Holidaying with Hounds By Lauren Hirst Pets are part of the family so it makes sense to want to take them on holiday with us. With a bit of planning, everyone can enjoy a break. Here are some top tips on holidaying with hounds (some we’ve learned the hard way!) 1. Google is a godsend to check out the area before booking. In the past, we’ve booked a campsite or cottage thinking it was off the beaten track only to find it’s on a noisy main road or underneath the fight path for low-flying RAF jets – Anglesey this means you! For those with greyhounds or jumpers – ask how high the fencing is in the “enclosed dog-friendly garden” often it’s only 4-foot. Look for campsites with specific dog enclosures for off lead zoomies. Most cottages don’t allow dogs upstairs; if your dog is used to sleeping upstairs having everything on one level may help your dog settle. 2. The best behaved dogs might “mark” when in a new place – bring stain remover/urine off sprays/paper towels or take some old sheets to cover the bottom of furniture. Bring your dog’s usual bed, blanket, and toy to help him settle. 3. Holidays are not the time to start using a different food! Take plenty of your dog’s usual food or find out where locally you can buy it to avoid upset tums. 4. Hopefully you won’t need it, but find out where the nearest vet (and out of hours provider) before you go. ake your insurance documents with you. Not all areas have internet signal should you need to find a vet in an emergency. 5. Bring a doggie first aid kit – check with your vet who can advise about a few extras and correct dosages that may come in useful; Piriton (but not other brands) for bee stings etc, paracetamol, calming aids like Valerian or Bach Rescue Remedy, tick removal tools or tick prevention treatment. 6. Ensure your microchip information is up to date and your dog’s ID tag has your phone mobile number on it. Small luggage tags with the address of your accommodation can be clipped onto the collar temporarily. 7. Google if local beaches allow dogs during the summer months – it’s so disappointing to turn up and find you aren’t allowed! Check if the walk you plan to go on has any stiles – lifting a large dog over a stile is no fun as we quickly discovered. Be aware of blue-green algae in ponds or still water – it can be lethal to dogs. 8. Carry plenty of water and ways to cool your dog to avoid heatstroke (cooling coats, towels or bandanas etc). Use dog friendly sun cream for the sensitive areas on short haired dogs; ie bellies, tips of ears, bridge of nose, bellies, groin etc. This often amuses others on the beach! 9. Many pubs and cafes are dog-friendly these days and we always check if the local ones allow dogs – a godsend with the vagaries of the British weather. 10. Lastly – have a great time – most dogs enjoy exploring somewhere new just like we do. For those who don’t, plan well in advance as most kennels, dog sitters, and home boarders get booked up months in advance during the holiday period.
