Leftover yarn from the sweatermakes a warm and cushy cowlI had originally planned on usingOdette to make a popular freeshawl pattern available fromRavelry, which is why I madeswatches of the mesh pattern.After doing the color work on theOlympia Pullover, I changed mymind and decided to do somemore color work. I wear cowls alot during the winter and haveto give them up for launderingnow and then. As such, I neededanother one.Leftover Odette after making the Olympia PulloverThis cowl is knit from the bottomup, and decreases along the wayto make it narrower at the top. Idecided to start with Bordeauxas there was more yarn left overfrom both the sweater and thesock projects than the othercolors. Gauge is not as importantfor this project, but it will affectthe overall size. I decided to usea US 6 [4.0mm] needle sincethat’s what I’d used on the colorwork section of the sweater andwas happy with the result.How much of each color isneeded for this project is difficultto say. I can tell you that I still hadleft over yarn after completingthe cowl, just not as much. Thetotal weight of the cowl is 1.75ozor 50 grams, which implies that itused 241yds [220m] in total.It’s best to use a stretchy cast onand off so it can easily be pulledover your head. The stretchy caston method I use most often is avariation of the Long Tail cast on.The difference is that I alternatethe position of the tail yarnover my thumb for knit vs. purlstitches. I use this method whencasting on stitches for top downsocks and it provides amplestretch when putting them on oroff. For the cast off, I’ve includedinstructions for Jeny’s SurprisinglyStretchy Bind Off.
