LOCAL NEWS 6 ‘Smart’ Warrant Cards Issued Chung Tse with Mark Jones & Richard Cox A special presentation of ‘smart’ warrant cards has been made to environmental health, planning enforcement and licensing officers at Lichfield District Council. Officers who have enforcement powers carry warrant cards in order to identify themselves, and new technology means they can now reassure members of the public that they are genuine. When an officer approaches someone vulnerable, or if they are challenged as to their identity, they can invite the person to scan a QR code on the card which links to a hidden page on Lichfield District Council’s website listing all the officers, their photos, and warrant card numbers. The details can then be checked against those on the warrant card reassuring the person that the officer is who they say they are. Lichfield District Council is also considering issuing ‘smart’ identification to public-facing officers in other service areas. ....................................................................................... Suicide Prevention at Cathedral Lichfield Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBs), along with the Swadlincote branch, have organised a special memorial at Lichfield Cathedral on September 10th to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day. It will be the first ever memorial especially to remember people who have lost their lives to suicide that the Cathedral has held. The service will be about an hour long, with the Yorkshire Speak Their Name Quilt on display and a performance from the Yorkshire Sing Their Name Choir. The service will be opened by Angela Samata, a SoBs ambassador who made a Bafta nominated documentary called Life After Suicide. Cost of Living Sessions Two pilot drop-in sessions in Lichfield and Burntwood have provided welcome advice and guidance to residents concerned about the cost of living. The events, at District Council House on 27th July and Burntwood Leisure Centre on 3rd August, brought officers from Lichfield District Council and other service providers together for two-hour sessions. Officers supported residents with advice around housing benefit, council tax support, council tax exemptions, discounts and payment plans, debt and options to prevent homelessness. There was also guidance on how to recycle more and emergency food bank vouchers were on hand for residents in acute need. Staff from Job Centre Plus were present to advise about routes into employment, Citizens Advice South East Staffordshire provided wider debt advice and Support Staffordshire was there to assist anyone wishing to perform voluntary work. Local Hospice Receives Cheque Selina Hughes (pictured, far left), regional fundraiser for St Giles Hospice, recently received a cheque on behalf of the hospice for £775 from Lichfield Rotary Club on behalf. The money was raised with co-operation between the club and South Staffordshire Deaf Children's Society. The club raised funds by selling tickets for the yearly Duck Race held on a section of the Tamworth Canal in July. Some 3,200 plastic ducks hit the water at Hopwas at the annual race which was held in July. Presenting the cheque was Rotary Club President, John Glandfield, and Hopwas resident, John Williams. .......................................................................................
