ONE BARREL
B R E W I N G
Building Strong Roots
Written By: Emily Beier
Photography By: Brandi Krause
Jennifer said there's a lot to love
about Door County and they knew
it would be the perfect spot for
their family to settle in and
embrace the culture and immerse
themselves into the community and
that includes volunteering.
Door County is a real treasure in Wisconsin.
Each season is perfectly highlighted from
fresh greenery and delicious cherries in the
spring and summer to the warm hues of fall
and the coziness of fresh snow in the winter.
One thing Door County isn't lacking is
beauty and for one local business owner she
says she sees it in the people everyday.
Peter and Jennifer Gentry are a husband and
wife entrepreneur duo that got their start
after a gift sparked what would turn into a
beautiful opportunity.
"Peter had gotten his father a home brewing
kit for Father's Day one year. It was
something they could do together and he
just found that he really enjoyed it and he
was good at it," said Jennifer. "He started
entering his home brews in competitions
and he was winning and so he decided to
take the leap and do something that he is so
passionate about."
In 2012, they opened the doors of One Barrel
Brewing in Madison, one of the first nano
breweries in the area. They brewed one
barrel at a time, hence their name. They
have since grown and are now the 13th
largest craft brewery in the state of
Wisconsin. Jennifer adds that they still brew
a lot of one barrel batches in both locations.
Jennifer said it was a lot of hard work and
teamwork from family. Her father-in-law
even helped build the bar. That big leap of
faith would pay off and would open another
door for Jennifer to leave a successful career
in healthcare if she wanted.
"About five years ago we started talking
about the next project. We were getting
ready to start another round of IVF and we
were pretty serious about starting a family. I
worked for a consulting company and I had
at the time about 250 employees that
reported to me from all over the country. I
was traveling every week and I was burnt
out and I knew I couldn't be a mom and do
this too," said Jennifer.
Jennifer's family is originally from the Green
Bay area and has fond memories of visiting
Door County in the summer.
"My grandparents had a place up in Door
County and I knew I loved it up here. It
would be a great change of pace for us and
an opportunity for us to really start a family
in a beautiful, tight-knit community," said
Jennifer.
They would find the perfect space in Egg
Harbor in 2019, which now neighbors Wild
Tomato Pizza. She said the Door County
location has a different atmosphere than
their Madison site. If you're making a day
trip to Door County with family or friends,
One Barrel Brewing is the perfect place to
stop. It's very relaxed and more familycentric
with plenty of tables and space
outside to spread out and enjoy some free
live music every Friday. They have several
delicious beers available, the most popular
being its Trolley Red, and serve wine at this
location. They also offer drinks for kids like
root beet and cherry soda and guests can, of
course, order a pizza during their visit.
"It's amazing how people step up to
help one another. Businesses help
each other and you really find that
sense of belonging and happiness
here. It's like being on vacation
every day," said Jennifer. Jennifer is
on several boards in the community
and volunteers a lot of her time
with the Boys and Girls Club of
Door County. She added that with
her time volunteering she learned
that about 60 percent of the
children in the community are
under the poverty line.
"I really felt the need to spend any
time and energy I had to make sure
the community we're living in is
strong and that I could try to make
a difference, even just a little bit,"
explained Jennifer. "I really want my
son to see how giving back and
spending time in the community
and knowing your community will
help tenfold for you."
Being passionate for the
community and wanting to give
back has worked hand and hand for
the business to be a draw for
fundraising events.

"We also try to partner with a lot of pet foster and pet adoption agencies and we bring those
groups out for adoption events and we try to really promote the fundraising. Every
November we work with the community to organize a Thanksgiving run and all of the
proceeds go to local organizations," said Jennifer.
If everything goes as planned, a neighboring Door County city will have an exciting new
addition to their community. Peter and Jennifer will be opening another location in Sturgeon
Bay. They will be breaking ground this September with plans to open next May. This space
will be called the Sturgeon Bay Terrace and will be more focused on events with a band stage
and an outdoor theater for kids. There will also be a roof-top bar with a food tenant. They
will serve wine and all Door County beers to help support other local breweries as well.
"I could see maybe weddings, or rehearsal dinners, people renting it out for birthdays but
then there's enough space to be open to the public and have that separation," said Jennifer.
"We found that we really love what we're doing. It has been so fun. I still make my bartender
put me on the schedule at least once a week to bartend just so I can talk with people and
learn from them, what they're enjoying and where can we do better and just do our best so
they have the best experience."
Jennifer adds that nothing would be possible without their incredible staff and they feel so
grateful to serve the Door County community and its visitors.
"We have been so lucky we have the best staff and we just have the best people working for
us. We're able to take a step back and really let them focus on managing. We truly couldn't do
it without them," explained Jennifer. "This was Peter's dream and it has really turned into my
dream come true as well."
One Barrel Brewing is located at 4633 Market Street in Egg Harbor. Follow them on Facebook
Sister
Written By: Olivia Kassner
Photography By: Julie M. Gile
You may know the name Sister from the sunny sign on
Main Street Fish Creek. Perhaps you’ve visited the shop, or
caught sight of Vicki Rawlins’ flower art prints. Maybe you’re
one of their hundred thousand followers on Instagram, or have
Golden.
seen them featured in HGTV Magazine, Better Homes &
Gardens, or The Jungalow. Surely you’ve heard Sister Golden
Hair by America on the radio at some point. But like the shop’s
namesake, once you’ve met Sister Golden you will keep on
thinking about her.
The small retail shop across the street from the Bayside Tavern
radiates a welcoming energy that makes you want to take a
piece home for yourself so you can experience it every day.
Sister Golden is stocked with handmade treasures from artists
around the world, curated by mother-daughter team Vicki and
Brooke Rawlins. One look at their Moroccan rugs and Turkish
pillows and you’re suddenly following the shop updates online
for their next textile drop so you can find the right piece to
complete your dream living room design.

Sister Golden began as an online shop in 2014 and manifested soon
after as a brick and mortar store in Fish Creek, where locals and
tourists alike say there’s nothing up here like it. Brooke’s passion for
photography and expertise in marketing fused with Vicki’s art and the
pair’s knack for crafty merchandising led to the perfect partnership for
business. They set about forging collaborative relationships with small
artists whose work they admired, sourcing vendors at art, craft, and
gem shows that fit their vibe and aesthetic.
When opening the shop, they were
warned by a previous merchant,
“You’re going to have to buy some
stuff that you don’t like, because
you’ll see that people like certain
things.” Vicki replied, “That’s not
how this is going to work.” Now, in
the middle of their fifth Door County
retail season, they are thriving
without sacrificing their artistic
dream. One change since opening
Brooke has seen is the ease of
discovering artists now that more
people post their work online and on
social media. The women also love
receiving product recommendations
from shoppers or asking about
where a guest found their jewelry.
While stylish merchandise draws
many shoppers in, the shop’s most
unique feature is the back room that
houses the Balancing Mother Nature
Gallery, showcasing Vicki’s flower
art. The natural sunlight sparkling
through agate window hangings
highlights bright white walls filled
with prints of her intricate botanical
creations. When planning the shop
layout, Vicki remembers getting
excited about all the storage space
the room had to offer. “Mom,”
Brooke recalls saying, “that’s not
storage, it’s your gallery!”
Exhibiting her flower art was a leap
for Vicki. While she has never not
been an artist, using botanicals as a
medium was a relatively new
venture for her. She meticulously
balances flowers, leaves, and other
natural elements to create faces and
magical miniature scenes that beg
you to spend some time imagining
yourself in them. Once her work is
complete, it is photographed and
recycled back into nature or the
next art piece. Despite the
photographic evidence that is
turned into a high quality print, the
process itself is a temporary shuffle
of moving parts. This relieves the
pressure of the creative exercise,
but also presents more opportunity
for Vicki to criticize her own work,
as she can’t go back and change
something as if she could with other
mediums like paint.
The reception of her art gallery and
the shop overall has been
overwhelmingly positive. “There isn’t
a day that goes by that we don’t have
such gratitude for it all,” Vicki says of
the shop’s success. She and Brooke
are sourcing the merchandise they
love and would use in their own
homes that embodies their true
style, while supporting small artists
and promoting a more sustainable
lifestyle.

lot
Speckled amongst the artisan products and
Vicki’s flower art are one-of-a-kind vintage
goods that the women themselves have
thrifted in both Door County and beyond.
This is an expression of their own personal
design, marrying vintage with both artisan
and Mid-Century Modern pieces to create
an eclectic look that feels complete.
It’s a slow process to find the perfect
thrifted piece if you’ve got something
particular in mind, so Vicki and Brooke do
the legwork to bring those curated items to
the storefront. They turn what could seem
like a patchwork assortment of clutter into
cohesive layers of decor. Both women have
talent in interior design and offer advice on
styling a room.
“There are some things you need to spend
money on,” Vicki recommends. “Have a
good sofa, have a good rug.” She suggests
sourcing a few quality pieces that have
longevity and that you can work the rest of
your design off of. Take that dream
Moroccan rug and pick a color from it,
incorporate pillows or a paint color based
off that; then top your thrifted end table
with a lamp from a big box store for
affordability.
Brooke loves to mix up textiles: “Take your
old pillows off your couch and buy two that
you are in love with, and things will spiral
off that.” Pillows and other textiles like their
sought-after poufs are an easy seasonal
switch to keep your living room feeling
fresh and updated.
Building Satisfaction
Since 1950
In need of your own pillow face-lift? Vicki and
Brooke often work with clients via text or
email, as their online storefront attracts
shoppers from all over the country. Working
off of dimensions, photos, and budget, they
can help design an African basket wall or a
textile makeover from Door County and make
decor recommendations to help achieve their
clients’ style.
The easiest way to get Sister Golden in your
own home is to mark your current calendar
for their Flower Art Calendar release, which
contains twelve high-quality prints of Vicki’s
flower creations. Updates for the release, how
to frame the prints after use, and other
interior design tips are all featured on their
blog and Instagram @sistergoldenshop. Follow
along, and you’ll want to be a Sister Golden
girl too.
Sharing a meal with friends, family, colleagues, and
strangers has long been an experience that
connects. Savory Spoon Cooking School and
Marketplace in Ellison Bay not only connects people
through eating, but through learning together in a
relaxed, inviting environment.
Janice Thomas and her amazing staff have been
welcoming guests into Savory Spoon for 18 years,
which has set up shop in a beautiful 1869 historic
schoolhouse downtown Ellison Bay. The building is
now outfitted with five cooking stations, a state-ofthe-art
kitchen, gathering space, and marketplace
shop. “Come have fun in our Kitchen” is the team’s
motto, and they definitely live by that motto. Upon
arrival at Savory Spoon, guests are greeted and
invited to leave their personal items in the entryway
lockers, easing the mood and setting the tone for an
intimate and educational evening in Janice’s kitchen.
The team serves an excellent variety of wine during
the class, enhancing that relaxing atmosphere of a
home kitchen.
Guests are outfitted with an apron and a clipboard
with the five recipes that will be prepared
throughout the class, and everyone gathers in the
main kitchen. The lead chef for the evening, whether
that is Janice or a member of her team, will walk the
intimate group (each class hosts a maximum of 16
guests) through the recipes they will be learning to
cook that evening. Guests are encouraged to ask
questions during the demonstration, and take notes
on their recipe printouts for reference. “My vision
for Savory Spoon is to educate people about how to
enjoy preparing food, and that it can be
approachable at any level they choose to take,”
shares owner, Janice Thomas.
Following the demonstration, everyone groups off and selects
a recipe that they will prepare for the entire class. Savory
Spoon’s helpful and knowledgeable team circulates the room
answering questions and helping the guests with their
recipes. Everyone jumps right in and starts cooking, whether
they are preparing a delicious pasta dish with ravioli, apples,
and arugula or a flaky delicious baklava. The experience of
cooking with friends, relatives, or strangers is so fun and
rewarding, and an excellent opportunity to meet new friends
or reconnect with loved ones.
The staff at Savory Spoon makes the experience of learning
and cooking easy and carefree—all of the ingredients for each
recipe are provided to each small cooking group, so that the
group is simply responsible for the preparation of each
ingredient, whether that is chopping, toasting, or measuring.
All of the equipment is state-of-the-art, only enhancing the
cooking experience and helping those new or unfamiliar with
the kitchen feel at ease.
Upon completion of the dishes, the small groups present
their culinary creations to the entire class, and everyone sits
down to a delicious meal. Wine and conversation are
encouraged, and each group regales the class with their
cooking experience. New friends and new skills are developed
throughout the evening, everyone finding connections to
their group members through their kitchen experiences. By
the end of the night, the 16 people you met only hours before
have become your comrades in cooking.
Savory Spoon provides lovely, intimate cooking experiences
fit for any occasion and any experience level—date night, girls
night out, special time with your parents, reconnecting with
old friends, or go solo to make some new ones! The
environment is so comfortable and inviting, and no matter a
person’s skill level, everyone walks away with a new or
improved culinary skill and recipes to make their own.
