LOCAL NEWS 6 Children’s Artwork at Cathedral Lichfield Cathedral has created a special exhibition of mini-installations this autumn that showcases children’s artwork and crafts alongside the stunning Gaia installation by Luke Jerram. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see Gaia in the Nave of the Cathedral and then continue their journey around the Cathedral to discover an indoor garden space, an aquarium complete with water effect lights and an artwork depicting a crashing wave made of plant-based cellulose, recycled and bead light catchers, suspended clouds and more. Visitors will also be able to take home with them a free booklet containing reflections and information about the exhibition. This exhibition has been made possible thanks to the generous support of The Kirby Laing Foundation. Journey Through Creation is open during usual opening hours and as part of the special Gaia Evening Events. Fiendish Fundraising Halloween’s traditional association with ghosts and ghoulies will be on show for members of Lichfield Festival Friends this month. The group, which raises funds in support of Lichfield Festival, held a successful Race Night fundraiser in September, but throughout the evening were teasingly described by the MC as “Lichfield Festival FIENDS”! This has inspired Stuart Tetley, one of the committee, to produce a special “fiendish” version of the logo (which he originally designed), and this will appear on the group’s November Newsletter. Lichfield Festival Friends’ next event is an ABBA tribute show by F-ABBA, who will perform at The Thomas Spencer Hall, Whittington WS14 9LE on Saturday November 18th. Your Chance to Play Chess With the season only a few weeks old Lichfield Chess Club’s membership is already nudging the 50 mark. This is one of the highest totals this century, and by running two venues on two separate nights, there are still membership openings available. The club’s main venue is the Guildroom on the ground floor of the Guildhall, open on Monday evenings from 7.15pm. There are also meetings on Monday evenings during the year in two upstairs rooms at the Brewhouse & Kitchen at the junction of Bore Street and Bird Street. The club has members from the age of eight to 85 and offers opportunities for both friendly games and league competition on one of 18 teams competing in four Midlands Leagues. Job Fair Attracts Hundreds Jobseekers have praised the variety of work positions available at Lichfield Jobs Fair this week. The event, at the Guildhall in Bore Street, was attended by more than 300 people in October, with some 450 vacancies on offer in a wide range of sectors. Organised by the Department of Work and Pensions in partnership with Lichfield District Council, representatives from 27 employers were on hand to meet jobseekers and offer advice. The face-to-face contact with jobseekers resulted in employers arranging more than 200 follow-up interviews. The next Lichfield Jobs Fair is set to take place in spring 2024. ....................................................................................... Aviation Photos Discovered Photograph captioned ‘Rolls plane 1910 fatal flight’. Unseen photos from one of Britain’s earliest aviation meetings, during which Rolls-Royce cofounder Charles Rolls died when his plane broke up mid-air, have been discovered by Lichfield auctioneer, Richard Winterton. The Edwardian album containing 96 original photographs, 28 from the 1910 International Aviation Meeting at Bournemouth, came to light following a house clearance in the Stafford area and are due to go under the hammer with Richard Winterton Auctioneers at The Lichfield Auction Centre on 6th November. Also included in the album coming to auction are 68 photographs featuring the crew of the SS Eugenie from 1906, taken at sea and in Constantinople, plus a personal logbook from the ship. The catalogue can be accessed online via www.richardwinterton.co.uk/auction-dates a week before the sale and viewing in person takes place at The Lichfield Auction Centre on Friday 3rd November.
