LOCAL NEWS
“Great loss” for our city
Petition launched after confirmation PCYC is set to depart Parramatta in April
ELLIE BUSBY
Locals are rallying around the
Parramatta PCYC after it was
announced the facility is set
to close.
The community were left shocked
after it was recently revealed the
Parramatta PCYC, which has
operated in Parramatta for over 60
years, will be shutting the doors of
its George Street address.
Radio 2GB reported the closure
was due to a “difficult financial
situation”, confirming it will close
down in April.
Since then, over 400 concerned
residents have already signed a petition
calling for the facility to remain
open in Parramatta.
“Parramatta PCYC has been an
integral part of our community for
years, fostering positive relationships
between police and youth
while promoting health and wellbeing,”
the petition said.
“It’s more than just a club; it’s a
place where friendships are formed,
skills are honed, and lives are positively
impacted.
“We urge the relevant authorities
to reconsider this decision. Let us
The community are calling for the Parramatta PCYC to remain open.
keep Parramatta PCYC open for the
benefit of all current members as
well as future generations who will
undoubtedly reap its rewards too.”
City of Parramatta Councillors
have also voiced their frustration at
news of the closure.
“To only be given six weeks to
vacate a premises, I say shame on
you PCYC head office,” Our Local
Community Councillor Michelle
Garrard said.
“The PCYC has served in
Parramatta since 1962 and was
initially at Macquarie Street before
shifting to Hassall Street, its home
for decades, before it was sold
for $31 million to make way for a
multi-storey tower, [which] meant
that headquarters had to relocate to
George Street in 2016.”
Garrard added that with the
current youth crisis, it’s important
that the only primary stakeholder
in Parramatta that supports youth
remains open.
“Not in every child’s instance, but
a lot of kids that go through there
have had problems at home and
haven’t had stability. What they get
in relation to leadership, mentoring
and the programs that the PCYC
offer do more than a program,” she
said.
“These kids without the PCYC
could be going into juvenile detention.
PCYC give them a way out and
offer programs to try to get them
back on track.
“This is going to be a great loss to
Parramatta.”
Labor Councillor Sameer Pandey
said Parramatta PCYC is “such an
important service.”
“I do want to thank the volunteers
and the board at PCYC Parramatta
for the work that they have been
doing, 5,000 registrations and
subscriptions that they have, 5,000
youths have been registered with
the PCYC Parramatta,” he said.
“They have been around for 62
years and for the PCYC head office
to give them six weeks notice to shut
down this operation is appalling.”
The PCYC did not respond to a
request for comment.
We must always celebrate seniors
As the annual Seniors Festival (previously
Seniors Week) lands in New South Wales, it’s
an important time to reflect on those who
have contributed so much to society throughout
their lives.
Our seniors are such integral members of the
community, and this month’s celebrations are
well deserved.
These are people who have lived through extraordinary
times. They have forgotten more
than most of us have learned, given their
worldly experience and length of life lived.
And they still have so much to offer, whether
that is to the family unit, to the workforce or
as volunteers, which is something I know so
many of them do.
It can be so easy to dismiss older generations;
to consider their opinions and thoughts
out-dated.
But we would be far better off listening and
learning than we would dismissing.
To all the seniors out there, enjoy this month;
which is very much about you, and thank you
for all you have done.
Is Parramatta the roach capital?
The cockroach capital.
At first, they were microscopic – and manageable.
It was usually just one or two per day,
scurrying around the sink as I returned home
in the evenings and switched on the lights. Invariably,
you had to have a thick book or rolled
up newspaper handy.
Then they grew slightly bigger. Feasting on
crumbs along the kitchen benchtop or around
the stove. You might see one in the bathroom
at night, inching up the shower walls or appearing
from behind the cupboard.
A couple of weeks ago, they became more
audacious. No longer limited to the witching
hours, it became common to see a flicker
across the walls as I ate breakfast.
One morning I awoke to find a near-corpse
on the floor, probably reeling from having ingested
the remains of some old poison. It was
jet black, the size of one of those old matchbox
cars, turned on its back with legs writhing. Absent-mindedly
I left it there, thinking it wasn’t
long for this world.
To my horror, upon returning home it had
vanished from the spot entirely, only to suddenly
re-emerge flipped over and reenergised
as I was tucking into dinner. It crawled into a
shoe in the living area. I threw the shoe onto
the balcony and smashed it there.
“Don’t you find there are a lot of cockroaches
inside our building at the moment?” a resident
on the same floor inquired of me casually
in the lift one day. “I find I’m killing them all
the time.”
Ruefully, I had to admit our apartment block
Index
has a problem. Right now, roaches are all over
the bin room. Back inside the unit, each swish
of my morning toothbrush comes with trepidation.
I don’t dare pull out the dishwasher or
look behind the fridge.
In a way, it’s a peculiarly Sydney curse. A
report in 2020 found Sydney to be the “cockroach
capital” of Australia, with household
incidence more than 19 per cent higher than
the national average. Last year, an inner-city
renter claimed that roaches fell on his face as
he slept.
But if Sydney is the cockroach capital, Parramatta
could be the primary operating headquarters.
Whenever I exit the station at night,
I see ones that are simply enormous on the
ground that would have you tempted to dial
triple-0 if they appeared in your house or
apartment.
It’s not surprising given our city has endured
one of the muggiest summers in living memory.
One of consistently high temperatures,
where clusters of buildings reverberate and
absorb heat during the day, while airborne
moisture provides a perfect breeding ground.
This is particularly so for German cockroaches,
which have a short reproduction cycle,
mating prolifically in a matter of weeks. In fact,
I have read that a single female cockroach can
lay up to one million eggs a year.
The density of apartment living across Parramatta
and Cumberland only accentuates
the problem. Having so many kitchens, bathrooms
and communal waste facilities close
together – moist environments with scraps
Horoscopes..............................................18
Entertainment................................19-29
Business Directory.....................30-31
of food – promotes proliferation and ensures
that any infestation affects large numbers of
people.
Perhaps the next-door neighbours, or those
in the unit above or below, are not putting the
bins out, or otherwise unhygienic and gross. It
is an externality of apartment life, impossible
to quantify. And obtaining action from landlords
is infinitely tougher for tenants and subtenants,
unsure of their rights.
Cockroaches are adept at hiding in small
cracks and crevices. They are capable of morphing
and resisting against the harshest pesticides.
So, pre-emption is the best defence.
Store food in sealed containers. Avoid leaving
dirty dishes in the sink. Clean homes regularly
and empty rubbish bins. Crack down on
clutter. Seal gaps around sink areas and check
kitchen tiles. Clean underneath the fridge,
stove and toaster.
Try not to leave stacks of paper lying around
like newspapers, boxes and mountains of supermarket
bags.
One other rule of thumb. Seeing one cockroach
always indicates multiple. Seeing multiple
means there are nests to be zapped and an
epic infestation at hand.
The other day I found a small roach resting
among my kitchen plates.
Now I rinse every utensil twice over before
having a meal. With the humidity likely to last
well into autumn I’ve had enough and contacted
strata.
The pest controller is coming Friday. It’s going
to be a long couple of days.
Gender equity top priority
Council promises to invest in local women
ELLIE BUSBY
Cumberland Council has
promised to continue
to invest in women, as
it moves to develop a strategy
to achieve gender equity in the
local area.
With International Women’s
Day taking place last week,
Council has reaffirmed its
commitment to “count her
in” after a motion to establish
a gender equity strategy was
supported at the latest meeting.
Labor Councillor Diane
Colman, who put forward the
motion, said there is clearly still
a long way to go in achieving
gender equity in Cumberland.
“For every $1 a man makes,
women earn 78 cents, over the
course of a year that difference
adds up to $26,393,” she said.
“This gender pay gap is having
a long-term, material effect
on women’s lives, women’s
economic safety and security
are intrinsically linked to their
physical safety and security.
“The importance of financial
independence in enabling
women to escape abusive relationships
cannot be overstated.”
The strategy intends to promote
partnership opportunities
within the community and
other levels of Government to
ensure equitable opportunities
regardless of gender, as well as
economic security and building
safety and respect in the community.
It would also focus on making
sure Council as a workplace
provides equitable opportunities
for all employees and maintains
an organisational culture,
which supports gender equity
and respect. The preparation of
the strategy would require an
additional budget allocation of
around $25,000.
Colman added that creating a
gender equity strategy ensures
Council consciously considers its
aims within an equality framework.
“Investing in women isn’t just
the right thing to do, it’s the smart
thing to do,” she said.
Merrylands West resident
Joshika Naidu, who works in the
male-dominated tech industry,
said the motion resonated deeply
with her.
“I’ve experienced first-hand
that true equality stems from
gender equity,” she added.
“From the statistics and
personal experience, I would like
to dispel the misconception that
advocating for gender equity is
an anti-male stance.
“In championing this motion
we embark on a journey with
far-reaching benefit, especially
from an economic stand-point.”
However, some Councillors
said Council already has a strong
gender equity policy, declaring
that an additional strategy was
not needed.
“Here we are six months out
from an election, trying to
create an issue that is not here in
Cumberland City Council,” Our
Local Community Councillor
Steve Christou said.
“We already have an extensive
and exhaustive gender equity
policy, which we already do.
“Nobody wants to see women
in life, especially in Australia, not
get a fair go, but what we won’t
cop is a portrait being displayed
that somehow Cumberland is not
getting a fair go.”
“Game-changer” for the west
The concept design of the proposed transformation of the Camellia riverside.
ELLIE BUSBY
A
bold new proposal
from landowners
could see Camellia
and the Rosehill Racecourse
site transform into
45,000 new homes and a
man-made beach.
The Rosehill-Camellia
Landowners Alliance
(RCLA) has revealed its
$25 billion vision for a
new community on the
amalgamated 90-hectare
site – calling on the NSW
Government for support.
The RCLA members
include Wentworth Properties,
Billbergia, Abacus and
the Australian Turf Club.
The masterplan intends
to unlock access to the
Parramatta River waterway
with a new ferry wharf, light
rail, and Metro stations, all
by 2050, as part of a renewed
pitch to convert the Rosehill
Racecourse into a new minicity.
The proposed plan will
also see a town centre developed
as the heart of 45,000
“critically-needed” new
homes – including affordable
housing – with retail,
education and commercial
space alongside community
facilities, public open spaces
and new infrastructure.
The new homes would
provide accommodation for
100,000 people and generate
over 15,000 jobs.
Development Director of
Billbergia Rick Graf said
the proposal would enable
Parramatta to “fulfil its
destiny” as a global city
alongside Sydney.
“This is a once-in-a-century
opportunity to plan
strategically for an entire
‘city-within-a-city’, while
also unlocking access to
the riverfront – activating,
remediating and beautifying
what is now a former
industrial wasteland,” he
said about Camellia.
“For scale, the combined
site is four times larger than
Barangaroo and will accommodate
100,000 people,
generating over 15,000 jobs.
“It will be the largest
development in the history
of the Central River City and
is a total game-changer for
western Sydney.”
An artist’s impression of the proposed Camellia-Rosehill
Town Centre.
The proposal also reveals
plans for new public spaces,
including a 350-metre-long
beach, opening up an
additional 1.5 kilometres
of waterfront along the
Parramatta River.
The new metro station
would also “catalyse a
three-minute economic
super-hub in western
Sydney,” enabling residents
to commute within minutes
between Westmead,
Parramatta and Camellia.
RCLA said transport infrastructure
like Parramatta
An artist’s impression of the proposed Camellia-Rosehill
Town Centre.
Light Rail and the Metro
West provides an opportunity
to develop a plan that
considers the site’s strategic
role over the next 50 years.
That includes the longterm
social infrastructure
needed to support major
housing supply and contribute
to the status of the
Central River city.
The Alliance members
are now calling on the State
Government to collaborate
with the Landowners and
Council to develop a “new
and visionary masterplan”
to optimise the site.
“The new Masterplan
needs to be a highest-level
collaboration between
Government and the private
sector investors and must
have the best international
expertise to crystallise
the broader vision,” Graf
added.
Asbestos-riddled hall set to fall Asbestos investigation rolls on
ELLIE BUSBY
The fire damaged Dundas Scout Hall.
ELLIE BUSBY
The fire damaged Dundas Scout Hall,
which has been confirmed to contain
high risk asbestos, is finally set to be
demolished.
Parramatta Council has granted Scouts
NSW approval to demolish the building,
located at 42A Yates Avenue, Dundas Valley,
at a recent Local Planning Panel meeting.
An Asbestos Material Survey was submitted
with the Development Application,
confirming traces of friable and non-friable
asbestos had been located throughout the
building.
But a Parramatta Council report said it
“has not identified any fundamental issues
of concern”.
“The application along with the Detailed
Site Investigation submitted by the applicant
was reviewed by Council’s Environmental
Health Team Leader who determined that
satisfactory evidence has been provided
that the site can be made suitable for the
proposed development, subject to conditions
of consent,” it read.
Following demolition of the hall, further
investigation into the potential contamination
of the soil will be required for any
development on the site.
The Dundas Scout Hall was badly damaged
by fire in December 2022, making it the
second time in one month that the muchloved
facility was targeted by arsonists.
Although the hall hadn’t been used by
an active Scout group for many years, it
was often used for hire. At the time of the
incident, the hall was being utilised by The
Manning Foundation, who was using it as a
space to store items like food and blankets to
give to those in the local area.
The NSW Environment
Protection Authority
(EPA) has reached the
end of the supply chain as
it traces asbestos contaminated
mulch, with a total of
four local sites confirmed to
be positive.
Although the initial phase
of supply chain testing is
complete, the EPA said its
criminal investigation will
continue to explore multiple
lines of inquiry.
Over the past eight weeks,
around 6,500 tonnes of
mulch has been tracked
down, assessed and tested,
with nearly 1,200 samples
taken for analysis.
At this stage, 75 sites have
returned a positive result for
asbestos in mulch, with all
sites found to have low levels
of asbestos contamination.
Locally, the presence of
bonded asbestos has been
found in mulch on the
Carlingford to Parramatta
shared path in Telopea, as
well as in a garden bed of
the Parramatta Light Rail
project, also in Telopea.
Four samples taken at two
landscaped sites across the
Prospect Highway Interchange,
between Prospect
NSW EPA is continuing its investigation into traces of
asbestos located in the greater Sydney area.
Photo: Melinda Jane.
and Blacktown, have also
returned positive results for
traces of bonded asbestos.
All sites were fenced off to
prevent any public access
while a remediation plan
was developed.
A construction site at Westmead
Children’s Hospital,
which is not open to the
public, has also tested positive
for asbestos.
The sites have been
inspected by a licensed
asbestos assessor and
samples collected for analysis.
The NSW Asbestos Taskforce
said it will continue
monitoring the situation
while moving to broader
consideration of legacy
asbestos. The NSW Government
has also announced
it will move to tighten
regulations and strengthen
penalties for a range of environmental
crimes.
Quite a number of hospitality businesses in western Sydney are closing. Along with
them go jobs, hopes and dreams. We know times are tough out there, but it’s time
to get out and support our local restaurants and cafes as much as we can. We don’t
realise how much we miss them until they’re gone.
We’re still not sure why they did it, but the AFL’s Opening Round can’t really be considered
anything less than a success after some impressive crowds over the weekend.
As much as it seems strange to have no matches in Melbourne on the first weekend
of the season, the crowds in NSW and QLD were impressive.
One of Cumberland Council’s most
popular events, the Ramadan
Street Festival, is set to return to
Auburn this Saturday.
The annual Ramadan Street Festival is
promising to provide locals with an “authentic
outdoor Ramadan dining experience” to
mark the beginning of the holy month.
Closing Auburn’s main street for the night,
the event will feature a lineup of food trucks,
street food stalls and local restaurants for
visitors to enjoy.
Visitors can expect to enjoy diverse food
options from stalls like Dapto Hotdogs, EL’s
Fried Chicken, Sydney Falafels, Lokma-
Nia, Dippin’ Dots Ice cream and charcoal
chicken skewers from Decan Flavours.
Mayor Lisa Lake said the Ramadan Street
Festival brings the community together.
“Ramadan is an important holy month
where our community members come
together to break their fast and share in the
spirit of peace and kindness,” she added.
“The Ramadan Street Festival holds a
special place in Council’s calendar, offering
a unique chance for the community and
visitors to connect, socialise and experience
the magic of Ramadan under the stars
within the streets of Auburn.”
The ninth month of the Islamic lunar
calendar, Ramadan is a sacred and holy
month observed by Muslims around the
world as a period of fasting, prayer, reflection
and community.
During this time, Muslims fast from dawn
until sunset, abstaining from food, drink,
smoking and sinful behaviours. The fast is
broken at sunset with a meal called Iftar,
which sees families and communities come
together to share in the feast.
Encouraging both locals and visitors to
head down to Auburn this Saturday, Lake
said the festival shows the best of the local
multicultural community.
“Auburn is one of the most multicultural
communities in Australia,” she said.
“It’s a melting pot of cultures and
the Ramadan Street Festival showcases
some of the best of our multicultural
community.
“We welcome everyone from across
Sydney to join us in discovering the diverse
food, shops and culture that makes Auburn
special.”
The festival will run from 7pm to midnight
on Saturday, March 16. Although limited
street parking will be available, visitors are
being encouraged to catch public transport
to the event.
Powerhouse will unveil a new
state-of-the-art building
housing its internationally
renowned collection and supporting
conservation, research, exhibitions
and learning programs when
it opens Powerhouse Castle Hill in
North West Sydney on March 23
and 24, 2024.
The opening weekend will feature
free, family-friendly programming.
This will include the premiere of
First Nations exhibition ‘Alchemy’,
artist talks, behind the scenes architectural
tours and performances by
musicians, DJs and dancers including
First Nations Jannawi Dance
Clan, Sydney Youth Orchestra and
one of Australia’s oldest lion and
dragon dancing troupes, Jin Wu
Plus food, masterclasses and
programs presented by TAFE NSW.
Designed by Sydney-based
Lahznimmo Architects and built by
Australian construction company
Taylor, the $44 million facility will
be used for the display, storage
and conservation of the more than
500,000 permanent objects in the
museum’s collection.
This is the first time in the museum’s
140-year history that the entire
collection will be stored in one
Jannawi Dance Clan will be part of the opening celebrations.
location and co-located alongside
conservation, curatorial and collection
management staff.
At more than 8,000sqm, Powerhouse
Castle Hill is significantly
larger than the basement storage
that was previously used by the
museum in the Harwood building
in Ultimo.
The building boasts a “visible
store,” a six-metre high and 20m
long window allowing public viewing
into the 3,000sqm Very Large
Object storage area.
Powerhouse Castle Hill also
features flexible spaces for
education and public programs,
workshops, talks, exhibitions and
events as well as working spaces for
academic researchers, scientists,
industry partners and the public.
The opening of the building is the
latest evolution of the site, which
was originally a botanical research
station for the museum after staff
planted many Eucalypts and
Melaleuca trees in the 1940s. These
trees were used for Eucalyptus oil
experiments and distillation in
the early days of the Powerhouse
Museum. From the late 1970s, the
Powerhouse started storing some of
its collection at Castle Hill. In recent
years, this facility became shared
storage known as the Museums
Discovery Centre for collection
objects from the Powerhouse, the
Australian Museum and Museums
of History NSW. The new Powerhouse
Castle Hill building sits
alongside the Museums Discovery
The expansion of Castle Hill is
an integral component of the $1.2
which includes the new flagship
museum currently under construction,
The Sun, Venus, Saturn and Neptune
are all stimulating your cash zone.
Letting finances take their own course
seems tempting but you need to keep
up to speed with money matters. If you
increase your financial literacy then it
will pay off handsomely further down the
track, as you replace short-term whims
with wise long-term strategies. With
Mars visiting your sign (until March 22)
you need to be proactive about personal
projects and future plans.
Perceptive Pisceans have an uncanny
sixth sense. And you’ll be using it in
spades as the Sun, Venus, Saturn and
Neptune all meander through your sign.
You’ll feel increasingly inspired, compassionate
and/or spiritually inclined. So
it’s the perfect time to break out the
paint brushes, dance in the moonlight,
help someone in need or explore a
new spiritual practice. Sunday’s Sun/
Neptune hook-up particularly highlights
romance, creativity and healing.
Are you confused about which path
to follow? Pay close attention to your
nightly dreams. They are full of creative
ideas and symbolic wisdom that can
lead you in the right direction. Painters,
artists, writers, musicians, and performers
will feel particularly inspired as the
Sun, Neptune, Venus and Saturn boost
creativity and productivity. Some Rams
will bump into a lover from the past. But
do you really want to travel down that
rocky road again?
Don’t become so focused on the busyness
and miniature of day-to-day life
that you lose sight of the bigger picture.
Look beyond the horizon Bulls! Being
proactive at work, setting short-term and
long-term goals, dreaming big dreams,
and socialising with your extended peer
group are the secrets to a successful
week. Beyond that, your motto for the
future is from birthday great, singer-songwriter
James Taylor, “The secret
of life is enjoying the passage of time.”
There’s a positive Mercury/Pluto link
and no less than seven planets are activating
your career and aspirations zones.
So it’s time to have ambitious dreams
and set humongous goals. Stop procrastinating
and instead, ask yourself an
important question, “Do I need to tweak
my dreams to make them a more honest
reflection of the real me?” Your motto is
from entertainer (and birthday great)
Liza Minnelli, “Don’t listen to anyone
who doesn’t know how to dream.”
Trusting your intuition and helping
others are the main themes this week.
It’s time to think philosophically and
feel an essential part of a wider international
community. Your thoughts
are important, your words matter, and
your actions can make a real difference.
Draw inspiration from fellow Cancerian,
Princess Diana, “Carry out a random
act of kindness, with no expectation of
reward, safe in the knowledge that one
day someone might do the same for you.”
The Sun (your patron planet) links up
with Neptune in the gentle, mystical
sign of Pisces. So slow down and calm
down Cats! Tap into your imaginative,
intuitive, spiritual side. Dream a special
dream that will propel you into a magical
future. And aim to surround yourself
with family and friends who support
your aspirations and encourage your
creativity. Your motto is from birthday
great, Albert Einstein, “Imagination is
more important than knowledge.”
Monday favours study, research,
intense conversations and solving
problems. Attached Virgo – is your
relationship stuck in a time-warp where
it’s been difficult to move forward? This
week’s stars bring a shift in perspective,
as you view your partner in a promising
new light. Single Virgo – are you sick and
tired of looking for love? Your Prince or
Princess is waiting in the wings, but you
may have to kiss a few frogs before you
finally find them!
Venus (your ruling planet) shifts into
Pisces, so you’ll be at your flirtatious best
as you charm the cynics and dazzle the
doubters. If you’re attached, it’s time to
rejuvenate the relationship with some
good old-fashioned romance. Single
Libra – you could meet your soul mate
while you’re doing routine daily chores
like grocery shopping or walking the
dog. But be careful your luxury-loving
urge to splurge doesn’t spin out of control
via a spontaneous spending spree.
Monday’s Mercury/Pluto link is good
for strategising, organising work projects
and planning the domestic week ahead.
For the rest of the week, you’ll feel more
inspired than usual as four planets
stimulate your self-expression zone. Use
the power of your imagination to solve
problems and soar into higher realms of
creativity. Your motto is from birthday
great Albert Einstein, “Logic will get you
from A to B. Imagination will take you
everywhere.”
Family matters and domestic DIY
projects are favoured this week, as lucky
Venus starts transiting through your
home zone. Can you figure out a problem
that has got loved ones stymied? They’re
expecting you to come up with the goods
so get creative! For many Sagittarians,
good fortune and family are linked.
You’ll also find the more time and effort
you put into local travel, education,
communication, and social media, the
more successful you’ll be.
Financial matters and family conversations
are favoured on Monday, and
Sunday is a great time for a romantic
rendezvous. Venus joins the Sun, Saturn
and Neptune in your neighbourhood
zone on Tuesday, so the rest of the week
is wonderful for fostering positive feelings
within your local community. Your
motto is from fellow Capricorn, Michelle
Obama, “The difference between a
broken community and a thriving one is
the presence of women who are valued.”
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
CAMPBELL
GOES OLD
SCHOOL
CASSIDY PEARCE
Despite releasing the album
David Campbell has
fallen back in love with
‘Good Lovin’’.
After releasing his most recent album
‘The Saturday Sessions’ in 2021,
Campbell was touring Australia doing
swing shows, keeping his foot in
the touring game primarily for the
sake of promotion.
But, when asked to do a show at
Penrith Panthers in 2022, he made
a game-changing decision to switch
it up by bringing back ‘Good Lovin’’.
“I was speaking to my musical director
who’s been with me for 22
years, and we were going through
stuff and started talking about a oneoff
corporate gig where we did 20
minutes and just pulled out some of
these old songs again, and I was like,
‘That was really fun doing up-tempo,
I really don’t want to just do swing
music again – can we just do something
different?,” he said.
“We pulled out this old setlist and
gave it a bit of a zhuzh, put some
newer stuff in and some stuff that
we’d learned along the way since
we’d done that tour, and then Mahalia
[Barnes] was like, ‘I’m around,
do you want me to jump on in?’, because
she did that show with me at
the time.”
For Campbell, realising he could
tour without the pressure of promotion
made a world of a difference.
“I realised that was why I wanted
to do shows in the first place – it was
all about having fun, getting together
with people, and just doing great
music with great people and the audience
going off,” he said.
For the last two years, Campbell
has been doing a version of the show
he originally toured after the 2008
album’s release, newly titled ‘Good
Lovin’ & More’, though he promises
it isn’t getting stale, having constantly
made changes since.
“It just evolves, it’s constantly moving.
Sometimes going in, I might say
to [my musical director], ‘I don’t
know about that song, let’s try something
else this week’,” he said.
“We can be more organic, whereas
before, we only had that album in
2009, and that was all the songs we
had done. Now, we have another 15
years of songs and touring experience
where we can say, ‘That didn’t
work’, or ‘Maybe that audience
needs this’.”
Having originated the show here,
Campbell said he can’t wait to bring
it back to Penrith in the EVAN Theatre
on March 23.
“The audiences there have a real
sense that they are here to go off,
they’re here to listen, they’re here
to laugh, they’re here to cry, they’re
here to party,” he said.
“It always makes me happy
playing that room, and
I know it really, really
well. Sometimes you
have the luxury and
the privilege of playing
somewhere over
and over again, and Panthers
is one of those places.
I really enjoy playing it, and
the audiences never disappoint
me.”
With this show a part of
Great Southern Nights,
Campbell is encouraging
everyone to get out and
about, not just to his show,
but to as many as humanly
possible.
“Go out and see a lot
of bands, go out and see
bands you haven’t seen in
a while, see an artist maybe
like me that you’ve never
seen,” he said.
“That’s what’s been really
fun, and what’s fun about this
[Great Southern Nights] concept
– not only is it great for
Australian music, it’s great for
punters.”
David Campbell’s ‘Good
Lovin’ & More’ will be on at
Penrith Panthers on Saturday,
March 23 at 8pm. Tickets are
$74.50. For more information
Ballerini to host CMT Awards
Kelsea Ballerini (pictured below) is back as
host of the CMT Music Awards, which will be
held on Sunday, April 7 in the United States.
The 2024 CMT Music Awards will be held
at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. Unlike
previous years, in 2024, Ballerini will host
the show alone. She had co-hosts on past
shows, including Kane Brown and Anthony
Mackie.
An Australian airdate is yet to be
announced and a broadcaster has not been
confirmed, though it is expected to air on
Foxtel via the CMT channel.
“I couldn’t be more excited to be back for
my fourth year with my CMT family to host
this year’s CMT Music Awards in Austin,
Texas,” Ballerini said.
“Hosting an awards show that celebrates
the music that the fans love most has been
an honour, and I know this year will be
another unforgettable night.”
Urban releases new music
Aussie country export Keith Urban has
dropped a new track, ‘Messed Up As Me’.
“Most of us have been in dysfunctional
relationships before, where there’s not a lot
of compatibility, except for that one area
where it’s so good you put up with all the
rest. A phone call or a night out and you’re
right back where you shouldn’t be,” Urban
says of the track.
It’s available now on all the usual streaming
services.
At the movies...
PREVIEW
PREVIEW
The Great Escaper
Imaginary
1 hour, 36 minutes 1 hour, 45 minutes
In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan
(Michael Caine) made global headlines.
He had staged a “great escape” from his
care home to join fellow war veterans on
a beach in Normandy, commemorating
their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings
70th anniversary.
It was a story that captured the imagination
of the world as Bernie embodied the
defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation
that was fast disappearing. But of course,
it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational
but sanitised retelling of one man’s
need to come to terms with the lasting
trauma of war.
Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48
hours, also marked the culmination of his
60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson).
‘The Great Escaper’ celebrates their
enduring love.
From Blumhouse, the
genre-defining masterminds
behind ‘Five Nights
At Freddy’s’ and ‘M3GAN’,
comes an original horror
that taps into the innocence
of imaginary friends
– and begs the question:
Are they really figments of
childhood imagination or
is something more terrifying
lying just beneath?
When Jessica (DeWanda
Wise) moves back into
her childhood home with
her family, her youngest
stepdaughter Alice (Pyper
Braun) develops an eerie
attachment to a stuffed
bear named Chauncey she
finds in the basement. Alice
starts playing games with
Chauncey that begin playful
and become increasingly
sinister. As Alice’s behaviour
becomes more and
more concerning, Jessica
intervenes only to realise
Chauncey is much more
than the stuffed toy bear
she believed him to be.
Damien Power, Stephen Hall and Rhonda
Burchmore, firing good-natured insults and
saw a preview of this a few weeks’ back and
it has its moments for sure, but it’s clear the
84-year-old comedy legend is in his twilight
years and it’s quite sad to witness.
Ê Paramount+ has announced a new series
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Premiers await exciting Eels
NATHAN TAYLOR
Are the Eels the real deal in 2024?
That’s the question being ask around
Parramatta this week after the side
demolished the Canterbury Bulldogs 26-8 in
the opening round of the season.
Played in front of a sold-out crowd at
CommBank Stadium last Saturday, the Eels
ran in four tries to two, with backrower
Bryce Cartwright scoring a double in the
18-point victory.
Parramatta were in control for the
entire match, leading 20-0 after 51
minutes before Cameron Ciraldo’s
men crossed for two late
consultation tries.
New Eels centre Morgan
Harper – in his debut match for
the club – opened the scoring in
the 12th minute, while winger Bailey
Simonsson put the finishing touches on
the game with a try with four minutes to go.
The only downside for Eels fans was a groin
injury to halfback Mitch Moses. The NSW
half was able to play on, and coach Brad
Arthur didn’t appear too concerned when
speaking after the game.
“The doctor said his groin was a bit
sore but he was OK, and not to kick,
that was the feedback,” Arthur
said of Moses’ injury.
The Eels will take on Penrith this
Friday night at BlueBet Stadium.
