AN HONOUR
AND A PRIVILEGE
ELLIE BUSBY
The Australia Day Honours list has
been revealed, with an impressive
five residents across Parramatta
and Cumberland receiving the prestigious
Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
From supporting the community and
local sport, to helping veterans, migrants
and refugees, this year’s group of extraor-
dinary locals are showcasing what it truly
means to be Australian.
In Regents Park, Cumberland Councillor
Sabrin Farooqui has been recognised for
her service to the community and to multi-
cultural affairs.
As a founding member and current Pres-
ident of the Cultural Diversity Network
Incorporated, a not-for-profit organisation
committed to helping migrants, refugees
and asylum seekers, and a first-generation
migrant herself, Farooqui is focused on
helping people thrive in Australia.
“No one does this sort of social work for
recognition, but it feels great to be recog-
nised,” she told Parra News.
“I have always felt that migrants and refu-
gees and asylum seekers they always need
their voice, we need to hear their voice, and
that’s why I have done it voluntarily outside
of my job and my other roles.
“This work is so much needed in our
community.”
A well-known name in the local football
community, Peter Bacha is also up for an
OAM for his service to the sport and the
community.
Bacha was a founding member of the
Rydalmere Lions Football Club in 1980 and
has been the president of the club since
2000. He said he was “dumbfounded” when
he found out someone had nominated him
for the award.
“[Rydalmere Lions] has just become a
part of me, it’s been 44 years now, and
seeing the kids enjoying it and keeping
them off the street, and they appreciate
what you do for them, and that’s what just
keeps me going,” he said.
“The Rydalmere Lions, well, it’s a massive
family, and I tell everybody I’ve got the
biggest family in the world.”
Merrylands resident and Bundjalung
man David Williams has received the
medal for his service to veterans and the
community.
Having joined the Royal Australian Navy
in 1965, where he received various service
medals, Williams was also the former pres-
ident of the NSW Branch of the Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Veterans and
Services Association.
When asked how it felt to be awarded the
OAM for his efforts, Williams said it was
great to get the recognition.
Iconic pub’s fresh new look
The near century-old Guildford Hotel is getting a much-needed makeover
ELLIE BUSBY
It’s a new chapter for the Guildford
Hotel, as the popular pub
prepares to unveil its “family-friendly”
renovations to the
community.
From a bistro and sports bar to
a cocktail bar and outdoor beer
garden, the revamped landmark
venue is hoping to broaden its
demographic with a range of new
upgrades.
As the only pub in the area, the
Guildford Hotel has been a cornerstone
of the Guildford community
for almost 100 years now.
Having long held a reputation as
a lively local spot, the new renovations
are set to transform the venue
into a family-friendly destination
where people of all ages can enjoy a
pub feed.
To be revealed in stages, the sports
bar will open in mid-February
and feature a 3m screen, which
will stream a wide selection of live
sporting events.
The cocktail lounge, which
will serve up drinks designed by
renowned mixologist and distiller
Peter Clarke, and bistro will be
An artist’s impression of the revitalised pub.
revealed in mid-April.
In a tribute to local talent and
western Sydney culture, the Guildford
Hotel has also commissioned
artist Nico Nicoson to create a
western Sydney inspired mural in
the outdoor beer garden.
Nicoson will be joined by students
from Western Sydney University’s
art faculty to complete the work
on Saturday, February 17, with the
community invited to watch the
mural being painted alongside live
entertainment.
Chris Farnon, Group Marketing
Manager, expressed his enthusiasm
over the mural, saying it encapsulates
the “spirit of Guildford”
‘The Guildford Mural’ by artist Nico Nicoson.
through art.
“The Guildford Mural is a visually
stunning homage to the multicultural
essence of western Sydney,” he
said.
“The mural is not just a painting;
it’s a story of our community, our
roots, and our shared future of
creating a safe and welcoming
venue.”
Celebrating multiculturalism,
the artwork will include symbols
like Oriental lanterns, a dancing
lion and an Arabic arched window,
alongside the native cockatoo and
eucalyptus patterns to represent the
local flora and fauna.
Local landmarks like the iconic
Lennox Bridge and the heritage-listed
Guildford Pipelines will
also feature in the mural. A soccer
player depicted mid-kick will
acknowledge Guildford’s passion
for sports.
The fresh new look for the local
pub comes as the suburb itself
undergoes a significant revitalisation
through Cumberland Council’s
Public Domain Plan for the Guildford
Town Centre.
“The excitement from Cumberland
City Council and the community
is palpable,” Farnon added.
“We’re all eagerly waiting to see
how Nico’s conversations with
locals and his understanding of our
space culminate in this magnificent
piece.”
Quit whining, Albo got this right
The reaction to Anthony Albanese’s call to
break an election commitment and re-work
the stage three tax cuts has been intriguing to
watch.
The criticism has been surprising; especially
given the changes mean bigger cuts for those
doing it the toughest in the current cost-of-living
crisis.
Ah, a Parramatta summer. There’s nothing
quite like it. A sense of being subsumed by all
the heat Sydney has to offer. Insufferably humid
days and nights. The inevitable mozzies,
roaches and huntsman spiders from leaving
the windows open. That first dip in the pool,
river or ocean. The innocence of being barefoot
and scraping the grass.
With the regularity of an alarm clock, there’s
the annual debate over Australia Day – which
regardless of one’s stance is an occasion of significance
for any migrant. Even today, I still remember
beaming as I received my citizenship
back in the 1990s at Castle Hill Showground.
Increasingly too, at this time of year, I find
myself glancing with puzzlement at the Triple
J ‘Hottest 100’. Realising that even as a music
aficionado, I barely recognise any song on the
list. And after sampling a couple, mourning
the fact they don’t make rollicking tunes like
they once did.
For movie buffs, it’s also a great time to
splurge on films nominated at the Oscars
(and at $25 a ticket – splurge is the only way
to describe it). From ‘The Holdovers’ to ‘Poor
Things’ and ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, there is much
I look forward to watching in coming weeks.
Above all, you know it’s a top summer when
you’re unsure whether to prioritise the cricket
or tennis, as both are so good. There’s something
in the circadian rhythms of Australians
that means whenever a sporting contest is on
in the living room, the holidays never truly
end.
This Test season didn’t look promising
Under the previous plan, those earning
$45,000 a year weren’t getting a cut at all; now
they’re going to be $804 better off.
Someone earning $100,000 a year will also
be $804 better off.
In fact you have to be earning $150,000 a year
before the original cut you were getting is impacted.
But yes, it’s still a cut.
on paper. Pakistan and West Indies hardly
loomed as threatening opposition on local
pitches against an Australian side resplendent
after recent success.
But after Pakistan collapsed in inimitable
fashion for 89 in the fourth innings at Perth,
the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne was a
cracker – with greasy fingers in the field the
main difference between the two sides.
After a nonsensical national telethon about
the whereabouts of David Warner’s baggy
green cap – even I was checking down the
back of my couch at one point – the opener got
the send-off he wanted in front of his home
SCG crowd.
Thereafter, discussion raged in national pubs
and backyards as to whether the selectors
made the correct call to elevate Steve Smith
up the batting. Everyone is suddenly an expert
on whether Smudge’s technique is shot. After
a few cheap dismissals, the jury remains out,
but a near match-winning innings in the just
completed second Test against the West Indies
suggests he will be given further opportunities.
Still, this season, it was generally Australia’s
tireless bowlers that saved the batsmen.
After a pulsating finish last weekend, the true
pleasure of the summer has been seeing the
West Indies bounce back.
Not even the most parochial local fan could
begrudge Shamar Joseph’s exuberant dash
across the Gabba after taking the final wicket
to defeat Australia by eight runs and level the
series 1-1.
Yes, Albanese has gone back on his word
and you could argue that says plenty about his
leadership and where he stands in the respect
stakes.
But sometimes, making the right decision
trumps the political criticism that comes with
it, and it’s hard to argue Albanese hasn’t made
the right call here.
Can we bottle that summer feeling?
The West Indies tour of Australia during the
1988-89 summer remains etched in my brain.
As a young boy, it was the series that first
hooked me on Test Cricket. Faced with the
might of Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge,
Desmond Haynes and the fearsome pace of
Marshall, Ambrose and Walsh – Australia got
hammered.
But the experience was also a baptism of fire
for a young team that would go on to win the
Ashes in England, setting up decades of success.
In Joseph’s raw pace and swashbuckling
batting, you get the sense a new star has been
born – in the mould of the Calypso legends of
yesteryear.
Down at Melbourne Park, an exciting changing
of the guard is also underway with new faces
like Coco Gauff and Qinwen Zheng getting
to the semi-finals of the women’s draw and
22-year-old Italian Janink Sinner triumphing
in the men’s event. Novak Djokovic has been a
great champion, but it becomes harder to root
for someone chasing his zillionth title.
Overall, it was another Australian Open of
seesawing tiebreaks and matches that went
the distance. Alex de Minaur looks ready to
push the big names all year.
But now, the TV is off. School is back. At
work, clients and bosses start filtering back
and issuing requests.
I wish we could bottle the feeling of summer
for longer. Getting older, it’s a time to be prized
more and more.
This year was one of the best.
Recognised for his service to the Lebanese
aspects of the local community throughout
his life.
A journalist at The Herald, author, football
coach, former president of The Association
RSL Club, Karam said he’s proud to be
an Australian of Lebanese origin.
“Everything I’ve done I’m proud of, because
it helped others to assimilate in the community,”
he said.
“Being a Lebanese journalist, translating
Australian news into Arabic helped a lot of
people who couldn’t speak, because they’re
their own language.
that was really enjoyable for me.”
Last but definitely not least of the local
recipients to be awarded an OAM this year is
Northmead resident Lilian Ries.
Not only has she been recognised for almost
30 years of volunteering at the Ronald McDonald
House in Westmead, she also takes out
the impressive title of being this year’s eldest
living recipient of the award at an incredible
100-years-old.
Speaking on behalf of her mother-in-law,
Helen Ries said Lilian was “over the moon”
when she found out she was nominated for
the award.
“[Lilian said] I just hope that my family is
and it definitely will because, wow, it’s just not
BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER
Heat stress and heat related illness pose
a significant risk to our health and
wellbeing. This summer, make sure
you’re aware of what symptoms to look
out for in yourself and your loved ones.
Remember that the impact of heat
accumulates, so several 35-degree days
in a row can be just as dangerous as a
single 45-degree day.
Council has a range of tips and resources
to help you manage heat stress, as well
as places you can go to on hot days.
LOCAL NEWS
Davis quits Council gig
Former Lord Mayor Donna Davis is stepping away from Council to focus on MP role
ELLIE BUSBY
After seven years on
the City of Parramatta
Council, serving as
both a Councillor and Lord
Mayor, Donna Davis has
announced her resignation.
The State Member of
Parramatta shared the news
last week, confirming her exit
from the local Council to focus
more on her commitments as
MP.
She thanked those who
supported her in her time on
Council.
“I’m proud to have helped
shape the City of Parramatta
through a period of tremendous
change and growth, as
both a Councillor and Lord
Mayor,” she said.
“However, with a growing
number of commitments and
responsibilities as the Member
for Parramatta, I have decided
to tender my resignation as a
Councillor.
The announcement comes
after she stepped down from
her Lord Mayor position last
year, following concerns from
others in the Chamber that
she could not balance her fulltime
Council position with
that of her new MP duties.
Sameer Pandey replaced
Davis as Lord Mayor in May,
with current Lord Mayor
Pierre Esber then taking on the
role in September.
Promising exciting times
ahead for Parramatta, the
former Epping Ward Councillor
said she looks forward to
working closely with Council
to keep delivering for the local
community and the shared
vision for a global city.
“As Epping Ward Councillor
I’m particularly proud of the
projects and programs we’ve
put in motion for Epping
Ward including the muchawaited
upgrade of Epping
pool, Oxford Street upgrade,
Somerville Park Improvement
and construction of the West
Epping Dog Off Leash Park
and know these will keep
moving full speed ahead,” she
added.
Parramatta Council
currently maintains a Labor
majority in the Chamber with
six Councillors. Our Local
Community has four seats,
three are Independents and
one Green.
A City of Parramatta spokesperson
said Davis advised
Council of her resignation
effective January 23, 2024.
“Cr Davis has represented
the Epping Ward since
September 2017. In January
2022, she became only the
third female Lord Mayor in the
City’s 160-year history,” the
spokesperson added.
“Cr Davis stepped down as
Lord Mayor in May last year
following her election as State
Member for Parramatta.”
Davis’ exit from Parramatta
Council comes less than eight
months before the next NSW
Local Government elections.
She said she supports
Council not filling the vacant
Councillor position before the
election takes place.
LOCAL NEWS
The “best job ever” is right here in
Parramatta and it could be yours!
ELLIE BUSBY
Parramatta Light Rail has received an
overwhelming amount of interest
from locals eager to get behind the
wheel in western Sydney’s new “best office”.
With the long-awaited Parramatta Light Rail
set to finally take off later this year, Transport
for NSW has revealed a huge number of residents
are eager to become tram drivers.
Since kicking off its recruitment drive in
December 2023, over 600 people have already
applied to join the Parramatta Light Rail –
well over the 50 tram driver jobs currently
available.
It comes as no surprise to Light Rail tram
driver of four years and Pendle Hill local
Madhura Shamba, who has been looking
forward to transporting passengers around
Parramatta.
“When I started at Sydney Light Rail I always
knew that Parramatta Light Rail was going to
open,” she told Parra News.
“I obviously wanted to be a part of western
Sydney and be a journey-maker for them. I’ve
done a lot of travelling around Parramatta and
I would have obviously thought a tram would
make a wonderful addition to this network.”
Now working closer to home, Shamba said
she spends a lot more time with her family.
“I’m able to do the work in the morning, drop
Parramatta Light Rail vehicle drivers Madhura Shamba, Belinda Brown and Peter Le.
off the kids, pick up the kids and go for the
night shift,” she added.
“You’re having more time with family,
personally for me I used to drive to the city
in around one-and-a-half hours, that’s three
hours total, I’m just driving home now in 10
minutes.”
Fellow Light Rail vehicle driver and western
Sydney local Belinda Brown said she was after
a challenge when she first took on the role
five-and-a-half years ago.
“No day is ever the same in that vehicle, and
you’re in your own office, outside, with a view,
you’re getting people from A to B, that’s what I
like about it,” she said.
Parramatta Light Rail operational staff will
call the new state-of-the art Stabling and
Maintenance Facility in Camellia home when
the transport project officially starts running
this year.
The facility will be supported by more than
150 staff, including drivers, technicians and
maintenance crews and administration staff;
and will be complete with new facilities and
amenities for staff, including a training room
and expansive fleet maintenance workshop.
As Transport for NSW prepares to bring
more tram drivers on board ahead of the
Parramatta Light Rail start date in mid-2024,
Brown is encouraging other locals to apply
and “give it a go”.
“It’s the best job ever, you meet so many
different people doing this job, so many different
customers that get on and off the trams,
you make friends from that,” she added.
“You’re out there doing your own thing in
your own vehicle, there’s no one over your
shoulder in an office.”
Another round of tram driver jobs is
expected to become available in the coming
months, as the project moves closer to first
passenger services.
BUSINESS
WITH HANNAH STACK •
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011
Kick-off 2024 with time management
strategies for small business owners
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed if you’re
running your small business alone. But
with the right time management strategies,
you can take control of your schedule
and focus on your long-term business goals!
Here are some tips to help you get there.
Understanding the value of time
Time is a non-renewable resource, especially
for small business owners. Every
minute counts, and how you use your time
can significantly impact your business’
success. Time management is more than
getting things done in less time – it’s about
ensuring you’re working on the right things
at the right time.
Tip 1: Prioritise your tasks with the
Eisenhower Box
The Eisenhower Box is a simple yet effective
method to categorise tasks. It divides
them into four categories:
• Urgent and important (do these immediately).
• Important, but not urgent (schedule
these).
• Urgent, but not important (delegate
these).
• Neither urgent nor important (eliminate
these).
This method helps you focus on what truly
matters, ensuring you’re not wasting time on
less impactful activities.
Tip 2: Plan your day thoughtfully
Start each day with a clear plan. Allocate
specific times for different tasks, considering
when you’re most productive. For instance,
if you’re a morning person, schedule your
most challenging tasks for the morning.
This structured approach not only enhances
focus but also helps in achieving a balanced
workflow throughout the day.
Tip 3: Break down large projects into
smaller steps
Tackling a big project can be daunting.
Break it down into smaller, more manageable
tasks. Here’s a simple approach to
managing your tasks:
• Outline the main goals of a project.
• List the steps needed to achieve these
goals.
• Assign deadlines to each step to keep
track of progress.
Tip 4: Minimise distractions
Identify what typically distracts you and
find ways to minimise these interruptions.
This might mean setting specific times
to check emails or using apps to block
social media during work hours. A focused
environment is essential to enhance your
productivity and get your creative juices out!
Tip 5: Delegate and outsource to a
marketing consultant
Consider outsourcing tasks like marketing
to a consultant. A marketing consultant can
bring big business thinking to your small
business, offering tailored strategies without
the need for a large team. This approach not
only saves you time but also brings expert
knowledge without breaking the bank.
celebrated through a brand new exhibition –
‘Community Love’.
Open until June 29 at PHIVE, ‘Community
Love’ is an interactive exhibition that features
photographs of 18 local artists, educators,
business owners, social entrepreneurs,
conservationists, and volunteers.
Along with checking out the selection of
photos, visitors wi l also be able to find out
more about each of the Parrama ta locals by
scanning QR codes to see interviews, videos
One of the people captured in the series
of photos is Tahera Nassrat, a self described
“refugee girl turned boss lady,” who moved
to Australia almost 19 years ago after fleeing
Afghanistan fo lowing the Taliban coming to
Now a tax accountant and business
coach, Nassrat founded the Afghan Peace
Foundation in 2019 to help refugees and
immigrants lead self-su ficient lives. She said
it’s Parrama ta that has made her who she is
“Refugee girls from Afghanistan, firs thing
that comes to our mind ‘you are an Afghan
girl, you can’t do it’,” she said.
“In Parrama ta, I say, I can do this. You
need to live the life of Parrama ta, you need
to breathe the air of Parrama ta, it makes you
feel confident.
“It makes you feel [like] who you want to be.”
The Sun and Pluto are visiting your
sign, so you’ll be twice as much fun – and
twice as much trouble! You’re searching
for creative answers to persistent problems.
You’re also feeling adventurous
and are keen to revamp an important
area of your life, but you may meet with
some resistance as you shake loved ones
out of their comfort zones. Be inspired
by Aquarian actress Vanessa Redgrave,
“Ask the right questions if you’re to find
the right answers.”
It’s time to banish boredom and extend
yourself in challenging new directions!
Monday is your luckiest day (when Venus
trines Jupiter) and Friday is your most
creative day (when your ruler Neptune
boosts intuition and imagination). With
Mercury, Venus and Mars activating your
hopes and wishes zone, your mantra
for the moment is from Oprah Winfrey
(who turns 70 on Monday), “The biggest
adventure you can ever take is to live the
life of your dreams.”
Mercury, Venus and Mars (your ruler)
are activating your career/reputation/
life direction zone. So it’s time to focus on
where you are going, whether that’s your
job, volunteer work or your long-term
goals. Plus – with your ruler Mars linking
up with adventurous Uranus – you’re
in the mood to take a calculated risk
and do something daring. As birthday
great Oprah Winfrey observes, “Feel the
power that comes from focusing on what
excites you.”
The planets activate your hopes and
wishes and aspirations zones. So it’s a
terrific time to dream big dreams, set
inspirational goals and make fabulous
long-term plans. The Sun and Pluto are
transiting through your career zone, so
you’re keen to explore professional ideas
via talking, texting, reading, writing,
podcasting and/or posting online. But
– if you hesitate or procrastinate – then
you’ll miss a creative, transformative
opportunity when it appears.
When it comes to a close relationship, if
you are proactive, look for the best in the
person, and work hard on your communication
skills, then the partnership will
improve in leaps and bounds. Mercury,
Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Uranus are
activating your humanitarian zone,
so it’s time to roll up your sleeves and
help others. Be inspired by Oprah
Winfrey (who celebrates her birthday on
Monday), “If you want to feel good, you
have to go out and do some good.”
Find fresh ways to connect with
those around you! It’s time to launch
a joint venture and/or contribute your
considerable talents to a group, club or
organisation. The focus is on improving
partnerships (whether of the romantic,
platonic or business variety) as you
manage relationships with extra tact and
deft diplomacy. It’s also time to envision
your dreams for the future, formulate
your goals, and consolidate any travel
plans you have in the pipeline.
This week is fabulous for job offers and
promotions, professional projects, and
socialising with work mates. But Leo
Leaders need to consider, “Am I leading
others (with passion and purpose) or
just bossing them around?” Do your
best to listen closely and accommodate
the needs of those around you. When it
comes to a friend or colleague, take the
time to walk a mile in their shoes – then
you’ll have some understanding of what
they’re going through.
You’ll experience the greatest satisfaction
if you share your goals and
aspirations with other people. Collective
collaboration is the key. But are you
bored to bits with a hum-drum partnership
or your usual routine? With five
planets activating your travel and adventure
zone, faraway places beckon. So
start saving and planning your itinerary
ASAP. A stale relationship could also be
revitalised via a romantic rendezvous or
an impromptu weekend getaway.
This week’s stars are perfect for problem-solving
and creative brainstorming
– especially involving family matters.
You’ll find close partnerships work best
if you accept your relationship responsibilities
with a smile. The more you
are of service to others, the more your
connections will deepen and grow. And
– whether at home or at work – don’t be
afraid of making mistakes! As writer (and
birthday great) James Joyce observed,
“Mistakes are the portals of discovery.”
Romance is in the air, so make the
most of the magical vibes! Community
connections and educational pursuits
are also favoured. When communicating
with others, by all means be creative
but don’t get carried away and end up
distorting the facts. When it comes to
home life and domestic matters, the Sun
and Pluto intensify emotions. So it’s the
perfect time to get deep-and-meaningful
with family members, as you tell them
how much you really care.
Sagittarians are the zodiac masters of
excess. This week moderation flies out
the window as you party to the max,
spend too much and overdo just about
everything. But you’ll have a lot of fun
along the way! Lady Luck is also on your
side, but don’t sit around waiting for good
fortune to fall into your lap. Apply for that
job, enter that competition or buy that
lottery ticket! As Sagittarian great Bruce
Lee said, “To hell with circumstances …
I create opportunities.”
The Merrylands Chamber is the
main Chamber operating across the
Cumberland LGA.
The Chamber represents predominantly
small and medium sized businesses in the
LGA but also several large businesses.
This week Mercury, Venus and Mars
are all transiting through Capricorn.
So you’ll be at your clever, charismatic,
proactive best most of the time … and
your cautious, controlling worst the rest
of the time! Try to maximise the positives
and minimise the negatives. Romance,
friendship, entertainment, and creative
projects are highlighted, as you enjoy
socialising with family members and
close friends. Friday is fabulous for a
neighbourhood get-together.
The Greater Cumberland Chamber of Commerce is the main
Chamber operating across the Cumberland LGA.
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
Your Style Guide for the Eras Tour
The biggest event of the year
is officially less than a month
away.
Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour
will be hitting Accor Stadium!
If you’re one of the lucky ones
who survived the great war for
tickets (or are planning to head
in and party from the outside),
you should well and truly have
your outfit sorted. But, if you’re
like me and still can’t manage
to decide which of Swift’s eras
will inspire your look, check
out a few ideas below, complete
with product suggestions to
help make them happen.
Taylor Swift
An underrated choice for
The Eras Tour, outfits inspired
by Swift’s eponymous album,
‘Taylor Swift’ are perfect for OG
Swifties, or for anyone wanting
to go for comfort over glitz and
glam.
For this look, I would wear a
boho-style dress and cowboy
boots, topped off with Swift’s
signature curls, which you can
replicate with a thin curling
wand.
If you want to be a little bit
extra, you can also mimic
the icy blue eyeshadow that
the singer frequently donned
during this era using the
Mecca Max Zoom Flex Fluid
Liquid Shadow in Cornflower
Blue.
Fearless
Taylor Swift’s sophomore
album is the perfect source of
inspiration if you’re going for a
classic look, with a little more
sparkle.
With the ‘Fearless’ era comes
a host of iconic looks to dress up
as, including from Swift’s ‘Love
Story’ and ‘You Belong With
Me’ music videos. You could
also draw inspiration from her
tour outfits, characterised by
gold and silver fringe.
However, one of the most
important parts of any ‘Fearless’
inspired outfit is the 13
on your hand. Whilst many
choose to use nail polish, I
would stick to a long-lasting
liquid eyeshadow, like the
Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye
Shadows.
Speak Now
A strong contender for my
own outfit, Taylor Swift’s
self-written album ‘Speak
Now’ will always hold a special
place in my heart.
Of course, any hint of purple
will immediately reference this
era, so I say embrace it! Put on a
purple dress, and some purple
eyeshadow – my favourite
palette for this is the Anastasia
Beverly Hills Norvina Pro
Pigment Eyeshadow Palette
Vol 1.
Red
‘Red’ is undeniably one of
Taylor Swift’s most iconic
albums, producing hits like
‘We Are Never Ever Getting
Back Together’, ‘22’ and, later,
the 10-minute version of ‘All
Too Well’.
This era is characterised by
its black, white and red colour
scheme – and particularly red
lipstick.
Though Swift has had her
favourites over the years, the
most important thing for The
Eras Tour is to find a colour that
suits you, and a formula that
will last through three hours
of singing. My favourite is
ColourPop’s Ultra Matte Liquid
Lipstick!
1989
Arguably Swift’s biggest era,
‘1989’ is set to be a popular one
when the tour hits Sydney.
Along with plenty more
music video and red carpet
looks to choose from (some of
my favourites being her 2016
Grammy Awards set, and the
‘Blank Space’ video looks), this
era is filled with plenty of shimmer
and tassels if you want to
make a statement at the show.
Makeup-wise, you can’t go
past a cat eye. Use the Stila
Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid
Eye Liner or the Fenty Beauty
Flyliner Longwear Liquid
Eyeliner if you want it to last
through the ‘Folklore’ set.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
KEEPING
THE SPIRIT
OF THE BEE
GEES ALIVE
CASSIDY PEARCE
The Bee Gees are undeniably one
of Australia’s greatest adopted exports,
producing hits like ‘Stayin’
Alive’ and ‘More Than a Woman’.
Now, a tribute band supported by
the trio’s sister Lesley Evans and niece Deborah
McLane is making its way to Penrith, along
with a very special guest.
The Best of The Bee Gees has been around
for 26 years, bringing the band’s best work to
the stage once more, but it wasn’t until a few
years later that Colin Petersen got involved.
Petersen was the band’s original drummer,
playing on several of their early albums. It’s
because of this that after being connected
with The Best of The Bee Gees through their
manager, he admits he was hesitant to get involved.
“I was humming and harring about it, because
when you’ve been part of the real deal,
you certainly don’t want to be a part of something
that’s mediocre,” he said.
But, after seeing them play in Townsville, Petersen
said he couldn’t deny their talent, and
immediately wanted to join.
“I heard bits and pieces of the rehearsal,
and then when the show began, by about the
third song I’m thinking to myself, ‘Bloody hell,
these guys are really great’,” he said.
“I didn’t hesitate, I said whatever part I could
play, that would be terrific.”
Petersen said that originally, the idea was
for him to just provide anecdotes about what
it was like to be in the band, relaying stories
throughout. But, eventually, the band’s hassling
to get him to play again paid off, seeing
Petersen sit behind a drum kit for the first time
in 40 years.
However, he said it was no easy journey.
“I played along to CD’s – they’re great to
practice with because if you make a mistake,
you can just go back to the beginning again,”
he said.
“I didn’t even unpack the crash cymbals or
the ride cymbal sometimes, I just unpacked
the high hat, the snare and bass drum, and I
just thought to myself, ‘That’s the basics, and
if you can’t feel comfortable just playing that,
there’s no point going on’.”
Petersen played for an hour to non-Bee Gees
songs before his ‘mind was exploding’, stating
it took him just about a month of daily practice
before he felt comfortable playing with
the band.
“That was a lovely experience, because it
had been so long, and now I’m feeling fairly
relaxed and I really enjoy it,” he said.
Petersen said that over the course of his time
with The Best of The Bee Gees, they’ve reshuffled
the set regularly to give repeat audience
members some variety. This means hearing
new stories from the drummer – some even
from after his time with the band.
“I focus my little anecdotes to the time I was
with the band, because it’s genuine recollections,
but with the new show I think I might
make some little comments on a few things
that they did later on in their career,” he said.
Petersen said he can’t wait to pay western
TV NEWS
Ê New SBS dating series ‘The Matchmakers’,
which profiles three of Australia’s most
successful cultural matchmakers, will premiere
on Wednesday, February 14 at 8.40pm.
‘The Matchmakers’ goes behind the scenes
of Australia’s traditional Jewish, Muslim and
Hindu matchmakers as they help singles in
the universal quest for love in contemporary
Australia. If you can’t be bothered to wait
weekly, all episodes will drop on SBS on
Demand immediately. Phew!
Ê The new season of ‘Australian Idol’
kicked off this week with Kyle Sandilands,
Marcia Hines and Amy Shark in the judges’
chairs. It’s set to be a huge few months of TV,
with ‘Australian Survivor’ and ‘Married at
First Sight’ also getting underway this week
too. I think ‘MAFS’ will reign supreme, but I
expect the other two to battle it out all year
for second place in the ratings. It should be a
great race!
Ê We’re inching closer to the premiere
of Stan Original Series ‘The Tattooist of
Auschwitz’ on Thursday, May 2. The six-part
series, based on the international best-sell-
JANUARY 30 7.30PM
AUSTRALIAN IDOL, SEVEN
MAY 2
THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ, STAN
ing novel by New Zealand author Heather
Morris, is inspired by the real-life story of Lali
and Gita Sokolov, who met while prisoners
in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration
camp during the Holocaust. Images from the
set were released last week, and the series is
looking very authentic.
Ê The final 10-episode season of ‘Curb Your
Enthusiasm’ premieres on Foxtel and Binge
next Monday, February 5 at 9.30pm. Starring
‘Seinfeld’ creator Larry David as an over-thetop
version of himself, the iconic Emmy and
Golden Globe-winning comedy series offers
a tongue-in-cheek depiction of the writer /
producer / comedian’s fictionalised life.
Ê The second season of the US version of
‘Love on the Spectrum’ is now streaming on
Netflix. Based on the hit Aussie series, the
show follows people on the autism spectrum
as they navigate the world of dating and
relationships.
Ê Great news for sport lovers, with Kayo
launching 4K from February 29. Customers
on Kayo Basic will have access to over 1000
hours of 4K content from some of their favourite
sports across the year including NRL,
AFL, Cricket and Netball. Kayo Sports is also
changing its subscription packages from February
14. Kayo One will offer 50-plus sports
and High Definition for $25 per month (no
price change), and Kayo Basic, rises $5 to $35
per month, with access to all 50-plus sports
and 4K from February 29. The Premium
package, currently $35 per month, will cease
to be offered.
Ê Foxtel and Binge series, ‘Julia’, has been
axed after two seasons. The US dramedy was
based on the life of chef Julia Child.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
THE TRUTH BEHIND NEW CAR SERVICING
The Australian Competition and
Consumer Commission (ACCC)
have recently provided updated
information regarding consumer rights and
servicing cars under warranty.
There is no requirement under the
Australian Consumer Law (ACL) for a vehicle
to be serviced by an authorised dealer in order
for the consumer guarantees to apply.
FAQs
What is a warranty?
A warranty is a voluntary promise offered by
the person or business who sold the product or
service to you. A warranty is in addition to any
rights you have under the Australian Consumer
Law (ACL). You can visit the ACCC website for
more information about warranties.
A dealer told me I’ll void my warranty if
they do not service my car, is that right?
There is NO requirement to service your car
at a manufacturer’s dealership to preserve:
• Any manufacturer’s warranty (that may
apply to your vehicle)
• Any state or territory based statutory
warranty (that may apply to your vehicle);
or
• Your rights to Consumer Guarantees
(formerly known as implied statutory
warranties)
Can my preferred repairer stamp my
logbook?
The logbook in some vehicles includes
a box which indicates that it should be
stamped by an ‘authorised dealer’. The
ACCC have confirmed that even if a logbook
is labelled in this way, an independent
repairer may sign or stamp the relevant
page of your service logbook (once they have
completed the service) without it affecting
the manufacturer’s warranty, provided all
essential requirements are met.
These essential requirements are as follows:
• The repairer must use quality spare parts
from reputable suppliers
• Perform the service in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions
• Staff must be trained, supervised and
suitably qualified
• Fluids and lubricants must meet
manufacturer’s specifications
At Angus Car Service we only use quality
parts, approved fluids/lubricants, our
staff are fully qualified and we follow the
manufacturer’s service schedule.
How long should my Consumer Guarantees
apply?
It’s a common misconception that your
Consumer Guarantees have a specific time
limit. Whilst a manufacturer may choose to
put a time limit on their warranty, this cannot
replace your Consumer Guarantees.
Protection provided under Australian
Consumer Law will take into account the
purchase price, realistic time expectations
of when a failure may occur, any advertising
claims and the conditions under which a
vehicle should operate.
A manufacturer’s warranty is in addition to,
not in lieu of your Consumer Guarantees.
What if I have a warranty claim?
If you have a warrantable defect it may be
a condition of the warranty that any work to
rectify it is carried out at the Manufacturers
Dealer workshop. Your independent
mechanical workshop may also be able to
guide you through this process.
Will having my car regularly serviced
preserve my resale value?
Evidence of a well maintained car will
usually augur well for upholding resale value.
Borrello strikes long-term deal
NATHAN TAYLOR
He’s been on the sidelines for
most of the season through
injury, but Western Sydney
are standing by their man – re-signing
Socceroos forward Brandon Borrello
on a three-year deal.
Borrello returned to the domestic
competition in 2022 with the
Wanderers after an extensive career in
Germany at the likes of Kaiserslautern,
Freiberg, Fortuna Dusseldorf and
Dynamo Dresden where he played for
over five years.
The forward instantly made an
impact at the Wanderers and won the
club’s Rod Allen Media Player of the
Year Award, Members Player of the
Year Award, Golden Boot and prestigious
Wanderers Medal in his first
season at the club.
Borrello also returned to the
Socceroos squad thanks to his sensational
form at the Wanderers and his
passion for the club and region saw
him win over the hearts of the Wanderers
faithful.
Wanderers coach Marko Rudan said
he was proud to retain the 28-year-old
for the next three seasons.
“We are very proud as a football club
that Brandon has re-signed on a longterm
deal that will see him at the club
Brandon Borrello will remain a Wanderer until the end of the 2026/27 season.
for many seasons to come,” he said.
“Brandon has not only been an influential
player of this club on the field,
but off the field where he has embodied
what it truly means to represent this
club and region.
“While this season hasn’t gone the
way that he has certainly planned,
we have put our full support behind
Brandon and are excited to see him
return back to the field in the months
to come.”
Borrello thanked the club for their
belief in him and the extension.
“I’ve fallen back in love with football at
the Wanderers and I cannot thank the
club enough for the way that they have
not only welcomed me, but embraced
me as one of their family,” he said.
“I’d like to also thank head coach
Marko Rudan, for not only bringing
me back to the A-Leagues, but for his
mentorship and guidance that has not
only helped me develop as a player and
also as a person.
“The belief that the club has had in me
has driven me to give everything I’ve
got for this football club, the region and
the western Sydney community and I
can’t wait to get back onto the field to
show everyone what I’ve got.”
Borrello suffered a foot fracture
during the Sydney Derby in Round 5.
It’s anticipated that he will return later
this season.
