Message from Mayor Lake
Maltese Community Council of NSW
I attended an Australia Day event at The Holroyd Centre,
held annually by the Maltese Community Council (MCC)
of NSW. The event was held to celebrate the Maltese
Australians who received Order of Australia Honours and
to acknowledge the community’s contributions to Australia.
There was a showcase of Maltese heritage with musical performances,
traditional food stalls, arts and crafts exhibitions and family entertainment.
I recently attended the St John
Ambulance Granville Combined
Division Annual Awards held
at Regents Park. 14 people
were recognised at the awards
ceremony for their dedication,
hard work and contribution to
volunteering with the St John
Ambulance service over the year.
The awards included Adult of the
Year, Cadet of the Year, Junior of
the Year, and an External Special
Ambulance Granville Division has
150 members and will be celebrating its 110th anniversary this year. The unit has
the biggest Junior program in NSW with some volunteers starting as young as
eight years old. Congratulations to the award winners, and thank you to all the
volunteers for your service to the community.
The Tamil Pongal Festival 2024
I recently attended The Tamil Pongal Festival 2024
at Pendle Hill, which hosted more than 60 Tamil
Organisations across NSW. The festival, centered
around Thai Pongal - Festival of thanksgiving to
nature, has profound cultural importance as it
signifies the first day of the Tamil Calendar. This
unique festival not only highlighted the rich cultural
heritage but also showcased cultural diversity,
traditions, rituals and the spirit of togetherness
within the Tamil community in NSW.
