Commodores Welcome

Dear All,

On behalf of the members of Bassenthwaite Sailing Club I would like to

extend a warm welcome to all our visiting sailors, families and friends. It’s

been an incredibly difficult 18 months for everyone and it was touch and

go as to whether Bass Week 2021 would go ahead. The relaxation of Covid

restrictions on 19th July allow us to run the event, but due to the ongoing

pandemic, shore-based activities will be somewhat different to previous years

and everyone onsite will be asked to follow guidance detailed in the welcome pack. Sailing however,

will follow a similar format to previous years. The vast majority of you will be Bass Week veterans,

and for those joining us for the first time, welcome aboard and we hope to ensure that our regatta

week becomes a regular fixture in your diary.

16 Sponsors

Calling all parents & guardian. Please complete the

Under 18 Consent Form https://forms.gle/qUzSXoui878Ma9u57

We are very grateful that you are able to join us and we’ll strive to ensure that you have a safe

and enjoyable experience, both on and off the water. Organising Bass Week is a big undertaking

in normal times but, with the uncertainty surrounding Covid, the 2021 event has proved to be

particularly challenging. Bass Week 2021 has been coordinated by Naomi Smith, my predecessor as

Commodore, who together with her Bass Week Team I am immensely grateful.

Phil Smith, our Sailing Secretary, has organised a comprehensive racing programme which, together

with the varied conditions that will no doubt prevail, will hopefully result in close and competitive

racing. We will continue with the revised format for the pursuit races that have been successful

for the last few years (with a moving finishing line). We are delighted to have secured The Lakes

Distillery and CraftInsure.com as our lead sponsors again, together with a range of further

sponsors throughout the week.

Thanks to our Social Secretary, Olivia Leonard, we have an exciting entertainment programme and

details regarding the social activities planned for the week can be found in the welcome pack. We

have moved the majority of social events outside and have earlier finishing times to keep everyone

safe, but I’m sure this will not detract from your enjoyment. Look out for notices on the board for

children’s activities and any other updates.

As with any Sailing Club, we are required to adhere to appropriate regulations for camping and

caravanning and we are working hard to ensure that the letter and spirit of the regulations are

observed whilst still ensuring that all visitors staying on site have an enjoyable and relaxed stay.

I would like to draw everyone’s attention to a few things:

• The gate code for the week is 1278.

• The reception office will be open all day on Friday 30th July and Saturday 31st July and all morning

on Monday 2nd August and Saturday 7th August. If the reception office is not open and you need

some help just ask for one of the Council Members (bar staff will happily point you in the right

direction).

2 3

• Cars are not permitted on the bottom

camping field. If you choose to camp there,

cars will be able to unpack next to the

camping area and assistance will be given to

transporting your tent etc. to your desired

pitch.

• There will not be an onsite chandlery this

year.

• Our onsite catering this year will be

provided outside by Coffee Bean & Gone,

with breakfasts available at Bassenthwaite

Lake Station. A Pizza Van and Fish & Chip Van

will also visit during the week. Full details are

in the information pack.

• Cycling in the vicinity of the Clubhouse

and in and around the dinghy park is not

permitted on Safety grounds. This particularly

applies to small children with sharp

handlebars.

• We are conscious that bottles, broken

glass or other sharp objects can be found in

the lake and would therefore request that

everyone wears appropriate footwear and is

extra vigilant in and around the lake shore,

whether they be sailing or playing.

• In respect of playing around the water’s

edge, we ask that the slipways are kept clear

for launching and recovery at the start and

end of each race. Don’t let this stop the fun

though!

• We urge non-competitors to avoid using the

shower facilities during the hour either side

of the conclusion of racing each day to allow

the sailors access.

• Virtually all those involved in organising and

running the event are volunteers, we would

therefore ask everyone to please tidy up after

themselves whenever and wherever possible.

• Only alcohol purchased at the bar should

be consumed within or environs of the club

house.

• With the exception of guide / assistance

dogs, we do not allow dogs on site during the

regatta week

Our Vice Commodores, Andrea and Ian

Preston will be available on site throughout

the week for any issues that may arise.

Myself and other members of Council will be

pleased to lend assistance should Andrea or

Ian not be available. As ever, our regatta week

is organised and run by a dedicated team of

members and we continue to be very grateful

for anyone who is willing to give a hand with

tasks such as race office or rescue duty, etc.

Please have a word at reception or with Ian,

Andrea, myself or any committee members if

you are able to lend a hand.

Finally, Kim and I hope that you will be

able to join ourselves, the Council and

members of Bassenthwaite Sailing Club, at

the Commodore’s reception on the evening

of Saturday 31st July. Best wishes and please

accept our thanks once again for choosing to

spend your holiday time with us this year.

Jon Denwood, Commodore.

Phil Smith

Sailing Secretary

Welcome to Bass Week 2021!

Your welcome pack includes a copy of the Racing Programme and Sailing

Instructions (SIs). Keep an eye on the official notice board (in the clubhouse

foyer) for any sailing-related notices, including changes to SIs. There will be

a briefing on Saturday when we’ll run through various points in the SIs and

we can answer any queries – or just come and see me beforehand. There are

two pursuit races scheduled: the Nairn Pursuit race on Tuesday afternoon

and the Lifeboat Silver Salver race on Thursday afternoon. For anyone unfamiliar with pursuit racing,

these are handicap races in which the slowest boats start first and are pursued by faster boats

starting later. We will hold a short briefing before each pursuit to explain the format, and feel free

to ask for help if you are not familiar with this format of racing and would like to give it a go. There

will be no Ladies race on Friday afternoon. The Junior Race has been renamed “The Herb Telford

Junior Race”, in memory of our long-time member, sailor, and Official Starter.

Can all Parents/ Guardians please ensure you complete the “Parental & Medial Consent

Form” included within this pack, for all sailors under 18 years of age, and return it to the

race office prior to going afloat. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

Please notify us of any changes to entries in plenty of time before racing, by completing the forms

located on the door of the committee room. This helps us deliver accurate results without delays.

There are also scoring request forms located in the same place to be completed if you have a

query regarding your results. If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, don’t hesitate to

seek me out. I will be very happy to do what I can to help.

I hope you have a fantastic week of racing!

directly onto the grass. Due to the recent prolonged

dry weather please take extra care when using

barbeques. Please ensure that the ashes have cooled

completely before discarding into rubbish bins.

Cars and parking As you will appreciate, Mark

Somerville and the grounds team have worked

tirelessly all year to prepare the site. Please keep all

car movement to a minimum to avoid damage to

the grounds and disturbing your fellow campers.

Those of you who are staying on site will be issued

with a car sticker. Please display this on the front of

your rear view mirror. If you are not staying on site,

please respect those that are staying on site and

Just Offsite ( literally across the A66, you can’t miss

the HUGE train) “The Bass Lake Station Café”. We

are delighted to be working with our newest local

whilst indoors (except whilst seated).

Doctors/Hospital There are GP’s surgeries in

Cockermouth. The nearest A&E department is West

Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Dogs Dogs are not allowed on site during Bass

Week. This includes leaving them in parked cars.

Eating out We would strongly recommend “The

Bassenthwaite Lake Station Café”. However, there

are many local pubs, restaurants and bistros if you

fancy dining out. But be aware the area can be very

busy, so booking is advisable. A full list of restaurants/

pubs is provided by the telephone in the clubhouse.

Fire procedure Within the clubhouse the fire

escape routes are clearly displayed in the foyer and

outside the committee room. There are several fire

extinguisher points within the building and around

the surrounding buildings.

Around the site we have regularly located fire points

which host a fire extinguisher, sand bucket and water

bucket. Please make yourself aware of your nearest

point. Please note that these are for emergency use

only and do not allow children to play with them.

Due to the recent prolonged dry weather it is

essential that the fire points are maintained in full

working order. If you notice any issues with these –

please alert the Bass Week team immediately.

In the case of emergency please contact:

Jon Denwood 07503210116 or Andrea Preston

07535699572. Please make sure that you leave a 3m

are not sailing/racing use the shower facilities whilst

on the sailing club slipways.

12. THE START

12.1 Starting times will be as indicated in the Event

Programme.

12.2 Races will be started as follows. This changes RRS 26.

12.2.1 The Warning Signal (Class flag) for each fleet will

be made four minutes before the start of that fleet.

12.2.2 The preparatory signal will be displayed two

minutes before the first fleet to start

and remain in place until the end of the starting sequence.

12.2.3 The start of each fleet will be signaled by the

removal of the appropriate Warning Signal (class flag). The

preparatory signal will be removed with the final warning

signal in the sequence.

12.3 Fleets will start in the following order:

Fast Handicap

Flying Fifteen

RS200

Medium Handicap

Laser & Laser Radial (Handicap)

Enterprise

GP14

Solo

Slow Handicap

Mirror, Topper & Tera

Committee Boat at the starboard end of the line, and the

port end starting mark. Starting signals will be displayed

from the Committee Boat.

12.5 An inner limit mark displaying a white flag will be

laid approximately on the starting line and boats passing

between it and the Committee Boat at any time will be

liable to disqualification without a hearing. This changes

RRS 63.1.

12.6 The Preparatory signal will be the “I” flag and RRS

30.1 “round the ends” will be in force at all normal starts.

In the case of a general recall start the race committee

reserves the right to use an alternative Preparatory Signal

(“U” or “Black Flag”). No sound or other signal will be

made to indicate the beginning of the last minute before

each start. This changes RRS 30.1.

13. RECALLS

13.1 Individual recalls will be signaled by promptly

displaying Code Flag “X” in accordance with RRS 29.1 and

Race Signals. Boats on the course side shall sail across an

extension to the pre-start side, before starting (“round

the ends”).

13.2 A General Recall will be signaled by displaying the

First Substitute flag accompanied by two sounds in

accordance with RRS 29.2 and Race Signals.

13.3 In the case of a General Recall the start of the

recalled fleet shall move to the end of the starting order.

This changes Rule 29.2 and Race Signals and the following

provisions apply.

13.4 The First Substitute will be removed without a sound

signal before the start of the next fleet in the start order

and the meaning of the First Substitute in Race Signals is

then changed to mean, “This fleet will start after the last

fleet in the start order. The Warning signal for the recalled

fleet will be made two minutes after the Warning Signal

for the last fleet in the starting order is displayed”

13.5 The new start for the recalled class will be signaled

by removal of the Class Flag four minutes after it has

been displayed.

13.6 The starts of any succeeding recalled fleets (if any)

shall follow, unless they are further recalled, in which case

they shall return to the end of the start order, as above.

13.7 The race committee may for any reason postpone a

start or starts in accordance with RRS

27.3 and Race Signals. In which case the start will be

signaled in accordance with SI 12.2, (with the exception

that the Preparatory signal may be in accordance with SI

12.6 for a recalled fleet or fleets).

13.8 The Preparatory signal will be finally removed at the

start of the final fleet.

14. INTERFERENCE WITH BOATS RACING

14.1 Boats that have not started or are not about to start

shall not interfere with boats that have started or are

about to start.

14.2 Boats whose Warning Signal has not been made

shall avoid the starting area during the starting sequence

for other races.

14.3 Boats breaching these requirements may be liable to

a discretionary penalty (DP) without a hearing.

15. CHANGING THE COURSE

15.1 Marks may be moved before or during a race at the

discretion of the Race Committee.

15.2 The Race Committee will attempt to indicate the

direction of the changed mark at or before

the previous mark, either using the procedure in RRS 33

or verbally to all boats involved. This adds to RRS 33.

16. FINISHING

16.1 The fixed finishing line will be between the black

pole on the lake shore and the Finishing Mark (Mark ‘0’).

16.2 After they finish boats shall cross the finishing line

completely. This changes RRS 28.1. In order to avoid

obstructing the finishing line, boats that finish at the fixed

line from the north shall then leave Mark South to port;

boats that finish from the south shall then leave Mark

North to starboard. Failure to do so may result in a

discretionary penalty (DP) without a hearing. This changes

RRS 63.1.

16.3 If the course is shortened, in accordance with RRS

32.2, flag ‘S’ will be displayed from the club flagpole

accompanied by two sounds.

16.4 If the course is shortened on the water the finishing

line shall be between the mast of the Finish Boat

displaying flag “S”, and a nearby rounding mark outside of

which it is stationed, in accordance with RRS 32.2(a).

16.5 If the course is shortened for specific fleets, the

Class Flags (warning signal flags) for those fleets to be

shortened will also be displayed. If the course is to be

shortened for all fleets, no Class Flags will be displayed.

16.6 Boats crossing the finishing line in a group so that
