Greyhounds Join the Celebrations! By Lauren Hirst Charles III has now been crowned King of the UK and what a spectacular event. To mark the Coronation thousands of organisations across the country joined in the Big Help Out to “join in, help out, and make a change.” For several years now we have been able to showcase the work of the Trust by contributing to Citylife, so we were pleased to welcome the Editor, Kristen Lackajis, and her friend Chrissie on Coronation Bank Holiday Monday as part of the Big Help Out. Krissy and Chrissie met several of our volunteers who give up their time day-in-and-day-out, 52 weeks of the year to help the hounds in our care make the transition from racing dog to family pet and find loving homes for them. And of course, they met the hounds. I think it’s safe to say that they enjoyed their visit learning about greyhounds, the work of the Trust, and best of all, the hands-on time with the hounds, walking, grooming, playing etc. They particularly fell for the two little sisters, Mae and Penny and who wouldn’t? Two peas in a pod they are simply adorable and it would be fantastic to be able to find homes for them together. We know it’s a tall order with the cost-of-living crisis, but it would be a shame to split them up now. If you are looking for a ready pair of hounds, look no further, and get in touch. Following on from the Coronation weekend, we had our own special event, the Watford Gap Kennels Open Day on May 13th. What a great success it was too with a dog show, a variety of stall, an amazing donated cake to raffle, and a parade of homeless hounds who strutted their stuff to meet the public. We’re pleased to say that Trooper found his forever family as a result. An astonishing £2,000 was raised on the day, and given that we are virtually a self-funding branch of the national Greyhound Trust, is much needed and appreciated. There will be another Open Day in September so watch our Facebook page and website for details.
