ANZAC DAY 2024
Where to pay respects
this ANZAC Day
ELLIE BUSBY
From Dawn Services to games of
two-up, residents across Parramatta
and Cumberland will remember those
who made the ultimate sacrifice for our
country this ANZAC Day.
Every year on April 25, Australians everywhere
come together for a day of national
remembrance to honour those who have
served and continue to serve.
Locally, a range of services will be held at
dawn – the time of the original landing in
Gallipoli – to commemorate ANZAC Day.
In Parramatta, a Dawn Service will be
hosted by the Parramatta RSL sub-Branch at
the War Memorial and Cenotaph in Prince
Alfred Square at 4.30am. There will not be a
march this year.
Club Parramatta will also be open from 9am,
serving up a range of ANZAC Day specials for
both lunch and dinner.
The Epping RSL sub-Branch ANZAC Dawn
service will kick off at 6am at the War Memorial
and Cenotaph in Forest Park, Epping.
All veterans who would like to parade are
encouraged to assemble at the stairs off
Blaxland Road in Epping at 5.45am, where the
march will then begin.
Over in Merrylands, the Dawn Service will
start at 5am for the 5.15am march at Charles
Locals will gather this Thursday for ANZAC Day commemorations.
Mance Reserve. The Granville service will
begin at 6am at Granville Memorial Drive,
followed by breakfast at the Granville Diggers
Club
The Auburn Dawn Service at Auburn
Memorial Park will also commence at
6am.
Following the dissolvement of the Lidcombe
RSL sub-Branch, the ANZAC Day Dawn
Service hosted at Remembrance Park,
Lidcombe, will no longer go ahead – including
the breakfast following the dawn service at
DOOLEYS Lidcombe Catholic Club.
Those who would have attended this
event are instead encouraged to join the
annual DOOLEYS Regent’s Park ANZAC Day
commemoration service at 1pm at Regent
Street Pavilion, in partnership with Heartbeat
Church.
For those looking to be involved in a day
service, Guildford Leagues Club will hold a
mid-morning service at 10:30am, followed by
A range of Dawn Services will take place
locally this Thursday.
light refreshments.
Club Merrylands Bowling is also inviting
both members and guests to pay their respects
to those who have served and continue to
serve at a 10.30am service.
Albion Hotel, Merrylands RSL Club, The
Epping Club and Silverwater Hotel are just
some of the local venues that will be hosting
games of two-up in the afternoon, along with
food specials.
We must never forget ANZAC legacy
When ANZAC Day comes around every year,
many of us wake up early and head to the
Dawn Service.
It is a time of important reflection and tribute.
For each individual, there’s a slightly different
reason they’re there and a mixture of
feelings running through their thoughts.
One thing we should all reflect on is how
lucky we are. And how much we owe those
who served our country, many losing their
lives so we could live ours in the high standards
we do today.
It is so important that ANZAC Day continues
to thrive as it will be harder and harder for new
generations to make a personal connection to
the first and second World War, and for them
to understand how it changed our country
and ultimately, their lives today.
That is hardly their fault – time heals all
wounds, they say, and the younger generations
will have their own tragedies and world
events to commemorate and remember.
But we can never forget those who fought
and died for us. Lest We Forget.
ANZAC day offers many lessons
“They shall not grow old, as we that are left
grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the
years condemn. At the going down of the sun,
and in the morning, we will remember them.”
These words, penned a century and ten years
ago by the English poet Laurence Binyon,
have become immortalised as the Ode for the
Returned and Services League (RSL) and a fixture
at ANZAC Day commemorations around
the country. In hearing them, as I did this past
weekend at the annual Sunday Service of the
Epping RSL Sub-Branch, it was impossible not
to tremble.
The remarkable thing is that they have never
become rote during my 37 years in Australia,
perhaps in the same way as prayers and recitations
in a church.
On the contrary, I have found that they take
on a different hue each time, capable of fresh
interpretation whether received through the
wide-eyed innocence of a child, the wisdom
you gain as an adult, all the way to those solemnly
and quietly contemplating their own
mortality in later life.
The power of the Ode, I have also found, lies
in combination with the strains of The Last
Post. It is a melody that can fill the air with
pomp and assurance, or tentatively, self-consciously,
with everyone willing the bugler to
succeed despite the occasional false note.
Ironically, it is the less confident rendition
that forces the deepest introspection. Almost
as if the wavering tune and rustling wind are
metaphors for the vicissitudes of the soldier
and fragility of life.
Sunday’s event started with a sombre service
at the Epping Club. This was followed by the
traditional short parade along Rawson Street
to the Boronia Park Cenotaph for the dedication
ceremony and laying of wreaths.
Shaded by blue gum trees, within earshot of
the chirping of birds and youngsters enjoying
nearby play equipment, the site is one of my
favourite places in Epping. Bearing a plaque
on stone plinth, and surrounded by additional
plaques mounted on a perimeter wall, it is
dedicated to locals who paid the ultimate sacrifice
during the First and Second World Wars.
These men and women form an estimated
103,000 deaths with Australian units from Korea
to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and other
theatres of conflict around the world.
The scale of the loss, and of the pride to local
communities, is unfathomable.
Noticeable among the sea of faces – including
those who joined afterwards for tea, coffee,
and a heaping serving of cakes and ANZAC
biscuits, was the diversity. Veterans wearing
blazers and medals, together with their families.
Members of the Golden Kangaroos Concert
Band. Parents of young children brandishing
their musical instruments, many of
Asian or Indian subcontinental background.
Local dignitaries, uniformed cadets, representatives
of nearby churches and just ordinary
community members and passers-by.
We will see a similar fusion of traditional
and contemporary Australia as more events
take place across Parramatta and Cumberland
culminating with ANZAC Day on Thursday.
All paying their respects to a sacrifice that remains
timeless, and the values of courage, endurance
and mateship in the face of adversity
– first forged on the cliffs of Gallipoli – that will
forever define who we are.
This year’s commemorations come at a
troubled time both in the world and at home.
With the recent tragedy at Bondi Junction and
church riot in Wakeley, our community has
gained newfound appreciation of the importance
of public service and how it takes many
forms.
The actions of Inspector Amy Scott in singlehandedly
neutralising a lethal threat to the
public will live long in the history of this city,
in the same way as those of our armed service
personnel.
We cannot all be soldiers, firefighters or
police. But perhaps this ANZAC Day, we can
think about acts of service that we can perform
in our own lives.
This is what ANZAC Day does – compelling
us to care beyond self and appreciate that we
are nothing without those around us, not to
mention those who have come before.
I visited Gallipoli back in 2007, the only time
in my life that I have done so. Having been
born in London with parents hailing from Goa
in India, I still remember it as an important
stop on my visit to Turkey. A pilgrimage that I
felt I had to make.
Coming to terms with ANZAC Day is important
for all of us as we learn, in our own way,
to become not just better people but better
Australians.
ANZAC DAY 2024
Next generation reflects
Service never forgotten as students reveal what ANZAC Day means to them
ELLIE BUSBY
A
collection of mementos
on display at St Margaret
Mary’s Primary School
in Merrylands has seen students
reflect on what ANZAC Day means
to them.
Teacher Lyn Burton, who created
the display, said its great to see
it spark an interest in the young
students.
“A lot of children have got interested,
saw the display and then
shared their stories about their
family histories and what they know
about ANZAC Day,” she told Parra
News.
“[It’s about] teaching the children
that ANZAC Day isn’t just about
Gallipoli, there was so much more
than just Gallipoli, but also teaching
them about the qualities and the
things of people who did serve, as
well as the women that worked hard
and the effect on families.”
The ANZAC display has been
mostly compiled from photos and
artifacts that Burton’s parents
collected over time, as well as
replica newspapers Burton found
herself as a teenager.
Students Gabriella Clark, who holds a photo of her great uncle, and Levi
Van Spanje, with the medals of his relatives who served.
She said she’s loved being able to
tell the stories of those who have
served to the children, including
that of her own parents.
“Mum was a nurse and my dad was
in the air force and then moved to
the army. He didn’t serve overseas
but he joined with his brother - they
thought it would be a bit of fun to
join the armed forces,” she said.
“And one of them learnt it wasn’t
fun, because he was sent to New
Guinea and was presumed lost
for quite a long time, so that was
distressing of course for his family,
but he was found.”
For eight-year-old St Margaret
Mary’s student Gabriella Clark,
ANZAC Day is an opportunity to
remember her great uncle who
fought in World War I.
“It means a lot to me, and ANZAC
Momentos on display.
Day ALWAYS reminds me of him,”
she said.
Levi Van Spanje, also eight-yearsold,
enjoys going to the ANZAC
Day March in Sydney every year in
honour of his family members who
have served.
He is particularly proud of his great
grandfather, George Van Spanje,
a submariner with the Dutch East
Indies who fought against the
Japanese in the Pacific. Pride is the
overwhelming feeling.
“I’m proud of them… I think of
them every year on ANZAC
Day in the city marching,”
he added.
Grace Carlo-Stella,
Principal of St Margaret
Mary’s Primary, added
that it’s important that
young people know
about the Australians who
fought for the country’s
freedom.
“We’re very grateful that
Lyn does that for us because
I think it’s really important
to keep the history alive for
the young students coming
up, and whether they’ve had
ancestors that have fought in
battle or not, it’s important that we
remember what Australians did for
us to have the country that we have
today,” she said.
“Once we get back from our school
break, Lyn and Michelle, who is
our other teacher librarian, they
will actually be taking every class
throughout the first two weeks
and doing some work on ANZAC
Day, because we think that’s very
important.”
LOCAL NEWS
Views mixed on sky
high apartment plan
ELLIE BUSBY
The NSW Independent Planning
Commission has approved a new
$210 million 34-storey buildto-rent
tower for Parramatta – but not
everyone is happy about it.
Despite objections by City of
Parramatta, developer Novus will now
proceed with plans to construct 204
build-to-rent units at 39-43 Hassall
Street.
Set to feature a three-storey retail and
commercial podium, the tower will
also include three levels of basement
car parking for 84 car spaces, a rooftop
terrace, swimming pool and communal
open spaces.
The State Significant Development
is slated to provide approximately 329
construction jobs and 66 operational
jobs.
Planning documents said the tower
will contribute towards a “vibrant, energetic,
healthy, sustainable, and resilient
community” in Parramatta.
“The proposed development will
deliver new dwellings within Paramatta
CBD and will contribute to the housing
needs of Greater Sydney and particularly
Parramatta CBD,” it said.
“The proposal will also align with the
principles of urban revitalisation, which
seek to deliver a genuine 30-minute city
where people live, work, educate, and
recreate all within 30 minutes of Sydney’s
Central River City.”
But the plans have also raised some
flags among the local community –
particularly surrounding traffic and
potential flooding.
How the podium of the new 34-storey
building will look.
15 submissions were received opposing
the development, with only two in
support of the plans.
“Parking is already a nightmare in this
area. How on earth the developer thinks
that 84 car spaces is an appropriate
provision for a building of this scale is
beyond me,” one local resident said.
“Another ugly designed building to
mar the streetscape, [especially] with its
proximity to heritage areas and buildings.
Also increased risk of flooding due
to proximity to Clay Cliff Creek,” another
said.
A City of Parramatta submission
revealed the Council holds serious
concerns about how the development
will handle the risk of flood.
“After reviewing all of the material
shared by the Commission, Council is of
the view that the proposed development
will present significant risk of harm to
occupants and others in a severe storm,”
the submission said.
“Horizontal evacuation is not possible
and so the development relies on shelter
in place, but the proponent has sought to
minimise this to an unserviceable and
unsafe level, contrary to Council advice
and DCP requirements.”
The NSW Independent Planning
Commission granted developmental
consent for the project – but only if the
developer follows a selection of requirements
to improve flood safety for future
occupants.
This includes developing a shelter in
place strategy and restrictions on horizontal
evacuation.
What do you think about the development?
ELLIE BUSBY
Housing has been revealed as the
number one challenge impacting
residents in key suburbs of
Cumberland, according to a new mental
health and wellbeing survey.
A door-to-door mental health and wellbeing
survey carried out in Westmead, Wentworthville
and South Wentworthville has
revealed that nearly two in five householders
reported worrying about their housing
and living conditions.
1,544 householders in Cumberland were
spoken to as part of the Assisting Communities
through Direct Connection (ACDC)
Project – an initiative that involves knocking
on the doors of householders and offering
information about services, instead of waiting
for people to ask for help.
From the 205 householders who responded
to the survey, a whopping 72.4 per cent were
born outside of Australia.
Bill Gye, CEO of Community Mental
Health Australia (CMHA), who manages
the ACDC Project, said it’s not surprising
that housing is a key concern to residents in
Cumberland.
“Housing is really big and in some areas
it’s the number one concern, and that’s also
something we hear on the news all the time,
it’s the price of rental equality,” he told Parra
News.
“The quality of the housing and the availability
of the housing is really an issue.”
People Connectors from Psychcentral,
who partnered with CMHA, went door-todoor
between August 2023 and March 2024.
They spoke with householders about their
mental health and wellbeing and distributed
information about the free support
services available in their area.
Gye said the major factor that stopped
people in Cumberland accessing support
was that they believed they were not unwell
enough.
“This is consistent with other research
showing that for many people, particularly
those from culturally and linguistically
diverse backgrounds, that mental health is
something that happens to other people and
is seen as something to be embarrassed or
ashamed about,” he said.
“People think that you should only seek
help when things are very bad or at crisis
point – which is what we don’t want.”
Gye added it also shows a greater need
for improved promotion to Culturally and
Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities
about the value of general mental health
and wellbeing.
“We must make sure that they’re localised
and individualised and not cookie-cutter
solutions that are suitable for different
diversity groups,” he said.
“Particularly so they’re culturally
appropriate, so they’re more accessible for
people.”
Of those surveyed, 50 per cent revealed
they would benefit from more support talking
to a professional face-to-face, with 38
per cent saying they would prefer to talk to
others who have had the same experiences.
The ACDC Project is being implemented
in communities across all states and territories
of Australia to improve wellbeing and
collect important data with the assistance of
the Centre for Social Impact.
Gye said this report will contribute to local
planners data to help plan more precisely
what’s needed in particular local areas
when it comes to mental health.
“Being connected with people in communities
is something human beings have done
for most of our evolutionary time, we’re now
a lot more fragmented,” he said.
“We need a kindness revolution.”
LOCAL NEWS
Surfin’ Western Sydney
$75 million URBNSURF rolls into Sydney Olympic Park
ELLIE BUSBY
Projected to inject a whopping $250
million into the local economy over
the next two decades, Sydney’s first
ever surf park is already making waves in
western Sydney.
Locals will no longer have to make the trek
into Sydney or down the coast to catch some
waves, with the much-anticipated URBN-
SURF Sydney finally set to open on May 13.
Located in Sydney Olympic Park, the $75
million wave park spans 3.6 hectares, with a
lagoon size similar in size to that of the Sydney
Cricket Ground.
Having grown up in Greystanes, URBNSURF
CEO Damon Tudor believes the park will have
a huge impact on western Sydney and introduce
a whole new generation to surfing.
“For me, many decades ago I learnt to surf
traveling from the west, so being able to
present it here in such a great location… it’s
something really special,” he told Parra News.
“[We’re] also creating a destination location
that’s going to operate almost every day of the
year, other than Christmas Day, Good Friday
and ANZAC morning, so that in itself is very
different for Olympic Park, which is obviously
driven by events and major activities.
“Here you’ve got something people will
come to see – it will just bring to life the whole
precinct.”
Surf’s up in western Sydney, as URBNSURF Sydney prepares to open.
Last week, URBNSURF Sydney officially
turned on the wave machine for the first time
publicly, as plenty of surfers eagerly hit the
water to check it out for themselves.
The park uses Wavegarden technology to
pump out 400 waves per hour and provide up
to 12 “perfect” waves per person.
Not only open to expert surfers, URBNSURF
offers plenty of sessions at all levels of surfing
ability.
“What we’ve already seen with our park in
Melbourne, there’s people who have surfed
at Melbourne who have never surfed in the
ocean before, so it created a whole new accessibility
to different segments,” Tudor added.
“It’s definitely opened it up, the key thing
URBNSURF Sydney will officially open to the
public in Sydney Olympic Park on May 13.
is we like to say is it’s democratised surfing –
anyone can do it now.”
Set to operate seven days a week, the facility
will accommodate up to 1,000 visitors per day.
The park also features a surf academy, a
leisure swimming pool, skate pad, a Rip Curl
shop, and a health and wellness centre.
Hospitality group Applejack will also
introduce two new food offerings to the park
– including the second location of popular
North Sydney restaurant RAFI, and casual
surfside all-day eatery Sandy’s.
“We really needed to create a destination
restaurant, so we’ve got Sandy’s which is the
surfside all-day eatery for the general surfers,”
Applejack Director, Ben Carroll said.
“But upstairs [in RAFI], we wanted to create
something quite different, and we wanted that
elevated service but still super accessible.”
Bookings are now open at www.urbnsurf.
Unlocking the power of Google
My Business for small businesses
Having a strong online presence is
crucial for small businesses, and
Google My Business (GMB) sits at
the heart of that presence. Yet, many businesses
are yet to unlock the full potential
of their GMB profiles. From setting up your
profile to harnessing the power of reviews
and improving your search ranking, there’s
a lot to cover.
So, let’s look into how you can make GMB
work harder for your business.
Why GMB matters
Google My Business is more than just a
directory; it’s your digital storefront. It’s the
first thing many potential customers will
see when they search for your services. A
well-optimised GMB profile can improve
your visibility, help you share important
information about your business, and allow
you to connect with customers directly from
the search results.
Setting up your GMB profile
Getting your Google My Business profile
up and running involves a few key steps
that are essential for making your business
easily discoverable online. Here’s how to get
started:
1. Claim your listing: Search for your
business on Google to see if it already
exists. If it does, you can claim it as your
own. If not, you can easily add your
business to Google.
2. Verify your business: Google needs to
verify that your business is legitimate
and that you’re the owner. This is
usually done through a verification code
sent via postcard, phone call, or email.
3. Complete our profile: Fill in every
detail about your business. Start with
the basics: your business name, address,
and phone number (NAP). Then add
your website, business hours, and a
detailed description of what you offer.
4. Add photos: Visuals are key. Upload
high-quality images of your business,
including your logo, the exterior and
interior of your location, and any products
or services.
5. Choose the right categories: Select
categories that best describe your business
to help Google match your profile
with relevant searches.
Harnessing the power of reviews
Encourage satisfied customers to leave
a review by making the process as easy as
possible. This could be through follow-up
emails, links on your website, or even a gentle
nudge at the end of a service. Remember, a
healthy number of reviews (more than 10)
adds legitimacy to your business in the eyes
of both Google and potential customers.
Improving your GMB ranking
To climb up the search rankings, you need
to optimise your GMB profile with relevant
keywords, regularly update your information,
and post fresh content through GMB
posts. Additionally, responding to reviews
and questions shows that you’re active.
Watch out world! This week the Sun
squares Pluto (in your sign) and there’s
a Full Moon in your career/public/
reputation zone. So you need to find
appropriate ways to let off steam, and
choose challenging projects to channel
all your electric energy into. It’s also time
to embrace and celebrate your contrary,
quirky Aquarian side. As birthday great
Barbra Streisand observes, “I am simple,
complex, generous, selfish, unattractive,
beautiful, lazy and driven.”
Tuesday night’s Full Moon shines
a bright spotlight on travel, communication
and/or education. And your
financial future looks rosier this week, as
the planets activate your money zone in
positive ways (Mercury moves forwards
on Thursday and lucky Venus is visiting
until April 29). So – whether you get a pay
rise, take on a second job, cash in some
investments, organise a garage sale or
sell an important asset – it’s time to make
hay while the Sun shines!
Mercury has been reversing through
your sign, which can cause misunderstandings
with other people and lots
of self-doubt. Mercury finally moves
forwards on Thursday and – hopefully
– you have learned a thing or two over
the last few weeks. Your motto for the
moment is from Barbra Streisand,
“Doubt can motivate you, so don’t be
afraid of it. Confidence and doubt are at
two ends of the scale, and you need both.
They balance each other out.”
This week the Sun, Jupiter and Uranus
are jumping through your sign, the Full
Moon revs up your relationship zone,
and Mercury moves forwards. So avoid
getting stuck in a static way of thinking
and a routine way of behaving. A current
situation (or problem) has more flexible
options and exciting possibilities than
you previously thought. Your motto is
from movie star (and birthday great)
Barbra Streisand, “I just don’t want to be
hampered by my own limitations.”
On Thursday, Mercury (your ruling
planet) finally moves forwards which
will boost your confidence, energy levels,
and personal magnetism. But there’s also
a tricky Full Moon so, if you indulge in
gossip and make hasty pronouncements,
you could end up in a complicated mess.
There’s a lot going on behind the scenes
that you’re not aware of. Smart Twins
will do some detective work (and check
the facts thoroughly) before you proceed
with your plans.
The Sun, Jupiter and Uranus are
visiting your networking zone, and the
Full Moon stimulates your friendship
zone. So the more you mix and mingle,
and the more connections you make,
the better the week will be. Looking for
employment? It’s time to capitalise on
all the contacts you have. From family
and friends to colleagues and casual
acquaintances. Don’t wait for opportunities
to magically appear. Be proactive
about following your dreams!
Prepare for a colourful week Cats! On
Monday, the Sun/Pluto square will amp
up your bossy side. Then Tuesday night’s
Full Moon falls in your home zone so
be on domestic drama alert. Confiscate
all sharp implements and choose your
words wisely, as loved ones are liable
to make mountains out of molehills.
Mercury moves forwards on Thursday
which favours travel, education and
communication as you socialise with a
wide range of cosmopolitan people.
After nearly three weeks of confusion,
chaos, delays and/or dramas, Mercury
(your patron planet) finally turns direct
on Thursday – yeah! Plus the Sun, Jupiter,
Uranus and the Full Moon activate your
travel, education and adventure zones,
which encourages you to explore exciting
new horizons. The wider your circle
of friends and acquaintances, the more
influence you will have in the big world
outside your door. Being curious and
confident are the keys.
This week the planetary focus is on
money and business matters, as Tuesday
night’s Full Moon fires up your finance
zones. But the lingering Sun/Pluto
square could throw a partnership challenge
in your direction (perhaps involving
jealous behaviour or a power struggle).
Your ruling planet Venus is visiting
your relationship zone (until April 29)
and Mercury turns direct on Thursday,
so do your best to play the perceptive,
diplomatic Libran peacemaker.
SCORPIO
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Monday starts with the lingering
effects of the intense Sun/Pluto square,
which could amp up your control-freak
tendencies. And then the Full Moon
lights up your sign on Tuesday night,
which could magnify your compulsive
side. You’re determined to win an argument
or solve a problem but don’t step on
other people’s toes in the process. And
don’t get stuck in a stultifying rut. Less
confrontation and more cooperation will
get you where you want to go.
Mercury is still retrograde until
Thursday so there could be a misunderstanding
with a child, teenager or friend.
Choose your words carefully and look
to your trusted circle of loved ones for
comfort and support. With the Full Moon
stimulating your seclusion zone you’ll
find rest, relaxation, meditation and/
or contemplation are essential. Shirley
Maclaine says, “The most profound
relationship we will ever have is the one
with ourselves.”
This week you’ll find life’s complicated,
partnerships are unpredictable, and
the rules are constantly changing, as
unresolved relationship difficulties or
financial issues come back to test you.
Maybe you need to simplify your life, cull
some of your commitments, or finally
give a fair-weather friend the flick? Plus
find time to spruce up your living space
so Casa Capricorn is more comfortable
and beautiful. Fresh flowers and relaxing
music are a must!
IN THE MIRRORwith Cassidy Pearce
Reviewing my Beauty Pass Sale haul
If you’re anything like me,
you probably spent a little
too much on last week’s
Sephora Beauty Pass Sale.
Here are my first impressions
on the things I bought, and
whether I think they’re worth
your money – with or without
the 20 per cent off.
Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve
Peptide Lip Treatment in
‘Strawberry Sorbet’
The Ole Henriksen Pout
Preserve Peptide Lip Treatment
is described as an advanced
lip treatment that instantly
plumps lip with hydration and
smoothes lip lines.
With lip products all the rage
at the moment, everyone is
trying to find the best one, and
I truly think this is a contender.
As far as texture goes, I think
it’s fairly similar to the Lanolips
Superbalms, however it’s not
quite as thick and gloopy. In
saying that, it’s also not as thin
as the Summer Fridays ones,
meaning it lasts longer, and
you don’t have to reapply as
frequently.
I haven’t purchased anything
from Ole Henriksen before, so
I likely wouldn’t have picked
it up if I hadn’t seen it recommended
on TikTok, but I’m so
glad I did!
Fenty Beauty Demi’Glow
Light-Diffusing Highlighter
in ‘Pretty Purlz’
Fenty Beauty just released
their range of Demi’Glow
Light-Diffusing Highlighters,
which are skin tone-based
highlighters designed to flatter
every tone for a low-key glow.
Being so fair, I’m always nervous
about highlighters being
too deep for my skin tone, but
I was pleasantly surprised by
the shade ‘Pretty Purlz’. I think
it provides a natural ‘lit from
within’ type of glow, which I
would recommend to anyone
looking to complement a
no-makeup-makeup look.
Lanolips Lip Scrub Strawberry
The Lanolips Lip Scrub is a
balm-based lip scrub made
with gentle sugar and real,
finely ground strawberry seed
pieces to smooth away dead
skin, whilst the 70 per cent
lanolin deeply hydrates.
I generally lean towards more
harsh sugar scrubs for the lips,
so this product will definitely
take some getting used to, but
based on first impressions I do
think it does a good job at both
smoothening and hydrating
the lips – especially given it’s
only $15 full price.
Natasha Denona Hy-Per
Natural Face Palette
The Hy-Per Natural Face
Palette is a brand-new concept
for Natasha Denona, featuring
a combination of eyeshadow,
blush, bronzer and contour
shades.
The face shades have a
natural matte finish, and are
buildable in pigmentation. I
do think the pan sizes might
be an issue if you’re wanting
to use a larger brush, however
thankfully the shades don’t
have too much fall out, so if you
are careful, you don’t have to
worry about picking up more
than one by accident.
Of the eyeshadows, ‘Dreamy’
is by far my favourite, being
the only true shimmer, whilst
the others are more malleable
formulas which could be satin
or matte depending on how
they’re applied.
At $112 full price, I do think
you’d be better off finding
something less expensive, as
this is a lot of money to spend if
you’re not completely obsessed
with a product – I prefer my
Hourglass palettes as another
option at a similar price point.
Rare Beauty Soft Pinch
Luminous Powder Blush in
‘Love’
I picked this one up as I was
looking for a red-toned powder
blush to go over the top of a
similar liquid shade I have
already.
I think this one is really pretty,
and thankfully nowhere near
as glowy as it looks in the pan!
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
MOVING,
FUN AND
MEMORABLE
CASSIDY PEARCE
In 2020, award-winning journalist Shannon
Molloy released Fourteen – a memoir
about growing up gay at an all-boys
rugby-mad Catholic school in regional
Queensland. Now, it’s made its way to
the stage, and it’s heading to Riverside Theatres.
Lead performer Conor Leach has been involved
with ‘Fourteen’ since its original season,
having portrayed Molloy now for almost
two years.
According to Leach, once the script came
across his desk, being a part of the show was
a no-brainer.
“I read the script, and I read the book, and
it just grabbed me immediately. I don’t think
any actor in their right mind would say no,” he
said.
“It’s such a beautiful and moving story, and
I was so drawn to Shannon’s vulnerability in
sharing the story in his book.”
Though playing multiple different versions
of Molloy throughout his life in what is such
a personal role has had its challenges, Conor
said that having him on board during the creative
process has definitely taken some weight
off his shoulders.
“I find acting a very exciting challenge all the
time, but truly the best resource was the book,”
he said.
“Shannon just laid out his story all for me,
and he was the best resource to have, as well
as him being the room. Just getting a sense of
his energy was enormously useful.
“There’s a lot of mental gymnastics in the
show in terms of who I am at any given time
– am I 14-year-old Shannon, or 30-year-old
Shannon?”
But, with the show set against a backdrop
of iconic ‘90s music, Leach assured
there are still plenty of fun
aspects to it for cast and audience
members alike.
“The beauty of the show is that there’s camp,
and there’s comedy, and there’s so many fun
dance routines, but that’s juxtaposed with the
very harsh reality of what Shannon was going
through when he was 14,” he said.
“I love when I get to alternate very quickly
between those moments, because it feels
very lifelike, like tragedy and joy in the same
breath.”
Having not done the show since its original
season, which kicked off in September 2022,
Leach said he can’t wait to bring it back.
“Over the last year and a half, it’s just been
sinking in – the story and the world of the play
and the character. It’s settled a bit,” he said.
“Coming back to the show is like putting on
your favourite pair of jeans – it just feels comfortable
and joyous and truly just such a privilege
to bring a story like this to the stage.”
Assuring he’s not exaggerating when he says
‘Fourteen’ will make you laugh and cry, Leach
said the show isn’t just for one type of person,
with everyone able to get something out of it.
“We’ve had lots of school students who’ve
loved it, lots of families came to see the show
and adored it, lots of older folk who had sons
or grandsons who may have experienced
things like Shannon,” he said.
“It was one of those rare shows where you
could sense how it was moving people and
changing people as you were doing it. It’s a
beautiful celebration of [Molloy’s] story.”
‘Fourteen’ will be on at Riverside Theatres
on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. Tickets
start at $34.50. For more information or
COUNTRY
CORNER
Stapleton heads down under
Tickets are on sale now for Chris Stapleton’s
Australian tour early next year.
He will play at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena
on March 3.
It is Stapleton’s first Australian tour and
comes as his status as one of the biggest
artists in country music continues.
Kentucky-born Stapleton is an 10x Grammy,
15x CMA and 10x ACM Award-winner and
one of the United States’ most respected and
beloved musicians.
In the midst of yet another triumphant
year, Stapleton recently won two awards
at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards: Best
Country Solo Performance and Best Country
Song (both for his #1 song, ‘White Horse’).
He was also named Entertainer of the Year at
last year’s 58th ACM Awards.
no saddle,” she sings in her honeyed tone.
On one hand her lyrics criticise country
music’s sudden and widespread assimilation
into pop culture; boots, hats, rodeo – all
of which she references in the timely track.
Yet it also serves as a celebration of the
genre’s roots, praising its trailblazers and
heroes. “Yeah, you can wear the hat, but you
can’t fake that.”
“Growing up, I wanted to be like Calamity
Jane or Annie Oakley,” she said.
“I loved their outlaw attitude and the way
they fiercely inspired countless women to
blaze their own trails and I see that same
quality in the women I share my life with.”
Social commentary aside, Brooke intended
the song to be a departure from her usual
tendencies.
“Compared to the majority of my songs
that often hold a strong emotional tone, this
one was written with a lightheartedness,”
she said.
The song is out now on all the usual
streaming services.
Brooke wears heart on her sleeve
A perceptive storyteller with a mesmerising
voice, Katie Brooke is one of few modern
country music artists to still call Australia’s
rural reaches home.
Her latest single ‘Can’t Fake That’ holds a
candle to that true blue way of life.
“Can’t be all hat and no cattle, all horse and
At the movies...
REVIEW
Monkey Man

2 hours, 0 minutes
Chaotic is a good way to
describe Dev Patel’s directorial
debut with ‘Monkey Man’,
not that it’s necessarily a bad
thing.
Patel co-writes, stars and
directs this fast-paced action
flick, where power and money
rule and revenge is at its core.
Patel stars as ‘Kid’, who
scraps behind a gorilla mask
at an underground fight club.
He may not be the best fighter
on the card, but it’s money in
the hand and clearly there’s a
bigger goal at play.
The bigger goal becomes
clear when Kid lands a job in
a high end club that attracts
political leaders and city
officials, including the Chief
of Police (Sikandar Kher), who
we learn destroyed Kid’s life.
As ‘Kid’ seeks revenge, the
body count grows – and the
violence deepens.
‘Monkey Man’ is certainly
a wild ride, and there’s little
consistency – one minute
we’re going through a lengthy
quiet patch with little action,
the next we’re watching a
flurry of punches, kicks and
gunshots – it certainly goes
from zero to 100 in the blink of
an eye.
The film is exceptionally well
edited and shot, and at times
you feel like you’re right in the
room with them.
But it’s impossible to escape
that it’s almost too stop-start
at times, and definitely 20-odd
minutes too long.
If you’re an action fan, you’ll
find plenty of highs in ‘Monkey
Man’ – there’s certainly some
pretty impressive fight scenes
and a particularly bloody
kill scene that will have you
turning away with eyes closed.
The story is reasonable
enough to carry it through,
but it doesn’t go to a level that
makes it a memorable flick or
re-watch material.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Rudan vows to fight until the end
NATHAN TAYLOR
The equation to play in the A-League
Finals is simple for Western Sydney:
defeat Melbourne Victory on Saturday
night and hope 11th placed Western United
cause a massive upset on Sunday by beating
Melbourne City.
The Wanderers will have to qualify for their
second post-season in a row the hard way
after they lost their final home match of the
season 2-1 last Saturday evening.
A win over Melbourne City would’ve locked
in Western Sydney’s place in the 2024 playoffs,
but instead they’ll have to win this weekend
and make sure other results go their way.
City led 2-0 at half-time after Leo Natel and
Marin Jakolis scored goals in the opening
stanza at CommBank Stadium.
Clearly unhappy with his side’s first half
performance, Wanderers coach Marko Rudan
made two changes at the break and it was
one of those substitutes, Marcus Younis, who
