Religious Practices Message
Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow
We are back!
The RPC and Reopening Team are thrilled to announce that services will begin
once again in the Sanctuary on Friday, July 9th at 7:00 p.m. It's been a long time
coming, and we are all anxious to get back together in person. We have followed
the lead of State and National guidance, plus excellent input from the Union for
Reform Judaism, in determining our Reopening strategy. When we go back
initially, it will be with masks and distancing. We hope to move to relax those
requirements soon, especially as Maryland will drop those requirements as of July
1st.
Our goals have been safety, number one; treating everyone fairly, number two; and
reaching some sense of normalcy, number three. To those ends, we have contacted
all medical professionals (that we know of) in the congregation to assist with any
congregants with concerns about becoming vaccinated. 100% of those contacted
agreed to sign the letter you recently received, which encourages everyone to be
vaccinated. Included in the letter are excerpts from a CCAR Responsa to the
question of vaccination. We would also encourage you to read this
recent article from the URJ weekly, where Rabbi Danny Burkeman of Temple Shir
Tikva in Wayland, MA, discusses vaccination from a Jewish Perspective.
In a way, having the Responsa from the CCAR provides just the kind of
information/opinion that makes Judaism so powerful and so relevant to us today.
First, a question is raised by one synagogue. A group of Rabbis then look to the
Torah and other historical writings through the ages for guidance on how to
answer. Next, they will look at various aspects of the issue and its potential
impacts. Then, they look at current information that they believe to be trustworthy
to help make a decision. Then there is a serious, respectful debate about the issue
and how the Rabbis should address it. When you hear that Judaism is a "living
religion," this is an example. It does not mean that everyone agrees (although, in
this instance, the case for vaccination is pretty overwhelming). There are often
minority opinions written along with the majority opinion, not unlike the Supreme
Court. And then, the opinion(s) is shared with the entire community for the benefit
of all. If you are interested in looking at other CCAR responsa, click here, or search
for "CCAR Responsa."
Very much looking forward to seeing everyone back in shul!
Temple Reopening Letter
Reopening Committee
We are very pleased to announce our return to the Sanctuary for Shabbat
services on July 9, and our Kehillah MAGNET Religious School and Early
Learning Center (ELC) activities in September. To ensure everyone’s safety,
masks will be required when we return in July. As we gain more information
about higher rates of vaccination, lower rates of transmission, and lower risk in
Harford and Cecil counties, we will relax masking and distancing requirements
as appropriate. We look forward to seeing you back at shul!
It’s hard to imagine a time when we didn’t know COVID-19 existed. Now when
people say “virus,” we know what they mean. COVID-19 has impacted our lives,
our work, our activities, and our freedoms.
Through the good work of many of our congregants, we have, primarily through
technology, maintained Shabbat and holiday services; cared for those who have
been ill; mourned for those who have died or lost a loved one; and continued
learning within the Religious School, the ELC, and adult education classes. The
safety of our staff, members, and guests has been (and will continue to be)
paramount.
The responsibility is ours, as a community, to help stop this virus. A recent
Central Conference of American Rabbis Responsa concluded that 1) “It is a
mitzvah to preserve one’s own health and well-being (sh’mirat haguf). The
COVID-19 vaccines approved by the CDC (Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J) qualify
as r’fuah b’dukah, proven treatment, and it is therefore a mitzvah to get
vaccinated unless one has a medical reason that makes it unsafe.”, and 2) “It is a
mitzvah to adhere to standards of safety that avert obvious dangers (sakanat
nefashot) to others or to oneself.”
It takes everyone.
We all need to step up to beat COVID-19, and the very best tool that we have is
a COVID-19 vaccine. We ask you to join us in protecting your community by
getting vaccinated.
Getting vaccinated adds an important layer of protection for you, your
coworkers, your family, and your loved ones. Here are some things to know
about COVID-19 vaccination:
6 | P a g e
All COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States are extremely effective
at preventing the disease, and especially at preventing hospitalizations and death. The
likelihood of death once vaccinated is roughly 2 per million people, compared to thousands
per million for unvaccinated persons, with rates increasing geometrically for older
individuals.
The most common side effects are pain in the arm where you got the shot,
feeling tired, headache, body aches, chills, and fever.
Stopping a pandemic requires using all the tools we have available
wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands frequently, and getting vaccinated.
We want the pandemic to be over. We want you and your loved ones to feel
safe as we begin to re-open our building and come together for prayer; for
education; and for social activities. And we also understand that making the
decision to get the vaccine can be difficult or even scary. Stories of negative
reactions to some of the vaccines have been in the news, and it is sometimes
difficult to know what to do. If you have any questions or concerns about the
COVID-19 vaccine, we encourage you to visit the Johns Hopkins University’s
COVID-19 Resource Hub (https://covidvaxhelp.org/) or
the CDC’s FAQs web page (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-
ncov/vaccines/faq.html), talk to your primary care physician, or reach out to any of
the medically trained individuals who are members of our Temple. Those
individuals are listed below as co-signers of this letter, and are all strong
supporters of vaccination.
One key piece of information to keep in mind is that infection rates for
vaccinated persons have plummeted to almost zero; while infection rates
for unvaccinated persons continue at same pace as in January, at the height
of the pandemic. The methods for unvaccinated persons to avoid COVID-19
are the same as they have always been: wearing masks; maintaining social
distance; frequent hand-washing; and avoiding inside activities, especially with
large crowds or other unvaccinated persons.
At this time, we will not be asking individuals who enter the building whether
they have received the vaccine. We look forward to seeing you all again, and to
stamping out COVID-19!
B’Shalom,
Steve Marksamer, Acting President
Rabbi John Franken
I want to thank you all for the warm greetings that I have received over
the past month! I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to work with
so many outstanding teachers, staff members, students, and families this
reopening continue to change often, and I will communicate with
families regarding regulations as they are updated. As always, we will
continue to make decisions with the health and safety of our students
and their families in mind.
If you have a child in the Kehillah MAGNET Religious School this
fall, please remember to complete the previously sent survey regarding
mid-week Hebrew School. Your feedback is invaluable and greatly
The Sisterhood hosted an end of Year Event, and we opened it up to our
whole Congregation. We walked Havre de Grace’s “Lafayette Historic
Pam, who covered our check-in table and checked in about 40
participants! Thanks to Terri, Marcia & Denise for help in the planning
and preparation. Walkers enjoyed bottled water, token Sisterhood gifts,
and bubbles to share with the town visitors! Many enjoyed coffee or
lunch on their own with an easy Buck from us as well.
