Memorial Garden is 20
two RNLI branches,
Lichfield and Tamworth,
created a memorial at
the National Memorial
Arboretum,
Alrewas,
honouring the brave
lifeboat crews who had
given their lives to save
others. A massive
nationwide fundraising
effort saw generous donations form the public
and RNLI branches nationwide and the
memorial garden was created in September
2003, surrounding an impressive statue,
sculpted by stonemason Andrew Fitchett, with
plants representing a seaside theme.
Sadly, the garden was devastated in 2009 when
the river Anker flooded; only the sculpture
survived as testament to the steadfastness of
the RNLI lifeboat crews. The site renovation
was completed in 2011, with planting design by
Chelsea winner, Chris Beardshaw, and remains
Embarking on a Collective Journey:
Shaping the Future of Lichfield
Ilove a good quote - and I read one this week
which really sung to me - "If you want to go
fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go
together."
It felt that this could have been written
specifically for our emerging "Lichfield District
2050" document - as much a strategy as it is a
rallying call for unity. It envisions a future where
Lichfield District stands not only as an exemplar
for the UK but also as a benchmark for others to aspire to. A lofty goal,
admittedly, but one that demonstrates the ambition we find in every
corner of this district.
As I read through the draft document, it's evident that this journey
can't rely on a few organisations to carry on business as usual, but will
require a shared commitment from all of us. The District Council, County
Council, town, city, and parish councils, along with health and emergency
services, are all set to play crucial roles, but it is the unsung heroes – the
community, charity, and third sector organisations – who already pour
their hearts into this place we call home who will make the biggest
impact as we forge ahead. At the heart of this endeavour is you (and yes,
I mean you!) – individuals whose passion and participation will shape our
neighbourhoods over the coming years.
By Doug Pullen, Leader of Lichfield District Council
Four priorities stand as pillars for this ambitious endeavour:
Confidence, Prosperity, Activity, and Green living. Confident communities
that are cohesive and work together to ensure a high-quality life for all of
us; prosperous communities where businesses flourish; active
communities providing a wide range of opportunities to keep us fit and
healthy; and green communities that help us preserve our natural
environment. These aren't just buzzwords; they signify a vision where the
district thrives in every sense. But the proof of the pudding is in the
milestones, set for 2028, 2038, and the ultimate crescendo of 2050. These
are markers that will guide the way, quantifying the progress and keeping
us on track.
However, as the strategy acknowledges, this isn't a path paved by a
select few. It's a road that needs validation, critique, and most importantly,
involvement from everyone who calls Lichfield District home. Is the
ambition grand enough? Does it align with your concerns and values? Can
you see yourself contributing towards its realisation?
I highly encourage you to take this piece of work not as just “another
council strategy," but as a call to action. Your voice matters, your
contribution counts, and your presence in this journey is invaluable.
Please look out for information over the coming weeks, read the strategy,
and let us know the good, the bad and the ugly - but most importantly,
how you might want to get involved!
A Council to be Proud Of
By Darren Ennis, Leader of Burntwood Town Council
Despite the typical ups and downs of a
British August and the unseasonal
rain, our Council team continued to offer
a range of outdoor events and activities
throughout the summer holidays. We
braved the elements to bring the annual
Play in the Parks and no fewer than eight
events were hosted around our local
parks. These events take me back to the
1990s by providing the opportunity to
have a simple meet up with friends, enjoy a picnic and play some
games. It has been a pleasure to see so many young children and their
parents taking advantage of local facilities and simply having fun
together.
Our regular community events and partnerships have continued to
highlight the importance of providing ongoing support to families and
children whilst schools were closed. Play in the Parks provided the ideal
platform for us and our partners to ensure that we can provide food free
of charge for families that may need this support. I believe this, and our
other continued work in the community, is something we can all be rightly
proud of.
We were pleased with the interest from the BBC during Play in the Parks
at Springhill Primary School. They interviewed the Spark team regarding
their partnership with Fairshare and the pressures faced by families over
the summer. We are so fortunate to have a range of amazing community
groups and businesses that have stepped up to work with us to help locally,
10
despite this being a nationwide issue.
Although we celebrate our various achievements to date, Burntwood
Town Council is now focussed on pressing ahead with further amazing
initiatives, including the launch of the Burntwood Town Council Student
Awards in memory of Stephen Sutton MBE. The awards provide the
opportunity for young people in Burntwood to apply for £1,000 which they
may spend on improving and enriching their lives whether this is through
the arts, sporting endeavours or academic studies. We are passionate about
improving and investing in the futures of young people in Burntwood and
we cannot wait to start.
We are also looking forward to the outcome of our marvellous
Sunflower competition. This is open to all children in Burntwood and closes
on the 10th September. To enter the competition, simply send in a picture
of your sunflower, along with its height, to info@burntwood-tc.gov.uk for
a chance to win a £20 book voucher.
The next instalment of our Burntwood Dementia Friendly Walk is to be
held on the 1st of October. The last one had massive turnout even though
it rained cats and dogs! Burntwood Town Council is committed to being a
Dementia Friendly Town, raising awareness of the impact of dementia in
our community, and to highlight the fact that there are services and places
people can go for support locally.
I am always proud of what we achieve as a council, how we always punch
above our weight, and how our staff go above and beyond to make sure
Burntwood is a better place for all. We continue to invest in our young
people, work with community groups and support our residents wherever
we can. A council to be proud of.

flower well – the rain and cooler temperatures have actually
helped some perennials to flower for longer without getting too
leggy (so it’s not ALL bad news)! Continue to plant these through
this month, as they will return every year so it’s a good long-term
investment.
The miserable summer has also meant for some people a
premature end to their summer bedding plant display, with winds
and heavy rain damaging stems and wrecking flowers. Now is the
time to replace & renew… Pansies and viola as well as heathers,
chrysanthemums, campanula and asters are all now looking good.
All these are in bud and flower and most will survive well beyond
this autumn. Just keep removing any dead flowers and they will
produce more. Plants like the heather are also grown for their
bright foliage so look good even when they are not in flower.
You can now plant an autumn crop of many vegetables – either
from seed, or by using ready grown vegetable seedlings. Quick
maturing veg like radish, spring onion, lettuce and others are now
available, and you can also get cabbage, broccoli and spinach to
harvest later on. Don’t forget your crop of Christmas potatoes –
get these planted in large pots on your patio for a delicious crop
of spuds in November and December.
Finally, spring bulb season is already upon us! We’ll look into this
in more detail next time, but for those of you who want to be
prepared, the first spring bulbs are now ready – favourites like
dwarf daffodils, crocus, iris and alliums are now available – you
don’t have to plant them straight away, but buy them early for the
best selection. If you are desperate to get them growing, consider
planting them into regular plant pots so you can plunge them into
borders when you have space later in the month.
Great Global
Greyhound Walk
September 24th
By Lauren Hirst
Do you own a sighthound or are interested in owning a
sighthound? Greyhounds, lurchers, salukis, whippets,
galgos, podencos, and many others all over the world will
be promoting sighthounds as pets and walking on the same day at
The Great Global Greyhound Walk.
need more practise at getting ready to live as a family pet.
Greyhounds do like their own kind and can be quite different to other
breeds of dogs. Group walks offer adopted greyhounds and their owners
a chance to get together, socialise, and share their love of the breed.
There is a saying the greyhound world, “adopt a greyhound, join a cult!”
Dogs like Ricky have been waiting such a long time for a forever family.
Ricky is a dog who needed more practise coping with the outside world
and through the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, he’s much
improved and more than ready to love someone with all his heart and
soul. If Ricky isn’t right for you, we have up to 40 dogs in our kennels –
big ones, small ones, bouncy ones, quiet ones and everything in between
just waiting to be loved as someone’s pet. Please give us a ring on 01121
426 4810 or visit the website www.greyhoundtrusthallgreen.org.uk to
find out more.
In 2022, 10,620 sighthounds joined the fun in 432 walks across 29
countries. Greyhound Trust Hall Green was just one of many who joined
in at our walks in three locations, Beacon Park in Lichfield, Waseley Hills
in Birmingham, and at the Country Park in Worcester. If you’d like to join
in check out the GGGW website for a walk near you
(www.greatglobalgreyhoundwalk.co.uk). New walks are being added all
the time.
Group walks are a great way for prospective owners to come and
‘meet the breed’ if you are thinking of adopting a greyhound but don’t
know much about them. GTHG walk locally each month on the 1st
Saturday in Tamworth Park and the 3rd Sunday in Beacon Park. Both
circular walks start at 11am and take about 40 minutes. You may have
seen us walking around the Stowe Pool or the Pleasure Gardens.
It's also a great way for us to get our kennels dogs out and about to
socialise. Greyhounds only know about kennel and track life and our job
as volunteers is to get them used to the big wide world outside of racing
kennels. While racing, greyhounds won’t have seen bicycles, pushchairs,
other dogs who aren’t greyhounds, ducks, geese, or experience the
sights and smells of the “real world”. Some take to it without missing a
heartbeat while others find it all rather scary and overwhelming and
Got a story or charity
event you want to share
with our readership? Think
you’ve snapped an image
that captures the spirit of
the region? We want to
hear from you!
It’s Never too
Early for Ghosts!
By Lesley Smith,
Curator of Tutbury Castle
I believe in creaks, cold wind, birds and
animals scurrying around on roofs of the
ancient Tutbury Castle, but I also believe in
‘something else’. I do agree, however, that
there is an eagerness to experience such
things in an old castle (with the caveat ‘Not
too scary, please!’)
Occasionally we arrange for experienced
actors to come into the castle for a fun
evening, when guests expect to have someone
jump out on them, causing much screaming,
running and merriment. Sometimes, however,
things go horribly wrong. One evening we
were expecting an international blue-chip
company to visit the castle for a ‘ghost hunt’ with overseas guests
too. I tend to leave the ‘ghosts’ to decide where they will appear, as
they all know the stories about our more famous ghosts. There was
quite a little team from the other side - all in full costume, including
a knight in armour who jumped out at John of Gaunt’s gatehouse as
people arrived and left. A monk decided he would lie on the floor
behind a shed with his head sticking out at ground level. This was a
particularly daft idea as nobody saw him. He moaned a bit, I am told,
but people just looked round and missed him – all evening! I would
have thought he would have had the sense to move to the other
part of the castle, but he was wedded to his idea of a moaning head.
The Black Prince looked magnificent in black velvet, and I was
dressed as myself, about to turn into Mary Queen of Scots. Not
wishing to do things by half we had a top-quality chef and his team
in to prepare the food in full chef’s whites.
enough to leap out at us on the way out, which was not what I
needed at that moment, but at least he was being vigilant!
I arrived back at the Castle (the knight jumped out again!) and to
my horror the chef in whites was trotting over the grass towards
me with a blood-red tea towel clamped over his hand, because he
had chopped into it and needed stitches. “Get out!” I said
unsympathetically to the Black Prince, and “Get in!”
unsympathetically to the chef, as I drove yet again back to A&E that
I had only left 10 minutes earlier (and yes, the knight in armour
jumped out yet again!) We arrived at the hospital and I went in with
this bloodied chef and saw that the majority of patients were the
same patients I saw some minutes earlier. We wedged ourselves on
two seats below the TV shelf when suddenly the atmosphere
changed and people looked at Simon and myself, and also at the TV
screen above us, and back to us again.
I stood up and had a look. There on TV were Simon and I, as we
had made a TV series that year together about catering at the
Castle and it was on ITV at peak time. Simon started laughing and
then I started laughing, but actually it was probably hysteria setting
in at this pantomime we had provided! I was in enough time to drive
him back, shout at the knight in armour and get changed, with
minutes to spare. Meanwhile, the monk by the shed was still being
ignored!
If you would like to find out more about the Tutbury Castle
ghosts we have several events approaching. On 15th September and
I am appearing at the castle as “The Witch of Manningtree” from the
days of the so called Witchfinder General in the 17th century (it
scares the hell out of the staff which is satisfying).
On Friday 13th October, we have a paranormal event at the castle
when individuals can get tickets to meet some of the famous TV
ghosthunters. The next day (14th October) we are having a day of
paranormal investigations with individuals able to look around the
castle, enjoy the stalls and meet diviners and ley line specialists,
along with mediums.
For further information, visit website
www.friday13thhaunted.com which details lots of ghostly events
coming up at Tutbury Castle.
18
All was well, and I had one hour and 10 minutes left to make sure
everything was good and then change and scare the hell out of the
guests before the meal, when panic broke out! I might have known
that an hour left was a luxury in time that was too good to be true!
“You will have to come quick," said the woman in white (North
Tower ghost in her nightie). “The Black Prince has to go to
hospital!” I rushed over to the Black Prince, who was wailing and
nursing his arm. “Look!” he cried. He had been zapped by an insect,
but I quickly ascertained that he was not allergic to stings. It just
hurt, and his hand was swelling (a bit). So, we rushed off to Burton
A&E and dashed into casualty as I wanted to get him sorted and get
back. “This is Simon,” I said. “He’s been stung.” The woman tried not
to snigger at the sight of the Black Prince in Casualty. Other openmouthed
patients were not so restrained! He was seen and treated
quickly and we rushed him back to castle with time to spare. I was
conscious that the knight in armour at the gate had been kind

Lichfield’s Lost Pubs
The Turk’s Head
By Jono Oates
Last month’s lost pub of Lichfield was the Goat’s Head on Bore Street and this
month’s feature is another pub with a ‘head’ in the name – the Turk’s Head of
Sandford Street. The Goat’s Head building changed its use when it closed,
becoming a bank, but in the case of the Turk’s Head it was one of the many lost pubs
that suffered a sad fate – it was completely demolished.
The pub stood on the Sandford Road, close to the Queen’s Head on Queen Street, and
was established by 1781. James Godwin was the landlord in 1818 and when he died, he was
succeeded by his widow, Jane. The Turks was up for sale by auction in September 1835
when It was described as being located at the end of Friars’ Alley (the small alleyway
leading from Bird Street along the back of the old Franciscan Friary, leading out to the car
park on Swan Road) and close to the ‘new road’ leading off towards Walsall. It was listed
as a ‘large convenient house; and attached thereto is a spacious yard, coach-house,
extensive stabling, and piggeries.’ The lease was for 21 years, from 1833 onwards, and the
annual rent was 20 shillings - £10 in today’s money.
Pubs at this time were often used to hold inquests into the deaths of local residents and
the Turk’s Head was the location into an inquest of a tragic death in July 1845. Mr
Dorrington, a skinner (a person who skinned the animals in preparation for the leather
trade) who lived on Sandford Street was searching for his son John, who had gone missing
after going out to play with his friends. He found his five-year-old son in a crouched
position at the bottom of a wash pit, used for washing the animal skins, where he had
drowned, presumably having accidentally fallen in to the pit, with the coroner ruling
accidental death.
The general election of 1868 caused great controversy in Lichfield as previously there
had been two Members of Parliament for Lichfield city, but in that year it was reduced
down to just one MP, meaning that the two main candidates bitterly contested the single
remaining seat. Each of the candidates, from rival parties, were accused of underhand
tactics and skullduggery (some things never change!) and inquests were held in January
1869 to investigate the accusations from both sides. Major Augustus Anson, a son of
Thomas Anson, first Earl of Lichfield, was the Liberal candidate and Colonel Richard Dyott,
of Freeford Manor, was the Conservative. Both candidates had been accused of bribing
voters with monies and with free gifts, including beer at local pubs. At the inquest of
January 1859 Patrick Smith, a labourer, stated that he went to the Turk’s Head and standing
by the door was Colonel Dyott with Mr Coxon and three other men, all supporters of
Dyott. Patrick said that there was ‘a great deal of drink there’, brought in by Mr Reeve,
father of the landlady of the pub, Mary Reeve. Patrick said that he drank so much that he
could ‘barely see’ but he did see Mr Coxon give Mr Reeve four sovereigns. Patrick didn’t
pay for any of the drinks he consumed and said that Mr Coxon had told him that he should
vote for Colonel Dyott at the following day’s election. The courts found it very difficult to
prove that wrong-doing had definitely taken place and Colonel Dyott retained the seat that
he had won at the 1868 election, serving as MP for Lichfield until 1880.
John Arthur Holloway was the proprietor by November 1899, when he advertised that
the Turk’s Head welcomed cyclists and visitors to the well-established hotel, that terms
were reasonable for both small and large parties, there was a fine choice of wines and
spirits and that they had ‘cigars of the best brands’.
Noted Lichfield builders J R Deacon and Sons renovated the Turk’s Head in March 1933
stating that ‘friends old and new are heartily invited to visit the New and Commodious
premises’. At that time Deacon Works FC were a very successful local football team and
held their monthly meetings at the pub.
The pub continued to the mid-1980s when it was forced to close down, when the new
Turks Head pub sign 1970s
Turks Head just before
demolitlion,1985
Turks Head 1901, landlord
James Holloway
Swan Relief Road was built in 1990/1, whose
route took it straight through the location of the
Turk’s Head, the last landlord being Joe Mancell.
The pub was completely demolished and today
there is no sign of where one of Lichfield’s most
traditional pubs once stood.
Tastes of the Season
By Simon Smith
Autumn Days!
As we glide, refreshed, into September
after the summer holidays, it’s time to
think of autumn fruits which are either
dripping off the trees in the garden or
flooding the shelves in the
supermarkets.
This year, I’ve had a good crop of figs in
the greenhouse, a lower crop of pears
on the tree and less apples than normal.
Tomatoes, as ever, are dropping off the
stems as we always seem to plant more than we ever need,
therefore a tomato recipe is essential this month. We also have
three olive trees in the garden which are doing remarkably well
and bearing a lot of fruit. Last year I tried curing my own olives
using a saline solution which I changed every week for a month
(as per internet instructions). Unfortunately, the result was a
disaster so I need to revisit that one this year! It does show at
least that Mediterranean plants are now fruiting further north.
Herbs which are now passing their best but growing in abundance
can be picked, chopped, and put into an ice cube tray with some
water and frozen. You can then use these in the winter months
added to a sauce at the last minute to keep them green. If you
have soft fruits these can also be blitzed in a bullet, passed through
a sieve and frozen in the same way. Use as an ice cube during a
celebratory event as an ice cube in your wine, Prosecco or
Champagne.
Bottling and preserving fruits as a whole is a relaxing pastime and
will take your horticultural labours into the winter months. It’s a
large subject and too big for me to cover in this article but a good
session on Google will answer all your questions. Some years ago,
there was a shortage of Poire William where you would have a
whole pear in a bottle with eau de vie. For this, they put the bottle
around the pear buds on the tree and let the pear grow inside the
bottle, supported by a frame. After bad winds all the bottles were
blown off the trees - Quelle catastrophe!
This month I’m doing a couple of easy recipes to use those fruits
mentioned above. Recipes are for four people.
3 tbsp olive oil
Salad Leaves
Method
Peel the pears, cut in half, remove
the pips from the centre and
slice. Put onto a tray, brush with
olive oil and cook gently under a
grill for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with
the grated Stilton and grill again
gently until it has melted. Place
the walnuts on and give it
another few seconds under the
grill. Serve on the toasted
sourdough with some salad
leaves. For the more adventurous,
try it with pickled walnuts
instead for a sweeter soft taste.
Baked Nectarines with Mascarpone
4 x ripe nectarines
8ozs mascarpone
4tbsp honey
6ozs whole blanched almonds
Cinnamon
Caster sugar
Method
Cut the nectarines in half and
remove the stones. Lay on a
baking sheet and pour the
honey into the hole where the
stone was. Gently toast the
blanched almonds under a grill
until golden, but keep and eye
on them. Cook the nectarines
in a preheated oven at 160°C
Oozing with Rustic Charm!
By Kristen Lackajis
Whether grabbing a light bite, or sitting down to a heavier
meal, there’s something about lunch that I absolutely
love! Not too early in the morning, and plenty of time to
recover before evening, it is definitely my favourite meal of the day!
Therefore, I was delighted to be invited along to Thyme Kitchen at
Curborough, on the outskirts of Lichfield, to enjoy a bite to eat.
The restaurant bistro is a delight in itself. Tucked away in a corner of
the courtyard, this converted former barn is full of character and period
charm. Beautiful oak beamed ceilings and brick fireplaces hark back to the
farming era, while contemporary touches such as the inlaid spotlights and
light paintwork bring the eatery bang up to date!
The food itself is a celebration of all things fresh and local, and not only
does it taste incredible, but it looks stunning too! Having stared at the
menu deliberating, supping a glass of Pinot Grigio, and turning the poor
waitress away at least twice while I tried to make my choice, I finally
settled on a dish which has both featured in, and been recommended by,
the Sunday Times Style Magazine. Herby Corn Fritters, accompanied by
spicy tomato jam, Greek yoghurt, coriander and a free range poached egg
just sounded too good to miss out on. Add bacon? Of course I did! Plus,
a portion of chorizo for good measure!
Totally divine, incredibly moreish, and just the most delightfully pretty
plate I had ever seen (edible flowers!), this really hit the spot.
My guest was equally bowled over by his choice of a Breakfast Naan,
which arrived bursting with all our morning favourites of sausage, bacon,
fried egg, and spicy tomato jam, but also had Greek yoghurt, coriander
and nigella seeds to give it a refreshing twist. And yes, more beautiful
edible flowers here too!
To say we were stuffed to the gills by the generous portions was an
understatement, however we boldly soldiered on and decided that the
only way to round off such a wonderful lunch out, was with a cinnamon
swirl bun! Soft, sweet and spicy all at the same time, topped with oodles
of frosting, we made light work of it, savouring every warming bite – the
perfect autumnal treat!
Thyme Kitchen at Curborough Countryside Centre serves breakfast,
brunch and lunch from 10am-3pm Tuesday to Saturday, cakes and coffee
from 10am-4pm Tuesday to Sunday, and on a Sunday it offers brunch from
10am-12.15pm, and a Sunday roast from 1pm-3pm.
If has a fully licensed bar area, a takeaway option for its cakes and
pastries, plus there is a beautifully decorated private function room
available for special occasions.
Every month, Thyme Kitchen hosts Sauce Supper Club - a guest chef pop-up
event which features some of the UK’s top chefs.
Family Funeral Business
Unites HQ in Lichfield
One of the UK's leading funeral suppliers - the familyowned
Jukes Group - has set up its company
headquarters in Lichfield. The decision means that the
family's funeral businesses are now united under the same roof.
The group has moved its headquarters to Tamworth Street, from
where the company's six coffin and funeral supplies factories are now
run, sharing its new home with Jukes Funeral Services.
Jukes Funeral Services has been providing its class-leading services to
bereaved families in and around Lichfield since 2017, with coffins and
floristry all supplied from the group's family.
The Jukes Group can trace its roots back more than 70 years when
brothers Derick and Dennis Jukes, who ran a joinery business in Balsall
Heath supplying the local building trade, began making coffins for a
local funeral director and soon became the major coffin supplier in the
region.
The group is now run by Stewart Jukes, the son of Derick, and his
wife Katherine. Stewart joined the business in 1981 as a bench hand,
and worked his way up to director. Under his leadership the business
has grown substantially.
Stewart and Katherine's three daughters are also involved in the
family businesses; Sophie is owner and managing director of Jukes
Funeral Services, Jemma, who qualified at the Covent Garden Academy
of Floristry, specialises in bespoke funeral floristry, while Pip runs the
company's e-commerce and social media.
Sophie Jukes said: "From our offices in Lichfield we are able to offer
a first-class service for families, with a focus on detail. Having control
of funeral floristry and coffin supply gives us more control of the
overall service which can sometimes elude the larger providers."
Jemma Jukes said funeral and sympathy flowers could be a sensitive
subject, but with the experience of her family behind her she was able
to advise on the most appropriate floral tributes.
"As part of the process, we will discuss favourite colours and flowers,
even if it’s something out the ordinary. We are able to accommodate
specific or unusual requests appropriate for the deceased. After we
have agreed on the tributes, the client can have the peace of mind from
knowing that they will be perfect on the day,".
Jukes Funeral Services opened its second funeral home in Tamworth
in 2018, and a third in Brownhills earlier this year. All three branches
offer the same level of personal and professional service to the
bereaved, drawing on the family's extensive experience in looking after
people at a difficult time in their lives.
Stewart Jukes said the move to Lichfield was the natural thing to do
as the family home was just outside the city in Longdon Green, and the
Jukes Funeral Services funeral homes were headquartered in Lichfield.
The Jukes Group includes Midland Funeral Supplies which has coffinmaking
facilities in West Bromwich, Beverley in East Yorkshire, Uptonon-Severn
in Worcestershire, Plymouth and Perth and Annan in
Scotland.
What the Blazes?
The History of Lichfield’s Fire Service
By Jono Oates
Today’s fire service is modern and efficient, using the latest technology and
equipment with a fully trained, experienced and full-time crew but this has certainly
not always been the case in the fire service of the past where crews often had to
work with outdated vehicles and equipment.
One of the earliest references to a fire service in Lichfield goes all the way back to 1659 when
Sir Richard Dyott, of Freeford Manor, gave £30 to the ‘bayliffs and citizens of Lichfield to be
bestowed upon a brasse engine for the quenching of houses that are on fire’.
A fire broke out at the farm of Mr Arblaster at Longdon, just outside Lichfield, in September
1841 when a hayrick spontaneously caught fire after the hay had not been dried out correctly. A
Birmingham fire engine, stationed at Lichfield, attended followed by a Lichfield tender and the
blaze was put out before it spread to the farm buildings. The Birmingham engine was on duty for
another farm fire, this time Mr Chamberlain’s farm at Huddlesford in January 1865. It took the
crew two hours to tackle the fire, though their task was helped by the abundant supply of water
from the nearby Huddlesford Canal, and £100 of damage was caused. Luckily for Mr Chamberlain
the property had been insured against risk of fire by the Sun Fire Office for many years. The Sun
Insurance company supplied insurance for many properties across the whole of the country.
Properties covered by their insurance were allowed to attach a Sun fire metal plaque on to the
wall of the building, with their unique insurance number on it, which notified the fire crews that
the building had got the appropriate insurance.
A disastrous and tragic fire occurred on 15th January 1873 at the home of William Corfield, a
watchmaker at number 9 Breadmarket Street. The fire broke out in the early hours of the
morning and William, his wife, four young children and his mother-in-law all perished in the fire.
It was this dreadful event that motivated the City Council to make improvements to the fire
service, in terms of equipment and crew, in Lichfield.
By 1896 there were calls for Lichfield to acquire a new steam-powered fire engine, as there
were concerns that the current engine would not be able to cope with a fire at Lichfield’s larger
buildings, especially the cathedral. This was further illustrated in December 1897 by the disaster
at Wrottesley Hall, near Wolverhampton, which was totally destroyed by fire and created
national headlines over the concerns of noted heritage buildings being at risk from fire. In 1898
Albert Octavius Worthington, owner of the Worthington Brewery, who lived at Maple Hayes,
presented the city with a new steam fire engine at his own cost. Worthington made one
condition, that the engine should also be used to assist at fires of Lichfield’s neighbours, as long
as they were within a ‘reasonable distance’.
The engine was replaced over twenty years later, in August 1922, when the Mayor, Councillor
JR Deacon (also see my lost pubs article on the Turk’s Head) confirmed the acquisition of a
Leyland Motors 300-gallon turbine fire engine. The engine, with other equipment, would cost
£1,500 and Mayor Deacon announced that the City Council would supply £750 of the total cost,
and that they would approach the Ministry of Health for a loan of the remaining £750.
A second fire engine for Lichfield was proposed in February 1936, with the purchase, and
ongoing, costs being shared by the two local councils, Lichfield City and Lichfield Rural District
councils. The new engine made its debut in the July of that year, a Dennis six-cylinder 90 BHP
model, capable of reaching speeds of 60 mph on the flat and 10 mph on a gradient. Both engines
were housed on the lower floor of the Lichfield Guildhall, one tucked in line behind the other,
very hard to believe now, but the engines were much smaller, and slimmer, than the fire engines
of today! After the Guildhall, the Friary grounds, alongside the Friary Road, became the new
home to the fire vehicles.
The Birmingham Road fire station opened in 1964 and the Lichfield Fire Service presented the
Mayor, Councillor Bernard ‘Anch’ Garman with a de-commissioned fire engine, first used in 1941,
to be placed in the children’s adventure playground in Beacon Park.
The 1960s building was demolished in 2015, to be replaced by the state-of-the-art building,
now the Lichfield Community Fire Station, with the crews still fighting fires across Lichfield and
beyond.
Councillor Dave Robertson Leader of the Council
Welcome to this issue of City View
Connecting with the community in Lichfield is one of the central
missions of the new City Council. The process of moving from being a
Council focused on the Mayor and Sheriff and towards one which
works for the whole community is well underway.
The Council supported Lichfield’s first ever Pride march this June and
proudly flew a rainbow flag over the Guildhall for the weekend
celebration. But simply saying “we are here” can never be everything
that we do and the people who call Lichfield home can rightly expect
us to act on the issues that matter to them.
We’ve wasted no time in taking action to support our friends,
neighbours, and relatives through the cost-of-living crisis, providing
more leisure activities, especially for young people and doing our bit to
act on the climate crisis.
As the school holidays began, we acted to free up thousands of pounds
of additional grant funding for community groups to offer free activities
for young people in the City over the six weeks’ break that will support
over 100 days of free sports coaching and an event to support young
people maintaining their bikes.
We have also brought Lichfield ‘Back to School Bank’ in house at the
Council, offering administrative support and additional resourcing to
support the scheme which recycles good quality used uniform to new
homes for free, helping us to not only reduce the waste sent to landfill,
but also offers parents a cost-free alternative to school uniform bills as
the new school term approaches. Yet again, the support from the
community has been astounding with hundreds upon hundreds of
items already donated and more coming in every day. To all those who
have been able to donate, thank you.
We’ve been busy in the Council chamber too, giving permission to a
community group to install solar panels on one of our buildings and
setting up a new climate change and biodiversity committee which will
work alongside our community to reduce the impact we have on the
planet.
We have also provided funds for improvements at Lichfield Sport Club
which will enable more people to access their facilities and take part in
the clubs that call the venue
home.
Finally, it has been a pleasure to
see the City Council’s foxglove
tree in Remembrance Gardens
Campaign to
Protect 470-Year-
Old Tradition
Campaign to
revive unique
Sheriff’s Ride will
increase accessibility
and unite the
community.
Campaigners are
working to protect a
unique event – the annual
Lichfield Sheriff’s Ride –
which has been central to
Lichfield’s heritage for
470 years.
The ride, first
commissioned in Queen
Mary’s Charter of 1553,
and featuring in its heyday
as many as 200 horses
and riders, has taken place
uninterrupted every year
since. Following Covid
and a Council resolution
last year to significantly
curtail the ride, a group of
Councillors, ex-Sheriffs,
landowners, riders and
concerned members of
the public are now championing a return of the event to ‘full strength’,
aiming to increase accessibility and community engagement.
The Sheriff’s Ride is embedded into the fabric of Lichfield’s history.
It was first written into the 1553 Charter, which separated Lichfield
from Staffordshire, creating a new county with its own Sheriff.
Following the terms set down in the original charter, the modern ride
features as many as 80 horses and covers some 21 miles, encircling
Lichfield and keeping as close as possible to the City boundary.
Although a unique historic event in the UK, the future of the ride
is now under significant threat. The last full ride took place in 2019,
and, following the council resolution, support for the full Sheriff’s Ride
has ceased as a cost saving measure.
Now, a group set up under the umbrella of the Lichfield Shrievalty
Association is looking to revitalise the ride and restore it to its place
as a popular and traditional part of the Lichfield calendar.
This year the ride will take place on Saturday 9th September with
more than 50 riders already registered to take part. Funding will come
from entry fees, sponsorship and grants, and the group remains
hopeful for some support from the City Council. Although this year’s
ride will only cover half of the traditional route, the organisers hope
their campaign will see the ride restored to its traditional complete
circuit of the city by next year. Plans are also underway to increase
the accessibility of the event.
to take part can be found at
Five Minutes With…
Joanne Wilson
As former Museums and
Heritage Officer for Lichfield
City Council, Joanne Wilson
was manager and curator at the
Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum,
the Guildhall Old Prison Cells, and she
has also worked on lots of other
heritage-related projects over the
years, including organising the plaque
for Francis Barber that was installed
on Cruck House this year.
Joanne left her position at the end of
August to pursue new ventures, however
she had a few minutes to tell us about her
life as a familiar Lichfield face!
• To begin with, could you tell us a little
bit about yourself. For example, are you a Lichfield lady born and bred? If not, when did
you move to the area?
I live in Derbyshire now, but I've got strong Lichfield links - my family moved here
from Birmingham when I was in my teens, I went to King Edward's School, and my
parents still live in the City.
• What did your job at the Museum entail on a daily/weekly basis?
No day is the same – I could be changing the collection items on display, supporting
our fantastic volunteer and Museum Attendant teams with their projects, planning
family craft activities, lecturing university students, writing an article for the Museum
blog, meeting with our book club, or speaking to our architects and contractors about
our exciting plans for development. The variety of things I’ve been involved with over
the years has been incredible.
• Prior to your current role, did you have a lot of involvement with the City?
Believe it or not, I took part in an event organised by the Johnson Birthplace
Museum when I was only 10 years old! It was a Read-a-thon to launch a new edition
of Samuel Johnson’s letters in 1992, and my Dad worked for the publisher. It was held
at the wonderful Staffs Bookshop run by Peter Stockham that used to be on Dam
Street. Little did we know I’d be back at the Museum as curator years later!
• How did you get into the industry you work in?
I've always had a passion for history, and I specialised in History of Art and
particularly the history of printing at university. I’ve worked in posts at Birmingham
Museums, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, and at the British Museum in London
before I came to work in Lichfield.
After 15 years in my current post, I am leaving to undertake a research project
about the role of women in the 18th century bookselling and printing trade in the
Midlands.
• How did the Covid pandemic affect your industry?
Like all tourism and hospitality businesses, museums were badly affected - the doors
had to close twice for long periods. In that time we concentrated on our social media
and digital offering and ran some online events, so we continued to engage with our
community as much as we could. Visitor numbers are gradually returning to normal,
and school visits are back, so this year feels positive.
• And finally, what does Lichfield mean to you?
Lichfield will always have a very special place in my heart. The City is an absolute
gem and it has been an honour to have been part of preserving and promoting our
heritage treasures.
Spotlight On…
Kikimora Records
Brand new independent
record label, Kikimora
Records, was co-founded
by Rosie Tee and Emily Doyle.
We find out more prior to
upcoming Lichfield show, In
The Bellows, to be held at the
iconic Sandfields Pumping
Station.
• To begin with, could you tell
us a little bit about yourself. For
example, are you a local lady? If
not, when did you move to the
area?
Rosie Tee is very much a local
lass - she grew up in Burntwood,
but spent most weekends and
evenings of her teenage years in Lichfield playing in bands with friends,
whether that be in the 20+ youth ensemble Wildfire Folk founded by
Lichfield Arts, or indie-folk quartet The Offbeat.
When Rosie moved down the road to Birmingham in 2015 to study
Music Composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, she ended
up meeting multimedia creative Emily Doyle through the thriving local
music scene. After working together to deliver Supersonic Festival in
2022, Kikimora Records was born!
• Can you tell us, in your own words, what it is you do?
We founded Kikimora Records as a way of championing excellent
artists across many fields in our growing ecosystem of musicians,
videographers, sound engineers, DJs, photographers, visual artists and
more.
We produce enchanting events that showcase performers and inspire
audiences, including the co-production of Nightgarden Festival
(audiovisual delights in Manchester’s hinterland) and our upcoming
Lichfield show, In The Bellows. In The Bellows will take place in the
historic Sandfields Pumping Station. A collaboration with Lichfield Arts,
the programme explores the imaginative spaces between folk, jazz,
electronic and ambient music.
When not cultivating the Kikimora community we’re both busy
creatives in our own right. Rosie writes and performs with her four-piece
band and creates atmospheric music for sound installations (if you’re
ever in Coventry War Memorial Park, check out Sound Seat!). Emily
makes visual art under the moniker of Old Bort, and plays bass and
synthesisers in various bands around Birmingham, from spaghettifuturists
The Devil and Saint Joseph to angry post-punks Luxury Nan
Smell and Exotic Pets.
• How did you get into the industry? Has music always been a passion
of yours?
Music has been a huge part of both of our lives. Rosie’s parents are
both musicians, so there was always music playing in her childhood
home. After realising she’d rather write her own music than play other
peoples’, Rosie went to study Composition and never looked back. Rosie
has always been quite visually led and interested in how art forms
crossover, so producing events is a natural fit. Not long ago her band
performed an atmospheric set at Sandfields Pumping Station
themselves, and went on to take the show to Moseley Road Baths.
Emily grew up in deepest darkest Somerset on a diet of Deep Purple,
Queen, and Led Zeppelin from her parents’ collection, saving up her
pocket money to buy the cheapest electric guitar she could find online.
When she finally made it to the bright lights of Birmingham as an
eighteen-year-old she wasted no time in getting to every gig possible.
After a fair few years either on stage or in the front row of shows, she’s
got a finely honed sense of what makes for a good event.
• Which artists inspire and influence you the most, both growing up
and now?
We’re both huge fans of Bjork, which will be no surprise to anyone
that’s seen us DJ together. Her musical identity is so distinctive but so
fluid - she’s managed to create so many different sounds over the years
but still always sound like Bjork. We love how ecologically grounded her
work is, while still sitting at the forefront of innovation and with striking,
considered visuals. All that, and she can still drop an absolute banger
when she wants to.
Neither of us like to sit in a box with our own music making so as
individuals our influences are pretty broad. Rosie takes inspiration from
the orchestral compositions of Laura Mvula and the psychedelic synths
of Broadcast, while Emily’s influenced by the garage attitude of The
Cramps, the lush textures employed by Wendy Carlos and Isao Tomita,
and the unbridled heaviness of doom bands like Electric Wizard and
Sleep.
• What motivates you to create your music?
We’re both hugely motivated by collaboration - either with other
musicians, or the interplay between performer, space and audience. We
founded Kikimora Records as a framework for collaboration, so our goal
is to build an ecosystem not just for musicians but for everyone involved
in producing great live music events - sound engineers, photographers,
designers, curators, DJs…putting on a great show is a bit like a barn
raising. If you get all the right parties in a room together, magic can
happen.
• How important do you feel that music as an art form is to society?
Music is one of the most immediate and accessible art forms - even if
they haven’t sought it out, most people hear music at some point during
their day. It can be a tool for expression, for connection, for celebration
and for building community.
• What are your favourite, and least favourite, parts of the profession?
At the end of the day we’re doing this because we love seeing
innovative, immersive live events happen. When you’ve got an incredible
artist, a magical space, a beautiful crowd and an electric atmosphere,
and you can just stop and breathe it all in…that’s what we’re in it for.
When the show’s over and it’s time to pack down can be less fun. It’s
all hands on deck, and with ambitious artists there often comes
ambitious instruments; showing up to a venue with a ten piece post-rock
band to find the goods lift was broken wasn’t our finest moment. On the
plus side, we save on gym membership!
• And finally, what does Lichfield mean to you?
Rosie in particular sees Lichfield as the place that shaped much of
who she is as an artist. It’s where she met Nightgarden producer Bryony
Simcox, who’s created all the Rosie Tee EP covers music videos. She was
gigging from a young age with the support of Lichfield arts, busking
outside the Guildhall, and even singing in the cathedral. For Kikimora
Records, Lichfield’s community and history are full of opportunity. We
can’t wait to bring In The Bellows to Sandfields Pumping Station on 7th
October, and introduce our artists Alys Rain, Zyggurat, and Me Lost Me
to the city.
