LOCAL NEWS Cathedral Awarded Funding Works to restore the badly damaged central spire at Lichfield Cathedral have begun thanks to funding received from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The 12 month project totalling almost £1m aims to restore the structure, reopen the space to visitors, and explore what the iconic landmark means to its local residents. Originally built in the 1300s and almost completely destroyed during the English Civil War, the iconic central spire of Lichfield Cathedral has been rebuilt and restored across the centuries. This funding gives Lichfield Cathedral a unique opportunity to explore why people have been moved to keep the spire standing, why it has always been so important to the community and what it means to people today. In addition to the grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, significant funds have also been pledged by the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Wolfson Foundation, HS2 Community and Environment Fund, and the Headley Trust, along with many other grants and donations generously contributed by hundreds of donors. Working Together Whether it’s negotiating international treaties, or deciding on where to place a litterbin, good governance and successfully implementing policies hinge upon the ability of political leaders to work together. The willingness to work well together, or even to “disagree agreeably” is as crucial locally as it is nationally - it fosters inclusivity, promotes bipartisan decision-making, and ultimately leads to better outcomes for citizens. While local councillors have largely been very successful at working together in recent years (even if they do take the opportunity now and then to attack each other in public!), the need to be collegiate has become even more important following the local elections in May. Since the 1970s, there has been a party “in control” at Lichfield District Council – i.e, more than 50% of Councillors were all in the same party, so getting votes passed was just a matter of making sure everyone turned 6 Councils Help Local Group A gardening initiative in Burntwood has been boosted by funding from local councils. Cherry Orchard Gardening Services (COGS) offers work opportunities for people with learning disabilities who provide affordable gardening provision for elderly, vulnerable and disabled residents. The group has received funding from Burntwood Town Council through the Better Burntwood fund, and Hammerwich Parish Council, to help it continue operating without increasing charges. New Café Bar in Streethay A brand-new café bar will be opening its doors to coffee and beer lovers in Lichfield this summer, a Staffordshire based brewery By Doug Pullen, Leader of Lichfield District Council has announced. Located just off Yoxall Way, Streethay, this will be the eighth bod Café Bar managed by Titanic Brewery, and their first venue to open in Lichfield. Launched in March 2018, the bod Café Bar concept brings together the best of cafés and micropubs in one space, offering customers everything from coffee and cake to craft beers and wines. It will be open from morning until late, providing the local community with a place to meet and socialise, be it for breakfast, an afterwork drink, or something in between. As with all bods, sustainability is a key focus, which is why many of the products and ingredients will be sourced locally from Staffordshire. Customers also get a 50p discount on hot drinks if they bring their own reusable cup. bod Lichfield will open in July and create 30 new jobs. Rotary Welcomes New Members In April, the Club president welcomed two new members into Lichfield Rotary Club which meets weekly at lunch time in the Dog Inn, Whittington.Celebrating the occasion was Chris Parry who was a very active member of Bewdley Rotary Club for three years prior to moving to Whittington; Elizabeth Wall, the club’s president (pictured centre), and Patrick Walsh (right) who has been a member of Rotary at Rugby lunch club for some 14 years before departing to Lichfield recently and now lives in Fradley. From May 2023, however, no single party has the luxury of being in this position – so all votes are now likely to require cross-party support to pass. Given this new world we’re in, I thought I’d pen some ideas as to how we might achieve success in the coming months and years – and you will be able to be the judge of how well we do! Communication: Effective collaboration requires transparent and open communication between political leaders and the public. We must engage in regular communication, provide updates on collaborative efforts, and actively seek public input to demonstrate our commitment to inclusive decision-making. Collegiality: If we can build a true sense of collegiality across different political affiliation, it will stand us in good stead for challenges which will undoubtedly arise over the coming months. Collegiality cultivates trust, constructive dialogue, and relationship-building; enhances problemsolving and collaboration skills and enables us to find common ground. Commitment: Not everything will be easy – there will be areas where it will take some time to find an acceptable way forward, there may be unexpected events that arise that will challenge us all - but I believe that by remaining committed to our residents, and to working together, we will be able to deal with those obstacles. I very much hope that you see us working together in spirit of collegiality over the coming years as we continue to strive to serve, and improve, our local area.
