Welcome
We hope you are all having a great summer.
Ours has involved lots of eating and drinking
(as usual). I guess we are making up for lost
time!
This month we have some amazing
competitions. You could win a Brew Experience
for two. This fab prize includes lunch and dinner
and plenty of beer tasting!
If swinging through the forest, Tarzan style,
is your thing, we also have 3 X £100 Go Ape
vouchers up for grabs, but you need to be in it to
win it. Good luck!!!
One of our favourite new food trends is for
lovely sharing platters - there are some great
businesses out there who will also deliver
them. We love this idea, so this month we have
attempted to make our own. Check out the
recipe pages for some inspiration.
Happy reading
Amazing Grazing
Graze boxes, sharing platters, nibbles –
whatever you like to call them, these tasty,
beautiful looking plates of deliciousness are all
the rage at the minute.
There are loads of great local businesses that
can deliver wonderful, ready made boxes
for you to tuck into but if you fancy making
your own, here are some ideas and recipes to
inspire you.
A bit of planning is essential. The size of
your platter will depend on how many you
are feeding. The ingredients will depend
on whether you have veggies, vegans or all
meat eaters. The contents will depend on the
time of year and the event. You could have a
theme like Mediterranean, round-the-world or
traditional ploughmans.
We would recommend a mix of homemade
and shop bought produce – because let’s face
it, life is too short!
Try to keep it as bright as possible – with
contrasting colours next to each other. Think
about textures. You want some crunch as
well as some soft (bread sticks next to a dip).
As for fl avours, if you have spicy food fans
then add some chilli jam, spicy sausage and
Mexican cheese. For those who prefer things
mild, add some traditional chutney and some
mild soft cheese.
Fruit is always a nice touch. Chopped
strawberries, green and red grapes,
blueberries, fi gs and kumquats all look
amazing and go well with savoury.
The recipes opposite are all easy and quick
to make and will add a personal touch to your
platter. Have a go, let your imagination run
wild – and send us a photo!
Ali Wale
For our platter
(pictured left)
we used:
Strawberries, Medjool
dates, Mikado chocolate
sticks, walnuts,
homemade chilli jam,
homemade salsa,
homemade hummus,
carrot and celery sticks,
garlic and herb goats
cheese, stilton, sourdough
crackers, breadsticks
wrapped in Parma ham,
sliced chorizo and salami,
green olives, grapes,
cherry tomatoes and
chorizo sticks.
We served warm feta
soda bread in a basket
on the side.

Quick Salsa
400g tin chopped tomatoes
½ small red onion – finely
chopped
1 clove garlic – grated
Splash of wine vinegar
Juice of ½ lime
½ green chilli – finely chopped
(optional)
2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander
Pinch sugar
Salt & pepper to taste
Method
Using a sieve – drain the tomatoes
from the juice (save this for
another recipe). Use a spoon to
push the juice through the sieve.
In a bowl mix all the ingredients
together. Season to taste and
store in the fridge until needed.
Only add chilli if you want a really
spicy salsa.
Really Easy
Hummus
400g tin chickpeas – drained &
rinsed
2 tbsp tahini paste
4 cloves garlic
Juice of 1 x lemon
1 tsp ground cumin
6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Plenty of salt to taste
Method
Place the chickpeas in a food
processor (you could mash them
if you don’t have one). Add all the
other ingredients and whizz until
well blended. It’s important to keep
tasting and add extra salt and lemon
juice if necessary. Make it to your
taste. If it’s too stiff , add a splash
of water. To serve, sprinkle with
paprika and olive oil.
This recipe is easy to adapt –
sometimes we add chilli powder or
a couple of roasted red peppers
(peeled). You could add some
coriander and more lemon. The
possibilities are endless.
Feta Soda Bread
200g plain flour (+ extra for
dusting)
200g wholemeal flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp sea salt
1 bunch chives – snipped into
small pieces
100g feta – crumbled
200g natural yogurt
100ml milk
2 tsp herbs (thyme or za’atar
work well)
Method
Heat oven to 200°C. We used a cast
iron 24cm lidded casserole dish. You
could use a baking sheet.
Place the fl ours in a bowl along with
the bicarb of soda, salt, chives and
cheese. Mix the yogurt and milk
together in a jug and add to the dry
mix, bringing it all together. You may
need to add a bit more milk. You are
looking for an elastic dough, not too
sticky. Place on a fl oured surface
and shape it into a round. Dust the
base of the casserole/baking sheet
with fl our.
Place the dough in the casserole/
on the baking sheet. Deeply score
the top into 4 x quarters. Brush with
milk. Place lid on (if using) and bake
for 30 mins. Then take lid off and
bake for another 10. The top should
be nicely browned and the bottom
should sound hollow when tapped.
On a baking tray it should take about
40 mins. Serve hot with butter.

Children at Hillside Primary and Nursery School
in Hucknall have been raising money for a
defibrillator to be located on the school gates
following their work on a ‘Healthy Hearts’ topic.
Their ‘Healthy Hearts’ topic looked at the form and
function of hearts and how to keep them healthy
and as part of their work, children also held a virtual
meeting with a gentleman who suffers from a heart
condition to learn more.
Charged with the planning and fundraising were
Hillside Primary and Nursery School’s Year 6 children,
who organised a series of events to raise the £1000
necessary for the lifesaving kit.
Now the school says its running total for the
fundraising has doubled the original target and is
currently at £2300 allowing children to fund a second
defibrillator to serve the Hucknall community. On
hearing about children’s efforts, Nottinghamshire
Fire and Rescue Service donated a defibrillator case
to the school.
Pupil Lewis Boothby (Yr6) said, “We have planned a
few events including a whole school fun day where
you pay £1 to wear the clothes you want, and also an
obstacle course for everyone to have a go at.”
Hillside Primary & Nursery School have set up
a Just Giving page at: https://justgiving.com/
contribute to the effort.
Literacy Volunteers
Registered Charity No. 1167357 Literacy Volunteers
www.literacyvolunteers.org.uk
Volunteers are needed to help primary school
children with their reading and communication
skills.
Volunteers read and play word games with selected
children on a one-to-one basis away from the
classroom, to give them confidence and help them
enjoy reading and communicating. Volunteers need
to be able to commit to visiting a local school on
the same morning or afternoon each week (for at
least a year) and their own transport would be an
advantage but is not essential. They do not need any
formal qualifications – training and ongoing support
is provided. Volunteers should like children, enjoy
reading, be patient, flexible and reliable. Volunteers
will be vetted through the Disclosure and Barring
Service.
Football almost came home
the eve of the European Championship football
final. We were all quite excited to put it mildly but
it turned out not to be the win we all dreamed of
despite Luke Shaw’s brilliant goal in the opening
minutes. But, all told, it was a great experience and
to a final. And up to that point, for me, that was the
greatest tournament performance I had seen.
Power forward to today and my kids now think that
this level of football is expected from an England fan.
tournament performances over the years. They
Watching England play in a major tournament final
was quite a big deal in our house. Personally I was
delighted to see England get this far in a tournament.
Over the last few decades it’s been a bit hit and miss.
I told my kids this but I don’t think they really believed
me. I told them they have been spoilt for football with
England in the last few years as they have now got to
a semi-final in the World Cup and now a final in the
European Championships.
moments of World Cup glory (I’m looking at you Italia
tournaments. I think the first European Championship
I remember watching was in 1988 when the
Netherlands won it and Marco Van Basten scored
what can only be described as a bit of a belter against
Russia in the final. England’s own Captain Marvel
shoulder injury, which seemed to rule him out of
‘90’s. My best friend and I were so enamoured by the
Netherlands that we spent many school lunch breaks
bullet header past the despairing Renat Dasyaev. And
because we were complete football nerds we decided
your dad).
I can categorically say that there was a tournament
that made an indelible impression on me and
probably every other England fan of that era. It was
my last summer before University, Brit Pop was just
around the corner, and we had a football team that
scored that incredible goal against Scotland, we
thumped the Netherlands and got desperately close
it happened. And they love it. My son is obsessed
with football, while my daughter can take it or leave
it. But she watched all the recent England games and
a fair few more besides. She drew Austria in a class
sweepstake and was genuinely interested in their
lack of progress.
One of the benefits to watching these sorts of
tournaments is seeing how the kids take it all in.
Whilst my son is a walking rolodex of stats and
work out how to pronounce the names of North
Macedonian midfield. And we don’t replay the games
with Subbuteo (seriously, it was massive back in the
day), we recreate tournaments on the FIFA video
game instead. And it’s a bit weird when you think
about the whole concept: I’m not remotely interested
born here, or even at all so to get obsessed by a flag
or an indeterminate patch of ground is frankly absurd.
But I do take pride in the performance of our sports
teams, and I understand how that may come across
So we sat down to watch the final as a family, our
fingers were well and truly crossed. The start was
worse when you experience it through your children.
When Rashford and Sancho came on I fatefully joked
to my son that one of them would probably miss a
penalty as Man United always seem to offer up some
form of scapegoated player in a major tournament.
they won’t forget in a hurry.
And we’re already looking
forward to next years World
say the least!
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me
eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood
and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!
MONKEYING
AROUND AT GO APE
Go Ape in Nottingham is based at
Sherwood Pines and they offer 4
different tree top activities based
on your age and ability. The Treetop
Challenge (£34) aimed at adults
and the more adventurous children
(10+) over 1.4m. The Treetop Adventure
Plus (£24) an extension of
the Treetop Adventure for older kids
over 1m. The Treetop Adventure
(£19) that is suitable for challenging
grown up kids over 1.2m and
The Nets Adventure (£19) which is
tree houses, netted walkways and
bouncy nets full of inflatable balls,
all high above the forest floor.
Go Ape is open for tree swinging
adventures every day of the week
throughout the year and we chose
to visit them on a Tuesday for their
last session of the day which is 3pm.
I took the whole family along for
a tree climbing, swinging and zip
trekking Treetop Challenge, including
grandad, teenagers and Harry
aged 10, all of whom should feel at
home swinging through the trees.
Our session started with a safety
briefing, being strapped into a harness
and then practicing using the
safety equipment, clipping onto the
safety lines and swapping from one
obstacle to another.
WIN 1 of 3 x £100
GO APE VOUCHERS
Win Win Win
Win a brew experience day for 2 guests
valued at £170 including breakfast, lunch, a full
experience day and tasters of all the beers on site.
DEADLINE
30TH NOVEMBER
2021
Just answer the following question:
How many days of the week
are Go Ape open?
After this we were set free to traverse
the course by ourselves. We
climbed a ladder up into the tree
tops and then decided which out of
two routes to take. The trails involve
crawling through barrel type tunnels,
edging along tightrope wires,
stepping across wooden slats, zip
wires to the ground and much,
much more. My favourite and scariest
moment was swinging across
into a cargo net after dropping a
few feet first. The whole experience
was great for someone like me who
was determined to fight my fear of
heights and have a fun day out with
the family.
The whole adventure from start
to finish lasted about 3 hours and
was a fantastic day out with lots of
laughs and monkeying around.
Did you know that the Go Ape idea
was dreamed up by Tris and Becs
back in 2001 when they were on
holiday in France and came across
a family swinging through the trees.
They saw how much fun they were
all having and came up with the
idea of Go Ape. Thanks Tris and
Becs we loved our adventure.
now freedom day
has come and gone...
by Helen Jones
As I write, we are a few weeks past Freedom Day and
the easing of many restrictions which have dominated
life over the past eighteen months or so.
Employers are now able to dictate that staff should
return to their places of work as WFH is no longer
the requirement. However, research has shown that
almost 75% of workers would like the flexibility of
remote working to continue in some format. Many are
anxious about the return to work and if employers aren’t
sensitive to this shift then it could adversely affect staff
engagement, wellbeing, recruitment and retention.
Worryingly nearly a quarter of SME owners responding
to a survey revealed that they would not be consulting
with their employees on their return to the workplace
policies.
I have advocated in my articles many times for better
mental health support for staff. Coronaphobia* has
taken many different forms during the pandemic
therefore any steps to relieve anxiety in people returning
to work must be a big consideration. Even smaller
companies with limited resources can access free
guidance online with helping employees cope with
changes. MIND the mental health charity has a number
of free Wellness Action Plans.
As life becomes busier again it’s imperative that
communication is maintained in order to make the
transition back to normality easier. Speak to your line
manager about your fears and concerns and if you are
a business owner LISTEN. When the pressure is on to
increase revenue after the pandemic has eased it would
be business suicide not to listen to the workers who are
needed to reach those targets.
*Coronaphobia has been defined as “an excessive
triggered response of fear of contracting the virus
causing COVID-19, leading to accompanied excessive
concern over physiological symptoms, significant
stress about personal and occupational loss, increased
reassurance and safety seeking behaviours, and
avoidance of public places and situations, causing
marked impairment in daily life functioning.”
Nottinghamshire Police leading the way as crime
plummets
The overall fall in crime recorded in
Nottinghamshire was way ahead of
the national average and only bettered
only by the City of London Police –
which covers just a square mile of the
capital.
New national statistics, recently
released, show robberies, burglaries,
knife crime and other serious offences
all plummeted, marking a sustained
drop which started well before the
impact of the pandemic.
abundance of community intelligence.
Many drugs operations were carried
out by the force’s 12 different Operation
Reacher teams in addition to the force
Serious and Organised Crime Taskforce.
Chief Constable Craig Guildford said:
“Today’s figures confirm the continuation
of some extremely positive trends
witnessed before the start of the
pandemic. I am delighted not only that
we are out-performing almost every other
force in the country, but also that some
of the biggest falls have been reported in
areas where we have taken the decision
to invest in specialist teams of front-line
officers and detectives.
Continued investment in specialist
policing teams and more officers helped
the force to record an overall annual fall
in crime of 21% – comfortably ahead of
the national average of 14%.
The new figures, released by the Office
for National Statistics, show 22,239
fewer offences were recorded in the 12
months to April 2021.
Burglaries fell by 34%, robberies by 36%
and theft offences by 33% and serious
sexual offences saw a significant
reduction too.
Offences of violence with injury fell by
25% and knife crime by 15%, as officers
continued with a raft of proactive
initiatives in pursuing those who cause
communities most harm and preventing
offences.
The force’s own figures for the same
period showed trafficking in controlled
drugs saw an 11% increase, a credible
and much welcomed result based upon
sustained targeting of dealers and an
“Our two knife crime teams are now out
and about every day in locations across
the county and our network of Operation
Reacher teams have been causing drug
dealers and other criminals sleepless
nights with a relentless series of early
morning raids. They have now notched
up more than 500 different raids and will
continue to add to this number in the
coming weeks and months.
“Our designated robbery teams,
meanwhile, have also overseen an
increase in detection rates of more
than ten percent – meaning that
more criminals are being arrested and
charged.”
“Again, I am delighted by these excellent
results and would like to extend my
thanks to every officer and staff member
who made them possible. In uniquely
difficult and demanding circumstances
they have risen to the challenge and
allowed us to better support victims
of crime, bring offenders to justice
and build ever stronger links with the
communities we serve. I am sure
residents will also be reassured to know
that during the same period we recruited
an additional 202 new police officers to
help us continue with our vital work in
reducing the number of victims.”

there is still time to enter
memory walk in september
by Alzheimer’s Society
Nottingham residents are being invited to don their
walking gear, lace up their boots, and unite against
dementia by signing up to Alzheimer’s Society’s
Memory Walk taking place this Autumn.
Hundreds of Alzheimer’s Society supporters will
put their best foot forward at Wollaton Park on
19th September 2021 alongside family, friends and
Over a year since the pandemic began, people with
increasing. Memory Walk will bring together people
who have been personally affected by dementia,
those who want to walk to remember a loved one, and
people looking for a fun-filled activity to raise money
for charity at 20 locations across England, Wales and
Northern Ireland.
Supporters can also opt to walk on their own, or
with loved ones, on the paths, pavements, parks or
pebbles in a location of their choosing throughout
September.
By marching out in support of Alzheimer’s Society,
walkers will raise crucial funds to help the charity
reach more people through its vital services, like the
Dementia Connect support line, which have been
used more than five million times since March 2020.
The deadline for signing up is 15 September. You can
Three little words…
We know physical movement,
let’s call this exercise, of any kind, is
beneficial for our health. Correct? If
you agree just give me a little head
nod to yourself.
We also know that eating ‘healthy’ is beneficial
for our body… Correct? We aren’t going to
get into a debate around good nutrition in this
article. It’s a minefield and frankly… we know
we should eat well.
So, if we’re not talking about exercise or
nutrition… what else matters or affects
our health?
1. Rest… actually recovering from the stresses
of exercise, nutrition/ dieting change as well
as dealing with the day-to-day life stress
we manage. Efficient recovery is almost
ALWAYS underrated. It’s actually something
we monitor very closely with our clients and
members. So next time you’re feeling a little
burnt out, ask yourself when did I last rest
fully and allow my body to rebuild?
2. Sleep… not the 4 hours we might brag about
(I’m hardcore, I only need 4 hours sleep we
might say) nor the 9 hours you HAVE to have
because you can’t operate on anything less.
We need 6-8 hours sleep to allow the body
to recover. For those of us who struggle to
get a night of unbroken sleep there are loads
of useful techniques to help. There are apps
for the phone, sprays for your pillow even
eye-masks.
3. Forgive… yourself. So many of us fail to
change our lives because that one slice
of cake has messed everything up. IT HAS
NOT!!! It’s called normal human behaviour
and we didn’t mess anything up. The effort
it takes to begin a change of lifestyle is huge
and punishing ourselves for one minor slip
isn’t fair and truth be told, it’s exhausting
starting over constantly.
The summary I’d like to leave you with is
to think a little further than just exercise
and dieting.
Let’s think about our whole selves and our
wellbeing. And I can’t stress this enough,
eating a chocolate bar isn’t the end of the
world, it happens!
Picking back up right away, regardless of
what’s happened, is what is going to see your
life change for the better. Don’t sweat the
small stuff.
Top Tips For ZZZZZ’s
• Black out blinds or curtains
• 1h before bed no social media (you aren’t
missing anything)
• Prepare for tomorrow, list of to do’s and
clothes ready
• No caffeine 6 hours before bed
• Nothing can be changed while falling asleep
so stop over thinking in bed
A few things that improve sleep
Kiwi
Zinc and magnesium
Ashwaganda
Remember Coach Andy says…
• Rest and recover when you hear the signals
your mind and body give you.
• Get 6-8 hours of sleep every night.
• Be kind to yourself ... you deserve it!
NG STYLE
The Thirty Pound Challenge
Welcome to our new fashion page, NG Style. Each
month we will be sharing our fashion tips and
trends with you. Starting with our outfit challenge!
We all love a bargain. It’s a great feeling, knowing
you’ve had a good deal. Buying second hand or
re-cycled clothes is not only better for the planet,
it’s better for your purse and you can quite often
end up with something a bit more unique.
Our resident bargain hunter is Sarah. If there’s
a deal to be had, Sarah knows about it. So, we
decided to set her the challenge of dressing one
of us (Cat), head to toe, for the princely sum of
£30. As a mum of four, Cat has neither the time or
inclination to go clothes shopping, so we decided
to surprise her.
After an initial consultation – what size are you?
Do you want an outfit for work or going out? Do
you like fitted or loose clothes? What size feet are
you? What brands do you wear most often? Sarah
was ON IT.
Charity shops are great for picking up a bargain
(while also supporting a good cause). We have
spent many an afternoon trawling through the local
high street shops looking for that hidden gem.
Some, like Oxfam, have now also gone online –
https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk
Nottingham based White Rose sell recycled
fashion and all their profits go to support the Aegis
Trust, a charity that works towards the prediction,
prevention and elimination of genocide. White
Rose now have seven shops in Nottingham and are
going from strength to strength. They also have a
great website: www.whiterosefashion.com where
you can pick up some amazing bargains.
£4.00
£4.79
All prices include
delivery and buyer
protection fee’s where
appropriate.
We spent the grand
total of £31.50 (what’s
£1.50 between
friends!) but I think
you’ll agree that
Sarah did a cracking
job. Two dresses
(one from Monsoon),
Converse trainers
and a bag! And they
all look gorgeous on
our Cat.
£12.67
There are lots of
online options for
buying clothes.
Our favourite is
Vinted. The app
is so easy to use.
Sarah bagged
these bargains
from Vinted and
White Rose.
£10.04
So why not give it a try? Next time you’re in the
market for an outfit, have a look in your local
charity shops and browse apps like Vinted, Depop,
ebay or Facebook. Let us know how you get on.
HOMES URGENTLY NEEDED FOR TRAINEE GUIDE DOGS
by The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association
Sight loss charity
Guide Dogs urgently
needs volunteers in
Nottingham to care
for trainee guide dogs,
whilst they prepare to
become life-changing
guides. The charity’s
volunteer Fosterers
provide temporary
homes for dogs, as they
complete the latter
stages of their guide dog training.
Guide Dogs covers the cost of all the food, veterinary
care and equipment required for each dog and provides
volunteer Fosterers with full training and support.
The organisation is in urgent need of at least 25 new
homes in the Nottingham area for its future guide dogs.
As part of the role, Fosterers would be required to
drop dogs at the Nottingham Guide Dogs centre in
Phoenix Business Park, just outside Bulwell, on weekday
mornings and collect them again in the evening.
A guide dog begins its formal training at around 12-14
months old and, in normal circumstances, most dogs
qualify as working guide dogs by the age of two.
Volunteer Fosterers usually care for dogs that are
between 14-24 months of age.
The two main breeds the charity uses are Labradors and
Golden Retrievers, which are crossed to gain the best
characteristics of each breed.
If you think you could provide a loving, temporary
home for a trainee guide dog in Nottingham, contact
Volunteering Coordinator Melanie Brown via: melanie.
brown@guidedogs.org.uk or call 0800 781 1444.
POST-LOCKDOWN LIFE FOR DOGS
by Scarsdale Vets
It’s great news for us all that COVID-19 restrictions
are beginning to ease. However, this may not
be the case for some dogs, especially if you’ve
acquired a furry friend during the beginning of
lockdown.
All these dogs have known is a limited number of
people who have been able to have close contact
with them. Their walks have been quiet, with limited
noise, people and traffic. They haven’t experienced
new places, different areas and new smells. What
will life be like for your dog post-lockdown?
Here are several tips to help your companion adjust:
New situations
Too many challenges will overwhelm them and can
cause nervous behaviour which could develop into
a fear phobia. It’s therefore a good idea to gradually
introduce your dog to new situations.
To prevent a fear phobia occurring, slowly build up
new experiences by providing lots of praise and
rewards. Linking new exposures to positive training
methods will enhance your dog’s ability to cope.
For example, instead of inviting friends into your
house where your dog is not used to having
strangers, you could arrange to meet up with friends
and go for a dog walk which exposes your dog to
new people paired with fun distractions.
Out and about
Take a trip to an outdoor shopping centre where you
and your dog can sit and watch the world go by. Take
treats with you to reward calm behaviours in a busy
environment. Staying too long may overwhelm your
dog so it’s a good idea to keep visits short but often,
until they get used to different environments.
Slow and steady changes
Have you been working from home during the
pandemic? Slow changes to your routine will help
your dog adjust to their new way of life. Dogs often
find it difficult to be left on their own as they’re very
sociable, hence why they make great additions to
the family. It’s a good idea to prepare them to cope
without you at home. Start by leaving your dogs
when they are sleeping, eating or playing – try
closing the door behind you and sitting in another
room.
Keeping your dog company
If you haven’t had time to get your dog used to being
left alone, or you’ve recognised that your dog is not
coping well, don’t ignore the situation. Act quickly to
prevent it from getting any worse. While you go out,
ask family or friends to sit with your dog or arrange
for a dog walker to walk your dog when you go back
to work. This will limit the time your dog is left on
their own. If you are going to be away for a long
period of time possibly look into a doggy day-care
facility.
Training
Training classes can help you to deal with the
adolescent teenage years of your dogs’ life. It is
part of their normal development however, it can
sometimes be a difficult time for dog owners as their
beloved friend seems to have forgotten lots of what
they were taught. A little help from a dog trainer can
really help get your dog get back on track.
At Scarsdale Vets, we offer a 4-week puppy training
course. It’s designed to help with a range of puppy
challenges such as toilet training, socialisation,
play biting and chewing plus much more. For
further information or to book, please call our Pride
Veterinary Centre on 01332 678333.
Dogs smell – fact. They smell worse when they
are wet and they smell significantly worse if they
decide to roll in something, as I know only too well.
Previously, I have mentioned that Gary and I have
an odourometer – basically if we can get halfway
home from a walk without gagging then Herbie has
escaped the dreaded bath.
The
Smelly
Tail
On a recent trip to Northumberland, we were
walking along a deserted, wind-swept beach when
the little scamp disappeared into the dunes. After a
10 minute search, we found him in his high delights,
rolling over a rotting seal carcass. After a struggle,
Gary eventually managed to get a lead on him
and literally drag him off the disgusting thing. He
then proceeded to head dive into the sand and roll
around in ecstacy for another 5 minutes (Herbie,
not Gary).
Heading back to the rented cottage, it slowly
dawned on us that the putrid smell of death
following us was in fact Herbie. Luckily, the cottage
was within walking distance, but with no dog
shampoo and an upstairs bathroom we had to
innovate. After finding some kids shampoo and a
mop bucket we kept washing him in the garden until
he smelt more like watermelon than warthog.
Worse for us, this time we had driven. There was no
way he was getting in the car smelling like a corpse.
After pondering all the options (leave him on
the beach, take him home stinking, wash him in
the sea), we proceeded to one end of the beach
where Gary stripped down to his undercrackers
and dragged the little sod into the sea where he
attempted to wash him with a seaweed flannel.
I helpfully recorded the whole sorry incident for
social media whilst almost wetting myself. It was
only as Gary emerged from the waves like 007
(more like 005½) that we realised an elderly couple
had perched on a bench at the back of the beach
and were chuckling away whilst tucking into their
pack-up. Who needs the cinema?
Day three was thankfully incident free, however
our final day held more olfactory delights. Beach
number three. Dead seal number three (how
can that be??) This one was buried in the sand,
disguised as a rock. It was only when the rolling
started that we realised what it was. Too late.
Again. The damage was done. And this was just
before we set off home so we had no access to the
cottage and it was way too cold for another strip
bath with Gary.
Day two. Another beach. Another dead seal. Before
we knew what was going on, Herbie was rolling all
over the rotting pile of blubber. This one still had all
it’s teeth! Gross.
There was no option but to pile him in the back of
the car and for us to spend the next few hours with
the windows down, wondering whether the rescue
centre had a returns policy!
We were reliably informed by a local, it had been
on the beach for 14 months after being towed by a
tractor back out to sea a number of times. Errr, try
burying it then, instead of leaving it to rot.
Do you like to make an
entrance? Are you an
attention seeker? Then
you simply must drive the
Honda Civic Type-R.
No sooner has the bright red
Civic arrived on the drive every
passer-by stops to admire its
cool design. “Look at those
exhausts,” says my son Henry
(5). It looks like a rocket. The
rear is certainly striking thanks
to the massive spoiler and then
there are the subtle red brake
callipers. Stroll round to the
front and there are air vents
by the side of the front doors;
they’re on the bonnet too, further
adding to its racing credentials.
I wouldn’t like this behind me,
that’s for sure. This is a Civic
with a difference. A package to
please any boy racer.
A 169mph sports car for just
over £30,000. A very easy way
to lose that precious driving
licence. So much respect is
required. It reminds me of a
considerably more expensive
Maserati, which when the engine
is started, the ground beneath
literally vibrates.
Honda Civic Type-R
Tim Saunders is an advanced
motorist and journalist. He
has always been passionate
about motoring and regularly
reviews cars from the leading
manufacturers. His Youtube channel
videos have been watched more than
275,000 times. Tim aims to boost his
subscribers from 300 to over 1,000.
Although this doesn’t happen
in the Honda the engine does
vibrate the driver’s feet in the
footwell.
There’s a three-mode driving
system operated by a switch
in the centre next to the front
passenger seat that allows the
driver, or passenger for that
matter, to choose between
Comfort, Sport or +R setting.
Basically Comfort is for everyday
driving, a more relaxed setting,
Sport gives a little enhancement
while +R unleashes everything
it has to offer, ideal for a track
day. The latter is sort of Maserati
mode; a louder noise from that
exhaust, tighter suspension. In
fact driving in +R mode reminds
me of the time I went on a
Honda powerboat; the same type
of g-force is thrust upon the
occupants. Defi nitely one for the
adrenalin junkies among you.
I do like the red and black suede
steering wheel; very comfy to
hold and the slightly squashed
circle shape of the wheel is
appealing. The power steering is
quite hard and race car like as
you might expect, compared to
other cars.
Watch the video review at www.testdrives.biz
His fi rst report on a BMW 520i was
published in the Dorset Echo when he
was 17 (just after passing his driving test)
in 1995. He went on to become business
and motoring editor at the Bournemouth
Echo. Now, his engaging and informative
reviews are published in newspapers and
magazines in the UK and abroad.
Visit his website: www.testdrives.biz
“The doors are tough to shut,
though,” says Caroline, who is
known to stretch out her left
arm behind her, when seated in
the front passenger seat, to shut
the rear passenger door for the
children. But not in the Honda.
“It’s a bit plasticky,” criticizes Lin,
Caroline’s mum when we meet
for a socially distanced walk.
The driver’s seat hugs its
occupant and the red and black
suede is good quality. The
red suede covered steering
wheel continues the luxurious
sporty feel. There’s a six-speed
manual gearbox and an electric
handbrake. It’s an absolute joy
to drive. The post girl is just
delivering some letters to us as
I start the engine and it lets out
a hearty roar. She takes a step
back in surprise and can’t resist
a double take. Oh what fun. This
is the start of what is to become
a succession of admiring glances
throughout our travels.
Late bloomers
Autumn is the time some
of us cut back and tidy up
our gardens ready for the
winter. But the autumn
garden can be full of
colour as some plants
are just beginning their
show. Here’s some of my
favourite late bloomers.
Chrysanthemums are well
known house plants but there
are lots of lessor known types
that thrive in the garden and
are safe to leave out over
winter.
is totally perennial and hardy
in well-drained soils. It gets
tall (4-5ft / 120-150cm) but
doesn’t need staking. There
are two varieties to look out
for – the unnamed pale lemon
one and “Hanneys Lemon
Drop” that is sunshine yellow
with pale yellow tips to the
petals. These are spreading
plants so give them some
room and dig them up in
spring annually to keep them
in check. The flowers are very
fragrant and loved by bees
and butterflies.
Helianthus, perennial
sunflowers, are some of the
best late bloomers adding a
splash of sunshine colour and
perhaps more surprisingly
a whiff of chocolate scent
to the autumn garden. The
variety “Bitter Chocolate”
is just starting to flower at
the end of September, and
they exude the unmistakable
scent of drinking chocolate
on a warm, sunny day. For
more flower power, but alas
no scent, try the well-loved
“Lemon Queen”, the large
flowered “Happy Days” or the
“Dixter Orange” is a short,
bushy plant that is absolutely
smothered with bright orange
double flowers from mid-
August and into October it still
puts on a brilliant show. “Clara
Curtis” is more subdued, with
pale pink single flowers.
Hardy Chrysanthemums
can be left in the ground all
year but should be lifted and
divided in spring every two
years. Give them a sunny spot
in well-drained soil and they’ll
give you a wonderful autumn
display every year.
Another flower just coming
into its own is Bidens aurea.
Not at all like the tender
Bidens we use in hanging
baskets this is more like the
annual flowered Cosmos but
Japanese Anemones have
also been looking good in late
summer and will continue
to flower into the autumn.
Mostly their flowers come in
various shades of pink or pure
white, each with a bold yellow
knob at the centre. We grow
“Honorine Jobert” (white) and
“September Charm” (pink).
They can take quite a while to
get established in the garden,
sometimes a few years, but
once they get their roots
down there’s no stopping
them! In fact, make sure you
are certain of the position
when you plant them as the
deep roots of an established
plant will keep on coming
through for a long time after a
plant has been moved.
new variety “Helios”. All are
putting on an amazing show
and attracting an appreciative
audience of bees and
butterflies.
These are just a few of the
late bloomers on display in
our garden through autumn
so I don’t rush to put the
garden to bed for the winter
too soon.
Martin Blow
Janet & I organise Plant
Hunters’ Fairs, specialist
A Special Wedding Day by Maureen Newton
Local people had been looking forward to Tuesday the
4th of December 1906 with a lot of pleasure. It was
the day of the marriage of Miss Emily Ada Jackson of
Broomhill House, Hucknall Torkard to Mr. Edwin Henry
Story of Birtles Old Hall, Chalford, Cheshire.
Members of the community had been active for
ages working out plans for decorations to be seen
as the carriages passed along the route from
Broomhill House to St. Mary’s, the Parish Church.
The bridegroom arrived at ten minutes to two with his
best man Sir Francis Burdett. The two bridesmaids
arrived at the same time waiting in the portal of the
church for the bride. As they alighted from the carriage
the bride with Captain Housman, who gave her away,
passed under another amazing arch with the legend
‘Long life and happiness’. An awning was fixed from
the gates to the church porch by the Nottingham
Catering Company, (a similar one was at Broomhill
House) with decorations inside the church arranged by
Mr. Swinton, florist, of West Street.
Flags and bunting were everywhere. Starting in the
neighbourhood of Broomhill House then moving on
to Portland Road where Mr. George Elkington had
erected a double arch. On one side it said ‘Long live
the happy pair’ and on the other ‘Happiness to the
bride and bridegroom’. Other garlands stretched
along the way: one of them read ‘You will be missed
when you have gone’, another ‘Give honour to whom
honour is due’. On High Street there were decorations
on an extensive scale by tenants under the direction
of Messrs H. Brown, P. Howis and H. Mettam and a
considerable number of evergreens had been given by
Lady Chermside. Flags protruded from the buildings
and scaffolding of the new shops being erected for
the Misses Jackson and one streamer reached over
the road to Mrs Cartledges house with the words
‘Welcome’ on one side and ‘Health and happiness’ on
the other. Other streamers bore messages such as
‘Health, long life and happiness’ and ‘Good Luck’.
The arrival of the guests was watched with interest by
crowds of townsfolk despite the rain. Mr. Frank Slater,
a rising organist in the county, played the Wedding
March from ‘Lohengrin’ and ‘Benedictine Nuptiale’
(Hollins) as the congregation assembled. Mr. W.
Jacklin directed the choir and the full choral service
was ably rendered.
Meanwhile the clergy took their positions and soon
a general ripple signalled the approach of the bride
and the vast congregation rose. The Rev. E Roberts,
vicar and the Rev. J. Read, vicar of Ollerton were
the officiating clergymen. The vows were made with
clear voices and after the ceremony was completed
the newly married pair went into the vestry to sign
the register. Several people signed the certificate as
witnesses: W. F. Story; M. Cecilia Jackson; Francis
Burdett; Mary S. Story; V. Knightly and H. M. Housman?
(This one very difficult to read). As the couple walked
back to their carriage they were saluted by the Boys’
Brigade while the church bells pealed a blessing.
The wedding dress was in Empire style of white satin
with an overdress of net sewn with silver sequins and
bands of satin and lace inserted at the foot; with this
was worn a veil of old Brussels lace over a wreath
of myrtle. Her jewellery was of diamonds and her
bouquet was of white flowers. Bridesmaids, Miss
Holden of Nuthall and Miss Salmond of Langton Hall,
wore dresses of old rose crepon with bodices and
sleeves of Valenciennes lace, carrying bouquets of
pink carnations.
A reception was held at Broomhill House for their
guests and afterwards Mr. and Mrs. Story left for
London. Grey was the colour chosen for the going
away outfit. A dress with trimmings of embroidery and
lace combined with a matching hat of grey beaver and
long blue ostrich feathers. A coat with sable collar and
sable muff completed the ensemble.
TAROSCOPES
Air signs- Libra, Aquarius,
Gemini
(Judgment, Two of Cups, Two of Coins)
A review and reassessment of your relationship
landscape is on the agenda this week. The twos
of cups and coins shows your closest bonds
deepening and widening- you are welcoming
new people into your world. Judgment shows
that this marks a signifi cant turning point,
a renewal of your whole relationship
~landscape~. Be open to new relationships.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries,
Sagittarius
(Seven of Coins, Two of Wands,
Ten of Cups)
You’re unsure what to do about a longstanding
relationship in your life as shown by the loving
ten of cups and the ~cross roads~ seven of
coins. Things have changed, but should you say
something or just let it work itself out? The two of
wands acknowledges you’re unsure so have let
things ~drift~, but you need to make a choice
now. Have a heart to heart this week, and trust
that your connection is deep enough to weather
a little static.
Earth signs- Capricorn,
Virgo, Taurus
(Queen of Swords, the Magician,
Nine of Swords)
Queen of swords, the magician, nine of swords
Powerful energy is behind you this week with the
creative magician and the solo-entrepreneurial
queen of swords. Both cards are great omens
for new jobs, projects, creative endeavours, side
lines and ventures. The nine of swords shows that
your doubts and fears have held you back from
this hitherto, and the fi rst step towards action is
to vent these anxieties. There’s
nothing stopping you.
Water signs- Cancer,
Pisces, Scorpio
(Eight of Cups, King of Cups, Nine of
Wands)
An emotional disappointment comes into
focus this week, it’s something that has already
happened (so don’t worry) but you haven’t
really faced into it fully yet. It’s time to do so.
Accept it, absorb it, and then leave it in the
past. The eight and king of cups shows that you
can overcome this setback, and take control.
Better yet, the nine of wands shows that this
disappointment will soon (in two months) prove
to have a big silver lining.
a good read - book reviews
by Willow Coby
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
We all experience both
good and bad in our
lives. Some people
seem pretty content
with their lot in spite
of adversity, and
some are dissatisfied
even when others
feel they’ve been
dealt a good hand.
At some point all of
us have wondered,
what if? What
if things were
different?
Nora certainly does. She’s in her 20s yet feels
trapped. As a teenager she was destined to
become an Olympic swimmer, but gave it up, went
to university to study philosophy, and ended up
working in a local music shop, living alone with
her cat. Nora’s life seems to be going from bad
to worse, so she decides to not go on living at all,
and one night, just before midnight, she takes an
overdose and writes a goodbye note.
Suddenly she finds herself in a library; an infinite
library where the time is always 00:00 – the
Midnight Library. There she meets Mrs Elm, her
old school librarian, who explains that this is where
she can decide whether or not to live. But she
doesn’t have to live her current life; she can live ANY
possible life that she could ever have had. Every
regret that she ever had has led to another version
of her living that life in another possible existence.
She now has the chance to decide if she would like
to live one of those lives.
The Midnight Library draws on classical
philosophical ideas, and this thought-provoking
novel will lead you to question what happiness is
really all about. Will Nora decide to live and if so,
which life will she choose?
The Squirrels who
Squabbled by Jim Field
This picture book was
loaned to me by the fouryear-old
son of a friend,
who said it was his favourite
book and I should review it –
and I can see why.
It is autumn and all through the forest creatures are
busy storing up the food they need for the winter.
All that is except one squirrel: Spontaneous Cyril.
As usual, he doesn’t bother with that. He imagines
he can grab some food at the last minute. Then the
last minute arrives and he spies a fat pinecone, full
of lovely nuts. It is just what he needs, and he sets
off to acquire it. But he isn’t the only one eyeing it
up. Plan-Ahead Bruce has also seen it. His store is
getting on nicely and this is the perfect pinecone to
finish it off. Who will get to it first?
With wonderful illustrations and text to match it,
this book teaches the value of teamwork to young
readers.
The Queen’s Knickers –
Nicholas Allan
Ever wondered why
the Queen’s Christmas
Speech is so short? It’s
the holly on her knickers.
But they are not her most
impressive pair – well, not
compared to the special parachute-equipped pants
that she wears for transatlantic flights, or the ones
that inflate into a rubber dinghy...
Confused? Don’t worry, Nicholas Allan explains it all in
this gloriously mad and ever-so-slightly-rude fantasy
tale about the Queen’s underwear choices. The text
may be deadpan, but the illustrations show just how
much fun the writer is having dreaming up all kinds of
different knicker varieties. The Queen’s Knickers has
become a modern classic. Go on, take a peek!
