Guildhall’s Old Prison Cells<br />

One of <strong>Lichfield</strong>’s oldest tourist attractions will<br />

be open<strong>in</strong>g its doors once aga<strong>in</strong> for the first<br />

time <strong>in</strong> almost two years. Follow<strong>in</strong>g the eas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of government restrictions, <strong>Lichfield</strong>’s Old<br />

Guildhall Prison Cells will be open for free<br />

visits throughout <strong>August</strong> on Wednesdays and<br />

Saturdays start<strong>in</strong>g on Wednesday 4th <strong>August</strong>.<br />

The historic landmark, which has been used as<br />

a prison s<strong>in</strong>ce 1548, has a history that spans<br />

across centuries. For the first time, all four of<br />

the exist<strong>in</strong>g cells are now open for visitors to<br />

experience.<br />

For volunteer and visitor safety, some<br />

measures will rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> place, such as limited<br />

numbers, plenty of hand sanitiser, and the<br />

recommendation of face cover<strong>in</strong>gs. Visitors will<br />

also have the opportunity to participate <strong>in</strong> the<br />

government’s Test and Trace scheme by<br />

scann<strong>in</strong>g a unique QR code or sign<strong>in</strong>g a slip.<br />

Summer Fun at Sam’s House<br />

Throughout <strong>August</strong>, The Samuel Johnson<br />

Birthplace Museum will be host<strong>in</strong>g a series of<br />

Summer Fun activities for families.<br />

Based on ‘<strong>Lichfield</strong> Legends’, each session will<br />

allow little ones to make their own bookmarks<br />

like Samuel Johnson, compose their own<br />

collections like Richard Greene, create their<br />

own sea creatures like the ones studied by<br />

Erasmus Darw<strong>in</strong> and craft their own theatre<br />

like the ones David Garrick would have<br />

performed <strong>in</strong>.<br />

Activities will take place every Thursday <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>August</strong> from 11am-2:15pm and the museum<br />

will be limit<strong>in</strong>g sessions to pre-booked tables<br />

(with no m<strong>in</strong>imum and maximum of six per<br />

table, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g adults). Children must be<br />

accompanied by an adult and tickets cost<br />

£3.50 per child.<br />
