Help a Neighbour
This year, because of
the pandemic, we were
unable to hold an event, but
instead observed the day from
the safety of our homes.
To commemorate Indian Independence Day,
the City of Parramatta is showcasing a range
of historical articles and stories for the
community to explore.
Western Sydney Awards for
Business Excellence
On Friday 6 August, I had the pleasure of
attending an online event where the finalists
for the annual Western Sydney Awards for
Business Excellence were announced.
These awards are a great way to recognise
and acknowledge the tremendous work done
by our local professionals, business leaders
and organisations.
More than 120 finalists have been shortlisted
across 18 award categories, which recognise
achievements in fields such as business, export,
sustainability, innovation, manufacturing,
culture, as well as many others.
The winners will be announced on Friday
26 November.
Check in on your neighbours in a COVID-safe way with
Council’s Help a Neighbour calling cards.
With the current strict lockdown restrictions in
place, many people in our community have
become isolated from their support systems
and we are doing what we can to help. Last
week we launched our Help a Neighbour
initiative, so people will be able to check in on
their neighbours in a COVID-safe way.
We know that people want to help, so we’re
inviting residents across the City of Parramatta
to leave a Help a Neighbour calling card in
the letterboxes of their neighbours and offer
a helping hand – whether it’s picking up
groceries and medical supplies or simply
having a friendly phone conversation.
The calling cards can be downloaded from
Council’s website and printed out, or copied
by hand, and left in a mailbox or under a
door. The initiative follows Council’s recent
announcement of a $2.9 million support
package to assist local households and
businesses impacted by the current COVID-19
lockdown.
National Science Week
In celebration of National Science Week,
which runs until 24 August, City of Parramatta
Council is offering a broad range of online
events and activities for science enthusiasts
of all ages.
Over the weekend, in partnership with the
Powerhouse Museum for Sydney Science
Festival 2021, Council presented online talks
by Australia’s favourite science guru Dr Karl
Kruszelnicki AM and Deadly Science founder
Corey Tutt. I even had the opportunity to ask
Dr Karl a question about Parramatta’s eels
(the animals, not the Rugby League team)
during his talk.
If you missed out, don’t worry, there’s still
some terrific stuff online, including a live
science-themed Story Time session with the
City of Parramatta Libraries on 19 August and
a science quiz hosted by the Parramatta
Heritage and Visitor Information Centre on
22 August.
Indian Independence Day
Indian Independence Day is celebrated on
15 August every year. This year marks the
commencement of the 75th anniversary of the
separation of India from the United Kingdom,
when the 1947 Indian Independence Act came
into effect.
The Indian community is an integral part
of the City of Parramatta, which boasts
the largest population of people of Indian
descent in Australia. Flag raising events form
an important symbolic component of Indian
Independence Day as India’s first Prime
Minister Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian
flag above the Lahori Gate to coincide with
passage of the Act.
LOCAL NEWS
Please don’t leave home
Premier’s desperate plea as COVID-19 cases continue to skyrocket
NICOLA BARTON
Merrylands, Guildford, and
Auburn have been labelled
as areas of “most concern” by
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, as the
state’s number of COVID cases continues
to reach record highs.
Ms Berejiklian sent a stern message to
residents – get vaccinated and don’t leave
your home “unless you absolutely have to”.
“Please know that if you are in these
areas you must not only take extra precautions
but make sure you come forward for
testing and stay home,” she said.
“These suburbs are of most concern in
the entire state.”
A state-wide lockdown was announced
over the weekend, aimed at minimising
movement to protect regional communities
from the escalating Greater Sydney
outbreak.
With vaccination seemingly the only
way out, Cumberland City Mayor Steve
Christou is urging residents to put their
arms out in August.
“I want to see our Local Government
Area have the highest vaccination rate in
A concerned NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian at a recent press conference.
the state. I want us to be the first area in
NSW so we can regain our freedoms,” he
said.
“We’re still waiting for the State Government
to accept our offer of vaccination
clinics in our facilities to speed the roll-out
of the vaccine.”
Cr Christou criticised the bungled
vaccine roll-out and outbreak response,
stating he feels there’s “no end in sight”.
“The response of the government and
enforcement of these draconian lockdowns
has been completely ineffective,
slow, and callous,” he said.
“Families have been destroyed financially.
The mental health of our residents
is now a real concern.”
The Federal Government announced
Australia will receive one million doses
of Pfizer, 530,000 of which are set to be
prioritised for young people (20-39-yearolds)
in the hardest hit regions of Greater
Sydney.
Walk-in vaccination clinics offering
AstraZeneca locally include the Holroyd
Centre (Waratah Room), Merrylands; the
Greystanes Community Centre, Merrylands;
Ted Burge Hall, Merrylands; Allan
G Ezzy Community Centre, Pemulwuy;
and the Guildford Community Centre,
Guildford.
The community is reminded that
under the current restrictions, residents
in both Cumberland and Parramatta
Local Government Areas must not leave
their suburb, including for work, unless
declared essential by the State Government’s
health orders. Increased fines are
now in play
Hazzard must face the music
Health Minister Brad Hazzard seems
constantly shocked, even offended, when
journalists question the NSW Government’s
response to the COVID-19 pandemic
and the ongoing lockdown.
He has been one of the worst government
performers during this crisis.
Nothing is his fault.
His bizarre, long-winded answers to
questions are embarrassing.
While a shake-up isn’t on the cards during
the lockdown, I can’t see how Hazzard
stays on as Health Minister.
Gladys Berejiklian must surely act once
the worst of the lockdown is over.
Spring has come early to Parramatta.
After weeks of being huddled inside, it’s
becoming pleasant to venture onto the
balcony again and soak up some sun. Our
local parks at day’s end are filled with a
steady stream of amblers. There is a hint
of fragrance in the air, reminding us of a
world to explore and a life to be lived.
Then I turn on the television to find
the Delta outbreak in NSW has spiked to
nearly 400 cases, up from 300 last week.
Now I really don’t want to be a killjoy.
Or rail about the pandemic all the way
until Christmas.
Yet I believe, and feel the weight of
health opinion agrees, that each day,
each 11am press conference, is a missed
opportunity to do more.
We could have locked down earlier and
harder – and we still could. Get everyone
to comply and get it over with. Easier said
than done, but there is ample evidence
of what has worked around Australia, so
why wouldn’t we at least try?
A tighter definition of essential retail.
Curfews and a ring of steel around Sydney
to protect the regions and our remote
indigenous population. Reinstating
JobKeeper – and offering $450 cash payments
to those forced to test and isolate
just like Victoria did.
By skimping on these measures, the
government has given the impression its
lockdown is not completely serious.
A stronger lockdown, supported by
stronger financial help to drive compliance,
is surely key to stemming case
numbers in Western Sydney – including
suburbs like Merrylands, Granville,
Guildford, Wentworthville, Pendle Hill,
Toongabbie and Girraween.
The availability of support needs to be
communicated in multiple languages.
It must be generous enough to dissuade
people from working when they have
symptoms.
But can we really expect much when
most small businesses in NSW are still yet
to receive COVID hardship and JobSaver
payments, promised weeks ago?
To appreciate how shambolic our state’s
handling of Delta has been, consider how
we reportedly rejected army personnel
from the Commonwealth back in July,
only to accept 300 troops and then 500
more.
Or the fact that the NSW Police Commissioner
is only now moving to fix poorly
drafted public health orders.
With the exception of journalists like
Andrew Clennell of Sky News who aren’t
afraid to ask the tough questions, isn’t it
incumbent on everyone to do more to
hold the government to account – from
the media to all opposition parties? That’s
not about politicking, but averting a catastrophe.
It’s harnessing our system to
force better outcomes.
In the meantime, let’s get vaccinated.
I’m 41 and eligible for Pfizer. Last week,
I spent hours online and couldn’t make a
booking until mid-October.
I’m now considering AstraZeneca and
waiting to hear more about Moderna.
Perhaps that experience resonates with
others who’ve encountered booking frustrations
or adopted an approach that’s
more wait-and-see.
We now have three vaccines approved
by the Australian Technical Advisory
Group on Immunisation (ATAGI). Any
should be considered effective, in conjunction
with advice from a GP. Yet even
here, the government could open more
state-run walk-in vaccination hubs to
take the pressure off GP clinics.
There are huge crowds at the vaccination
hub in Olympic Park each day. Our
region has some of the city’s lowest COV-
ID vaccination rates.
Please Premier: it’s high time mass vaccination
hubs were opened in Parramatta,
Defying lockdown blues
New cafe brings a smile to Ermington residents during ongoing pandemic
NICOLA BARTON
Opening a new business can be
challenging at the best of times,
let alone during lockdown.
But for the ambitious Ermington resident,
Su Mi Shin, this would not stand in
the way of realising her dream to open a
new trendy cafe in her suburb.
Cafe4TY7 is the latest, Instagram-worthy
breakfast and brunch spot, bringing
smiles to the people of Ermington during
this difficult time.
Even though the circumstances are far
from ideal, Ms Shin said the support and
positivity from the community so far has
been heartening to see.
“Living in Ermington I was always looking
for a brunch cafe and would always
go to Rydalmere or West Ryde instead, so
I thought why don’t I open my own?” she
said.
“When I bought the property everyone
told me I was crazy and I got a bit scared
but I just supported my decision and went
ahead with the renovations.”
After six months of refurbishments, Ms
Shin said it was really difficult to see the
COVID-19 situation escalating around her
but was determined to open as planned.
“Once they were done, we were in lockdown
but I couldn’t wait,” she said.
“I wanted to open for the workers I had
already interviewed and I wanted to open
for the community.”
Situated at 47 Boronia Street, Ermington
Cafe4TY7 offers a mouthwatering range
of breakfast and brunch options as well as
delicious coffee made from Pablo & Rusty
roasted beans.
The gorgeous cottage-like cafe will be the
perfect meet spot once lockdown is lifted,
but for now is only offering takeaway.
“We are so excited to welcome our
customers in-house once this lockdown is
over but for now we are just open for takeaway,”
she said.
“We are so grateful for all the kind people
that have popped in so far, Ermington
really has the loveliest people.
“We deserve a nice cafe spot for everyone
and I just hope everyone loves it.”
As Greater Sydney grapples with the
economic challenges of the COVID-19
pandemic and harsh lockdowns, now
more than ever is a great time to shop
small and support local businesses!
Cafe 4TY7 owner Su Mi Shin is hoping people support her new venture.
CITY COUNCIL
ADVERTISEMENT
A Message from Mayor Steve Christou
For more information visit, www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/arms-out-august
Arms out in August
We’ve launched a campaign this month called
‘Arms out in August’ with the vision to be the first
council area with 80% of our population vaccinated.
I’m calling on the State Government to take us up
on our offer to utilise our community centres. Just
give us the nurses and the jabs, and everyone in
our local government area the chance to make an
appointment as soon as possible to get vaccinated
so we can start rebuilding our community.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the state is in “a
race” to reach 6 million COVID vaccinations by the
end of August, so we’re very keen to contribute to
this to see some easing of restrictions at the end
of lockdown this month. We are tracking well as a
state to hit our 6 million target. We are now in the
40 per cent range in terms of people who have
Get vaccinated
Let’s get to 80% together.
had at least one dose. It’s a target my council and
community want to keep on track. The premier has
called it a race and we’re determined to sprint.
Having 80% of our community vaccinated is the
fastest and safest way out of this pandemic. I’m
really excited about this initiative. Let’s roll up our
sleeves and be that council from western Sydney
who smashed their vaccination targets. We’ve
created a dedicated page on our website about
how to book a vaccination, where you can get it
and when you’re eligible. We’ve also answered
some FAQs and have recorded vaccination
messaging in our city’s top languages.
A huge thank you to Councillor Scott Bennison,
Mayor Pam Palmer who has written to me following
their Extraordinary Council meeting on Monday
COVID-19 being experienced by our area and
resolved to reach out to us to establish the needs of
our community and see if they can assist us during
this difficult time.
They’re planning on approaching their local
group to distribute to residents in need in the
Cumberland local government area.
We appreciate the thoughtfulness and generosity
behind this gesture, especially coming from a
council that isn’t necessarily our neighbour. That’s
what happens when councils are not only in touch
with their residents, but looking out and lending
a helping hand to other communities too. We
appreciate the help and look forward to working
together closely on this initiative.
A great cause to get
behind
On the topic of giving, we’re launching a
charity register on our website where locals
can list any materials or supplies they’re
in need of and businesses and charity
organisations can display what they’re able
to provide and help with. At the moment it’s
just for essential goods and food only but it’s
a great way to activate the community spirit
and connectedness we’re all after during
lockdown.
From being one of the most vulnerable
societies across the state to taking a hit with
some of the most toughest restrictions on our
work and families, I encourage everyone to
get involved in our charity register to help lift
our city. After all, it is our sense of community
and compassion towards others which will
keep us safe and help us out of the pandemic.
New normal for
HSC students
NICOLA BARTON
A
flexible operating model for
schools across Greater Sydney
came into effect yesterday,
excluding areas of concern including
Parramatta and Cumberland.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian had
originally planned for all Year 12 students
to return to face-to-face learning this
week, with an ambitious vision for mass
vaccination and rapid antigen testing.
But as cases continued to grow and with
less than half of eligible Year 12 students
booking in for the jab, that plan soon
fizzled.
Secondary schools outside of the areas
of concern will now operate under an
updated COVID safety plan, to provide
opportunities for essential curriculum
delivery, wellbeing support and check-ins
for HSC students.
HSC students from the LGAs of concern
will remain learning from home, even
if schools they attend are outside those
LGAs.
All school assessments and trial exams
will be completed at home across all
Greater Sydney schools.
After facing similar disruptions in Year
11, the graduating class of 2021 are again
confronting the challenges of lockdown,
now with even more pressure as exam
season approaches.
Delany Catholic College Granville delivered
special gift packs to its Year 12 cohort
recently and held a virtual morning tea to
help brighten the day of students undergoing
exam-prep stress.
School Captains Naomi Habib and Brandon
Zaiter agreed that staying connected
with their teachers and peers was paramount
for their mental health.
“Learning from home is hard to manage
and it has been quite difficult to stay motivated
but our school has been amazing at
providing extra support,” Naomi said.
“It was great to get on the Zoom, get away
from school work and share how we are
going and our plans for next year,” Brandon
added.
Principal Paul Easton said the school
was doing everything it could to ensure
staff, students and parents felt supported.
“We are doing check-ins, buddy
programs, online afternoon tea sessions
and just communicating as much information
as we can to keep as much clarity
around this time as we can,” he said.
Dundas: Man allegedly assaults
COVID-19 testing site employee
A man has been charged after an essential
healthcare worker was allegedly
assaulted while working at a COVID-19
testing site in Dundas.
About 4pm on Monday, August 9, a
female staff member was performing
duties at a COVID-19 testing site at Kissing
Point Road, Dundas, when she was
approached by an unknown man who
was not wearing a mask.
Police have been told the man began
filming the 31-year-old worker on his
mobile phone, before verbally abusing
her about vaccinations.
The man then allegedly dislodged the
woman’s mask and punched her to the
head. Several people awaiting testing
exited their cars and assisted the woman.
The man fled the scene on foot and
officers from the Cumberland Police Area
Command attended and commenced an
investigation.
The woman was treated at the scene
and did not require hospitalisation.
Following inquiries, investigators from
Cumberland arrested a 50-year-old man
at a home on Shortland Street, Telopea,
just after 10.30am on Wednesday, August
11.
He was taken to Granville Police
Station, where he was charged with
‘common assault’, two counts of ‘possess
prohibited drug’ and ‘breach of the
public health orders’.
Guildford: Man killed in suspected
gang related shooting
A man was killed in a gang related
shooting in Guildford recently, with
police still hunting for the gunman
responsible.
About 11.10pm on Friday, August
6, emergency services were called to
POLICE SNAPSHOT
Compiled by Nicola Barton
Boundary Road, Chester Hill, following
reports shots had been fired.
Upon arrival, officers attached to
Cumberland Police Area Command
located an injured 25-year-old man.
He was treated by NSW Ambulance
paramedics at the scene, before being
taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable
condition.
A short time later, emergency services
attended Rhodes Avenue, Guildford,
following reports a man had been shot.
A man was located with a gunshot
wound and treated by paramedics,
however he died at the scene.
Crime scenes were established and
examined by specialist forensic police.
Detectives from the State Crime
Command’s Homicide Squad, assisted
by Cumberland, have established
Strike Force Shepherd to investigate the
circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police have confirmed it was a targeted
attack and believe it is linked to the
Alameddine organised crime network.
Baulkham Hills: Boy hurt after
falling from window onto concrete
An infant boy fell two and a half metres
from a window onto concrete at a home
in Baulkham Hills recently.
The boy was knocked unconscious
from the impact and sustained a serious
head injury.
NSW Ambulance paramedics provided
initial treatment to the patient, and
transported him to Gooden Reserve to
meet CareFlight’s clinical team.
CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW
Ambulance critical care paramedic
performed a clinical assessment on the
patient, before CareFlight’s specialist
doctor placed him into an induced coma.
The boy was conveyed to Westmead
Hospital in a critical condition.
Local Hero of the month
Keith Steele
Born at Willow Grove, Parramatta,
in 1944, Keith Steele went on to marry
his now wife Kathy before moving to
Toongabbie where he has lived for over
40 years.
Mr Steele is known for his love of the
environment and planting trees and has
worked tirelessly to make Old Toongabbie’s
Sue Savage Reserve a better place
for everyone.
Mr Steele has planted seeds that stand
as huge trees today and is very proud of
his babies; something he has been doing
ever since he has lived in the suburb.
During the drought he would water the
seedlings daily, pulling around 100 litres
of water in small buckets in his wheelbarrow
every day to save the seedlings.
Looking at the grown up trees now, he
says it was all worth it.
Over the years he has raised a number
of issues to the Council, to help improve
surroundings for the wider community,
one of them being the clean-up of Toongabbie
Creek.
Thank you, Mr Steele, for your care
for the environment, for supporting the
community and making it a better place
all-round.
COVID information not
up to standard
ADVERTISEMENT
Julie Owens Bulletin
Last week the ABC reported that official COVID
health information for multicultural communities
was almost two months out of date.
On 12 August, translations published on the Federal
Government’s Department of Health website still stated
that AstraZeneca was the preferred vaccine for Australians
over 50 – medical advice that changed back in June.
The Arabic translation didn’t mention the crucial advice
that all adults in Greater Sydney should get the vaccine,
whether AstraZeneca or Pfizer.
This isn’t the first time multicultural communities have
been given confusing or misleading information about
coronavirus. Last year the Department of Health was
caught using Google Translate for critical public health
information, with “nonsensical” results.
The Department of Health updated the translated
information within hours of the ABC story being
published, which begs the question – why didn’t they
just update the translations every time the health advice
changed?
Everyone deserves to be safe, and to be provided with
timely, accessible and accurate public health information.
When the government fails to get this information out in
other languages our culturally and linguistically diverse
communities get left behind.
The consequences for multicultural places like Western
Sydney are obvious. We’re home to most of the ‘local
government areas of concern’ and case numbers are still
rising.
Most Western Sydney residents weren’t old enough to be
eligible to get vaccinated until lockdown started and the
rules changed. Now many of us are relying on outdated
information to make decisions about whether or not to
get vaccinated. Unsurprisingly, Western Sydney has some
of the lowest vaccination rates in NSW and most of us are
still completely unvaccinated.
The Morrison Government’s repeated failure to
communicate coronavirus information to culturally and
linguistically diverse communities is part of a pattern.
In the 7th week of lockdown, my office is still taking
CALD communities have been calling for better coronavirus
information since the start of the pandemic (photo taken prelockdown)
calls from people trying to work out if they can claim
support payments because there have been so many
changes. And the Prime Minister’s failure to communicate
clear information about vaccines has left many in the
community confused and contributed to a concerning rise
in vaccine hesitancy.
Put simply, the coronavirus information we’re receiving
from this government is not up to standard.
Labor has been calling on the Morrison Government to
engage community leaders and improve coronavirus
information for CALD communities since the beginning of
the pandemic.
More than a year later our CALD communities are still
being left behind.
Supporting local jobs
Federal Government boosts employment program across the country
NICOLA BARTON
The Federal Government has
appointed a new Employment
Facilitator to help connect employers
and job seekers with employment
and training opportunities in western
Sydney.
The appointment is one of 51 across the
country as part of the Federal Government’s
$276 million Local Jobs Program
and comes as lockdowns cause significant
job insecurity in affected regions including
Parramatta and Cumberland.
The Local Jobs Program aims to increase
the capacity of the workforces through
supporting training and upskilling opportunities.
Jamie Petschy has been appointed
for western Sydney and will provide an
on-the-ground presence locally, working
with local businesses, training providers
and job seekers to identify labour market
challenges in the region.
Mr Petschy is a western Sydney local and
brings extensive experience in skilling
and employment initiatives to the role.
Minister for Employment, Workforce,
Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne.
Skills, Small and Family Business, Stuart
Robert, said the appointment is a key part
of the Federal Government’s Economic
Plan and works alongside financial
support available to businesses across
western Sydney.
“Western Sydney is facing a difficult time
right now, it is the powerhouse of Australia’s
national economy so this appointment
is particularly important,” he said.
“This appointment will put federal
resources into western Sydney and will
ensure as the community comes through
this difficult period there are dedicated
resources to help coordinate local job
creation efforts and help with a skills-led
economic recovery as we fight COVID-19.”
Assistant Minister for Youth and
Employment Services, Luke Howarth said
the appointment would help local young
job seekers who have faced disruption
over recent months.
“While it is vital we support businesses
and individuals today during this difficult
period, it is also important we help
connect, train and skill tomorrow’s workers,”
he said.
Liberal Senator for Western Sydney,
Senator Marise Payne, said the government
is focused on supporting western
Sydney as it fights COVID-19.
“The high level of investment that is
occurring in our region from government
and industry, centred around precincts in
Westmead, Parramatta, Badgerys Creek
and Penrith, will generate job opportunities
for decades to come,” she said.
“As we fight through this difficult period
it is important we get more locals to take
up training and jobs in construction,
advanced manufacturing, scientific and
technical services, including in aged and
disability care.”
NEW PODCAST TACKLES SCAMS, THEFT AND MORE
A new crime prevention podcast has
been launched, aimed at protecting the
community from scams and theft.
The five-part podcast, ‘Living Safely’ is a
community education program delivered
by Cumberland City Council in partnership
with NSW Police.
Protecting yourself from scams, securing
your home and vehicle and reporting
a crime are just a few of the topics which
will be discussed and available in six
languages.
Mayor Steve Christou said the content
was initially delivered as face-to-face
workshops pre-pandemic, but has evolved
into audio so it was more widely accessible.
“We want to raise awareness of crime
and safety issues and provide simple and
practical tips on how to minimise the risk
of becoming a victim of crime,” he said.
“A bit of knowledge and a few small
changes can make a big difference.
“Our residents need to know they can
trust governments and police and that
help is available if they need it.”
Listen to the podcast on Google, Apple,
Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
Copyright Agency’s $818,917 Cultural
The funding will support a diverse
navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sydney Story Factory will receive
$90,000 for its Year of Poetry project, an
after school program for young people
across western Sydney who write their
own book of poetry, which is later
published.
Westwords, a Parramatta-based literary
RELIEF FOR
HSC STUDENTS
The graduating class of 2021 has
experienced disruptions like no other;
facing the challenges of COVID-19
lockdowns in both their Year 11 and 12
studies.
With exam season approaching, the
pressure is on for Year 12 students in
Parramatta and Cumberland who are
preparing at home.
To take some of this anxiety away,
Western Sydney University (WSU)
announced it will again offer its HSC
True Reward early offer program to
ensure those whose studies have been
disrupted still have a fair shot at achieving
their higher education goals.
The True Reward program provides
students with an option to either use
their HSC results or their Year 11 results
as part of their university application
for an early offer to WSU.
WSU Vice-Chancellor and President
Professor Barney Glover said the HSC
True Reward program is providing
school leavers and their families with
much-needed peace of mind, during
what is another challenging year for
school students.
“With the evolving COVID-19 situation
continuing to have an impact on
schooling, particularly at the moment
in Greater Sydney, we want to be able
to relieve students of some of their
concerns or anxieties about disrupted
exam preparations and what this
means for gaining entry into their
preferred university course for next
year,” he said.
Don’t forget to
clean your teeth!
NICOLA BARTON
Many of us may find we let
ourselves go during lockdown,
whether that be our hair growing
out or overindulging in comfort foods.
But shockingly, new data shows that
many Australians are also skipping their
morning teeth clean, with 50 per cent
admitting to the unhygienic habit.
The survey by HCF Dental revealed more
than 2.7 million Australians admit to skipping
brushing their teeth daily during lock
down, and as many as 1.9 million people
were only prompted to brush their teeth
after putting on a mask and smelling their
own breath.
Whilst HCF Dental Parramatta are only
open for urgent or emergency appointments
during lockdown, they want to
remind locals of how they can keep smiling
during the pandemic.
HCF Dentist Dr Chris Ho said it was more
important than ever that people put extra
thought into their oral health.
“During lockdown a lot of our daily
life has changed, but one thing you can
control is your dental health,” he said.
“While we’ve been forced to slow down,
this is actually a great time to set up
healthy habits.”
Dr Ho’s top five tips for lockdown oral
health are:
Watch the snacks
“Every time we eat or drink, the digestion
process starts in the mouth, so if you
constantly snack you don’t give your saliva
time to work which could result in more
acid in the mouth and more sensitivity
and decay,” Dr Ho said.
Don’t forget nutrition
Dr Ho said food high in sugar can significantly
damage tooth enamel. “The best
drink for your teeth is water,” he said.
De-stress
“People who are more stressed may tend
to clench their teeth and get jaw aches, so
try some strategies to reduce stress for the
sake of your smile as well as your mental
health,” Dr Ho said.
Find a new daily routine
Dr Ho said people should be mindful
of skipping healthy habits just because
they’re no longer commuting to work or
leaving the house.
Make a plan to visit your dentist
Dr Ho recommended people make a
plan to visit their dentist when restrictions
ease.
Stepping up for charity
Can you do 10,000 steps a day? Challenge yourself to help raise vital funds
NICOLA BARTON
It’s that time of the year again to put
on your walking shoes for a worthy
cause, with registrations now open
for STEPtember.
The virtual challenge calls on individuals,
teams and organisations to take 10,000
steps per day for 30 days in an effort to
raise funds that will improve the lives of
people with cerebral palsy.
There are over 40 different activities that
can be converted to steps, helping participants
walk, swim, ride, wheel or spin their
way to their daily goal.
Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s General
Manager of Fundraising Lucy Jacka
encouraged people of all ages and abilities
to get a team together and take on the
challenge.
“STEPtember promotes individual
health and wellness, whilst uniting
participants in a common goal – to help
people with cerebral palsy live their best
lives,” she said.
“As a virtual fundraising event, people
from right across Australia can ‘step up’ to
the challenge and reach their daily target
STEPtember is back, raising money for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.
at their own pace, in their own way.”
STEPtember is a great way for people to
stay connected, get motivated and move
together for an important cause.
Cerebral palsy is the most common
physical disability in children, and in
Australia accounts for one in every 700
births.
Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term for a
group of disorders caused by injury to the
brain, most commonly during pregnancy.
It is a permanent, lifelong condition with
no known cure and can range from weakness
in one hand, to an almost complete
lack of voluntary movement.
People with significant physical disabilities
may require care 24 hours a day.
Funds raised by the campaign go
towards vital equipment, research,
therapy and services for people living with
cerebral palsy.
Aside from raising money for a good
cause, walking 10,000 steps a day is
recommended by health professionals to
promote a healthy lifestyle not just physically
but also mentally.
Particularly now with Greater Sydney
riding out its lockdown, getting outdoors
and walking either on your own or with
a friend can be a great and much needed
mood-booster during this time.
This year the STEPtember team have set
their sights on raising $11 million, their
most ambitious fundraising target yet.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Prepare for a Blue Moon … the second
Full Moon in Aquarius in a month!
Which will amp up your need for freedom,
independence and avant-garde
adventures. But don’t feel you have to
tackle a current project or problem on
your own. There are plenty of people
around who are happy to help. All you
have to do is sum up the courage to ask.
But too much reckless haste could lead
to an argument or accident, so slow
down and pace yourself (especially on
the weekend).
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
It’s time to retreat, review and restore
as the Full Blue Moon activates your
contemplation and seclusion zone. Enjoy
solo activities like meditation, yoga,
spiritual pursuits, journal writing and
long walks in nature. You’ll also be surrounded
by innuendo and intrigue.
What others say won’t necessarily be
what they mean, so make sure you read
between the lines to uncover what’s really
going on. The weekend is wonderful
for a relationship refresh or a social media
surprise.
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
This week peace-loving Venus encourages
diplomacy in relationships, while
Mars and Uranus boost energy, initiative,
innovative ideas and dynamic leadership.
Then the Full Blue Moon favours
friendship, creativity and following your
dreams. You’re feeling impatient but
avoid rushing business and financial
matters. With Mercury and Mars linking
up in meticulous Virgo in your job zone,
do your best to be mentally focused and
unusually fastidious at work. You know
you can do it!
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
The week starts with Venus (your power
planet) shifting into your job zone,
which bodes well for improved relations
with a colleague, client and/or customer.
Looking for employment? Don’t
under-estimate the promising contacts
you have within your professional peer
group. An unexpected opportunity
could also land in your lap via a friend
or former lover, so start networking now.
On the weekend a domestic project or
work matter comes to a surprising conclusion.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
On Friday your ruler Mercury (planet
of intelligence and communication)
forms a positive aspect with wildly adventurous
Uranus. It’s a wonderful week
to exercise your brain cells via study,
debate, teaching, reading, writing, public
speaking and generally expanding
your mind in all sorts of exciting new
directions. Your motto for the moment
is from witty Leo writer Dorothy Parker:
“The cure for boredom is curiosity. There
is no cure for curiosity.”
If you’ve been burying your head in
the sand, then a problem could come
to a head and demand to be addressed.
The planets encourage you to be direct
about dealing with challenges, especially
involving finances, intimacy and trust.
Definitely no side-stepping allowed! Do
your best to avoid being a snappy Crab
on the weekend, when the unpredictable
Full Moon magnifies mood swings
and heightens your emotional sensitivity.
Clear communication is the key.
With the fiery Sun still charging
through your sign, it’s time for largerthan-life
Leos to let your hair down, express
yourself and indulge your senses.
Be inspired by movie star Mae West
(born on August 17, 1892): “Too much of
a good thing can be wonderful.” But this
week there’s also a Sun-Jupiter opposition
and a Full Blue Moon. So avoid the
temptation to exaggerate, over-promise
and under-deliver – especially involving
personal relationships and business.
You won’t solve problems if you’re procrastinating.
Many Virgos will be full of
vim and vigour this week as you analyse,
strategise and mobilise! With proactive
Mars and clever Mercury (your patron
planet) linking up in your sign, it’s also
a good time to redefine the persona you
are presenting to the world. Be inspired
by birthday great, fashion designer and
business-woman Coco Chanel: “How
many cares one loses when one decides
not to be something but to be someone.”
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Venus vamps into your sign on Monday,
which boosts your natural Libran
charisma. But it also amps up your preoccupation
with perfection. So try to
focus on the evolving journey, rather
than the final destination. On the weekend,
the Full Blue Moon encourages
you to focus on friendships and make a
wish list of your goals for the future. Be
inspired by birthday great Madonna: “I
stand for freedom of expression, doing
what you believe in, and going after your
dreams.”
This week there may be some conflict
between domestic responsibilities and
professional expectations. You’re keen
to plunge into a personal project ASAP
but make sure you do your homework
first and don’t promise more than you
can actually deliver. You could also
experience problems with a work colleague
or family member who is jealous
of what you are achieving. Don’t let it
deter you! Just flash them a warm Scorpio
smile and encourage them to follow
their dreams.
The Sun/Jupiter opposition and the
Full Moon in Aquarius rev up your restless
side. Sagittarians are free spirits and
you could still feel frustrated by ongoing
social distancing rules and/or travel restrictions.
Don’t let it stop you from being
adventurous and taking on challenges
in creative and COVID appropriate
ways. Draw inspiration from birthday
great Madonna: “If I can’t be daring in
my work or the way I live my life, then I
don’t really see the point of being on this
planet.”
Slow down, cool down and calm down
Capricorn! Don’t make major mountains
out of minor molehills, and waste
precious time worrying about inconsequential
problems this week. Things
should run reasonably smoothly and,
if there are complications, then clever
communication will help you sail
through any temporary turbulence. The
weekend Mars/Uranus trine is terrific
for education, learning, teaching, creative
projects and cosmopolitan friendships.
A
great childcare
family: connecting
people young and old with
encouragement, support and
childcare centres can
foster the emotional health
future generations.
Childcare designed for the
Education isn’t one-size-fits
all: your child is unique – and
their context is too. Understanding
each child’s social
supporting their learning
within community enables
childcare services to create
Family involvement is at the
heart of great childcare. When
Why family involvement is critical
there are open, inclusive
and respectful relationships,
families can discover the kind
of care they want for their
children. Seeing parents and
carers as partners is better
for children, as we all work
together to help them flourish
and thrive.
Getting help from the
community
As the saying goes, “It takes
a village.” Developing strong
local ties can link childcare
centres with diverse community
groups and organisations,
meaning they can access more
resources. Uniting together
helps us become more than
the sum of our parts, offering
a more well-rounded experience
than if we each worked
alone.
MUSIC AND MAGIC
AT THE COLISEUM
EMILY FESZCZUK
Award winning singer-songwriter
Kate Miller-Heidke will
be going back in time for her
long awaited ‘Child in Reverse
Tour’ later this year.
The classically trained pop star will bring
some new material and old favourites to
Sydney Coliseum Theatre at West HQ.
Releasing her fifth studio album of the
same name last year, Kate told Parra News
she is ready to get on the road from the end
of September.
“It’s been a long time coming, this tour
was supposed to happen a year ago so I
can’t wait to play some of these new songs,
many of which we have never played live,”
Kate said.
While the pandemic is clouding the
planned shows, Kate is keeping her fingers
crossed everything goes ahead as planned.
“Just on a more basic level to be in a room
with real live humans is something I will
never take for granted again and I think it
will be pretty emotional for me,” she said.
Becoming a mother to her son Ernie inspired
Kate to write what she says is her
most “personal record”, with themes of
childhood.
“Something that was at the forefront of
my mind when I was writing these songs
is that you are quite vulnerable as a child
and what happens to you can then resonate
your whole life,” she said.
“Some songs on this record are about
childhood trauma which makes it sound
not fun to listen to but I promise there are
fun poppy songs on there.
“I am a fan of having sad lyrics but
wrapped up in a sort of feel good package.”
Being joined by a talented six-piece
band, Kate said the shows later this year
will include a mix of songs with some magic
thrown in.
“There will be an element of a greatest
hits tour, obviously we will play stuff off
the new record and people are requesting
things which is great so it will be a balance
of kind of old and new,” she said.
“For me playing live has been at the centre
of what I do and I love it… it is important
for me to be entertaining, to take people
on a journey, have some humour, and
story telling at the heart of it.”
Be entertained by Kate Miller-Heidke’s
unique musical style and experience the
drama she brings on stage for yourself.
Tickets are on sale now for the planned
tour.
Kate Miller-Heidke will be on at Sydney
Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill on Saturday,
October 16. Tickets are from $79.90.
To book or for more information call
the usual apps.
After We Fell Don’t Breathe 2
1 hour, 35 minutes 1 hour, 39 minutes
parra news » Tuesday, August 17, 2021
Just as Tessa makes the biggest
decision of her young life, everything
changes.
Revelations about her family, and
then Hardin’s, throw everything they
knew before in doubt and makes their
hard-won future together more difficult
to claim.
Can they overcome the challenges
before them?
‘After We Fell’ stars Stephen Moyer,
Mira Sorvino, Arielle Kebbel, Hero
Fiennes Tiffin, Josephine Langford
and Louise Lombard.
The movie is the third film in the
‘After’ film series and is directed by
Castille Landon.
‘After We Fell’ is due to be released in
Australian cinemas on September 9.
See these movies at...
The sequel to 2016’s ‘Don’t Breathe’ is
finally just around the corner – and it
could be the first movie you see after
lockdown (or one to have on the list
when it finally does lift!)
‘Don’t Breathe 2’ is set in the years
following the initial deadly home
invasion, where Norman Nordstrom
(Stephen Lang) lives in quiet solace
until his past sins catch up to him.
Hiding out for years in an isolated
cabin, Norman has taken in and raised
a young girl orphaned from a house
fire. Their quiet existence is shattered
when a group of kidnappers show up
and take the girl, forcing Norman to
leave his safe haven to save her.
‘Don’t Breathe 2’ is due to be released
on August 26.
AUTO
Celebrating an icon
LandCruiser turns 70; Toyota to release special-edition versions
NATHAN TAYLOR
Toyota’s legendary LandCruiser
turns 70 this month – an historic
milestone being celebrated in
Australia with the release of specialedition
versions of the rugged Land-
Cruiser 70 Series off-roader.
The platinum anniversary marks the
1951 Japanese debut of the Toyota BJ,
which three years later was renamed
LandCruiser – a brand that has been
proudly displayed on more than 10 million
vehicles sold worldwide.
The special-edition model – available in
single-cab, double-cab and wagon variants
– features bold styling enhancements
that complement LandCruiser’s rock-solid
off-road reputation and ability to conquer
some of the harshest terrain on the planet.
Just 600 examples of the 70th Anniversary
LandCruiser will be produced
– 320 double cabs, 200 single cabs and
80 wagons – available in three colours,
French Vanilla, Merlot Red and Sandy
Taupe.
Arriving in dealerships in September,
the Anniversary models are priced from
The popular Toyota LandCruiser is celebrating its 70th anniversary.
$80,050 (single cab), $82,600 (double cab)
and $78,500 (wagon).
Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales,
Marketing and Franchise Operations,
Sean Hanley, said Australian customers
had made LandCruiser the icon it is today
with 1.14 million having been sold locally.
“The LandCruiser nameplate has earned
legendary status in Australia, with a
decades-long track record of durability
and reliability in the toughest conditions
our country has to offer,” he said.
“The 70th Anniversary special-edition
is a tribute to the many LandCruisers that
came before it, helping Australians navigate
our harsh and rugged environment,
whether that’s through the desert, across
the mountains or deep in the forest.
“The icing on the cake as we celebrate 70
years of LandCruiser will be the all-new
300 Series that we will launch later this
year with the capability, performance and
comfort to take Australians further than
ever before.”
The LandCruiser 70th Anniversary
special-edition is based on the flagship
GXL grade and will be offered as a 76 Series
wagon and 79 Series single and double cab
chassis pick-up.
Haynes agrees to bat on
Sydney Thunder finalises preparations ahead of WBBL title defence
NATHAN TAYLOR
Aussie star Rachael Haynes will
lead Sydney Thunder’s title
defence after re-signing with the
club for the upcoming WBBL season.
“I just really enjoy playing for a club that
stands for something and is aligned with
the community in the way it is,” Haynes,
who enters her third season as a captain,
said.
“I’m really excited to be around for
another 12 months.”
The 34-year-old has been at the Thunder
since the beginning of WBBL and has been
an integral part of two titles, the first in
WBBL|01 then as captain for WBBL|06.
Last season’s success was made all the
more significant by the unique situation
of playing the entire tournament within a
bio-secure ‘bubble’ due to the pandemic.
“It was absolutely incredibly to be a part
of… an incredible achievement and I’m
looking forward to building on that experience
with this side,” Haynes said.
“We’ve got a core group of players there,
and I think the exciting thing for our team
is that I don’t think anyone has reached
their ceiling yet.
“I think we’ve got heaps of room for
improvement and players are going to
continue to get better.”
Haynes went to the top of the club’s
WBBL run-scorers list last season passing
the player she took over the captaincy from
in 2019, Thunder great Alex Blackwell.
Blackwell, now the Thunder’s WBBL List
Manager, said Haynes was a crucial signing
given what she means to the club.
“Rachael is completely committed, and
I think that’s what is quite inspiring to
people around her,” she said.
“She continues to foster a really strong
culture.
“All players, from my point of view, seem
to be very clear on their role, are highly
valued within the set up and are provided
with opportunities to develop. That’s what
I’ve seen Rachael do so well over the last
couple of years.”
The Thunder is scheduled to begin their
title defence against the Adelaide Strikers
at North Sydney Oval on Saturday, October
16, before renewing their crosstown
rivalry with the Sydney Sixers the next day
at the same venue.
For Haynes, to be back playing in front of
the Thunder Nation this season, would be
“really uplifting”.
Rachael Haynes will lead the Sydney Thunder again in the WBBL.
Star re-signs as club
eyes Finals finish
NATHAN TAYLOR
Bryleeh Henry enjoyed her first
season in the W-League so
much that she’s coming back
for more.
The Penrith resident, who recently
signed a new one-year deal with the
Western Sydney Wanderers, joined
the club last season after making
waves in the NSW National Premier
League Women’s competition with
Football NSW Institute where she
scored seven goals in 10 games.
The 18-year-old former Xavier
College student shone in her first
W-League season and scored her first
goals, a double against Melbourne
City, towards the end of the season.
Wanderers W-League coach Catherine
Cannuli said she’s excited to
work with Henry again.
“Bryleeh is a dynamite on the field
and her hard work over in the domestic
competitions over the last few
years has seen her reap the benefits in
the W-League,” she said.
“She is a passionate western Sydney
girl and has a wealth of talent that we
are looking forward to continuing to
develop.”
Henry, who was a member of the
Junior Matildas back in 2019, said she
was grateful for the chance to return
to Wanderland for another season.
“I was beyond grateful for the
opportunity to make my debut in the
W-League last season and even more
grateful to make it at my hometown
club,” she said.
“I love the Wanderers. They are a
family-based club and really take care
of their players. The culture at the
club is one I have never experienced
before and having such an amazing
culture really makes training every
day so much more enjoyable.”
The Wanderers missed out on a spot
in the W-League Finals last season,
finishing in sixth position with just
four wins to their name. In June, they
promoted club legend Catherine
Cannuli as the team’s head coach.
Henry said she’s ready to help to
take the Wanderers to a Finals berth
this upcoming season.
“I learnt so much and I felt I grew
massively as a player and a person
[last year],” she said.
“I know I still have a lot of work to
do as a player to get where I want to
be but I’m extremely excited to start
working under Catherine and keep
building from last season.
“We were so unlucky to just miss the
Finals stage last season, which was
disappointing, but we will build off
that and pick up where we left off and
keep improving to hopefully bring
the trophy home.”
The 2021/22 W-League season is
scheduled to kick-off on November
12, hopefully uninterrupted by the
COVID-19 pandemic.
