Style | Home 31It was a build led by the view. The expanse ofLake Wānaka beckoned from the north, withRuby Island beautifully picture-framed by thedistant mountains. It would have been a shamefor those who dwelt within the house not to beable to see it from every room, so architecturaldesigner Pete Barham made it happen.Where traditionally there may have beenwalls, Pete and the client decided thereneeded to be three-metre floor-to-ceilingwindows in order to encapsulate the view.This means there is a bit of wizardry goingon – you can see right through the dwelling,from the hidden lounge area at the back of thehouse through to the central courtyard andthe front living room, out to the stage that isLake Wānaka.It’s a marvel for the unlearned, but, accordingto Pete, it makes good architectural commonsense.“You don’t want to be hidden from it[the view]; you want to arrange the buildingaround these things in order to have the viewthroughout. The east, west and south views arenondescript, with large retaining walls and otherhouses, so you have to do what you can tolook out to that north view,” he says.“A lot of structure and work has gone intothe front elevation to make sure it’s totallyglazed so every room and every space withinthe house can see the view.”The external use of materials also seemsto build on that view. The cold, solid metalexterior alludes to the mountains and thestillness of the lake, while the cedar timbercladding brings in the warmth of the naturalenvironment. The cedar softens the placeswhere you may engage with the building: thecentral courtyard and the battens near the frontentrance.“The battens to the entry tie it into theground and create a bit of separation from theoutdoor living,” says Pete.A perfect design for a holiday home, wherethe lure of the water will prove to be too muchto leave those kayaks in storage over winter.
