LOCAL NEWS
Cathedral Awarded
Funding
Works to restore the badly damaged central
spire at Lichfield Cathedral have begun thanks
to funding received from The National Lottery
Heritage Fund. The 12 month project totalling
almost £1m aims to restore the structure,
reopen the space to visitors, and explore what
the iconic landmark means to its local residents.
Originally built in the 1300s and almost
completely destroyed during the English Civil
War, the iconic central spire of Lichfield
Cathedral has been rebuilt and restored across
the centuries. This funding gives Lichfield
Cathedral a unique opportunity to explore why
people have been moved to keep the spire
standing, why it has always been so important to
the community and what it means to people
today.
In addition to the grant from the National
Lottery Heritage Fund, significant funds have
also been pledged by the Garfield Weston
Foundation, the Wolfson Foundation, HS2
Community and Environment Fund, and the
Headley Trust, along with many other grants and
donations generously contributed by hundreds
of donors.
Working Together
Whether it’s negotiating international
treaties, or deciding on where to place a
litterbin, good governance and successfully
implementing policies hinge upon the ability of
political leaders to work together. The
willingness to work well together, or even to
“disagree agreeably” is as crucial locally as it is
nationally - it fosters inclusivity, promotes
bipartisan decision-making, and ultimately leads to better outcomes
for citizens.
While local councillors have largely been very successful at working
together in recent years (even if they do take the opportunity now and
then to attack each other in public!), the need to be collegiate has
become even more important following the local elections in May. Since
the 1970s, there has been a party “in control” at Lichfield District Council
– i.e, more than 50% of Councillors were all in the same party, so getting
votes passed was just a matter of making sure everyone turned
Rotary Welcomes
New Members
In April, the Club president welcomed two new
members into Lichfield Rotary Club which
meets weekly at lunch time in the Dog Inn,
Whittington.Celebrating the occasion was
Chris Parry who was a very active member of
Bewdley Rotary Club for three years prior to
moving to Whittington; Elizabeth Wall, the club’s
president (pictured centre), and Patrick Walsh
(right) who has been a member of Rotary at
Rugby lunch club for some 14 years before
departing to Lichfield recently and now lives in
Fradley. For membership enquiries contact
membership secretary, John Cole, on 07366
up to vote. From May 2023, however, no single party has the luxury
of being in this position – so all votes are now likely to require
cross-party support to pass.
Given this new world we’re in, I thought I’d pen some ideas as to
how we might achieve success in the coming months and years –
and you will be able to be the judge of how well we do!
Communication: Effective collaboration requires transparent and
open communication between political leaders and the public. We
must engage in regular communication, provide updates on collaborative
efforts, and actively seek public input to demonstrate our commitment to
inclusive decision-making.
Collegiality: If we can build a true sense of collegiality across different
political affiliation, it will stand us in good stead for challenges which will
undoubtedly arise over the coming months. Collegiality cultivates trust,
constructive dialogue, and relationship-building; enhances problemsolving
and collaboration skills and enables us to find common ground.
Commitment: Not everything will be easy – there will be areas where
it will take some time to find an acceptable way forward, there may be
unexpected events that arise that will challenge us all - but I believe that
by remaining committed to our residents, and to working together, we
will be able to deal with those obstacles.
I very much hope that you see us working together in spirit of
collegiality over the coming years as we continue to strive to serve, and
improve, our local area.

Greyhounds Join
the Celebrations!
By Lauren Hirst
Charles III has now been crowned King of the UK and what a
spectacular event. To mark the Coronation thousands of
organisations across the country joined in the Big Help Out to “join
in, help out, and make a change.” For several years now we have
been able to showcase the work of the Trust by contributing to
Citylife, so we were pleased to welcome the Editor, Kristen
Lackajis, and her friend Chrissie on Coronation Bank Holiday
Monday as part of the Big Help Out.
Krissy and Chrissie met several of our volunteers who give up their
time day-in-and-day-out, 52 weeks of the year to help the hounds in our
care make the transition from racing dog to family pet and find loving
homes for them. And of course, they met the hounds. I think it’s safe to
say that they enjoyed their visit learning about greyhounds, the work of
the Trust, and best of all, the hands-on time with the hounds, walking,
grooming, playing etc.
They particularly fell for the two little sisters, Mae and Penny and who
wouldn’t? Two peas in a pod they are simply adorable and it would be
fantastic to be able to find homes for them together. We know it’s a tall
order with the cost-of-living crisis, but it would be a shame to split them
up now. If you are looking for a ready pair of hounds, look no further, and
get in touch.
Following on from the Coronation weekend, we had our own special
event, the Watford Gap Kennels Open Day on May 13th. What a great
success it was too with a dog show, a variety of stall, an amazing donated
cake to raffle, and a parade of homeless hounds who strutted their stuff
to meet the public. We’re pleased to say that Trooper found his forever
family as a result. An astonishing £2,000 was raised on the day, and given
that we are virtually a self-funding branch of the national Greyhound
Trust, is much needed and appreciated. There will be another Open Day
in September so watch our Facebook page and website for details.
Your Garden in June
By Byron Lewis
Is it safe to plant now we’re in June? The month of May was a real
mixed bag of weather, with some lovely days followed by torrential
showers and cold winds. Hopefully not too many of you were
tempted to plant your tender flowers and vegetables out too
early… things should improve this month and we’ll look forward to
a lovely summer ahead.
June is the time to really get the planting started – whether it’s
summer patio plants or a new cottage garden border, the garden
centre is full of fresh new plants.
Summer Patio Plants
This group includes all the favourites like busy Lizzie (impatiens),
begonia and fuchsia – these three in particular are ideal for shadier
spots, with sun loving marigolds, petunias and lobelia finishing off the
displays. It’s not too late to sow hardy annual seeds too – if you have
a bare border to fill, sowing a packet of mixed annuals will reap
rewards for very little effort.
Cottage Garden Perennials
Lots of these popular plants will flower through the summer months
and generally need a little less looking after compared to some
bedding plants. Look out for plants like verbena bonariensis with tall
stems of purple flowers. Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum) are also
typical border plants with large white or pale yellow daisy like
flowers which last for weeks at a time. Agapanthus also flower in the
summer, along with rudbeckia - try these together for a combination
of blue/purple and yellow. Removing dead flower heads on all these
plants will encourage further flowering into the autumn.
As we always say to our customers – remember to feed your plants
regularly. For many summer plants, a weekly or fortnightly feed of a
liquid fertiliser like Miracle Grow or Phostrogen will give great
results. Why not try tomato food on your bedding plants this year?
This is high in potash, which helps to stimulate flower buds. Use this
alternately with the general feed for a great show – you’ll see the
difference!
Longer lasting perennial plants would benefit from slow-release
fertiliser pellets – these are sprinkled around the base of your plants
and release food over a period of months, giving an on-going food
supply. If you’ve got acid loving plants like rhododendrons and
azaleas, you can also get ericaceous slow-release pellets too.
Finally, this season you may find some plants are unavailable or will
be later than usual. This can most likely be put down to the poor
start we’ve had to the year… it’s always worth having one or two
alternative plants in mind, just in case!!
Being Queen
Elizabeth I
By Lesley Smith,
Curator of Tutbury Castle
Soon the streets of Lichfield will
be filled with enthusiastic
volunteers in Lichfield Festival
t-shirts, pressing us to take a
programme for this year’s event.
They are worth having, although I
have taken to visibly carrying one
or I will be offered eight in about
half an hour! One glance through
reveals some of the biggest names
in the arts, as opera singers rub
shoulders with orchestras, dancers,
comedians and actors. It is
marvellous, and a glimpse at the
line-up explains why it is one of the
most important arts festivals in
Britain.
I will be appearing as Queen
Elizabeth I on 14th July at The Hub at St Mary’s at 2pm. It happens to be
Bastille Day, when Republicans of France celebrate the releasing of
prisoners held by the wicked aristocracy. I consider myself fortunate to
be part of this and, although I appear at six other festivals, the jewel in
the crown is Lichfield, so I hope readers will come and see Her Majesty
and discover why she was able to scare “large men and small animals!”
Being a queen has been challenging this year as the costume weighs
over four stone, including gown, jewellery and wig – a bit like dragging a
nine-year-old round on your shoulders. As it’s Coronation year, this
character has been by far the most popular, with an average of five
appearances a week, from Yorkshire to Truro. I can’t work out why I am
not a size 10 with that almost daily workout but, over the years, I’ve got
more used to it. The reaction of people when they see me ranges from
abject fear to pleasure, and I have had men overwhelmed enough to
curtsey instead of bowing. Some even have the audacity to ask me if I’m
really a virgin to which I ask in a loud voice if they are about to change
history! That soon shuts them up!
Studying to be Elizabeth is a non-stop demand. I’m in an almost
constant state of research, as new findings from the world of academia
add/correct previously held ideas. The new coded letters from Mary
Queen of Scots found recently have changed our view on several issues
relating to this tragic queen and, by association, Queen Elizabeth too. It
all keeps the pot boiling as we pick through evidence from sources that
have to be constantly tested. Professional historians have to be able to
let go of an idea even if it goes against all they once believed. New
evidence can enhance or destroy - a fascinating process.
As I look over the castle grounds, I know this year will go down in
history. We were all part of it - from street parties to crowding round
the TV mesmerised. Of course, there are republicans out there who do
not share the same enthusiasm, but as I look out the window at the ruin
outside and the results of Britain's last experiment in republicanism, I
can't say that I think it sets a happy precedent. But that's another story...
Daisy and Joseph - Mayor
and Sheriff of Lichfield 1927
By Jono Oates
On Monday 15 May 2023 the new Mayor and Sheriff of Lichfield were appointed at
a meeting of Lichfield City Council in the Lichfield Guildhall, and they started
their new term of office. Councillor Ann Hughes was appointed as Mayor, and
Adam Burns-Mace took up his role as the Sheriff of Lichfield. In 1927 the respective roles
were taken up by two very well-known Lichfield personalities of their day – Daisy Stuart
Shaw and Joseph Henry Bridgeman.
Daisy was the wife of Thomas David Stuart Shaw, a GP, who had moved to Lichfield from
Gloucester, and they lived at the Red House, 8 Bore Street, which is the building next to the
former Feria Bar.
In February 1918, a few months before the Great War came to an end, the Government passed
the Representation of the People’s Act 1918 which gave women the vote for the first time. This
then allowed women to take part in elections for the first time, and, in November 1919 Daisy
Stuart Shaw became the first ever female councillor at Lichfield City Council, representing the
South Ward. Daisy remained as a councillor for over 20 years and took a particular interest in
the rights of women, particularly those who were widowed or were on low income, the welfare
of children, and on housing reform.
Daisy became the first female Mayor of Lichfield in 1927 and took part in the official reopening
of the Clock Tower on The Friary in 1928, after it had been moved from its original
position on the junction of Bird Street, Bore Street and St John Street.
In 1938, in recognition of her long service, and dedication to Lichfield City Council, and for
her tireless voluntary work in and around the city, Daisy was made the first female alderman of
Lichfield. An alderman was an ancient title and was conferred upon a senior member of the
council which was voted for, and appointed by, other elected members.
After spending nearly forty years in Lichfield the Stuart Shaw’s decided to retire in 1945 and
they moved away from their adopted city.
The Sheriff of Lichfield in 1927, Joseph Bridgeman, had also been born outside of Lichfield city.
He had moved to Lichfield when his father, noted stonemason and woodcarver Robert
Bridgeman moved from Cambridgeshire to Lichfield to work on the renovation of Lichfield
Cathedral in the 1880s. His father employed a large number of stonemasons to work on the
many statues that now adorn the West Front of the cathedral, and their workshops were on
Quonians Lane, off Dam Street. Robert Bridgeman had himself been Sheriff, in 1907, and had also
been Mayor twice, in 1913 and 1914, a feat that Joseph had also achieved, in 1922 and 1923.
In August 1908, as he finished his term as Sheriff of Lichfield, Robert Bridgeman announced
that he would be stepping back from running the company and would hand over the reins to his
two sons, Ernest and Joseph, and the firm was renamed as Bridgeman and Sons.
Joseph was elected to the Council a year before Daisy, in 1918, and as well as being a Mayor
and Sheriff he, like Daisy, also became an alderman of the city, a title he retained until 1947, when
he retired. As well as being a member of the council he took a leading role in supporting many
organisations within Lichfield. He was the president of the Lichfield Chamber of Trade for 12
years, a trustee of both Dr Milley’s Hospital and the Conduit Lands Trust and was a governor of
King Edward VI school, and the Friary High School for Girls.
In November 1916 tragedy struck when Joseph, and his wife Sarah Ann, learned of the death
of their eldest son, Robert George, killed in action in France during World War One, aged just
24. When Bridgeman and Sons were commissioned to provide the War Memorial in the Garden
of Remembrance, opened in October 1920, Joseph would have been in charge of the project,
knowing that the name of his own son was one of the 209 names listed – one can only imagine
what his thoughts would have been at that time. He also presented the two lion statues, that
stand on the gates of the Gardens, as a lasting legacy to the Fallen of Lichfield.
When Joseph passed away, in February 1951, at the grand old age of 80, his generosity to the
people, and city, of Lichfield was recognised, in exactly the same way as it had been for Daisy in
1945. Daisy and Joseph – truly a golden combination of Mayor and Sheriff of Lichfield.
Let There Be Light!
Fancy treating yourself to a relaxing facial massage followed by the
medically approved Dermalux Phototherapy? So did we! We sent
Helen Smith off to get the full treatment and she enjoyed it that
much, she went again… and again!
Let me introduce you to Charlene from The Beauty Sanctuary, based
in Tamworth. She will help you to relax and unwind and feel cared for
from the moment you step through the door. It’s so much more than just
a beauty treatment, it’s an entire experience!
I opted for the luxury facial (approximately 60 - 75 mins) followed by
Dermalux Flex Phototherapy (30 mins). Charlene talked me through
both treatments and discussed what I wanted to gain from them, she
explained all the products she uses from Tropic range that are used
throughout the facial and then what LED lights will work better for my
wrinkles – it’s red and yellow in case you want the same!
Once all was explained I lay on the heated bed, my hair off my face and
shoulders exposed, ready for some ‘me time’ with relaxing music playing
– BOOM! I’m in the zone!
What my Luxury Facial included:
First off - cleanser using green tea extract,
golden jojoba and macadamia oils. Just by the
sound of it you know these products are going
to smell wonderful and make your skin feel
amazing.
Next was exfoliation followed by steaming.
After a few minutes of steaming my facial
began. Elemis massage techniques are used to
help relax the facial muscles as well was using
lymphatic drainage techniques to detoxify the
skin to leave it full of vitality. Charlene also
massaged my neck and shoulders to help
relieve tension. After a wonder massage she
finishes it off with ice globes from the
Fraicheur Paris brand.
My face is then ready for a deep hydration
mask, which was soothing and cool and, again,
the smell was beautiful (wild Australian
superberries and resurrection flower extract
this time). Whilst the mask was setting I had a
wonderful hand massage and, once the mask
was removed it was followed by hot towels and a hydration toner.
The three lights target different skin issues (for example, the red light
works for rejuvenation and healing). It’s powerful for anti-aging and has
an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin too. It reduces fine lines and
wrinkles meaning skin looks firmer and it also evens out the tone whilst
hydrating, smoothing irritation and redness, shrinking open and enlarged
pores, increasing circulation and accelerating the healing process.
LED Blue light is great for acne and
problem skin. It’s clinically proven to destroy
bacteria and improve skin clarity. The calming
effect of the Blue wavelength also helps to
reduce redness, inflammation, taking you a
step closer to your clearest skin. It helps
prevent breakouts, normalises oil production,
and is UV-free for the treatment of eczema,
psoriasis and dermatitis.
LED Near Infrared is the most deeply
absorbed wavelength by the skin and works
synergistically with red light to achieve
optimum rejuvenation and repair.
Dermalux is 100% safe - it does not use
heat or chemicals, and the lights do not
contain UV wavelengths. It is one of the safest
ways to treat all skin types.
So can I see a difference following my treatment? Yes I can! I’ve had 12
treatments now and my skin looks amazing, with some of my deep lines
having gone completely and my skin tone being more even. It’s my new
favourite treatment and I’ve even used it on my bad shoulder and knee
to help with an injury, and I must admit the pain has almost gone!
The Beauty Sanctuary offers Luxury Facials, Reiki Healing,
Dermalux Phototherapy, Bio Sculpture Gel Nails, and Lash Lifts
and Tints. Contact The Beauty Sanctuary in Tamworth on 07886
416917 or follow on social media @thebeautysanctuarytamworth.
Next came the hydration serum - rainforest dew, followed by a
nutrient boost oil serum of super greens, including vitamin C, tamanu,
kale and broccoli seed oils.
22
Then to finish off a fantastic moisturiser to hold all that goodness in!
As if this wasn’t enough, I thought I’d try the Dermalux light therapy to
help target those lines and wrinkles! I’d heard great things about these so
was excited to see if they actually worked. Just 40 minutes total
treatment time is all you need and it is recommended that 12 treatments
are taken. So, what is it I hear you ask? Well, it’s the number one name
for LED phototherapy and is medically certified, clinically proven and
backed by science.

This group of three brooches by Askel
Holmsen sold at £110.
Scandinavian enamel jewellery is my favourite due to
the bright, bold colours.
The technique used is guilloche enamel – this is enamel
on top of an engine turned pattern in the metal beneath.
Scandinavian jewellery is a valuer’s and collector’s
dream because the majority have maker's marks and assay
marks, so you can look up all that information fairly easily,
which is always a bonus.
There are certain maker's marks that you come to
recognise as they show up regularly, including Ivar T.
Holth, David Andersen, Anton Michelson, Askel Holmsen,
Hroar Prydz and Oystein Balle.
The most well-known is of course Georg Jensen, so
prices on this jewellery are at a premium.
Jensen's early designs were dominated by nature
motives which became more stylised and simplified later
on.
Jensen took on gifted silver designers and gave them
free reign, nurturing over 90 craftspeople throughout his
working life, such as Henning Koppel who designed
jewellery and silverware and Vivianna Torun Buelow-
Huebe, whose Eternity range of jewellery is easily
recognisable.
Richard Winterton Auctioneers offers jewellery
appraisals, insurance valuations and probate advice by
Bloody Lichfield
The Gallows at the Crossroads
By Jono Oates
In the winter of 1651 George Fox, founder of the Society of
Friends, or Quakers, strode through the streets of Lichfield
crying out ‘Woe to the Bloody City of Lichfield’, after he had a
vision of the streets running with blood as he approached the city
gates.
One of the bloodiest locations was at the Lichfield Gallows, situated
at the cross roads of St John Street, Tamworth Road, London Road and
Shortbutts Lane (where the Shell Garage is now). Gallows were often
erected on crossroads and there are several possible explanations for
this, one of the most popular being that the gallows would act as a
warning beacon to others, that this might happen to them if they broke
the law too – welcome to Lichfield!
Gallows were a wooden structure, with two upright posts connected
by a crosspiece, from which the hanging rope would be attached.
Gallows were used in Britain from as early as the 5th century, and the
last two people to be executed by hanging took place in August 1964,
just before Capital Punishment was abolished in the UK.
Although executions were definitely not commonplace in Lichfield,
between 1735 and 1799 15 death sentences were issued leading to six
executions (the others received an official pardon post-sentencing).
Prisoners were held in the Lichfield Gaol, now the Prison Cells in the
Guildhall building on Bore Street, before being taken in a horse and cart
to their final destination at the gallows. The death sentence was often
issued for major crimes such as murder, as was the case with Henry
Murral in May 1738 for the murder of Edward Cheney, but also for
minor crimes, such as John Jones in August 1735, who was a pickpocket,
and Joseph Yates in August 1776 for the crime of forgery. In
September 1782 William Davis was hung at the gallows, found guilty of
stealing a horse from John Silvester, who was a butcher from Lichfield.
Davis was a an ‘old lag’, a multiple offender and who had been
sentenced to death at the Old Bailey a few years earlier, but had
received a Royal pardon after agreeing to be transported abroad for life
- although he had obviously escaped and returned to England! As
William stood in the cart waiting for the executioner to despatch him,
he hurled himself off the edge of the cart with such force that he
snapped the hanging rope and fell, unharmed, to the ground! His
‘freedom’ was short-lived though as another rope was found, and he
was not so fortunate the second time around, although the enforced
delay did give him the opportunity to turn to the large crowd and cry
out ‘This is indeed murder…’.
Several of the executions at the start of the 19th century were for
the act of forgery, known at that time as the crime of ‘uttering’. In April
1801 Ralph Greenfield, who had a wife and six children, Thomas Nailor
aged 31 and William Chetland, 46, were all executed at the gallows for
the crime of forgery. The three men all showed contrition while
awaiting their grisly demise, and were visited daily in the gaol by a
clergyman, when they each professed ‘a humbling hope of the pardoning
mercy of God through the blood of Christ’.
The last three men to be hung at the Lichfield Gallows followed a few
years later, in 1810. William Weightman, aged 26, who owned a draper’s
shop in Birmingham, his assistant John Neve, 25, and another multiple
Gallows Wharf at the Lichfield
and Hatherton Canal
offender James Jackson,
aged 39, were all
sentenced for the crime
of forgery. Unlike
Jackson, Neve and
Weightman were first
time offenders, and from
good families, but
despite this they were all
sentenced to death.
A large crowd
attended this gruesome
event, and an eyewitness
said that they
arrived in droves on foot,
on horseback or in
carriages and that they
all drank ale and wine,
laughed out loud and
chatted to their friends
as though they were at a
garden party. After they
had been executed the
Memorial of Neve, Weightman and
Jackson, St Michael's Churchyard
1765 map of Lichfield showing
Gallows location
bodies were transported in the cart to St Michael’s churchyard on
Greenhill, where all three bodies were placed in to the same, unmarked
grave. A stone tablet at the side of the church lists the initials of the
three men and their date of execution.
Today there is no sign of where the gallows once stood, but the
nearby bridge across the former Lichfield and Hatherton Canal, now
being restored, bears the name Gallows Wharf, a stark reminder of
Lichfield’s bloody past.
New ‘Tableau’ for Tucklesholme
By Marie Smith
Tucklesholme is a former
gravel pit being restored by
Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to a
wetland habitat. It will provide a
nesting ground for key bird
species that thrive in an open
wetland environment. In 2021
Transforming the Trent Valley’s
Wildchild Officer, Kathryn
Kavanagh, began developing an
Andrew Frost working on sculpture
area within the reserve for
families, but found that the open environment favoured by the birds was not ideal
for hosting children’s activities. The Transforming the Trent Valley project team
therefore called on local artists to design a sculptural screen that could provide
some shelter from the elements to enable a more welcoming space for families to
enjoy nature-based arts and crafts.
Derbyshire-based Andrew Frost, a tree and wood sculptor, was chosen after a
competitive tender process. Andrew’s workshop is situated in Crich Tramway Village,
where he adds to the growing collection of sculpture along their woodland trail. Andrew
originally trained in Fine Art before working as a Countryside Ranger and Forester,
eventually combining his skillset to create wood sculptures using chainsaws.
Consisting of ten cedar panels, the screen at Tucklesholme features a variety of birds
that visitors will recognise around the reserve, including lapwing, reed bunting and an
oyster catcher. ‘Hollows’ have been ingeniously incorporated into the relief logs, which
can be used as bug hotels or viewing holes. Spanning about 5m and set to a staggered
line, the screen will be a great enhancement to the reserve. Hints of colour will be added
to the screen to help distinguish the birds from one another.
Installation of the sculpture is due to take place later this year.
The Newsletter of Lichfield City Council - June 2023
Councillor Dave Robertson Leader of the Council
Welcome to this issue of City View
It is a real pleasure to be writing this article, my first
as the Leader of Lichfield City Council.
Every four years the people of Lichfield get their
chance to have their say about who runs their
Council and the priorities it sets, but this year really
wrung in the changes as 15 new faces were elected
across the City, bringing with it a change of direction
as the Labour Party took control for the first time this
century. Whilst I am excited to work with everyone on
the Council, both new and returning, I would like to
take this chance to thank all those who are leaving
the Lichfield City Council this May, for their service to
our City. Special thanks too should go to the outgoing
Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Sheriff for their
commitment over the last twelve months.
The traditions of this ancient City wait for no one, and
the Annual Meeting of the Council meeting came on
15th May where we saw the election of a new civic
team who I am sure will have a wonderful year
meeting the very many people around Lichfield who
are doing amazing things on behalf of their friends,
families, and neighbours.
Looking ahead there is a huge amount on the
Council’s to-do list, including some much-needed
repairs at one of our community buildings,
preparations to mark the tradition of the Sheriff’s Ride
with visits to landowners ,followed by a banquet in
the Guildhall. In addition, there will be the Samuel
Johnson Birthday celebrations, which return this year
after being cancelled in 2023 as a mark of respect
following the passing of Her Late Majesty and of
course continuing to look after 65 acres of open
space, several markets, the Guildhall and Samuel
Johnson Birthplace museum. Change is coming to
the City too though, with a new committee being set
up to deal with grants and infrastructure that should
make sure that our Council is on hand to help good
causes whenever it can.
The City Council is one of the larger Councils of its
type and it was an honour to present the annual
report summarising the work of the Council over the
past year to the Annual Town Meeting on 24th May.
This report gives a clear overview of the work of the
City Council and our hard-working staff. Copies are
available from the City Council’s offices or can be
downloaded from our website. www.lichfield.gov.uk
Currying
Favour!
By Kristen Lackajis
B
eing a bit of a curry fan, I was delighted to be invited to Lal Bagh on Bird Street in Lichfield
to sample just a taster of their extensive menu. Equally eager was my guest, Helen, and we
took our seats with anticipation, ordered a glass of wine, nibbled on poppadoms with all the
usual accompaniments, and enjoyed the aromatic smells and sounds emanating from the
kitchen.
Despite both of us having favourite dishes, we were keen to try something completely different and
therefore left our choices in the capable hands of the restaurant owner, who recommended two dishes
that were completely different from each other, yet equally as delicious.
The first was Karishma – a medium strength dish consisting of a chicken breast stuffed with egg, along
with tiger king prawns marinated in lime juice with homemade spices, green peppers and coriander.
Not only did this dish look incredible, but tasted spectacular too! The biggest prawns I had ever laid
eyes on were succulent and juicy, perfectly complemented by the relatively dry sauce. And who knew
chicken breast stuffed with egg was so amazing?!
Secondly, we were recommended to try Chicken Tarka – a dish so flavoursome that we both
declared it our favourite of the evening! Chicken breast strips cooked with spring onions, baby carrots,
baby corn and green peppers was served on a sizzling tawa in a garlic sauce. I don’t think the word
‘mouthwatering’ does this dish the justice it really deserves and, if you’re looking for something a little
different to your usual, it’s definitely one to order.
With pilau rice and a garlic and cheese naan bread too, we were certainly full, and most definitely
incredible satisfied with our meal, served by friendly staff in a traditional restaurant setting, and don’t
be afraid to ask for recommendations because this restaurant REALLY delivers!!
Five Minutes With…
Cathy Fellows
Cathy Fellows is the Co-Director of
Lichfield Fuse Festival, running from 7th-
9th July. We caught up with Cathy to
learn more about this free event for all
the family.
• To begin with, could you tell us a
little bit about yourself and what it is
you do?
I’m a creative producer based in Lichfield, I work on lots of different
projects locally and nationally. A creative producer brings together
artistic talent, resources, and logistics to transform creative ideas into
reality. Our key role is to bring an artistic vision to life, enabling the artists
to entertain audiences with their creative brilliance.
• How did you get into the industry? Has music always
been a passion of yours?
I studied English & Media Studies at University and was always involved
in performing arts when I was younger. When I left University, I initially
worked in IT, but I always kept some space for creative projects, and they
ended up taking over. I’ve been producing for over ten years now and I’ve
been fortunate to work with some amazing people who share similar
values around making quality creative experiences accessible for all,
something I’m totally passionate about.
• What motivates you?
Producing work that is accessible and inclusive to everybody. Making
sure that everybody regardless of their background and
ability has access to high quality and engaging creative
experiences. Thought provoking art, in all forms, that can
promote or grow the cultural sector, inspires me. The
Imaginarium area at the Lichfield Arts Fuse festival will be
exactly this! A space where everyone is welcome, with
free activities from our amazing partners. Whether that
will be enjoying the grass roots talent featured by Midlands Open Mic,
playing in the children’s Nature Playzone with Nurture Community CIC,
decorating bucket hats with Fun Club Hub CIO or getting involved in an
art project with emerging local artist Megan Morgan, there’ll be lots of
free and accessible things to have a go at and experience.
• How important do you feel that music as an art form
is to society?
It gives everybody the opportunity to get involved and inspired! It is so
important that there are opportunities for emerging talent to grow, learn
and develop their skills. This is what Lichfield Arts aims to provide, a safe
space that enables artists to learn, develop and grow within a fun and
professional environment.
• And finally, what does the Fuse Festival mean to you?
Fuse is hugely important to me. I am incredibly passionate about it!
Over the years I’ve shared lots of great times with friends and family
there, as I know many people have over the twenty plus years it has been
running. Professionally I know the very small team work so so hard to
deliver it in very challenging times. It’s a rare gem! There really aren’t
many free professional music festivals on this scale. This year I’m looking
forward to being with our amazingly talented team, all our partners old
and new and our incredible volunteers, as we deliver all our plans. There’s
going to be so much going on for people to enjoy and I can’t wait to see
our visitors enjoying themselves.
‘Make Up’ Review By Cheryl Turner
I
’ll be honest with you. I had no idea what to expect from Make
Up, and seeing the stage set with a table and an almost-empty
clothes rail didn’t give much away either. Waiting for the show to
begin we were treated to some classics with songs from the likes
of Christina Aguilera, Mariah, and Queen – all divas in their own
right. And then, the lights dimmed….
Enter Lady Christina, coming off stage after a show in Wolverhampton
to rapturous applause and cries for more. Once the applause died down,
Christina takes a seat at the table, centre stage, to begin her
transformation back to Christopher Laneghan, the son of Irishman
Michael and Black Country lass Joan.
As Christina starts to remove the layers of her costume – wig first,
closely followed by the cheap plastic shoes, the dangly earrings, and
statement piece pound-shop necklace, she lets us into her thoughts. The
years of performing on the drag circuit have made her bitter in many
ways, yet the humour is more than a nod to the likes of Danny La Rue,
and Paul O’Grady’s Lily Savage with its viper-sharp bite.
It's when the make-up starts to come off that we get to dive deeper
in Lady Christina/Christopher’s past, and introduced to new characters
(via Christopher), his parents.
Make Up is only a short piece, lasting around 55 minutes in total, and
is delivered as a monologue by the brilliant Moj Taylor. Watching the play
is an emotional endeavour: intimidated at first by Lady Christina, then
taken on a journey which embraced humour, empathy, revulsion, and
sadness. You could have heard a pin drop throughout most of the
mesmerising performance.
Friday 12th May - Lichfield Garrick Theatre
The writer, Andy Moseley, and Moj Taylor & Andy Moseley
actor Moj returned to the stage
after the performance for a Q&A
with the audience. It was an
intimate gathering, giving us an
insight as to how the play came to
life, and how it has evolved over the
last three years. There were
suggestions from audience
members on how it could develop
– although actor Moj wasn’t too
keen at the prosect of any more
lines to learn!
Would I recommend Make Up?
Absolutely! I was drawn into Lady
Christina’s world from her first
entrance. Does it need more
actors? In my opinion, no. The
language used by writer Andy paints perfect pictures in the mind of the
viewer, reflecting the emotional outpourings as Christopher stares back
at his father’s face in his dressing table mirror.
Morphing back into Christopher, peeling the layers of himself back like
an onion, I found myself rooting for Christopher to stand up for what he
wants to be. Himself.
