any stakes
at play. Although
the heroine is being
stalked and harmed
by a dragon, we know that no real harm
will come to her so it lacks that urgency
and investment needed to sell a fantasy.
Oftentimes while watching “Damsel,” I
found myself wishing that it could have
had a traditional theatrical release,
because the settings are filled with enticing
details that bolster some of the weaknesses
of the screenplay and story. But even on
Cougar qualifies for state
Messenger photo by Pat Donahue
Lucas Crosier of Westland was one of the best in the state to qualify for the 2024
State Wrestling Tournament, held March 8-10 at the Schottenstein Center. The 132-
pound sophomore earned a trip to the event by finishing in the top four in his
weight class at the district tournament. Crosier is shown here on the right in a second
round match up against Colerain senior Bryce Sears. Crosier was unable to
claim a win at his first trip to the state tournament and finished the season with a
record of 44-13.
