The District Remembers
By Doug Pullen, Leader of Lichfield District Council
As a long-time resident of Lichfield District,
I have had the privilege of witnessing the
community's unwavering commitment to
Remembrance Sunday over the years. The
solemn tradition of honouring the fallen holds
a special place in the hearts of Lichfield
residents, forging a deep connection between
generations.
Lichfield District stands as a beacon of remembrance in the heart of
England as the home of the National Memorial Arboretum, the UK's yearround
centre of remembrance. This unique and sacred place, set against
the backdrop of our picturesque countryside, is a living memorial, paying
homage to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our
country, and a place which many of us will no doubt have spent some
thoughtful hours.
The National Memorial Arboretum is more than just a collection of
trees and memorials - it's a place of contemplation, education, and
reflection. Here, residents, along with visitors from across the nation,
come to learn about the history of our armed forces, remember our
fallen heroes, and connect with the stories of bravery that define our
shared heritage.
For our community, the National Memorial Arboretum serves as a
place where we can personally pay our respects to friends, family, or
comrades who have passed. It's a place of solace and healing, and on
Remembrance Sunday, we often see residents returning to honour the
memory of loved ones and share their stories with others.
Lichfield's association with the National Memorial Arboretum and its
status as the National Centre of Remembrance adds an extra layer of
significance to our Remembrance Sunday ceremonies. It's a connection
that unites residents of all backgrounds and ages, allowing us to pay
tribute to those who have given their all and find solace in our shared
history.
As we approach another Remembrance Sunday in our beloved City and
District, I can't help but be grateful for the opportunity to be a part of
this enduring tradition. Together, we remember, and together, we pay
tribute to those who have given their all.
November Festivities
By Darren Ennis, Leader of Burntwood Town Council
November is always a mixed bag of different
events. There’s Bonfire Night, Armistice
Day, my birthday and our fabulous Christmas
events and light switch on, a great opportunity
to see if I can still squeeze into my Christmas
suit!
Remembrance Sunday is an important day in the
calendar where the people of Burntwood come
together to show that they will not forget the sacrifices others have made.
Burntwood Action Group create a poignant display of poppies at Princes
Park and this year have been working alongside Chase Terrace Academy
students to make the poppies for the display. There will be four events
throughout the morning at St John’s Community Church, Burntwood
Memorial Hall, Chasetown Memorial Park and Princes Park, supported by
the Scouts, Veterans, Police Community Support Officers and many others.
It’s incredibly moving to see the community come together and remember
those who gave their lives for our freedoms.
Towards the end of November, we have quite a list of fantastic Christmas
Tree light switch on events for your calendars. Working with partners
throughout the town, there are events on at Boney Hay on Monday 20th
November organised by Burntwood Town Council, Chasetown High Street
on Thursday 23rd November organised by Tara Group, Sankey’s Corner on
8
Saturday 25th November organised by Burntwood Town Council, Swan
Island on Sunday 26th November organised by the Rotary Club and Morley
Road shops on Saturday 2nd December organised by the Co-op. There is
something for everyone and all of the events are free. We really do have the
best community.
Keeping with the theme of community, last year we were supported by
a range of partners to launch our Warmer Welcome initiative, providing
warm spaces across the town for residents struggling with the cost-ofliving
crisis. After talking to the volunteers who run these fantastic sessions,
we realised that people really come along for friendship and company, so
we have rebranded this initiative as “Burntwood Welcome Spaces” to
reflect that the groups are there for all our residents to come for a chat
and a drink. We have worked with some amazing partners like Burntwood
Library, Burntwood Memorial Hall, Chasetown Football Club, St John’s
Church, Chasetown Methodist Church, St Anne’s Church, Burntwood
Leisure Centre and Emmanuel Church to deliver these groups, and all are
carrying on with this fantastic scheme with the support of Burntwood
Town Council. Please have a look at Burntwood Welcome Space on
Facebook for more details.
Further information on all our events and activities can be found by
following Burntwood Town Council on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, or
on our website www.burntwood-tc.gov.uk.

A Spooky Time of Year
By Lauren Hirst
Halloween and Bonfire Night can be lots of
fun for humans but not so much for our
dogs. With the night’s drawing in you may
find your dog reluctant to go out for evening walks
and with ghouls and goblins walking the streets
and loud bangs and the smell of who can blame
them?
Here are some top tips on how to make the
autumnal festive season a bit easier for our canine
companions.
Halloween - Opinions vary about whether dogs
should be dressed up at any time of the year but it can
be tempting especially for Halloween. Introduce the
costume gradually and practice before the big event
rewarding with treats. Then you will know whether
your dog will tolerate it and of course, never make
them wear something if they don’t want to.
Taking dogs out trick or treating is scary – all those
strange looking figures and excited children! Make
sure your trick or treat stash is kept well away from
your dog – chocolate is poisonous for dogs and
anything with Xylitol can cause liver damage. Please
note that Xylitol is sometimes now referred to as
“birch sugar” on the list of ingredients.
Stuck with what to do with your pumpkin after
Halloween? At one time it was suggested to put it out
in the woods for wildlife but apparently it can make
them poorly. If your pumpkin is still in pretty good
condition, scrape it out, cut into small pieces, roast in
the oven until soft, take the skin off, and dogs love it!
Just a tablespoon or two with their food is good for
them or just feed as a treat.
Bonfire Night – Some dogs aren’t bothered by
fireworks, but many are petrified. It’s heartbreaking to
see a dog shaking and panting with fear. There is quite
a lot of advice online about how to deal with this and
talk to your vet about medication that can be
prescribed in severe cases. But there are some simple
things you can do to help.
Walk and feed early. Exercise and a large meal can
help make them feel sleepy. Make a den somewhere in
the house with some soft bedding and perhaps
blankets over the top of a table or crate to create a
safe place or in the cupboard under the stairs –
wherever your dog feels comfortable.
Keep all your doors, windows, and curtains closed
and turn up the TV or radio. Some radio stations play
music specifically to help dogs. Reggae with its strong
beat seems to disguise the bangs more than classical
music for my dogs. It’s Bob Marley on loop via You Tube
in our house.
Some calming remedies don’t need a prescription
i.e. Adaptil plug-ins and collars, Dorwest Valerian
Tincture, Calmex, Bach Rescue remedy and others.
They do need to be taken before the fireworks start
to be effective.
If you want to try and desensitise your
dog to fireworks there are CDs and
online resources where you start off
playing the bangs and whizzes softly and
gradually increase the volume but you
need to start several weeks before. No
one method works for all dogs so it is
trial and error which works best for your
dog.
It is a myth that if you comfort your
dog, you reinforce the fearful behaviour.
This simply isn’t true as no dogs WANTS
to be scared. You can make your dog
more fearful if you do something that
makes him or her more afraid. Emotions
are contagious so try and remain calm,
with gentle reassurance.
If you are interested in adopting one of our gorgeous greyhounds, please get in touch
asap to visit our Greyhound Trust Hall Green kennels before the whizzes and bangs begin.
Come and meet Chucky! Unlike his Halloween namesake, he is the biggest, most cuddly
boy going. Hopefully you and Chucky (or one of our other 40 hounds) can have a
Get Your Christmas
Smile Sorted!
In August 2023, figures published by HealthWatch reported that dentists still see
fewer patients than they did pre-pandemic. Louise Ansari, Chief Executive
Officer of HealthWatch, stated: "The report supports our evidence which
shows that people in every corner of England are struggling to get the dental
treatment they need when they need it."
Of course, this is based on all forms of dental treatment and, while appointments are
scarce in many NHS practices, many people may not realise that they can get direct
appointments with a clinical dental technician privately if they require an oral prosthetic
(dentures). If you are registered to a practice you can ask to be referred to Lichfield
Smiles via its online referral form prescribing you for treatment or, if you are not part
of a practice, Lichfield Smiles can arrange private consultation with a dentist who will
check the oral care and prescribe treatment.
Michelle’s Story
For 10 years Michelle Williams had a fear of Dentists, not being able to wear night
guards that caused a severe gag reflex she reluctantly tried to have a NHS denture fitted.
“Uncomfortable, clumpy and plastic looking” is how she describes it.
There was nothing natural feeling about it she explain. She couldn’t eat and struggled
to even keep it in the mouth and with so much frustration caused by it, she threw it
away.
In June 2022 it was Father’s Day weekend and her two front teeth broke over the
consecutive days. Understandably devastated and totally distraught she was unable to
have implants. Michelle describes how it was ruining her life, crying, unable to leave the
house without a mask. Using her hand to cover her mouth as she spoke to anyone, it
was destroying her self confidence.
Referred from her own Dentist, she attended a consultation at Lichfield Smiles.
“Matt gave me hope”. Says Michelle.
“There were options on the type of denture, different teeth which I could physically
hold and relate to how mine would feel…Matt was informative and made me feel
comfortable he’s such a gentle reassuring person.”
At the try in, it was explained that it wasn’t only about how they look at that stage
but it was to make sure the fit and feel is rite. Even then Michelle saw herself and the
tears began to flow as she was so happy with the results.
After having her final fit, Michelle says that it did take a while to get used to eating
again but can now enjoy any meal. “Even running the tongue over the teeth feels
natural”.
Her confidence is back, her photos on social media and telling everyone how happy
she is has given back her confidence.
Being asked what she would say to others concerned about paying privately and the
increased cost that can occur her reply was: “The fit is different, they are made
differently and the time is taken for each
individual detail. Do it, it’s mind blowing.
“The best money I’ve ever spent, it’s given me
my life back!”
With Christmas fast approaching many
people want to have their dentures complete
and fitting well to enjoy the holidays and feel
comfortable. At Lichfield Smiles, we generally
work over a five-stage appointment plan from
the initial consultation to the review after a
fit. To guarantee completion for Christmas,
treatment will need to start in November, so
Omens and Signs
Pupils Get Switched On!
By Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle
The leaves are now changing, and the unseasonal warmth
is replaced by rain and the click of central heating going on
in our homes. In centuries past, including here in Lichfield,
there would have been concerns about signs and warnings
through the weather. Society believed that heaven used the
stars to broadcast information, using the black velvet to
scatter stellar diamonds that could be read by stargazers.
Comets and shooting stars were warnings of war or
confusingly, the birth of a great person on earth. Not
necessarily a member of royalty.
Horoscopes were also prepared by these heaven-readers,
often dressed in theatrical cloaks. If possible and safe, the
charts would be drawn up on the roof of the property where the child was being
born. A stargazer arriving at your home in a public show was the height of fashion.
The husband, unable to enter the birthing chamber, kept himself busy on the roof
too. Interestingly, in the Tudor period, the Church would not have complained about
this as reading the heavens was part of the training in humanities at universities
across Europe, which formed the starting point for many professions, including
physicians. The stars were thought to affect our health and propensity to certain
illnesses or weaknesses from birth.
Equally the weather and tides of change in the weather were believed to be
warnings from heaven. You can see how thunder and lightning could be perceived as
a great drama, and people would rush about covering up anything shiny for fear the
lightning would seek out its own, and strike the house. Heatwaves brought a risk of
plague and as the fresh water sources, dried up so many illnesses plagued towns and
cities particularly. Society accepted it was usual to be hot in summer and cold and
wet in the winter. It was the extremes that appeared to be interventions.
Life was rather on the edge for people with poor medicine and a weak
understanding about diet. Then there were wars and childbirth to consider in the
battles for survival. No wonder superstition played such a large part of our lives.
Look around you - for some people, it still does.
Keep warm. Happy Autumn.
The History of the
Franciscan Friary
By Jono Oates
Just outside of the city centre, alongside the Friary Road, lies the remains of the
former Franciscan Friary, one of Lichfield’s oldest buildings and which has, over
the centuries, been a family home, a high school for girls, a public library and now
residential apartments.
The Franciscan Friary was built in 1237 at the time of Bishop Alexander De Stavenby of
Lichfield and Coventry, and was built outside the centre of Lichfield on the west side.
Originally a wooden structure it was built using the trees from the forests that surrounded
Lichfield at that time, from the villages of Alrewas, Whittington and Hopwas near Tamworth.
As there was no natural running water at Lichfield, the Franciscan monks were supplied
with water from pipes, or conduits, which transported water from a spring at the small
hamlet of Aldershaw, a couple of miles away (see my other feature on Aldershaw Hall).
In 1291 a fire swept through Lichfield destroying much of the centre and also destroying
the wood-built friary. A public fund was raised to enable the building to be rebuilt and, this
time, as a stone structure. In 1538 the dissolution of the monasteries took place under the
orders of King Henry VIII. The Friary was destroyed and all of the fixtures and fittings were
sold off, with the proceeds going to the Crown. Most of the buildings including the chapel,
living quarters and refectory were completely destroyed and only a handful of smaller
outbuildings remained.
In 1545 the remaining buildings became owned by Gregory Stonynge who developed
them as a family residence, landscaping the areas surrounding the buildings. Stonynge
became the first Mayor (then Senior Bailiff) of Lichfield in 1548, the first Sheriff of Lichfield
in 1553 and was also the Master of the Blessed Guild of St Mary in 1536. After Gregory
died, the house was passed to his son, and it then became a typical family residence for
several centuries and a fireplace with his name on still exists today.
During the ‘Glorious Revolution’ (the Jacobite uprising of 1745) the Duke of
Cumberland, the son of George II, used the Friary buildings as his temporary headquarters
as his troops searched the local area looking for the soldiers of Bonnie Prince Charlie of
Scotland. The duke’s search was in vain though, as the Jacobite army had already turned
back towards Scotland, and only light skirmishes took place around Lichfield.
Mr John Toke Godfrey-Faussett, a registrar of the Probate Court, owned the building by
1891 and by 1894 a wealthy landowner from Wolverhampton, Ms Theodisia Hinckes, was
the owner before it became home to the last private owner, Colonel Henry Williams.
Williams sold it to Lichfield benefactor Sir Richard Cooper of Shenstone Court in 1919,
but he did not intend to live at the Friary. He had purchased it so that it could be used as
a community facility for the people of Lichfield and when the Girl’s High School were
looking to move into larger premises from their home at Yeomanry House on St John
Street, he transferred the building to Staffordshire County Council who allowed the high
school to move into the new building. This was intended to be a short-term lease as the
County Council were intending to build a new school on Cherry Orchard but when that
didn’t materialise, the buildings were enlarged to cater for more students and remained as
the High School for Girls. The school later became a mixed comprehensive school in the
1970s, relocating to become the Friary Grange school on Eastern Avenue in the 1980s.
Sir Richard Cooper provided the funds to build the Friary Road, from the junction of
Bird Street, Bore Street and Bird Street in 1928, the road linked through to the Bowling
Green roundabout, then up to the Walsall Road. The new road was officially opened in
1928 and provided a direct link from Lichfield to Walsall. At the same time Sir Richard
provided the funds to relocate the Clock Tower from its original location at the three-way
junction mentioned previously to the Bowling Green roundabout, where it still stands
today.
In 1933 excavations were carried out on the site of the original Friary site and the
foundations were left exposed to display the layout of the original structures. A portico at
The Friary Road, and High School, 1930s
The Friary Market Stalls, 1960s
Gregorie Stonynge's Fire Place
the entrance of the foundations was put in place
in 1937, relocated from Shenstone Court and yet
another gift from benefactor Sir Richard Cooper
to the city of Lichfield.
By the late 1980s the building had become
home to the Lichfield Library and Record Office
but today the main part of the building remains
empty, awaiting development as apartments.
Your Garden in November
By Byron Lewis
November brings the start of colder weather, darker nights and
for many people, the end of the gardening season. But there are
still containers and hanging baskets that can be filled with
colourful plants to take you through the darkest months (if you
haven’t already changed them over). Choose from bedding plants
like viola and pansy combined with a selection of dwarf shrubs
and drop in some spring bulbs for extra colour next year.
Bulbs can still be planted – indeed tulips are best planted through
November. There are literally hundreds of varieties you can
choose from, but most garden centres will stock the more
popular types such as the Darwin range – a classic tulip flower
shape, which is ideal for the border. For more exposed spots or
tubs, choose dwarf varieties such as Red Riding Hood with
attractive foliage as well as red flowers.
Roses are ideal for planting in November too – most garden
centres have a delivery of freshly potted roses around now. These
tend to be bare of foliage at this time of year, but the range tends
to be wider, plus planting this month allows them to become
established earlier next spring. If you’ve not got space yet,
consider buying them and leaving them in their pots until ready
to plant. They are pretty much dormant so won’t be actively
growing – just keep them upright and damp and they should be
fine for at least a few weeks.
Also worth looking at now are hedging plants and fruit
trees/bushes. Like the roses, many of these will have been recently
potted ready for the next year – plant these as soon as you can
using some good quality compost and bonemeal added into the
planting hole – this encourages root growth so your plants
become established quickly next year. Again, the range will be
much better now than in the spring/summer months. Check out
all of these at your local garden centre in the coming weeks.
As we hit the end of the year, most people turn their attention to
Christmas. Next month, we’ll take a look at selecting the perfect
REAL Christmas Tree and have plenty of tips to keep your tree
looking good into the New Year.
Lichfield Garden Centre's Christmas Shop is now open, with a
huge range of new and unusual Christmas decorations, lights and
Christmas gifts.
The Lichfield Cathedral Light Show is back!
Lichfield Cathedral has been delighting its visitors for years with an
annual Christmas Light Show, with visitors describing the experience as
‘mesmerising and magical’, and ‘perfect to get into the Christmas spirit’.
For 2023, Lichfield Cathedral promises another spectacular show
delivered by the acclaimed animation team: Illuminos. There will be
audiovisual shows on the Bishop’s Palace and West Front and the festive
experience will continue inside the Cathedral alongside a visit to the
stunning Christmas Tree Festival. Illuminos will be using the popular carol
‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ to tell the Christmas story, introducing visitors
to a kind and generous fox who gives gifts to other animals he meets
along his journey to see the newborn baby Jesus.
Jan McFarlane, Interim Dean of Lichfield, said: “When the team at
Illuminos came to us with their concept for 2023 we were blown away.
Last year they delivered a West Front teaming with singing angels, and we
didn’t know how they could top that! ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ is such a
recognised and well-loved carol, so with the haunting tune and beautiful
lyrics as the backdrop, they will weave in the journey of a fox to the
manger. The fox represents the outsider, often greeted with suspicion but
even so in this story the fox offers what he has to those animals he meets
along the way. There is something profound in the Christ Child accepting
the offerings of those who are treated with suspicion by others.
We loved this concept so much that we are going to base our
Christmas Eve Crib Service on it. We invite everyone to come along, this
has become somewhat of a tradition for many people from all over the
region and if you haven’t been along yet, do come and join in! You are
always welcome at your Cathedral.”
The Christmas Light Show is sponsored by Richard Winterton
By Helen Smith
Brand new nail and beauty salon,
Luxe Nails in Lichfield, recently
opened its doors so I was
delighted to pop along and get my
nails done just in time for my holiday
in October.
On entering the salon, I was met by a
beautifully and stylishly decorated,
welcoming environment and the friendly
owner, Sally. She took my coat, offered me
a coffee and a seat, and after a chat about
my lifestyle and nails habits, I decided to
go for the BIAB (Builder Gel) to help
grow my nails as this is a more hardwearing
finish. I also added a French tip
for a timelessly classic look.
After being made comfortable the
preparation on my nails began with my
cuticles being treated and my nails filed meticulously, ready for the base
and the BIAB to be applied. I chose a
neutral colour to accompany the French
tip for a natural finish.
The atmosphere in the salon is very
relaxed and we all had lovely chats, which
made me feel very welcome and
comfortable. My nails were finished
perfectly, they look natural, stylish and
daily activities without feeling restricted. I
Beatles autographs from day they received MBEs sell for £7,400
By Alex Keller, Richard Winterton Auctioneers
Autographs signed by The Beatles on the day
they received their MBEs have sold at auction in
Lichfield for £7,400.
The set, pictured, was bought by a lifelong
Beatles fan from Staffordshire, who said the
purchase fulfilled a ‘lifetime’s ambition’.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George
Harrison and Ringo Starr signed at Buckingham
Palace on October 26 1965 for Birmingham fire
officer George Goodman, who was also there
to receive the MBE.
Mr Goodman requested the autographs for
his 12-year-old daughter Joy, bluntly telling the
musicians: “I don’t know what she sees in you!”
The hilariously honest exchange was noted
by Paul McCartney at a Beatles press
conference following the investiture.
Nearly six decades on, Joy’s autograph book
went under the hammer with Richard
Winterton Auctioneers at The Lichfield Auction
Centre on Monday, October 9 – coincidentally
John Lennon’s birthday.
The new owner, who asked to remain
anonymous, said it was the story behind the
signatures which spurred him into bidding.
“It has been a lifetime’s ambition to have The
Beatles’ autographs but I’d never seen the right
set,” said the 57-year-old, who has been a
Beatles fan since watching A Hard Day’s Night
on TV at the age of 10.
“I’d never bid at auction before, saw the story
about the autographs on a news website by
chance and it just all fell into place.
“It was the story behind these autographs
which did it, you can’t fault it. The signatures are
so clear, they are all together on the same page
and the provenance is unbelievable.”
He added: “If someone had told me when I
started in 1976 that it would all lead to this, I
would never have believed them. It really has
been the fulfilment of a long-held ambition.”
Joy, now 70, accompanied Mr Goodman to
the palace with her sister Jill and their mum
Doris on the day her dad received his MBE.
Speaking after the auction, she said: “I’m really
pleased for the buyer. I wanted my autograph
book to go to someone who would treasure it,
so this is a perfect fit.”
The new owner added: “I am so pleased to
know that she is happy about the sale and that
the signatures have indeed gone to a good
home where they will remain intact inside the
original autograph book.”
Rob French, valuer at Richard Winterton
Auctioneers, said: “I am delighted for both our
vendor and buyer, with these superb signatures
finding a perfect new home.”
The History of
Aldershaw Hall
By Jono Oates
Just off the road towards Wall, in a delightful woodland setting, lies Aldershaw Hall, a
late Victorian building owned by several leading figures in the history of Lichfield,
Burton-Upon-Trent and Walsall.
The hall was said to have been built on the site of a previous manor, which could trace its
history back to the time of the Norman invasion. The manor and estate became the property of
the Lyttleton family, followed by John Burns at the time of Queen Elizabeth I, then John Nicholls,
a mercer from Lichfield who married Sarah, daughter of Richard Dyott of Streethay and a
supporter of Parliament during the English Civil War. The original manor hall was demolished in
the 1890s and replaced by the building that still exists today at a building cost of £5,300. It was
designed by Samuel Loxton and later work was carried out by John Harry Hickton and Henry
Edward Farmer, architects from Walsall, who took over Loxton’s practice when he died in 1895.
In 1894 the hall was purchased by Captain William Bealey Harrison, who had been born at
Norton Hall, Norton Canes (the hall was demolished in 1933). Harrison had been a captain in
the Staffordshire Rifle Volunteer Corps and had played first-class cricket for the Gentlemen of
the North versus the Gentlemen of the South in 1861 at Lord’s cricket ground. He later became
a coal industrialist in Walsall, before acquiring Aldershaw Hall.
In March 1894, Captain Harrison sent a letter of complaint about the Lichfield Post Office to
the Lichfield Mercury. He had wired a message from London to his neighbour, Mr Lomax, advising
him to collect him from Trent Valley station at 6.30pm that day. However, instead of addressing
it to Lomax the Post Office addressed it to Harrison himself, meaning that Lomax did not pick
up the message. After waiting a while Captain Harrison then had to order a cab and take him
and his luggage to Aldershaw costing him five shillings which he saw as being due to the ‘careless
neglect’ of the Lichfield Post Office.
Captain Harrison was clearly not a man to be messed with and in September 1900 he was
involved in an unseemly spat in the letters to the editor of the Lichfield Mercury. Harrison
alleged that Frederic Brown of the Mercury had stated that he had a conservation with Arthur
Barnes, a solicitor on St John Street, who remarked that Harrison had claimed that he had bet
’10-to 1’ that he would be returned to the Lichfield constituency in the upcoming Parliamentary
elections. Harrison strongly denied this and asked Barnes to explain himself. Barnes replied to
say that the comment he had made was clearly intended to be a joke amongst friends in a private
conversation, but that he believed his informant was telling the truth about the betting. Harrison
replied saying that ‘jokes of this kind were very silly’ and demanding to know the name of Barnes’
informant. The solicitor declined to provide the name… some things in politics never change!
Harrison passed away in 1913 leaving an estate in his will of £133,700, a small fortune in those
days, and the hall and estate passed to his son Colonel William Edward Harrison, who then sold
it to Sir Richard Cooper in July 1913. Cooper, an MP for Walsall, also owned Shenstone Court
as well as owning the Friary buildings, later to become the Friary School for Girls, and was one
of Lichfield’s greatest benefactors.
By the 1920s the hall was owned by James Thomas Eadie, the son of James Eadie, who had
founded the James Eadie Brewery in Burton-Upon-Trent which was later acquired as part of the
Bass Brewery group. When he died in July 1923, aged 62, he was described as a ‘very kind and
considerate employer who won the respect of everyone’.
The 70th anniversary of the Church of England’s Children’s Society was held at Aldershaw Hall
in August 1951, where the hosts were Gordon Cooper and his wife. There was a demonstration
by Lichfield’s famous ‘Windermere Swimmer’ Jim Clancy, a ‘prettiest ankle’s’ competition (for
both men and women), a ‘bowling for pigs’ competition and a baby beauty show, followed by an
evening of Dancing by Floodlight to the music of Art Hawksleys’s band. Gordon Cooper, a farmer,
served two terms of office as Sheriff of Lichfield in the 1950s and died in 1967, when Winterton
and Sons sold, by auction, his entire stud of 27 horses including the successful stallion, Vidi Vici.
Today, Aldershaw Hall is privately-owned, as well as being the site of a horse stables and yard,
and is set in one of the prettiest locations in Staffordshire.
Lichfield
Camera Club
The start of Lichfield Camera Club’s new
season saw a change to the format of
club’s internal competitions with each
entry being scored by an external, independent
judge out of a total of 20 marks.
The high standard of images clearly impressed
judge Mike Taylor who awarded maximum marks to
four images and 19 points to a further 13 images.
There were some excellent still life images
including Nan’s Favourite by Peter Evans; “Poppies”
was a very effective monochrome by Sandra
Morgan; and “Rainbow Vases” from Anne Anderson
added a splash of colour and lovely reflections.
Andy Malbon captured this moody landscape
“Castle Stalker”; Richard Plant showed how to
effectively frame a subject with anther moody
image “Three sheep, two trees, one foggy morning”;
and in contrast, Madeleine Butler’s photograph
“Flowering Rush” displays soft, pastel colours
against a nicely defocused background.
Architectural shots were popular entries as
shown by Kevin Terry’s traditional, iconic image
“Whitby Abbey”; Ann Wright took a very different
approach in her ethereal image “Bangkok Skyline”;
and Nigel Lord captured the colours of Italy with
his cityscape “Piazza Armerina”.
All the fun (and scares) of the fair can be seen in
Steev Stamford’s “How much fun are we having”,
and finally, the sensitive portrait “Xenia”, by Steve
Clifford, was one of two images by him that score a
maximum 20
marks.
Floodplain
Reconnection at
Tucklesholme
By Marie Smith
Transforming the Trent Valley is on the cusp of
completing a major river and floodplain
enhancement project at Tucklesholme Nature
Reserve, owned by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.
The transformation at Tucklesholme is part of a bigger
habitat enhancement project that aims to create a connected
wetland corridor along the River Trent’s floodplain to
increase species diversity. The first phase began in the central
area of the Washlands in Burton and was completed in
summer 2022. This new phase has connected Tucklesholme
in the south to Claymills in the north following the route of
the River Trent.
Work has been focused around the northern lake and
adjacent river bank, where the floodplain has been lowered.
This has enabled Transforming the Trent Valley to create a
shallower gradient to the river bank, which will help water
flow into the northern lake more easily. A channel has also
been adapted to allow a continuous connection between the
river and the lake. Not only does this contribute to flood
prevention downstream, but it also means fish will have
access to an area of calm water to rest and breed, whilst still
able to move freely between environments.
To keep the process as holistic and disruption-free as
possible, soil and gravels that have been removed will be
placed into the lake to create shallows and pools at the lake
edge. Different depths in the lake provides variation in
habitat, such as shallow reedbeds, which will in turn
encourage a range of invertebrates for nesting and wading
Tastes of the Season
By Simon Smith
It’s All in the Game!
Autumn brings a big change in
foodstuffs as we move into the colder
months. Gone are the long hot days of
summer and we are now into the time
of year where comfort food, game and
preserved fruits become an essential
part of our diet.
Pheasant shooting season starts on 1st
October and pheasant is widely
available. As with all game, it is a very
lean meat as it has to work hard for its
food and burns as many calories as it
eats. If only it were that simple for the human species! ‘To hang or
not to hang, that is the question’ - personally I don’t see any
benefit from hanging a pheasant for more than a day. Our tastes
have changed through the years and people no longer enjoy eating
game that smells ‘high’. It already has a different flavour by its very
nature and does not need enhancing to my mind. The same applies
to most other game dishes.
Hare used to be fairly common, but these days is less easy to find
and you would have to go to a reputable game butcher to buy it.
If not available, it’s always worth asking the butcher if he knows
anyone who can source some. Last time I needed one, Russell’s in
Shenstone came up with the goods as one of their staff goes
shooting.
Game is best eaten pink as it becomes tough very quickly and it
benefits from the addition of fat to the cooking, either by
wrapping in streaky bacon or by cooking in butter if pan fried. It
adds to both the flavour and rapid destruction of our arteries, so
be careful!
Pheasant & Prune Sausage with Bubble & Squeak
4 x pheasant breasts
1 x chicken breast
4ozs dried prunes
1 x red onion
Seasoning
Thyme
1lb seasoned mashed potato
4ozs cooked sprouts
2 x grated carrots
1 x red onion
½ pt thick gravy
1 shot port
Prune juice
Method
Whizz the pheasant and chicken breast through the food
processor, along with diced red onion and seasoning. Add chopped
prunes and thyme. Pipe mix into cling film and fold as a sausage.
Poach in simmering water for five mins. Cool, unwrap and fry as a
sausage.
For the bubble and squeak, finely dice the red onion and mix with
the mash, grated carrot and chopped sprouts. Fry the mixture in
a little oil and butter.
Boil the gravy, add the port and prune juice. Assemble the dish as
shown.
Venison with Redcurrant & Orange Syrup
4 x venison cutlets
4 x rashers streaky bacon
4tbsps redcurrant jelly
2 shots cassis
1 orange
2tsps pink or green peppercorns
Orange juice
Method
Wrap the individual
cutlets in streaky
bacon and cook in a
medium oven for 10-
15 minutes. Remove
the zest and segment
the orange. Put the
cassis into a pan with
the orange zest,
redcurrant jelly and
orange juice. Simmer
and mix together, add
peppercorns to finish
and garnish with
orange segments. Pour
over the game chops
as a glaze.
