YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY
Before your dentist asks you to,
“Open wide, please,” you will probably
be asked a few questions
about your general health. Why
would your dentist be concerned
about other parts of your body?
Because your answers can have a
direct bearing on your treatment.
For example, certain kinds of
heart conditions make people susceptible
to an infection of the
heart valves when the gums are
manipulated, such as in a thorough
dental cleaning or when a
tooth is filled or extracted. Therefore,
these people usually take an
antibiotic before dental treatment.
Since 1972
Dr. Kelly
People who are allergic to penicillin
can have a reaction when it is
prescribed for tooth infections. Diabetics
whose disease is poorly
controlled can become ill after the
stress of dental treatment.
Your dentist will probably also
ask if you are on any medications,
so that he or she can avoid prescribing
any medications that
could cause harmful interactions.
Prepared as a public service to
promote better dental health.
