LOCAL NEWS
Council strives for
more transparency
ELLIE BUSBY
A
push for local Councillors
to be transparent when it
comes to meetings with
property developers and lobbyists
has been labelled as “crucial”.
City of Parramatta Council has
supported a motion to establish
a stronger lobbying policy, over
concerns the community feels
like they’re being kept in the dark
when it comes to decision-making.
Independent Councillor Kellie
Darley, who moved the motion,
said she has seen unethical lobbying
a “number of times” during
her time on Council.
“This Notice of Motion is really
about trust and perception, it’s so
critical for a healthy democracy
that our community trusts in the
integrity of the decisions Council
is making,” she said.
“Just in the short two years I have
been a Councillor, I have directly
observed several incidents of
what I would classify as unethical
lobbying.”
The motion calls for City of
Parramatta Councillors and the
CEO to publicly disclose their
meetings with registered lobbyists
and property developers – bringing
the local representatives
in line with State and Federal
Government officials.
It also moves that Council update
its lobbying policy to incorporate
the quarterly reporting of meetings
with registered lobbyists and
property developers.
Adding that City of Parramatta’s
current policy is written more “as
a guide,” Darley said Councillors
must do better when it comes to
disclosing these meetings.
“There is no requirement for us
to disclose, it talks about appropriate,
inappropriate lobbying,
but again there’s no requirement
for us to do the proactive level of
transparency that I believe our
community expects,” she added.
“We need to make sure that
lobbying is fair and doesn’t undermine
the public confidence in
impartial decision making.
“The suspicions that the community
have are going to continue
unless we’re transparent.”
Council documents said the
Independent Commission Against
Corruption (ICAC) has recommended
on "multiple occasions"
that the Lobbying of Government
Officials Act (2011) be extended
to include Local Government
Officials.
Labor Councillor Cameron
Maclean also backed the call for
more transparency.
“Anything we can do to improve
the way in which our community
observes our decisions is a good
thing,” he said.
“Clearly there has been a repetition
of different scandals over the
last 30 years that have made these
recommendations necessary.”
The motion comes after City
of Canada Bay Council Mayor
Angelo Tsirekas and others were
investigated over planning decisions
dating back to 2015 – ultimately
leading to Tsirekas’ recent
dismissal from public office.
Parramatta Council will now
write to the Minister for Local
Government Ron Hoenig, outlining
its support for increasing
integrity in Local Government by
urgently adopting ICAC’s recommendations.
What do you think about the
decision? Let us know at news@
Facebook is playing mind games
Meta has every right not to pay news publishers
for content the news providers themselves
put on its platforms, but it should also
be careful not to mislead the market.
Meta continues to argue that professionally
created news only accounts for about three
per cent of the content consumed by users on
Facebook.
But Facebook chooses what you see on your
feeds through its algorithms, and has significantly
reduced the reach of news providers.
It’s pretty obvious that if you show users
less news, they’ll consume less.
That’s literally like us choosing to run no
sport in our paper and then putting out a statistic
saying our readers are consuming less
sports news. Well, duh! It is a curated stat
that would only have relevance if Facebook
still provided users with the ability to see
their feeds chronologically, incorporating
every page and individual they follow.
Meta and Facebook has convinced itself it
no longer needs news. I’m not so sure, and I
think it’s on a dangerous road.
We must hope against the odds
Sometimes it takes a single shocking and
unacceptable tragedy to bring a situation into
stark relief. The deaths of seven aid workers
in Gaza last week – part of the World Central
Kitchen organisation – has highlighted the
selfless courage of people who enter troubled
areas of the world when others flee.
Quite rightly, Australian Zomi Frankcom
and her colleagues, three from Britain, one
from Poland, an American-Canadian and a
Palestinian interpreter, have been described
as “the best of humanity”. They had been delivering
food in central Gaza, helping to avert
what the United Nations and other agencies
warn is an impending famine.
Killed in a night-time drone strike – acknowledged
by the Israeli government as a
“grave mistake” that followed “misidentification
in very complex conditions” – they join
more than 30,000 Palestinians including 200
aid workers and 100 journalists who have perished
since the October 7 attacks by Hamas.
By the end of the week, Israel’s military said
it had dismissed two officers and reprimanded
three others for their role in killing the aid
workers.
As well as embarrassing the military, this incident
has shone a light on the systemic failure
to provide safe humanitarian access in Gaza –
and to take far greater care in avoiding civilian
casualties.
All diplomatic niceties are off when international
citizens are killed. Both Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister
Penny Wong stiffened their language to reflect
Australia’s “outrage”. In the same spirit as Tony
Abbott’s repudiation of Vladimir Putin following
the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight
17, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
was specifically singled out for insensitivity
in professing to observe “this happens in
wartime”.
Political ground is also shifting rapidly in the
US, where President Joe Biden told Netanyahu
that continued support for the war against
Hamas will require concrete action to protect
civilians and aid workers. His Republican opponent
Donald Trump bluntly said “Israel is
losing the PR war, they’re losing it big”. Netanyahu
has responded by promising to reopen
key corridors to allow aid into northern Gaza,
including the Erez crossing and Ashdod port.
Six months after the October 7 attacks, which
killed 1,200 people in Israel’s single biggest
loss of life since the Holocaust – Israel has
managed to squander much sympathy and
goodwill. Britain’s Independent newspaper
spoke for many last week when it headlined its
front page with a little girl amidst the rubble in
Gaza and the simple headline “Enough”.
Even today, from the distance of Australia, it
feels important to restate some truths. Israel
has a right to defend itself. Israel has a right
to exist. Any country, when faced with such a
murderous, cynical, nihilistic incursion on its
own territory, would respond forcefully, not
just to deter future attacks but to prevent them
from ever happening again.
On October 7, hundreds of people were not
only killed but taken hostage.
Business...............................................21-22
They remain in captivity and they need to be
released now.
I was not one who initially believed that
calls for a ceasefire in Gaza were realistic – not
without ensuring that Hamas was unable to
reconstitute and pose a threat.
We have reached the point where pauses
in fighting are needed to deliver aid, as well
as to negotiate hostage releases and swaps. I
find myself agreeing with British Foreign Secretary
David Cameron who has spoken about
the Gaza conflict with a clarity and conviction
absent from most other world leaders.
Writing in The Times, he observed that a temporary
cessation in hostilities could lay the
foundations to build a lasting peace. Cameron
set out two conditions – for Hamas leaders to
leave Gaza and for its “infrastructure of terror”
to be dismantled. “We would be ending the
war by political rather than military means.
This remains the right approach”.
Currently, both Hamas and Netanyahu block
a two-state solution. Moderate forces on both
sides must prevail, including a reinvigorated
Palestinian Authority. Transitioning from a
Hamas-led Gaza will require vigorous diplomacy
from key Middle Eastern and international
powers.
Most Australians don’t want to take sides in
this decades-long conflict. Both the Israeli and
Palestinian people are our friends, custodians
of some of the world’s most sacred lands.
What is happening today is a tragedy but those
with a vision for security, justice and peace
can never lose hope.
Court defies original Council
call and will allow new centre
ELLIE BUSBY
A
plan for a new 83-person childcare
facility in Northmead, which
was originally rejected by City of
Parramatta Council, has now been given
new life by the Land and Environment Court.
Despite initial concerns the proposed development
was not in “the public’s interest”, a
plan to construct a two-storey childcare
centre at 11-13 Campbell Street, Northmead,
will now go ahead.
It will see the amalgamation of two lots,
which are currently occupied by a residential
dwelling at 11 Campbell Street and vacant
land at 13 Campbell Street.
Operating Monday to Friday, from 7am
to 6pm, the centre will include basement
parking for 22 vehicles, including 10 staff car
spaces.
13 staff members will be employed at the
facility, which will feature four indoor play
spaces, three outdoor play areas, a kitchen,
laundry, staff room and cot room across the
basement and two floors.
The facility will have space for 45 children
between the ages of three and six-years-old,
30 for two to three-year-olds and eight children
between zero and two-years-old.
Located opposite the Northmead Shopping
Village, with the Northmead Creative and
An artist’s impression of the Northmead childcare centre.
Performing Arts High School just 200m east of
the site, the childcare centre will be built in a
busy area of Northmead.
The proposal was originally refused by
Parramatta Council in October last year over
concerns it would have an adverse impact on
the surrounding built environment, unacceptable
pedestrian safety impacts and fail to
provide adequate parking spaces.
“The development is considered an overdevelopment
of the site as the operation of
the facility results in undesirable amenity
impacts for adjoining properties, and unacceptable
pedestrian safety impacts within the
locality,” a Council report said.
However, amended plans led to the Land
and Environment Court giving the proposed
development the tick of approval for construction.
“The Council has considered the amended
plans and additional material provided by the
applicant in response to the contentions and
is now satisfied that the proposed development
is appropriate for a grant of development
consent,” Land and Environment Court document
said.
“The development will have an acceptable
impact on the amenity of surrounding properties
and the locality in terms of acoustics,
privacy and streetscape.”
A slew of recommendations have also been
made to help mitigate noise from impacting
the surrounding area, including limiting
outdoor play to a maximum of four hours a
day, sound barrier walls and moving crying
children indoors.
Teacher trio eager to
ELLIE BUSBY
Introducing the next generation
of teachers: Three young women
who went to school in the local
in western Sydney.
For aspiring teachers Natasha Le,
“Teachers have played a really big
role in my life, they’ve continuously
helped their students to do the best
they can and they try to be there for
them, and I think that really drove my
passion to go into teaching,” Du said.
“I liked how they helped me become
Despite having only just started
her prac teaching, Le said she loves
“This is kind of cliché, but I really
“Seeing little kids grow and understand
them in a way that’s meaningful,”
“I want the same impact that some
Welcoming them to the school,
Principal John Goh said prac teaching
at Merrylands East Public School
hugely important for those looking to
“It’s a great opportunity for our
pre-service teachers to learn about
the complexities of our students and
working with, in particular, refugee
students in our school and students
whose English is not necessarily their
first language,” he said.
“I’m really in debt to our public
school teachers who take pre-service
teachers or encourage senior students
into the teaching profession.”
The beginning of Le, Du and Wong’s
teaching career comes after the NSW
Teachers Federation agreed to a new
pay deal from the State Government
in September last year, making NSW
teachers one of the best paid in the
country.
Natasha Le, Ashley Wong and Flora Du are excited to pursue a career
Cottage celebrates bicentenary
Hambledon Cottage will be celebrating 200 years of history this Saturday.
ELLIE BUSBY
Hambledon Cottage,
one of Parramatta’s
oldest homes, is set
to celebrate an impressive
200 years of heritage and
history.
It’s no small feat for the
colonial Georgian cottage,
which has managed to
survive multiple threats of
redevelopment to mark its
Bicentenary on Saturday,
April 13.
Built in the 1820s for
pastoralists John and
Elizabeth Macarthur as
part of their Elizabeth Farm
Estate, Hambledon Cottage
was later home to their son,
Major General Sir Edward
Macarthur, Commander
of the British Forces in
Australia.
It would also later be home
to Dr Matthew Anderson,
one of Parramatta Hospital’s
first surgeons, as well as
former Governess Penelope
Lucas.
Now operating as a house
museum, the heritage-listed
cottage brought in a record
4,500 visitors in the last year
alone.
Calling it a significant
milestone for a remarkable
Parramatta landmark,
Parramatta and District
Historical Society (PDHS)
president Les Fenech said
the team at the cottage are
looking forward to continuing
to serve the community.
“I’m personally really
excited and pleased for
future generations that
it exists here today, for
the future people of
Parramatta,” he told Parra
News.
“We hope to continue to
provide the services we do
to the community, we’re
open Fridays, Saturdays
and Sundays for the general
public on most days. We also
provide an active school
program, which is well
patronised, we have many
thousands of children visit.
“We’ve been doing this
for at least 110 years, but
we’ll try to adapt to what
is contemporary in the
community.”
The interior of Hambledon Cottage.
PDHS Vice President Ken
Smith said Hambledon
Cottage has overcome a lot
of challenges throughout its
lifetime.
“[Hambledon Cottage]
went through a whole range
of owners until just before
the Second World War,” he
added.
“In 1940, it was bought by
Goodyear Tyre Company,
who wanted to knock it
down and build a tyre
factory here. That was
rejected by the community
and by the Cumberland
County Council, they built
the tyre factory elsewhere
and it remained in-tact.”
Hambledon Cottage
will officially celebrate its
bicentenary with a new
exhibition, live music, craft
and heritage stalls, trade
demonstrations, entertainment,
food stalls and cottage
open house this Saturday,
from 10am to 4pm.
These celebrations will
then be followed up with
a week-long program of
historic talks and walks at
the cottage and children’s
activities to coincide with
the school holidays.
City of Parramatta Lord
Mayor Pierre Esber said
the momentous occasion
will give the community a
chance to experience the
cottage’s rich history.
“Hambledon Cottage is
one of our oldest homes and
a much-loved landmark
in the heart of our city,” he
said.
“These community
celebrations hosted by the
Parramatta and District
Historical Society are a
chance for local families to
experience what life was
like here 200 years ago.”
NSW Governor Margaret
Beazley will also attend the
event to unveil a special
commemorative plaque
and launch a new book
titled, Celebrating 200
Years – Hambledon Cottage
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011
The 3G shutdown: A looming
disruption for local small businesses
A
major change to Australia’s mobile
network landscape has begun
with the shutdown of 3G services.
The shutdown of 3G, launched in 2003,
paves the way for today’s faster 4G and 5G
technologies. Vodafone was the first to
turn off its 3G network earlier this year and
Telstra’s shutdown is scheduled for June
30. The Optus shutdown will commence in
September.
Local Small businesses need to be aware of
potential disruptions these closures might
bring to their operation. The concern lies
with businesses still using 3G-dependent
equipment like EFTPOS machines, security
systems, IOT, industrial and automation
devices. Without upgrades, these could
become inoperable after the shutdown,
leading to costly downtime and impacting
daily operations. This is not limited to business
either, at home things like medical alert
devices or baby monitors are also at risk.
Regional businesses and those areas where
black spots exist, might face an additional
challenge. While major carriers are rolling
out 4G and 5G networks, complete coverage
across the vast Australian landscape
might not be immediate. This could result
in patchy mobile connectivity, hindering
communication and potentially affecting
mobile payment options for customers.
There are steps small businesses can take
to mitigate these risks. A crucial first step is
taking stock. Conduct a thorough inventory
check to identify any critical devices that
rely on 3G connectivity.
Next, proactive communication with
your telecommunications provider is key.
Discuss upgrade options for your 3G-reliant
equipment. Providers might offer solutions
tailored to business needs, including
replacement devices or software updates.
Finally, investigate 4G and 5G network
coverage in your area. This will give you a
clearer picture of any potential connectivity
issues and allow you to plan accordingly.
Early preparation can minimise disruption
and ensure a smooth transition for your
business.
The 3G shutdown signifies a necessary step
towards a more advanced mobile network
infrastructure. However, for small businesses,
vigilance and proactive planning
are essential to navigate the transition and
avoid unnecessary hiccups. By taking stock
of their equipment and collaborating with
their providers, Australian small businesses
can emerge from this change poised for the
future.
At Sydney Building Approvals
Centre (SBAC) we strive to make
the approval process easier with our
personalised approach, friendly staff
the building industry.
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
The Aquarian buzz word for the week
is Communication (with a capital ‘C’).
Monday night’s Solar Eclipse stimulates
your neighbourhood and conversation
zone, so expect increased social interaction
and educational activities within
your local community. When it comes
to an ongoing neighbourhood problem,
think global and act local. Wisdom for
the week is from fashion designer (and
birthday great) Vivienne Westwood,
“The sexiest people are thinkers.”
Mars and Saturn link up in your sign
(on Wednesday/Thursday) which could
stymie progress, squash confidence and
bring you down. However – fortunately
– the Solar Eclipse and Venus stimulate
your self-esteem zone. So steer clear of
criticism (in person and online); avoid
getting caught up in a negative self-talk
loop; and stop worrying about the qualities
you perceive you don’t have. It’s time
to celebrate your strengths and be your
Number One fan!
Monday night’s Total Solar Eclipse is
in your sign which boosts energy levels,
turbo-charges your motivation and
increases your determination. If you’re
lacking confidence (and feeling more
like a meek lamb than a courageous
ram) then spend time with an uber Aries
friend. Hopefully, some of their chutzpah
and self-assurance will rub off on
you. But Mercury is also activating your
sign, so slow down and think (carefully)
before you speak and act!
as you focus attention on helping those
around you. The Solar Eclipse lights up
your humanitarian zone, so being of
service to others sees you glow on the
inside. But with Mercury in retrograde
mode, take the time to double-check all
information and communicate clearly.
On Wednesday and Thursday, tread
carefully with family and friends.
Mercury is your ruling planet and it’s
in retrograde mode until April 25. So it’s
not a good time to gossip; sign contracts;
start a job or business; buy a phone,
computer, car or home; launch a website;
install new software; go on an important
business trip or embark on a big overseas
holiday. However, it IS a good time to
do anything with an ‘re’ in front of it
… revise, rehearse, review, remember,
return, recover and reconnect. And
make sure you double-check everything.
Avoid being a lonesome Crab! Professional
projects and creative collaborations
with colleagues are favoured,
as you spark ideas off each other and
pool your talents to produce something
special. The Total Solar Eclipse and
Venus increase enthusiasm and encourage
rebooting a rickety work relationship
that’s been experiencing problems. But
be careful you don’t get into an emotional
stew over a festering secret, a broken
promise, or a breach of trust.
Are you a Lion who’s feeling rather
restless? On Monday night there’s a fiery
Solar Eclipse in your adventure zone,
which highlights holidays, adventure,
exploration and exciting beginnings.
But retrograde Mercury is also there,
which could complicate travel plans,
limit patience, shorten timelines and
lengthen frustrations. So you’ll need to
be on your best behaviour if you want to
cruise through the week! Clever Cats will
check, double-check, listen and learn.
Mercury (your boss planet) is in retrograde
mode until April 25. So – even
though there’s a New Moon/Solar Eclipse
on Monday night – it’s not an appropriate
week to expedite tasks, initiate ideas or
race ahead with projects. Instead, use the
time wisely to remember, revise, research
and review. Be patient, pace yourself and
move ahead slowly in planned stages.
Your motto for the moment is from Ralph
Waldo Emerson, “Adopt the pace of
nature: her secret is patience.”
With Venus and the Solar Eclipse in
your relationship zone, you’re keen to
motivate, encourage and inspire others.
But Mercury is retrograde, so you’ll need
to utilise your well-developed diplomatic
skills. Librans are the fashionistas
of the zodiac, so it’s up to you to lead the
way towards a more sustainable future.
Wisdom for the week comes from fashion
designer/innovator (and birthday great)
Vivienne Westwood, “Buy less, choose
well, make it last.”
Jump off the comfy couch! The Solar
Eclipse (in Aries) encourages you to be
proudly proactive as you get your body
moving, set challenging daily goals and
then actively pursue them. Not sure how
to do that? Try rubbing shoulders with
your kickass Aries friends … they’ll show
you how to crank up your motivation and
energise your enthusiasm. But Mercury
is in retrograde mode, so be careful you
don’t stir up trouble and play power
games.
With your sparky Sagittarian mojo and
momentum running on high speed,
you’re ready to rock and roll! Monday
night’s fiery Solar Eclipse activates your
leisure and pleasure zone, so all forms of
entertainment will appeal as you socialise
with friends and enjoy yourself to the
max. However – with Mercury reversing
through your friendship zone – be
careful you don’t say the wrong thing to
the wrong person. Think things through
before you speak.
The Solar Eclipse promises a fresh
start involving family plans, a domestic
situation, or a new housemate. But the
Mars/Saturn conjunction – and retro
Mercury – could delay a project, exacerbate
a misunderstanding, or frustrate
a financial situation. So proceed with
a pragmatic attitude plus plenty of
caution. Family and friends are the ones
who matter. As Michelle Obama (a fellow
Capricorn) observes, “Surround yourself
with people who will make you better.”
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
Save or splurge? Look good and
save during tight financial times
With the cost-of-living at an
all-time high, you wouldn’t be
alone if you’ve decided it’s time
to put a little more thought
into what you’re spending your
hard-earned cash on.
Though some would consider
beauty to be a category where
it’s necessary to splurge, I’m
here to tell you it doesn’t have
to be, with so many good
quality, affordable options out
there that you don’t need to be
shopping high-end for every
step of your routine.
If you’re having trouble
deciding where to splurge, and
where to save, here are my top
tips.
Primer: Save
This may be a hot take, but
unless you have a specific skin
concern you want to amend,
you don’t need to be using a
high-end primer – you probably
don’t need a primer at all.
Though using a
nice primer can
definitely
make a
difference
in the
way your
m a k e u p
looks, if you’re in a
pinch, a good skincare routine
or a more affordable primer
can get the job done. I personally
like the Maybelline Fit Me
Matte + Poreless Primer, or
the e.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer
for a more flawless, shine-free
complexion.
Foundation and Concealer:
Save
Though this may not be
possible if you have sensitive
skin, or if you’re tricky to shade
match, I do believe that you
can save on your foundation
and concealer. the Maybelline
Instant Age Rewind concealer
is one of my favourites!
Setting Powder: Save
Though I am a fan of high-end
setting powders, I do think this
is another area where you can
save if necessary – especially if
your skin is on the drier side.
My favourite affordable
option is the Maybelline Fit Me
Loose Finishing Powder.
Blush, Bronzer and Highlighter:
Splurge
Whilst you can definitely
get away with affordable face
products, I do think spending
a little bit extra in this category
is worthwhile – especially if
you’re saving on your other
base products.
If you’re wanting to splurge
on quality, you can do it in a
more affordable way by keeping
an eye out for a face palette
that you love, so you get more
product for less. I really love
the Hourglass palettes and
sets when they’re available, as
well as the One/Size blush and
bronzer trios for some variety.
Eyeshadow: Splurge
Eyeshadow in particular is
one place where I think it’s
necessary to splurge if possible.
You just can’t get the same
quality in affordable palettes!
To spend your money effectively,
find a palette you love
and know you’ll use every
shade in, or invest in a lid shade
or glitter to use with bronzer in
the crease.
Mascara: Save
It’s no secret that
there are plenty of
amazing affordable
mascaras on the
market right now.
If you haven’t tried
them already, I
recommend giving
the Maybelline
Lash Sensational or Essence
Lash Princess False Lash Effect
mascaras a go.
Eyebrow Products: Save
No matter if you use an
eyebrow pencil, gel, or pomade,
there’s a great, affordable
option out there for you.
The Mecca Max BROW GURU
Power Brow Strong Hold Gel is
perfect for no makeup-makeup
days.
Hair Products: Somewhere
in the middle!
Though I’m not generally a
fan of super affordable
hair products, I do think
it’s possible to find a
middle ground. Opt for
Shark tools instead of
Dyson, or switch from
Kérastase to Redken if
you want to save without
compromising the look
and health of your hair.
Experience the thrill of coming face to face with the
King of beasts!
Zambi Wildlife Retreat is an exclusive and unique
Not for Profit Animal Sanctuary,
set in beautifully landscaped grounds.
A tour of the retreat allows you the opportunity to get up
close and personal with some amazing animals and
learn about their history and species. Zambi only
allows limited visitors each week and you will
need to book your spot on our website booking
page here: www.zambi.org/bookings
The bookings are only available for a total of
7 guests and includes a tour of the retreat
with an experienced guide where you will get
to hand feed the macaw parrots and baboon
monkeys. Complimentary hot and cold drinks
and light snacks are included in the cost.
There is also the opportunity to add on animal
encounters such as hand feeding the big cats
and meeting the meerkats and little marmoset
monkeys. This can be booked at the same time
as your tour or added during your visit.
Entry is 9 years of age and older and a
further age restriction of 12 years and
older will apply to hand feeding the
big cats.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
FROM VEGAS
TO THE WEST!
CASSIDY PEARCE
Though he admits that being involved
in a Bee Gees tribute show
was never his goal initially, Michael
Clift said he saw the signs
when the reception he got when
playing their songs at corporate gigs was so
positive, prompting him to start up a band for
a bit of fun.
“It was never meant to be our main focus, we
just thought it was a brilliant idea,” he said.
But, when people started liking it, Clift recalls
conversations starting around who they
wanted to be. Was it a matter of singing a few
covers, or going all-in on authenticity?
“We soon realised that we needed to put
more effort into it, so then it’s a case of, how
much effort do you put into it, is it really worth
it?” he said.
“It was then that we decided that it’s a great
idea, and it really deserved our respect and
our 110 per cent.”
It was then that Clift decided to become Barry
Gibb, taking the time to master those high
notes, and the quintessential Bee Gees sound.
To no-one’s surprise, this was when people
started to respond, allowing Clift to take the
show internationally. But, a tour in the US is
when things truly changed.
“The US is a tough market, you have to be on
your A game to nail it, and I think at that point
when we did that and we got back, we felt like
we did a good job, and we just had a different
confidence,” he said.
Clift and the The Australian Bee Gees Show
ended up scoring a Vegas residency, which
has seen them perform to thousands, and
continue to do so into next year.
According to Clift, this has been a phenomenal
journey.
“If I wake up one morning and think about
it, you think, ‘This can’t be real’, because we’ve
been here for 13 years,” he said.
“We’re in Excalibur six nights a week, we’ve
done over 4000 shows. People come to hear
the Bee Gees’ music, and we deliver! It’s like
sprinting a marathon. We don’t rest.”
This month, Clift will be heading back to
Australia for the first time since before the
pandemic, and he’s bringing the band along
with him for a few shows.
“It’s a big deal for us to come back to Australia,
especially for me because I’ve been in Vegas
for 13 years. My family is here, my friends
are here, so it’s a beautiful thing,” he said.
According to Clift, the show which will be
taking to the Evan Theatre stage later this
month is much the same as their Vegas stuff,
allowing for Penrith locals to get a taste of
Vegas, and a great Aussie success story, right
here at home.
“For us, it’s a celebration of the whole catalogue
of the Bee Gees, with less focus on the
‘60s and ‘70s,” he said.
“We’re taking the Vegas show on the road,
and that’s what we love about it. When we say
‘direct from Vegas’, it’s direct from Vegas.”
The Australian Bee Gees Show will be on
at Panthers on Thursday, August 18 at 8pm.
Faith drives Scotty’s new track
Scotty McCreery (pictured above) has
dropped a great new song, ‘Red Letter Blueprint’
– and it’s very much driven by his faith.
The song is off his forthcoming album,
‘Rise & Fall’, due out next month.
“It’s held me up during my lows, and it’s
been with me when I celebrate my highs,” he
said.
“This new album was influenced by the
rises and falls in my life through the years, so
I wanted to sing about what sustains me. I’ve
featured songs about my wife and my son,
but I also wanted to share a song about my
faith. I hope it is comforting to anyone who
may need to hear these words.”
self-love in his tongue-in-check single, ‘Pool
Party For One’ featuring Andrew Swift.
What started as an April Fool’s joke
between Dantier and fellow country songsmith
Swift, quickly snowballed into a very
real poolside bop.
“We’ve shared a house at Tamworth the
last few years, which has a pool of course,”
shared Dantier.
“I spent a bit of time in there with a dark
n’ stormy in hand and Andrew managed to
snap a few cheeky photos.”
Swift used the photos to create a mock
single cover for the fictional song, ‘Pool
Party For One’ and posted it on social media
the following April 1.
Yet, it wouldn’t be long before Dantier
made it a reality.
“Friends who were fooled had said in their
defence that it just sounds like something I’d
have written,” explained the singer-songwriter.
“So, I wrote it, for real”.
The song is out now on all the usual
streaming services.
PREVIEW
PREVIEW
The Tiger’s Apprentice Monkey Man
1 hour, 22 minutes 2 hour, 3 minutes
‘The Tiger's Apprentice’ centres on a
normal boy, Tom, who gets drawn into a
world against his wishes when his eccentric
grandmother who he lives with in San
Francisco's Chinatown turns out to be the
guardian of the phoenix egg.
When his grandmother perishes in battle
and is spirited away in a ghost cart, Tom
must apprentice with an unlikely mentor –
a tiger, Mr. Hu – to learn ancient magic and
become the egg's new protector. They team
up with an unlikely band of exotic creatures,
each representing a different sign of
the Chinese zodiac, who can morph into
human form while retaining their innate
animal characteristics.
Oscar nominee Dev Patel achieves an
astonishing, tour-de-force feature directing
debut with an action thriller about
one man’s quest for vengeance against
the corrupt leaders who murdered his
mother and continue to systemically victimise
the poor and powerless.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman,
an icon embodying strength and courage,
‘Monkey Man’ stars Patel as Kid, an
anonymous young man who ekes out a
meagre living in an underground fight
club where, night after night, wearing a
gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more
popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers
a way to infiltrate the enclave of the
city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma
boils over, his mysteriously scarred
hands unleash an explosive campaign
of retribution to settle the score with the
men who took everything from him.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Struggling Eels go down again
NATHAN TAYLOR
Things continue to go from bad to
worse for the Parramatta Eels after
they were thumped 41-8 by the
Canberra Raiders in the nation’s capital on
Sunday night.
The Eels were never in the contest, down
13-0 at half-time before the Raiders laid on
five second half tries to two to send their
opposition crashing to the bottom four.
“We were outplayed,” Eels coach Brad
Arthur said after the match.
The underfire coach wouldn’t confirm if
he’d make any changes heading into this
Saturday’s crucial showdown against the
Cowboys at CommBank Stadium.
“We need 17 players that are going to own
their moments in the game,” he said.
“Making sure they get their basics of
their game right, their fundamentals right,
and making sure that we’re staying in the
contest the whole time.”
