Tastes of the Season
By Simon Smith
Summers Puds!
Sadly, the BBQ season so far has been a
washout so last month’s recipes probably
didn’t apply. You have to feel for those in
Europe and beyond suffering incredible
temperatures, fires and drought.
This can only have an adverse effect on food
prices shortly as we import a lot of food and
there are bound to price rises for fruit and veg
and salad items. Along with the price rise of
wheat because of the war in Ukraine I think
we are in for a bumpy ride with food prices yet again.
Fortunately, at this time of year there is a wealth of wonderful British
produce to be had and as we have had enough rain to keep everything
succulent the flavour will be fabulous. English strawberries are at their
finest at the moment and you fancy doing something with the kids now
the school holidays are upon us it’s always nice to stop off at a ‘pick your
own’ farm and gather a punnet or two to get some fresh air and satisfy
the hunter/gatherer in us all.
For the gardeners amongst us it’s always a question of trying to beat the
birds to the berries but a few years ago I planted some wild strawberries
and they are now rife around the garden and have spread everywhere.
Fortunately the birds don’t seem to like them! The flavour is quite
different from cultivated varieties and are much prized by the French.
They are a lot smaller so you would probably not want to be making jam
with them but rather use them in a tart with some whipped cream
flavoured with vanilla, sugar and for another kick some Chambord liqueur
which is raspberry based and one of my favourites in a berry sweet.
Another prolific plant at this time of year is borage which is traditionally
used in Pimms as a garnish but makes a lovely decoration on any dish. The
plant stands about 3ft high and produces an abundance of flowers which
both look nice and are edible. Herbs are growing really well at the
moment and would benefit from a trim to stop them going to seed. You
will probably have more than you need at the moment so take the excess,
chop them up and put into an ice cube tray. Cover with water and freeze
so you can use in the winter. Just drop the herb ice cube in a sauce at the
last minute and the herbs will stay green.
There is a growing food trend at the moment for tapas or meze style
eating which I personally really enjoy, especially outside at this time of
year. I always find it hard when I have friends coming round to decide on
one dish to give them and really enjoy doing several little tasting dishes.
It makes the occasion much less formal and takes the pressure off doing
the traditional three course meal. I do a mixture of hot and cold but
always seasonal and preferably local where possible.
Elizabethan Strawberry
Tart
Serves 4
1 x punnet strawberries
Caster sugar
Cinnamon
Short pastry
1lb plain flour
8ozs chopped butter
1 x egg
2ozs water
Method
Put the flour and butter in a food processor and whizz briefly until dry
mixed. Mix the egg and water, add to the flour and butter and whizz until
pastry is formed. You will have more pastry than you need but can freeze
the rest for next time.
Roll the pastry out into a sheet, take the tops off the strawberries, cut in
half and place on the pastry. Mix the sugar and cinnamon 50/50 and
sprinkle on the strawberries. Add another sheet of pastry on top and
sprinkle once more with the cinnamon sugar. Bake in a preheated oven at
180°C for 15-20 minutes. Think ‘Pop Tarts’ when you try to visualise or
look at the photo. Eat either warm or cold.
Eton Mess
Serves 4
1 x punnet strawberries
4 x meringue nests
1pt double cream
2ozs caster sugar
1 x vanilla pod
2 x shots Chambord
Method
Take the tops off the
strawberries and cut into
quarters. Whip the double
cream to stiff peak with the
sugar, vanilla seeds and add
the Chambord. Crush the
meringue nests and fold in
along with the strawberries.
Put into a large bowl and
decorate with the borage flowers.
I am still available to cater for dinner parties,
barbecues buffets and corporate catering and can be
reached on simonsmith57@icloud.com. Alternatively,
visit www.simonsmith-chef.com for further
information.
Inevitably the recipe this month will feature berries after all my chat
about them. The first will be an Elizabethan strawberry tart from my book
‘Simmering Through the Ages’ which is really easy for the kids to make.

The former Mayor and Sheriff would like to offer their sincere thanks to all
the local businesses, groups and individuals who supported their fundraising
activities and for their wonderful generosity towards these two worthy causes.
Well, we’re over the halfway hump now and hopefully enjoying
the midsummer weather… meanwhile here at the garden
centre we’re already heading into autumn mode! Some autumn
patio plants such as violas, pansies and chrysanthemums are
now available – these will continue into September and
beyond, but if your baskets and pots are starting to look a little
jaded, why not replant ready for the months ahead.
Potty for Potatoes?
While we’re on the subject of autumn, now is the time to get
potatoes planted in time for a late crop that could be ready for
harvesting in November or even at Christmas! A range of
popular varieties are now in stock – simply plant these into
half-full large pots of compost. As the plants grow, keep adding
compost to these pots (as you would if they were growing on
the allotment). Then, once the pot is topped up full with
compost, simply keep them watered. When the foliage begins
to die back (usually around 12-16 weeks after planting), you
can start to harvest a lovely crop of new potatoes!
Cottage Garden Perennials
These are still giving colour and interest through August.
Perennial plants generally need a little less looking after
compared to some bedding plants. Look out for plants like
echinacea which come in a range of bright colours and are
great for attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial
insects. Shasta daisies (leucanthemum) are also typical border
plants with large white or pale yellow daisy like flowers which
last for weeks at a time. Agapanthus also flower in the summer,
along with rudbeckia - try these together for a combination of
blue/purple and yellow. Removing dead flower heads on all
these plants will encourage further flowering into the autumn.
Plan Ahead!
Take some time this month to look at what has worked in your
garden, and what can be changed in your beds and borders for
next year. If you spot any gaps, now is the time to think about
what could be planted. Lots of shrubs and new season
ornamental trees will shortly be appearing in garden centres –
the next month or two is also when you’ll see many spring
bulbs arrive in-store. All these things can be planted soon, so
decide which gaps need filling and prepare the soil in readiness
for all your new arrivals!
National climate relay event
visits the Trent Valley
By Nicola Lynes, Community Engagement Officer
2,661km 32 days - one epic relay!
This was the rallying call for the Running Out of Time relay, a long
distance relay from Ben Nevis in Scotland to Big Ben in London. Involving
thousands of people. the relay route visited nature and climate
community projects along the way.
Following our award from the Climate Coalition earlier in the year,
Transforming the Trent Valley (TTTV) team was asked if the Running out
of Time relay could visit our project area on their journey. We agreed
that Shardlow would be a suitable point for a visit; this canalside village
has recently been awarded ‘Inland Port Status’ and is the end point of
the ‘Trent Valley Way’ within the TTTV scheme area. As the relay was
focused around active, fossil-fuel-free travel, showcasing our own long
distance footpath seemed like the perfect match.
The relay reached us on 26th June. We set up our project trailer
outside the Shardlow Heritage Centre and welcomed the incoming
runners from the bridge above the towpath with a big cheer! During the
visit, the relay support crew (accompanying the relay in an electric
vehicle) interviewed the TTTV project manager and Canal and Rivers
Trust staff about the Trent Valley scheme and our partnership work to
increase access to the rivers and canals in the area.
At the end of a short visit (the baton still had a long way to travel!),
we said good luck to the outgoing runners, sending them on their way
from Shardlow to Kegworth on the next stage of the journey. The
Holidaying with
Hounds
By Lauren Hirst
Pets are part of the family so it makes sense to want to take
them on holiday with us. With a bit of planning, everyone can
enjoy a break. Here are some top tips on holidaying with hounds
(some we’ve learned the hard way!)
1. Google is a godsend to check out the area before booking. In the
past, we’ve booked a campsite or cottage thinking it was off the
beaten track only to find it’s on a noisy main road or underneath the
fight path for low-flying RAF jets – Anglesey this means you! For those
with greyhounds or jumpers – ask how high the fencing is in the
“enclosed dog-friendly garden” often it’s only 4-foot. Look for
campsites with specific dog enclosures for off lead zoomies. Most
cottages don’t allow dogs upstairs; if your dog is used to sleeping
upstairs having everything on one level may help your dog settle.
2. The best behaved dogs might “mark” when in a new place – bring
stain remover/urine off sprays/paper towels or take some old sheets
to cover the bottom of furniture. Bring your dog’s usual bed, blanket,
and toy to help him settle.
3. Holidays are not the time to start using a different food! Take
plenty of your dog’s usual food or find out where locally you can buy
it to avoid upset tums.
4. Hopefully you won’t need it, but find out where the nearest vet
(and out of hours provider) before you go. ake your insurance
documents with you. Not all areas have internet signal should you
need to find a vet in an emergency.
5. Bring a doggie first aid kit – check with your vet who can advise
about a few extras and correct dosages that may come in useful;
Piriton (but not other brands) for bee stings etc, paracetamol, calming
aids like Valerian or Bach Rescue Remedy, tick removal tools or tick
prevention treatment.
6. Ensure your microchip information is up to date and your dog’s
ID tag has your phone
mobile number on it. Small
luggage tags with the address
of your accommodation can
be clipped onto the collar
temporarily.
7. Google if local beaches
allow dogs during the
summer months – it’s so
disappointing to turn up and
find you aren’t allowed!
Check if the walk you plan to go on has any stiles – lifting a large dog
over a stile is no fun as we quickly discovered. Be aware of blue-green
algae in ponds or still water – it can be lethal to dogs.
8. Carry plenty of water and ways to cool your dog to avoid
heatstroke (cooling coats, towels or bandanas etc). Use dog friendly
sun cream for the sensitive areas on short haired dogs; ie bellies, tips
of ears, bridge of nose, bellies, groin etc. This often amuses others on
the beach!
9. Many pubs and cafes are dog-friendly these days and we always
check if the local ones allow dogs – a godsend with the vagaries of
the British weather.
10. Lastly – have a great time – most dogs enjoy exploring
somewhere new just like we do. For those who don’t, plan well in
advance as most kennels, dog sitters, and home boarders get booked
up months in advance during the holiday period.
Paving the Way to a Brighter Future
As Leader of Lichfield District Council, I fully
understand that the money we have at our
disposal comes not from the organisation’s
pockets, but directly from our residents. It is
our duty to utilise these funds responsibly,
ensuring they are used wisely for the benefit of
the entire community. Our overarching goal is
to strike a balance between fiscal prudence and
ambitious endeavours, allowing us to realise
our long-term aspirations while efficiently managing the council’s
resources.
Two years ago, I went on the hunt for a new Chief Executive to lead
the 350 or so people that work for the council. After the initial round left
me feeling slightly deflated, I was introduced to Simon Fletcher, our
current CEO. I knew immediately that with his mixture of local
government and private sector experience and his focus on creating high
performing teams and superb company cultures, he was the right fit to
take our vision forward.
He has led on the transformation of underused office space into a
vibrant business hub and cafe. This innovative initiative, which even
included converting my own office, has proven to be a resounding
success. The revenue generated from this venture now covers the annual
expenses of running the council building, relieving the burden on
taxpayers and paving the way for further entrepreneurial growth within
our district.
To further enhance our services and generate additional revenue, we
established a wholly owned subsidiary focused on providing a wide range
By Doug Pullen, Leader of Lichfield District Council
of services that had previously been outsourced to the private sector.
With projects ranging from leisure centres to disabled facilities grants and
communications, this is now projected to yield a substantial six-figure
surplus this financial year. This surplus will be reinvested directly back into
the council, empowering us to pursue even more projects right across
the district that elevate the well-being of our residents.
Our commitment to excellence extends beyond the services we
provide to our residents; it also encompasses the welfare of our
dedicated team. As a testament to our dedication to fostering a
motivated workforce, we have taken a brand-new approach to recruit
outstanding staff members - even offering private healthcare benefits (at
no additional cost to the taxpayer). By prioritising employee satisfaction,
we ensure that we have the very best team in place, working tirelessly on
behalf of our residents.
Over the past two years, we have witnessed a remarkable
transformation in our organizational culture. Our CEO’s leadership and
our collective efforts have resulted in a 33% increase in employee
satisfaction. This newfound synergy among our staff members has ignited
a chain reaction of positive changes, enabling us to achieve even greater
feats for the benefit of our community.
We know that there is still more to be done, but our focus remains
steadfast on turning our grand ambitions into tangible, transformative
realities for our residents.
I hope that we are demonstrating our passion for empowering our
community. With astute financial management, clear leadership, and a
dedicated team, we are confidently treading the path to a brighter future
within our district.
A Better Burntwood
By Darren Ennis, Leader of Burntwood Town Council
The council that asks, the council that
listens and the council that acts! It’s a
bold statement but it’s something that is
at the heart of what we do.
We recently asked residents: "What
should our priorities be when distributing
our grant funding to local charities?” We
want to make sure that the issues that
residents feel need addressing align with
where our funding goes, and the responses
have given us a clear direction and help us
better understand how our residents feel.
We all want a Better Burntwood and no one knows their town better than
the people who live, work and thrive here.
Over the last month, myself and other councillors have been visiting local
primary schools to plant oak tree saplings in celebration of HM King
Charles’ Coronation. It was fantastic to see how engaged the children were,
how they jumped straight in to dig the hole, got their hands dirty and
enjoyed planting something that will still be there in 100 years. Simply
brilliant!
July is always a busy month at Burntwood Town Council, finalising plans
for our summer events to make sure they’re the best they can be.
Burntwood Wakes was held on 22nd July and throughout August we are
hosting Play in the Parks events. Sometimes the best days are the simplest
ones and there is nothing better than meeting with friends, going on the
swings, jumping on a bouncy castle and spending time outside, and that’s
what Play in the Parks is all about. A big thank you to our partners Spark,
St John’s Church, Platinum Boxing, Fun Club Hub and the leisure services
team at Lichfield District Council for supporting us with these events.
Burntwood Town Council is committed to keeping these events free and
we are proud to make this available to our residents. We know how difficult
it can be for families to keep the children entertained without breaking the
bank, particularly over the summer holidays. If residents can’t come along
to events because of the cost they may feel less connected to the
community they are a part of, and this isn’t what we want. We are here for
all our residents, and our amazing business and voluntary sector
community in Burntwood support us with this. Again, I will say a massive
thank you to Lesters Packaging, Techcare, Crown Highways and Tara Group,
all local businesses who are helping us to keep these events free, so please
come along and join us, and let other people know too!
More specific details can be found by following Burntwood Town Council
on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, or looking at the events page on our
30p Harry Potter library book sells for £10,500 at auction
By Alex Keller, Richard Winterton Auctioneers
An ultra-rare Harry Potter book has sold at auction
in Staffordshire for a hammer price of £10,500.
Bought for 30p after being withdrawn from
Wolverhampton Library, the hardback copy of Harry
Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone went under the
hammer with Richard Winterton Auctioneers at The
Lichfield Auction Centre, Fradley Park.
Published by Bloomsbury in 1997 with a laminated
board cover, the book is one of only 500 first edition
first impressions and, of those, one of only 300 sent
to libraries.
The sale generated headlines in America, Asia,
Europe and across the UK, with the winning bid
placed over the internet from Los Angeles.
The book was estimated at £3,000 to £5,000 due
to its ‘much-loved condition’ as an ex-library book.
Auctioneer Richard Winterton said: “We’re
absolutely delighted with this result for a truly magical
find.
“The first in the original series of books by JK
Rowling, this copy has clearly been well-read and still
has its library identification sticker, spine sticker with
the letter J, withdrawal stamp and 30p selling price.”
The book was part of the personal collection of a
Staffordshire man who had a lifelong passion for
books and ephemera.
He lived in Brereton, Rugeley, for a number of years
before latterly moving to Chase Terrace, Burntwood,
and passed away unexpectedly at the beginning of the
year aged 55.
Auctioneers discovered the book after a
painstaking search of hundreds of boxes of his
belongings.
His family knew he had acquired a valuable Harry
Potter book but feared it had gone astray.
The man’s sister, who asked not to be named, said:
“When he moved house four years ago he literally
put everything into hundreds of boxes, many of which
went into containers.
“We knew that he had got the book but if you
asked him to pinpoint it he couldn’t.
“So for the last four years this book has been ‘lost’
and I think we had come to the conclusion that it had
disappeared into the ether somewhere.”
Richard Winterton Auctioneers offers free
valuations of all types of antiques and collectables at
the Fradley Park saleroom by appointment every
Thursday.
Lichfield’s Lost Pubs
The Three Crowns Hotel
By Jono Oates
Three Crowns Hotel
Just around the corner from last month’s featured Lost Pub, the former Goat’s Head
on Bore Street/Breadmarket Street, stood one of Lichfield’s best-known and oldest
pubs, the Three Crowns Hotel.
The Three Crowns on Breadmarket Street is noted for being the favourite inn of Samuel
Johnson, the man who created the Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755 –
which was perhaps not too surprising as his family home was just two doors away from the
inn, so just a short stagger home after a couple of drinks with his friends!
There are several explanations as to the meaning of the pub name The Three Crowns, but
one of these is that they represented the crowns of the biblical Three Kings, and in later years
the pub sign that was on the wall depicted the Three Kings, on their way to visit the infant
Jesus.
One of the earliest landlords of the inn was Joseph Wilkins and in September 1765 he
announced, in Aris’s Birmingham Gazette, that he: ‘Begs leave to acquaint the Public, that he
has fitted up the Inn, in a most convenient manner, for the Reception of Gentlemen,
Tradesmen, and others, that please to favour him with their Company, who may depend upon
good usage, by their humble Servant, Joseph Wilkins. At the same place may be had neat Post
Chaises with able Horses.’
Joseph was the landlord when Samuel Johnson stayed at the inn with his friend and
biographer, James Boswell, and in his book ‘The Life of Johnson’ Boswell writes that the Three
Crowns was ‘not one of the great inns, but a good old-fashioned one’ and that he and Samuel
‘enjoyed a comfortable supper and got in to high spirits’.
In April 1795 the 103rd Regiment, stationed at Lichfield, were looking for 18-year-old
James Shepherd who had deserted from the regiment. Major Dyott of Freeford Manor near
Whittington announced that ‘anyone who lodges him in any of His Majesty’s (King George
III) Gaols, or to Serjeant MacDonald at the Three Crowns in Lichfield, shall receive a reward
of Two Guineas and all reasonable expenses, over and above the reward allowed by Act of
Parliament.’ Dyott also stated that if young Shepherd returned to the regiment within 10 days
of the notice that he would receive a free pardon.
The landlord at that time was Joseph Cato, a former French prisoner-of-war, who stayed
in Lichfield after his release and became the landlord of the inn. In November 1813 Joseph
hosted a meeting of the Trustees of the Turnpike Roads through Lichfield at the inn. Matters
discussed were the proposal of a new Bill which would extend the term of the Turnpike
agreement, also enlarging the powers of the Turnpike operators, and increasing the toll
charges at the entrance gates of the turnpike roads – some things never change! Joseph was
followed as landlord of the inn by his son, John Joseph Cato. John Joseph passed away at the
venerable age of 98 in October 1851 and was succeeded as the landlord of the inn by his
son, Henry. Henry’s longevity was not as great as his father’s though and Henry passed away
just four months later in January 1852 at the slightly-less-impressive age of 59.
The spirit of Samuel Johnson returned to his former drinking haunt in November 1887
when the Three Crowns was the setting for an auction featuring the sale of Samuel’s former
family home. The bidding went up to £500 fairly quickly, then slowed, until finally reaching a
bid of £800 at which point the house was sold. The purchaser was Mr GH Johnson (no
relation to Sam!) of Southport who wanted to ‘save the building from the hands of spoilers.’
This purchase eventually allowed Samuel’s family home to open as a museum in 1901, as it
still is today.
When the Doctor Johnson Anniversary Society (now the Johnson Society) was formed
they held an annual dinner at the Three Crowns, and in September 1919 they enjoyed an ‘oldtime
supper of Johnsonian fare.’ That year’s president, Shakespeare biographer and writer Sir
Sidney Lee, provided a tribute to Samuel and they drank a toast of punch followed by a
period of silence.
The Queen Arrives
in Lichfield!
The highly anticipated Lichfield Festival was a huge success in the
city. But no venue celebrated success quite like The Hub at St
Mary’s on the afternoon of Friday 14th July as it welcomed Her
Majesty, Queen Elizabeth I!
Majestic and austere, Her Royal Highness (played by the legendary
curator of Tutbury Castle, Lesley Smith) is no stranger to Lichfield, having
once stayed from 27th July to 3rd August 1575 in The Close whilst on
her way to Kenilworth Castle to visit Robert Dudley. And she was
delighted to be returning once again to delight and fascinate the sell-out
audience.
Announced by Festival Director, Damien Thantry, as none other than
‘Her Majesty,’ the Queen alighted the stage dressed in all her finery. The
authentic handmade costume, she informed us, weighed no less than four
stone and was a marvel to behold – encrusted with jewels which
twinkled as she moved, and finished off with the familiar stark white face,
blood red lips and characteristic red wig we all associate with Elizabeth
I.
We were treated to a history of how Elizabeth, born to Henry VIII and
his second wife, Anne Boleyn, at Greenwich Palace in 1533, rose to
become Queen of England in what was to be one of the most
memorable reigns of our monarchy.
Queen Elizabeth survived Henry’s further marriages, grew close to her
brother Edward, who was King
himself for six years, and she
even let us in on what really
happened between her and
her much-rumoured
paramour, Robert Dudley.
Lesley is, quite simply, an
incredible actress. Never
breaking character she spoke
with defiance and reverence
about her early days, her loves,
her losses, and how she
conquered it all to become a
formidable ruler.
It was very easy to believe
that you were, in fact, in the
presence of the great Queen
herself and I was almost
moved to tears when she
lamented about how she had
loved Katherine Parr and yet,
still defied her.
Following the performance, Lesley posed for photographs and
answered questions, both about her character and also about herself, to
round off what was a brilliant afternoon spent with the former Queen
of England!
Lesley Smith is a medical historian, TV personality and
published author. She is well-known for her highly
entertaining and informative costume portrayals of a variety
of historical characters, which she gives both at the Castle
and across the UK (and beyond). To find out more, visit
Johnson Society
Supper
By Dr Phil Jones,
Chairman Johnson Society
Professor Robert
DeMaria Jnr
The Supper is held at 7pm on Saturday 23rd September and you will
get a splendid meal and good company for £45 per person. We have
worked hard to hold the price down. Civic dignitaries always attend as
well as representatives of Johnson’s old school, King Edward VI. The Head
Boy or Girl always gives an entertaining, short talk about what’s
happening at the school. The meal’s climax is always the inauguration of
our new President, which we do annually. This year I am delighted that
our incoming President is Professor Robert DeMaria Jnr, a Professor of
English at Vassar College. He is not only the world’s leading Johnson
scholar, but is well known to Lichfield audiences as an affable and able
speaker, having delivered our Annual Lecture on Johnson and Numbers,
a few years back. It turns out that Johnson’s mathematical skills were far
from infallible!
Robert’s standing amongst his peers was recognised by his
appointment as general editor of The Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel
Johnson, a series of 23 volumes (1958–2018). Robert oversaw the work
to its completion and it is now universally recognised as the leading
scholarly resource for students of Johnson.
Robert will be an extremely worthy successor to Post Simmonds as
our President and our Supper audience is promised a treat when we
return to The Guildhall for our Annual Supper in September, for the first
time in many years. Contact p.jones201010@yahoo.co.uk for further
information about the event.

All Creatures
Great & Small
By Lesley Smith,
Curator of Tutbury Castle
“It must be rubber,” said a woman
dismissively, looking across the Dam Street
wall at Minster Pool below. Well, I could quite
see why anyone might think the large heron
that perches each year on an overhanging
branch above the pool below could not be
real. It looks prehistoric, left over from
millions of years ago and yet there it is and
very much alive as it is on a tree at the bottom
of my garden. It is a still creature, and much
admired as groups gather to photograph its
solitary vigil for fish.
When Johnsons, the dry cleaners, was in
Market Street, a charming repeat event
happened every year. A mallard duck would hatch her ducklings
somewhere at the back entrance of the shop and on a particular
day a queue would form at the back door. Then the staff stood back,
opened the under-counter door and this duck and a happy line of
ducklings would follow through the shop, out of the front door held
open and across to Minster Pool. I never did find out if they went
up the alley and across the car park or trotted round the corner
and got to the pool via Dam Street. What I do know is that it
happened year after year, astonishing and delighting visitors to the
town in equal measure as people cried out at the sight of them.
They looked like fluffy humbugs in yellow and black stripes. I
wonder what happens now? No idea, but no doubt some readers
of Citylife will know.
Another nest hatches each year in a wall flower basket. Sensible
mother, as the ducklings are out of harm’s way, except for the small
matter of the being ten feet off the ground. They flap down,
apparently unharmed, although I have seen people dodging around
catching them. We do love our animals in Lichfield. Some days it is
like Crufts walking in Dam Street and on the grass by the pool. I am
as bad with my silver husky, Maria, often with the added
embarrassment of our two family cats coming along for the walk
too. That can be a bit of a public event as well as people stop me
for photographs of this contented family trotting along together.
The cats don’t come far but far enough to cause a sensation on the
street or round the Cathedral Close.
like a stone on a bird and carry it away to the highest restaurant in
Lichfield on the spire.
Foxes are regular visitors in our gardens, both adult and young
cubs too. The screams are haunting and will wake me up startled,
until I realise what it is. I had a panic one evening when I looked out
of a window over the garden and saw a young fox snapping at one
of my cats who was cornered against a wall. Fortunately, Foxglove
is a Norwegian Forest cat which are quite like big Maine Coons, so
could stand her ground well and was slashing and hissing at the fox.
I rushed outside with a broom and hoped it wouldn’t happen again
as next time Foxglove may not be so fortunate.
Interestingly, I have never seen badgers in Lichfield although we
have lots at Tutbury Castle. They are glamourous creatures and
trundle around the grounds. They are the last remaining members
of the bear family in England. It is always a sad feeling to see that
distinctive shape in the gutter on country lanes.
I am mindful that the hedgehog population in Britain is rapidly
declining and we should all do what we can to leave chunks of
garden as wild habitats for them. Strangely, I don’t feel that about
rats. Their habitat declining does not seem an issue to me especially
as some are so big. I saw one in Beacon Park two weeks ago, and
thought at first it was a cat. It was a quick walk home from then on!
Someone told me that squirrels are rats with good public relations.
In response to that I would hand feed a squirrel but just don’t feel
that kind towards rats – no thanks.
As a final note on the great British eccentric and pets, eleven
years ago we had a special birthday event at the Castle which went
very well until I discovered that one of the guests had brought a
skunk in a bag, which is not at all like chicken in a basket. The man
was a little worse for wear and thought it completely reasonable to
bring a surprise skunk to a party. “It’s only a young one,” he tried to
reason with staff, followed by my pet dislike phrase (always given by
people in the wrong), “It’s not doing any harm.”
Well, we thought it was, and we also felt it was unfair on the
skunk, so both were sent home. If you are wondering, they all
worked in a petting zoo! There’s certainly never a dull moment at
Tutbury Castle, that’s for sure!
The birds of prey that circle the spires of the Cathedral can draw
crowds of so called ‘twitchers’ with great long lenses on high-tech
cameras. These people seem devoted to their photographic prey.
Interesting though to see the aggressive big rooks flap off a bit
sharpish when the birds of prey are circling above, ready to drop
The History of
Trent Valley House
By Jono Oates
On the corner of one of the busiest road junctions in Lichfield stands a former
grand home, owned or rented by many well-known Lichfeldians of the past. The
house now consists of a number of business offices, and can be easily missed by
the busy traffic that travels past it, but it was once surrounded by fields and pastures and
considered to be on the outskirts of the city. Today the house is called Windsor House
but for many years it was known as Trent Valley House.
Windsor House stands at the roundabout at the junction of Cappers Lane, Trent Valley Road
and Eastern Avenue, and it is surrounded by a small business park with businesses to the side
and behind. The house was built in 1861 a hundred years before Eastern Avenue was constructed
and stood, almost on its own, at the bottom of Trent Valley Road, just a short distance from Trent
Valley railway station. In August 1863 it was sold as a freehold property and was described in the
Staffordshire Advertiser as an ‘excellent residence, with 10 and a half acres of land, and one mile
from Lichfield city centre.’ It was described, at that time, as being surrounded on three sides by
pleasure grounds and flower gardens. There were several out-buildings to the rear, with a
cowshed and a piggery. The scenery surrounding the property was ‘very pleasing’ with excellent
views of the cathedral and the spires of the city churches.
The house was also very close to the Trent Valley Brewery, which was on the Streethay road,
adjacent to the railway line, and was a very large brewery employing many local Lichfield
workers. The owner of the house in April 1882 was George Woodyatt and he complained
bitterly to Lichfield City Council about a loud steam whistle from the brewery, which was the
warning signal for the workers to ‘clock-on’ and ‘clock-off’. Mr Woodyatt’s peace was disrupted
by the whistle two times a day and he had successfully appealed, in February 1882, to the Local
Government Board to revoke the brewery’s license to blow the steam whistle. By April, however,
Mr Woodyatt’s peace was disturbed again, this time saying that the brewery had spoken to the
Rural Sanitary Authority and that they had now installed a ‘new steam whistle, just as
objectionable as the last, and have done this to my great annoyance.’ When George’s letter was
read out at the council meeting, the court reporter said that it was ‘received with some laughter.’
The council ruled against Mr Woodyatt and the whistle remained, no doubt causing further
annoyance from George and probably the use of earplugs too!
In the early 1890s the house was rented by Charles William Hamilton and his wife, Helen
Morton Hamilton, although in May 1890 they changed their surname by deed poll to Buchanan-
Hamilton. Charles was a surgeon in her Britannic Majesty’s Fleet, and later became the Deputy
Surgeon-General of the Royal Navy. In 1929, just before Charles’ death, his wife Helen converted
to Islam, changing her name to Lady Khalida Buchanan-Hamilton, a conversion which was quite
an unusual occurrence in the 1920s!
One of the most well-known and respected Lichfeldian family names from the last 150 years
has been the Winterton family, whose family-run business has been in auctioneering and estate
agencies. In August 1914 just at the outbreak of World War One, Mrs Frederic Winterton was
advertising for a nurse, aged 20 to 22, at Trent Valley House where they already employed a cook
and a house-parlourmaid.
By the late 1930s Edith Mary Manley, widow of Colonel Francis Charles Manley, who was the
son of Augustus Manley, former owner of Manley Hall at Weeford, was living at Trent Valley House
after her husband had passed away and in June 1942 she left a total of £5,313 (£300,000 today)
in her will after her own death.
Inventor James Wilson lived at Trent Valley House in the 1940s and his firm, Wilson’s of
Wolverhampton Ltd, won first prize in the Inventors Society Exhibition, held at New Street,
Birmingham, in December 1947, with his invention the ‘Awlsize’ bench vice, described by the
panel as the best commercial proposition exhibited.
In later years the name of the building was changed to Windsor House and now it is situated
on one of the busiest road junctions in Lichfield, but at one time it was situated in a quiet,
picturesque and peaceful location - only being disrupted by the noise of the railway engines
running past from Trent Valley station and the sound of the annoying steam whistle from the
nearby brewery!
