Her work aims to reducemedical errors which account for250,000 deaths a year as the thirdleading cause of death in the healthcaresystem. As a co-director of StanfordInstitute for Human-Centered ArtificialIntelligence (HAI), Li hopes to transformthe physical spaces of healthcare withsensing capabilities by “shin[ing] thelight figuratively” to identify fine-grainedhealthcare activities to measure mobilityand categorize movements in a“contactless” and “continuous way.”Through direct observation with smartsensors installed in a hospital unit, thealgorithm was able to classify patientmovements including “getting in bed,getting out of bed, getting in a chair, andgetting out of a chair” with promisingquantitative results, according to Li. Itwould be beneficial to extend the set ofclinical care activities classifiable. OtherAI models are being developed to “detectany early indication of clinicallyrelevant events that we should bewatching” for daily living spaces forseniors. Li explained these are“emerging new exciting use case[s] andresearch area[s] of AI for helpingpatients and clinicians to illuminate adark space of healthcare.”Li concluded with these inspirationalwords: “Healthcare at the end of theday is humans caring for humans.
