If you’re thinking about getting out for a few nights in the wilderness, you could do a whole lot worse than putting your tent stakes down in the ground of the Cook County Forest Preserves. Camp Bullfrog Lake (Willow Springs), Camp Dan Beard (Northbrook), Camp Reinberg (Palatine), Camp Shabbona Woods (South Holland) and Camp Sullivan (Oak Forest) each feature a distinct character, a different selection of amenities and lodging. Some are set near a lake or river; others may be near to a nature center, but whether you’re a seasoned outdoor adventurer or bringing little ones for their first camping experience, the Forest Preserves have you covered. Kenton Ave., Crestwood Ozinga Field welcomes Crestwood families to a safe night out at the ballpark. Bring a blanket and a picnic basket and hang out on the field with your loved ones to watch Raya and the Last Dragon on the stadium’s giant video screen. A fireworks display will follow at 9:00pm. Cost: FREE. (Note: Beer and wine are welcome at Ozinga Field. Hard liquor is prohibited. Any lawn chairs must have rounded edges that will not damage the artificial turf.) WINDY CITY THUNDERBOLTS VS. LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS: HARRY POTTER NIGHT Friday, July 9th, 7:05pm Ozinga Field 14011 S. Kenton Ave., Crestwood Harry Potter Night is back! Appearances by Harry, Hermione, Ron and Hagrid courtesy of Windy City Wishes. The first 500 kids will receive a pair of Harry Potter glasses. A costume parade will take place prior to the game at 6:30pm. (Must be in line by 6:15.) During the game, kids can visit Hogwarts Houses, a Wand-Making Station, and enjoy butter beer (for the adults & kids) at the concession stands. The night closes with the ThunderBolts’ world-famous fireworks show. And, as always, kids run the bases after every home game. MOVIE IN THE MOONLIGHT: “THE CROODS: A NEW AGE” Saturday, July 31, 8:15pm Moraine Valley Community College 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills Moraine Valley Community College’s popular Movie in the Moonlight series returns this summer. This month, “The Croods: A New Age” will be shown on a 16-foot inflatable screen at the Gateway, between Buildings F and M, on campus. Families must bring their own blankets or chairs, and should social distance themselves from other groups. Outside food is welcome. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed on Moraine Valley’s campus. People who need to smoke must do so in their vehicles. In the event of inclement weather, check the website for updates. Movies are subject to change. Admission is FREE. Donations of dry and wet food, treats for cats and dogs, toys and blankets, and cleaning supplies can be brought to the library during regular business hours. Our Pet Supply Drive will run from June 5th – July 31st, 2021. Thank you for your generosity. July Events for Families and Youth Attention Veterans If you were honorably discharged from the U.S. military and believe you suffer from an injury or illness that you contracted because of your service, you are invited to attend a meeting of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 84 in Crestwood to get help in filling a claim for your injury or illness. There is no charge or fees for this service. The DAV is a national service organization comprised of veterans dedicated to helping other veterans receive the medical attention and compensation they deserve. DAV Chapter 84 meets on the First Friday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Elk's Lodge #1596 at 4428 Midlothian Turnpike in Crestwood, Illinois. National and Chapter Service Officers will be available to assist you in filing a claim for compensation and medical assistance. Bring a copy of your DD-214 to the meeting with you.
