GreenLight Fund | BOSTON — 2021 Golf Program

This year’s 2021 GreenLight Fund Golf Tournament Program. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament to support GreenLight’s newest portfolio organization, Working on Womanhood. As in years past, we utilize this media tool to highlight the holes and course particulars, but we also impart a heavy hand on the work GreenLight Fund has produced over the year. It is a great awareness piece and finds itself landing on the desk of those who have not even attended the event. It is a great tool to continue building connections with the organization through the 13 portfolios it supports.

A Ryder Cup style tournament
to support GreenLight’s newest
portfolio organization

Thank you for joining us in support of the
GreenLight Fund and our 13th portfolio organization:
We are so excited to welcome you back to Weston Golf Club and
GreenLight’s Golf for Good 2021!
We are incredibly proud to welcome Working on Womanhood
(WOW), our 13th portfolio organization, to Boston! WOW, a part
of the Youth Guidance program alongside Becoming A Man (BAM),
is a multifaceted, school year-long group counseling and clinical
mentoring program. WOW works to improve social-emotional
competencies for girls in 6th-12th grades exposed to traumatic
stressors in high-risk and under-resourced communities. Launched
in 2011, the school-based program runs throughout the academic
year and serves over 2,000 students in 46 schools in Chicago and
Kansas City as of the 2020–2021 school year.
WOW is a program for the girls and young women of Boston and
will fulfill a need that has been present in our city for a long time.
This selection cycle looked different than any one that has come
before. As we navigated much of the diligence process via Zoom,
the incredible impact WOW has on its participants, alumnae, and staff
transcended through the virtual space. We heard the inspiring stories of
girls who found a group of friends, a supportive mentor, a place to turn in
tough times, and much more by joining WOW. As we spoke to them, we
saw how they wholeheartedly exemplified the WOW core values. The
socioemotional support WOW provides was evident as participants and
alumnae spoke about their life experiences. WOW’s focus on leadership
was clear as we heard the young women’s experiences in school. WOW’s
Visionary Goal Setting came through as the girls each shared where
they were on the path to achieving their dreams for the future. WOW
supported the young women in developing these skills and helped them
realize their full potential.
Now, more than ever, we need programs like WOW to help our girls and
young women develop and refine socioemotional skills while receiving
additional support services within the school day. As we work to rebuild
and repair not only our city but our community and our relationships to
become a stronger, more equitable place, our focus turns to the young
people of our city — especially the young girls of color who uniquely
experience the intersection of gender and racial inequities. We have an
opportunity to create a community of caring around today’s youth and
help them build the strength and resiliency to create a better future for
us all.
We hope you will join us in supporting WOW, and the entire Youth
Guidance family in Boston, Chicago and beyond, as they continue to grow
and serve the young people of our city. Proceeds from today’s tournament
will go to support GreenLight Boston’s work as we bring more innovative
solutions, like WOW, to our city. We plan to remain innovative and
flexible to the needs of the time, working with the community to identify
organizations that can tear down barriers and open opportunities. And we
will do this with our long-time supporters and champions — especially you!
The GreenLight Fund transforms the lives of children, youth and families in high-poverty
urban areas through the GreenLight Method.
• Identify critical unmet needs
• Import innovative, entrepreneurial programs that can have a significant, measurable impact, and
• Galvanize local support to help programs reach and sustain impact in the new city.
We call our approach the GreenLight Method. The GreenLight Method is a five-part process that focuses our investments where
they will make the most impact. It’s how we stay nimble enough to address pressing needs and seize opportunities as they arise.
WE DISCOVER
We assess the local landscape to discover
opportunities for transformation: urgent
issues that are currently not being directly
addressed, and where smart, effective
approaches would make a significant
difference in the lives of low-income children
and families.
WE SCOUT
We search the country for the most
effective solutions: the nonprofits that
are creating new ways to deliver services,
connect with their clients and sustain their
work.
WE SELECT
We look at hundreds of nonprofits each
year. Through rigorous due diligence we
select the nonprofit that is the best fit for
the community—that meets identified needs
with innovation and impact that can be
successfully replicated.
WE INVEST
We invest our funds, time and passion.
Our community connections and strategic
advice help organizations ramp up and start
producing direct, meaningful change in the
community. We continue this support so
that each organization can thrive over time.
WE MEASURE
We measure the growth and effectiveness of
our investments and share that information
with investors, partners and the local
community
About
WOW Working On WomanhoodSM
WOW
A flagship initiative of Youth Guidance, Working On Womanhood (WOW) is an in-school, groupbased
counseling and clinical mentoring program that cultivates leadership, promotes mental
health, and fosters the social-emotional skills of girls and young women in grades 6 -12. To do so,
WOW applies a therapy-based approach that addresses gender-specific needs by increasing selfimage
and self-worth for female-identifying students. WOW strengthens critical protective factors
and reduces high-risk behaviors among girls by helping them to cope with negative thoughts,
interrogate their automatic responses, respond reflectively in high-stakes situations, solve problems, and build self-efficacy to make
positive and healthy decisions, and ultimately, be leaders in their schools and their communities. In recognition of WOW’s efforts
supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of girls and young women of color, WOW (with BAM) was awarded the 2020 Advancing
Minority Health Award by the American Psychiatric Association.
WOW’s dynamic curriculum is designed around five Core Values —
each serving as a building block in reducing girls’ risk and promoting
positive social, academic, and health outcomes.
1. Self-Awareness – I have power. I know who I am. I accept who I am.
I inspire others to become who they want to be.
2. Emotional Intelligence – I am resilient. I recognize and use all of
my emotions. I respond in healthy ways to other’s emotions.
3. Healthy Relationships – I respect myself and others. I maintain
healthy boundaries in my relationships. I communicate my needs
and wants. I advocate for myself.
4. Leadership – I am a leader. I set goals. I am accountable.
I seek mentors to show me the way. I take a role in improving
my community.
5. Visionary Goal Setting – I have goals. I am motivated.
I overcome barriers. I work on my goals every day.
WOW’s Impact
Since WOW’s launch in 2011 in Chicago, its impact on young women, in
particularly young women of color, has been profound. To date, the program
has served nearly 3,000 young women, equipping them with the skills to
overcome barriers (personal and societal) and to become leaders.
62% of WOW participants experienced fewer PTSD symptoms*
71% of WOW participants experienced fewer depression symptoms*
96% of WOW participants reported that the program has helped
them make better decisions for themselves.
*Of those starting in the clinical range
Plans for Boston
Under the leadership of Executive Director, Shawn Brown, WOW will launch in
three Boston Public Schools, directly serving 150 young women in Year One.
WOW will expand to nine schools by the fourth year of implementation to
serve 450 young women. As with the BAM program, it is the aim of WOW to
expand within BPS as well as neighboring school districts — Cambridge Public
Schools and Somerville Public Schools — and ultimately across the state.
Shawn Brown joined Youth Guidance in 2017, taking on
the role Executive Director and leading the expansion of
the Becoming A Man (BAM) program to Boston. Under
his leadership, BAM Boston has grown from serving three
Boston public schools and 150 young men to now providing
direct services to nearly 600 young men across 11 schools
and three school districts — Boston, Cambridge, and
Somerville. With the expansion of WOW, Shawn—working
closely with the WOW Training Academy and Boston Advisory Council—
will lead both programs, safeguarding the fidelity of service delivery and
leveraging partnerships to ensure WOW and BAM scholars, alike, have
access to opportunities that will support their personal, academic, and
professional goals.
Prior to Youth Guidance, Shawn served as Executive Director of Diamond
Educators Mentoring—an organization he founded and is dedicated to
improving the academic performance of low-income and high-risk youth.
Shawn has a passion for mentoring and more than 20 years of experience
in the field of youth development and nonprofit leadership in Boston. His
expertise and contributions to the field of youth development have landed
him on national panels—hosted by My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, the Hunt
Institute, and NAACP Boston—to explore issues such as race, education, and
equity as they relate to young people. Shawn received a BA in Sociology
from Merrimack College and holds a Nonprofit Management and Leadership
Certificate from Boston University’s School of Management.
Ngozi Harris joined Youth Guidance in 2011 and has been
instrumental in the development, success, and expansion
of the Working On Woman (WOW) program over the past
decade. Ngozi is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
(LCPC) and currently serves as WOW Director of Staff and
Program Development. In this role, she oversees program
implementation and staff training, ensuring fidelity in
the delivery of the WOW program in Chicago, Boston,
Kansas City, and Dallas. Prior to this, Ngozi held the positions of WOW
Senior Curriculum Specialist, WOW Supervisor, as well as WOW Counselor,
through which she provided group counseling, mentoring, and other direct,
psychosocial supports to hundreds of girls and young women on the South
and West sides of Chicago.
Her experience prior to joining Youth Guidance and the WOW program
include providing therapy for trauma-afflicted children and adolescents,
Department of Children and Family Services case coordination, case
management for families in crisis, and working with the Illinois Department
of Corrections and faith-based communities. Ngozi received an MA in
Clinical Professional Psychology from Roosevelt University and her BA in
Public Policy from the University of Chicago.
WESTON
GOLF CLUB
A Donald Ross Course
1PAR 4
Since 1894, The Weston Golf Club has earned its
reputation for honoring the skill of the game of golf.
The Par 72, 18-hole golf course was originally designed by
Donald Ross and is the focal point of the club. Although the
Club opened in 1894, the current location was built in
1916-1917. Donald Ross designed the original nine holes
and the expanded par-71 layout, which opened in 1923.
The two newest holes (11 and 12, designed by
Geoffrey Cornish) were added in 1965. These replaced
a very short par 3 and one par 4, and brought the course
to its current par-72 layout. Improvements during
the 1990’s included new tees on 16 and 17.
1
The first hole at Weston is a straight forward
opening par 4 that can be reached in two
shots with a good drive.
A player that avoids the bunkers to the left of
the fairway and the heavy rough on the right
will be rewarded.
The green is well guarded by bunkers
to the left and short right but
Donald Ross has created lots of
room to run up on longer shots.
2PAR 5
3PAR 3
The second hole at Weston is a
demanding 3-shot, straightaway par 5.
A drive in the fairway allows the player to
carefully navigate the layup area that is
heavily bunkered.
The third shot is played uphill to a tiered
green, with a severe false front.
Depending on the hole location, the
approach shot can be difficult and putting
as well if you are not on the proper level.
2
3
The third hole at Weston is a long,
downhill par 3 has a classic look of a
New England, Donald Ross golf hole.
The green is surrounded by a collection
area on the left side and is protected
by a large bunker on the right.
The green slopes from rear-left to
front-right and it may be difficult
for a player to control their speed.
4PAR 4
5PAR 3
The fourth hole at Weston is a long par 4
that will test even the best of players.
The landing zone is guarded by a very
penalizing fairway bunker.
A good drive down the left side will leave
a short to mid iron into one of the most
difficult putting surfaces at Weston.
The green is guarded by bunkers both
to the left and front right, with a narrow,
steep collection area behind the green.
There is a large mound in the middle of
the putting surface that creates many
interesting hole locations.
Thank you to our generous
TEE SPONSOR
4
5
The fifth hole at Weston
is the final hole in a stretch of long
and demanding shots that a player faces
to start their round.
This is the most demanding tee shot of
all the par 3’s here at Weston.
The green is raised and heavily bunkered
with a treacherous chipping area to the
right of the green. Birdies are rare, and
pars are always a good score.
6PAR 5
7PAR 4
The sixth hole at Weston is a classic risk/
reward par 5. The player must decide if
they want to be aggressive and take their
drive over the mound, left of the landing
zone. Players may also play short of the
mound or to the right.
Although it’s a huge advantage, the tee
shot does not require a long drive, but
rather a well-positioned drive.
Reachable in two shots, this large green
slopes from back to front with a steep
false front that will challenge the player
with multiple shot varieties and a difficult
putting surface.
6
7
The seventh hole at Weston
is the club’s signature hole.
The hole lends itself to either a
conservative or aggressive tee shot.
An aggressive play off the tee allows
for a short iron or wedge into
a green that slopes back to front,
favoring the player.
This is a great birdie opportunity with a
good tee shot in the fairway.
The green is severely sloped from
back left to front right which places a
premium on your approach shot.
8PAR 4
9PAR 4
The eighth hole at Weston is a classic
short par 4 with a narrow fairway.
Trees and a rocky landscape on the
right side challenge the player
to hit a precise tee shot.
Then the player is faced with a short iron
or wedge approach to a perched,
narrow, and two-tiered green that is
very difficult to putt if the approach
is not placed properly.
8
9
The ninth hole at Weston is a very
demanding finish to the front 9.
The player faces a downhill tee shot
to a narrow, sloping fairway into a
prevailing wind.
The green is receptive to approach shots
due to its severe slope from
rear left to front right, but is
very treacherous to putt.
11
10PAR 3
PAR 5
The tenth hole at Weston
is a beautiful mid-range par 3,
with par always being a good score.
The eleventh hole at Weston has
water to the right of the fairway that
also needs to be carried on a player’s
approach shot to the green.
While it requires a modest 165 yard shot,
balls that aren’t hit to the putting surface
are very difficult to get up and down.
The green is raised and falls off
on all sides with deep bunkers
guarding the front left and front right.
10
11
A good drive off the tee to the left or
short off the pond is faced with a long
approach. This long and gradually
sloping green is guarded on both sides
by bunkers and is the number
2 handicap hole.
The putting surface is heavily
contoured and difficult to read.
12PAR 4
13PAR 4
The twelfth hole at Weston is a great
birdie opportunity that is sandwiched
between two difficult par 4’s.
Players have the option between
hitting a short or a longer
and aggressive tee shot.
The approach shot is played over
a pond to a large green with a severe
false front and bunkers on either side.
12
The thirteenth hole at Weston is a
bunkerless, dog leg left par 4 that is one
of the most difficult holes on the course.
The blind fairway bends to the left
between the trees that requires a long
drive to reach the green in two shots.
The approach shot is placed
to a raised green that has two tiers
and many subtle breaks which can
make it one of the most difficult putting
surfaces on the course.
14PAR 5
15PAR 5
The fourteenth hole at Weston
is a beautiful par 5 that is
reachable in two for long hitters.
There is plenty of room to drive the ball,
but a drive that is hit left or right
will have a difficult time navigating
the bunkers of the layup area.
The approach shot is played to a
punchbowl style green that is surrounded
by bunkers and collection areas.
14
15
The fifteenth hole at Weston is
a heavily bunkered, mid-range par 5
with out of bounds to the
left over the stone wall.
The player has the option to hit
a fairway wood or hybrid
off the tee to avoid these obstacles.
The approach shot is played to a raised
green that is severely sloped from rear
left to front right with a false front.
It is paramount that players stay below
the hole on their approach shot.
17PAR 3
The sixteenth hole at Weston is a great
par 4 with our signature logo tree just to
the right of the player’s landing zone.
The player must avoid a series
of deep, penalizing bunkers just
to the left of the fairway.
The approach shot is played to a very
small, classic Donald Ross turtleneck
green. This green is difficult to hold from
anywhere other than the fairway.
The green slopes from back to front
and is very difficult to putt.
16
17
The seventeenth hole at Weston is
a downhill par 3 that is guarded by
bunkers in the front left and right
with a collection area to the
rear left and directly behind the green.
A tee shot to the center of this green
will give a player a great
opportunity at birdie.
