in Christian terms we may say is
where the Holy Spirit resides. So
really Holistic CBT isn’t unique but
it perhaps brings together different
strands in a unique way. It draws
from various CBT approaches,
Christian traditions and ideas
from psychosynthesis, Jungian
psychology and various other
sources. One of the key quotes that
underlies the model comes from
the English Christian writer, Evelyn
Underhill, who was also one of the
first woman theologians to lecture
in English universities. This quote
has become a key benchmark, that
I am seeking to live out, within my
own life-
“A spiritual life is simply a life
in which all that we do comes
from the centre, where we are
anchored in God: a life soaked
through and through by a sense
of His reality and claim, and selfgiven
to the great movement of
his will.”
So for those who want to know
more about Holistic CBT I will be
doing a half day teaching for ACC
on Thursday 14th October and I
will also be joining you for your
October conference next year.
One of my dreams as a child was
to write a book and this has now
happed with a book on Holistic
CBT published by Pavilion. There is
also the 16 week group programme
based on Holistic CBT called Free
to be Me published by Pavilion as a
manual that can be used to run the
course as well as being a resource
for offering individual therapy. For
those wishing to know more or
wishing to contact me, please visit
Hilary Garraway
About the author
Dr Hilary Garraway
is a consultant
clinical psychologist
and adult
psychology lead in
Enfield NHS mental health services
and prior to that worked in Early
Intervention in Psychosis teams.
Hilary has worked in a range of
settings including residential child
care, youth work, primary health
care and was with Youth With A
Mission for about ten years. During
her time with Youth with a Mission
she completed the YWAM Diploma
in Christian counselling and then
worked alongside Dr Mike Sheldon
(one of the founding members of
ACC) helping to provide counselling
training both in the UK and in
Uganda, developing the concepts
of whole person health care and
establishing a community project
based on some of these principles.
Hilary describes her spirituality
as Celtic contemplative and
worships both in a local church
and is part of Contemplative Fire.
She was chair of the National
Spirituality and Mental Health
Forum and the spirituality lead
for the British Psychological
Society and is a trustee for Whole
Person Health Trust. Her desire to
integrate her faith and work has
led to the development of Holistic
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
which incorporates spirituality
within CBT. Hilary has an interest in
ecotherapy and creativity and these
are also integrated within HCBT.
She is trained in spiritual direction
and is in the process of setting
up a retreat house which she will
be running with her husband, in
Grenada.
Tribute to
Syd Platt
In April very
sadly, we
learnt about
the death
of Syd Platt,
who many of
you will know
from his time
as South
East Rep and
a member
of ACC
Executive
and Board. Our thoughts
and prayers are with his wife
Marilyn and his family.
Tony Ruddle knew Syd for many
years and has paid this tribute:
I remember Syd from the very
first time at a Board gathering
when I arrived as the North East
Rep.
He made me feel welcome from
the outset and that care and
attention to people was one of
his gifts.
Another was his quiet spirit in
worship with careful thought of
what to bring and say as well as
having a deep conviction of God’s
presence and so was someone
who as a listener for what the
Lord was saying you paid heed
what he brought as comments
in both prayer and meetings.
He had a desire to see the
Regions grow and their
counsellors to develop in their
gifts and numerical strength.
With Clive Taylor they made a
formidable pair and were mainly
responsible for the Regional
setup that served us very well for
many years.
His faithfulness and tenacity
were greatly missed when he
had to not just step down form
the Board but the Region.
