Freedom camping changes likely
Submissions
being
considered by
hearings panel
PUBLIC SUBMISSIONS on
the freedom camping bylaw
covering Banks Peninsula are
being considered this week.
The hearings panel began
considering the 97 public submissions
on potential changes to
the Freedom Camping Bylaw on
Monday.
The bylaw was introduced five
years ago.
The proposed bylaw changes
include creating a specified
area at Naval Point in Lyttelton
where freedom campers can
stay and limiting the number
of freedom camping spots to 18
vehicles.
It also includes creating a City
Coastal Restricted Zone – where
freedom campers could stay for
up to four nights in any 30-day
period.
This new zone would prevent
campers using the current 500m
rule to move short distances
every few days and stay in the
coastal area for extended periods
of time.
Furthermore, it would introduce
a new rule to encourage
CHANGING LAWS: Public submissions on changes to a freedom camping bylaw
affecting Banks Peninsula will be considered this week.
campers to be more careful
about how they set up their
camping vehicles and any other
camping gear. The rule would
prevent campers from blocking
thoroughfares and spreading
out.
A report prepared by
city council staff for the
hearings panel said most of
the submissions received are
generally supportive of the
proposed bylaw changes,
although some disagreed, and
others put forward suggestions
to further improve the bylaw.
The hearings panel will
consider all matters raised in
the submissions and seek advice
from city council staff before
making recommendations to
the city council on the final
form of the bylaw.
The aim is to have an
updated Freedom Camping
Bylaw in place by the start of the
summer.
festival. To join the team email
The team is also fundraising
for the event and are looking
for donations of old tools, nails
and nuts and bolts, ornaments,
cutlery, pots and pans, tins and
EVENT POSTPONED
THe Sculpture on the Peninsula
finale event has been postponed
to January 28-30 next year. The
art event was due to be held from
November 5-7. However, the
postponement comes after the
uncertainty of ongoing alert level
restrictions. New Zealand needs
to be at alert level 1 in order for
the event to run.
STOP SIGN
A stop control sign will be
placed against Totara Dr at its
intersection with Monarch Dr
in Duvauchelle after the area
has recently seen increased
development and increased traffic
movements, resulting in raised
concerns from the community
about safety.
