Greetings from the allotments

Last month I said we were looking forward to our

annual BBQ. This year we had a scarecrow making

for the children. We were blessed with a lovely day

and great fun was had by all. We had a bumper turn

out 50 people it was lovely to sit and chat in the sun

while the children enjoyed themselves. I must say

there were some really innovative scarecrows. Our

thanks to Ray Joyner who organised the whole thing

in his normal thorough manner.

It seems that we are always having a party. We also

had our afternoon tea. At this event the prizes for

the best kept allotments are presented.

The names of the winners are as follows: -

• The best kept single plot: Richard Taylor

• The best multiple plots: Henry Lovick

• The best starter plot: Anthony Joachim

• The best beginner: George Szlachtycz

• The Danielle Chilvers Award for the prettiest plot:

Alison Ingham

Once again, we spent a pleasant afternoon chatting

and eating calorie free delights!

It seems that the growing season was held back by

the very variable weather earlier in the year and

now the extremes of alternate wet, cold, hot and dry

have brought an early end to most of our crops. I

don’t think we have ever pulled up our sweetcorn

this early. We have dug over the empty plots and

those we are going to leave have been sown with

Red Clover. This is supposed to improve the soil and

can be turned in next year. Here’s hoping.
