Following his first goal of the campaign in the win over
Stoke City at the weekend, we speak to the returning Lys
Mousset as he aims for a regular place in United’s team.
We hear about the story of a famous number 10 shirt
which resides in the Legends of the Lane as curator
John Garrett goes behind the scenes in our Secrets of
the Museum article.
October is Black History Month, so we hear the story of
Ian Benjamin, the first modern-day black footballer to
play for the Blades.
UTB follows the snappers at Bramall Lane as the first
team squad line up for the annual team photocall.
MANAGER’S NOTES
“Nothing is won in mid-October, there’s still plenty of points to play for between
now and May next year, but I’d like us to start putting pressure on the top clubs
to let them know that Sheffield United are a major force in this division”
Like every Blades fan, I enjoyed
Saturday’s victory and the manner in
which we fought back to collect the
points – if we can match or better that display
tonight, I will be very pleased.
It may have taken two late goals, but I think
we deserved to beat Stoke City, our overall
performance was nice to watch and be part of.
We had a good opening 45 minutes and
created more than the opposition, we moved
the ball well and they had to defend well for long
periods. In the second half they scored a goal
which was too easy, and we must do better in
those situations. The goal produced a flat period
when maybe they got on top, we didn’t react
correctly in a physical or a mental sense, but we
made changes and it was crucial in us turning
the result around. We finished excellently and
could have scored more goals, but we must be
satisfied with the three points.
After the game, there was a lot of talk about
the substitutes and the impact that they had
but it is part of my job to make these decisions
and it emphasises that we have a quality squad.
On Saturday it was the turn of McGoldrick and
Mousset to take the headlines, but it could so
easily be McBurnie or Brewster in the next few
games because all of the squad bring qualities
that we need to win matches.
Generally, when reflecting, I thought that
it was a huge boost for everyone, it was
psychologically very important as the club has
endured some tough times in recent months.
It could prove to be an important win against a
very good team in the Championship.
We quickly move onto the next challenge and
the prize remains the same, a win and points.
We offer a very warm welcome to everyone from
Millwall who has made the trip to tonight’s game.
I make no excuses for emphasising the
point that we are following the process, trying
to improve game by game. We know the final
target of everyone connected to the club, but
it won’t be achieved today, gradually I think we
are moving in the right direction; the focus is
always on the next opposition and trying to build
up our total.
The Championship is unpredictable, and
games are usually very close, we paid the price
for not being as clinical as we could earlier in the
season, but we have worked hard defensively
and offensively on the training ground, we
always want to improve our positional play and
shape, specific to our play in any given game.
Nothing is won in mid-October, there’s still
plenty of points to play for between now and
May next year, but I’d like us to start putting
pressure on the top clubs to let them know
that Sheffield United are a major force in
this division.
PLAYER TALK
× JOHN LOOKING FOR BOUNCE BACK
Following the initial
international break,
United’s season saw
an upward trend and John
Egan is seeking a similar
response as the Blades look to
climb the Championship table.
Victories over Peterborough,
Hull and Derby kick-stated
United’s campaign last month,
with the improvement, in part,
in line with the extra time taken
on the training field due to
internationals.
Whilst John, and a handful
of others, have been away, the
majority of United’s first team
squad have been working
R John Egan wants to see a bounce back for the Blades
hard behind the scenes at
Shirecliffe as new boss Slaviša
Jokanović continues to fine
tune his blueprint for success.
Now the Republic of Ireland
international is keen to see
the hard work transpire into
points, as United prepare for
a tough showdown tonight
against Millwall.
He said: “We turned
the corner after the last
international break. We want
to get back on a winning run
again. We’re looking ahead
now to some tough games,
but we’ll do everything we
can to win some matches and
get some points on the board.
We’re not where we want to
be, but it was always going
to be tough. We have a long
season ahead; we’re always
looking to the next game
without looking too far ahead.
We all know what the end
goal is, and I feel like we’re
getting better as a team. We’re
improving all the time and
hopefully we can keep picking
up results game-by-game.”
On the international stage,
the Republic of Ireland have
made some strides forward
after a tough time of late.
John played in both games
recently as the Irish defeated
Azerbaijan and Qatar, with the
Blades ace taking the armband
in the absence of Seamus
Coleman for the first game.
He added: “We had
two positive results and
we produced two good
performances. It is great for the
camp and great for confidence,
so it was a really good spell
for us. I am hugely proud to
captain the team. It is a special
feeling to play for your country
and to wear the armband is
an unbelievable feeling. I’ll
cherish it forever.
“When you go away and
have a couple of good
performances under your belt,
you then come back to the
club with a spring in your step
so we’re back in and looking
ahead to the upcoming games
at Sheffield United now.”
× ROBIN SETTLING INTO LIFE AT THE LANE
Goalkeeper Robin
Olsen is beginning to
enjoy his time at
Bramall Lane as he settles into
life in the Steel City following a
hectic start to his
United career.
The Roma loanee made his
debut against Preston after
only briefly meeting his new
team-mates as he completed
an international stint with
Sweden, followed by several
days of quarantine.
Fast forward a month, and
the giant stopper has made
the number one jersey his own
after starting United’s last six
Championship outings.
Robin said: “It is always
hard to come to a new team
and club, it will take time, but
things are going well. I have
played a few games now with
the back four, that will still take
time also, but it’s going better
than in the beginning when
everything was still new to me,
so I am happy.”
After United’s victory over
Stoke City at the weekend,
the Blades face another tough
encounter with Millwall making
the journey to S2.
There is also the prospect
of playing in his first South
Yorkshire derby against
Barnsley at the weekend,
but the Sweden international
says he is just focused on
the next game.
He remarked: “I always
take one game at a time, stay
R Robin OIsen says he’s enjoying being at Bramall Lane
focused on the next game
but of course anything can
happen, and you can move
up or down fast in this league.
I think we just need to keep
focusing on the next game,
play well and win the games,
that’s what we need to do.”
Robin recently returned
from a successful stint with
Sweden where he played
his part in two clean sheets
following victories against
Kosovo and Greece.
Sweden currently top their
qualifying group ahead of
Spain, with a big showdown
between the two sides firmly
on the horizon.
“We had two really important
games, and we needed the
six points,” explained the
31-year-old.
“We have a tough game
against Spain away next
month, so it was good for us
to get the wins, and to get
two clean sheets, that was
good as well.
“We have Georgia away too,
so we need to win that as well,
but we are in a good position,
and it is up to us, we know
what to do.”
× SPECIAL WINNING MOMENT FOR DIDZY
Saturday’s matchwinner
David
McGoldrick says his
late winner against Stoke
ranks high amongst some of
his many special moments at
Bramall Lane.
Brought off the bench by
boss Slaviša Jokanović with
United trailing to the Potters,
the former Republic of Ireland
international was instrumental
in Lys Mousset’s equaliser with
10 minutes remaining, before
he netted the winner after a
low cross by Enda Stevens.
The striker, who has
achieved plenty in red and
white down the years, admits
his impressive cameo was
high on his favourite list as
United returned from the
international break to snatch
maximum points.
“It’s right up there,” he
said of the goal in front of
a packed Kop.
“It’s great to come on and
influence the game and get
my first goal of the season.
I’ve been out of the team
for a time with injuries and
I didn’t come on in the last
game, so I’ve had to grit my
teeth and really work hard
to get back in. I knew I had
to come on and make an
impression for the lads, and
I am just delighted.
“For the first goal, I got
played a pass by Ben (Davies),
and I could see the defender
charging up, so I know Sharpy
R David enjoys the moment after netting the winner against Stoke
plays off my movement, so
I flicked it around the corner.
He’s got it and with his quality
he’s played it back to me
and I’ve seen Moose in the
area, so the ball went to him,
and he finished well. It was a
great team goal.
“The second one, well
I know Enda Stevens’ quality
because I’ve played with
him for years. He’s found me
in the area, I’ve got a good
connection on it, it has taken a
deflection and gone in. It was
such a great feeling.”
Coming back from an
injury, the 33-year-old knows
competition is fierce for
a starting berth, but he’s
ready for the fight as he
seeks more game time in the
coming weeks.
He remarked: “It was great
to have two weeks of training
under my belt to get my fitness
up. I am ready to fight for my
place, the quality that we have
got in the front line is as good
as it has been for years. I’ll
have to fight to play but I am
chomping at the bit.”
Lys Mousset
PLAYER
IN FOCUS
THE BIG INTERVIEW
UTB’s Mark Woollas catches up with LYS MOUSSET...
Lys Mousset is optimistic his goal in
Saturday’s win against Stoke City will
be the catalyst for an upturn in fortunes
with the striker now fully recovered from a
hamstring problem that had hampered his
progress in the opening couple of months of
the campaign.
And the 25-year-old striker, who netted six
times including five during a 10-game purple
patch in United’s first campaign back in the
Premier League, believes he still has a point to
prove to Blades fans who, in his opinion, have
yet to see the best of him in a red and white
striped shirt.
Having impressed boss Slaviša Jokanović
during a disrupted pre-season, Lys fought off
competition from a number of fellow forwards to
start the season in attack and having endured
some gruelling double sessions during the
recent international break, the Frenchman
hopes his strike against the Potters is the first
of many this season as he pushes for a recall to
the starting XI tonight.
Buoyed by the success at the weekend, Lys
is backing a ‘talented’ squad to make up ground
on those above them in the table in a busy
spell before the next round of internationals
in November, as United look to position
themselves to mount a sustained promotion
push during the second half of the season.
UTB 13
⊲ UTB: How happy were you to score
in front of the Kop to start Saturday’s
comeback victory over Stoke City?
⊲ LM: “It was a special moment for me
– my first goal in the Championship,
but it needs to be the start of a run of
games for me in this team. The way
we play, I’m confident I’ll score goals
because we create a lot of chances
but it’s also nice to get that first goal
of the season, especially having been
injured. We were more than on top
against Stoke, but when they scored,
we struggled for a while and the
manager had to look to his bench.
He made three positive changes
and David McGoldrick made a huge
impact, he started the move and
claimed the assist for my goal, then
grabbed the winner from Enda’s cross
minutes later. It’s easy to say it after,
but we deserved the win and it also
showed the strength we have in the
squad, that’s really encouraging.”
“IT FELT REALLY GOOD TO BE
BACK OUT ON THE PITCH WITH
THE LADS, MISSING OUT THROUGH
INJURY ISN’T NICE AND IT IS
VERY FRUSTRATING WHEN YOU
CAN’T INFLUENCE GAMES”
⊲ UTB: How pleased were you to
return to action against Bournemouth
just prior to the international break?
⊲ LM: “It felt really good to be back out
on the pitch with the lads, missing out
through injury isn’t nice and it is very
frustrating when you can’t influence
games. I’d not done a lot of full training
really, but the manager named four or
five attacking options on the bench
and I was pleased when he gave me
an opportunity to get back out there
late on and on another day, I could
have scored the equaliser. I made my
run because I expected John Egan
to win his header at the back post,
but unfortunately my header hit the
crossbar and bounced out, I probably
made too good a contact with the ball
from such close range.”
⊲ UTB: It must have been doubly
frustrating to damage your hamstring
in the season opener against
Birmingham City, especially having
impressed the new manager in what
was a disrupted pre-season?
⊲ LM: “Definitely. I felt really good in
pre-season, I worked extremely hard
during the summer, and I was more
determined than ever to make a good
impression following the permanent
change of manager and appointment
of Slaviša Jokanović. I’d got myself in
excellent shape and honestly thought
I’d start the season well having scored
a few times in the friendlies, but
unfortunately, I stretched for a ball
early into the second half and straight
away I knew I damaged my hamstring
and the scan confirmed I’d be missing
quite a few of the opening weeks of
the season.”
⊲ UTB: Tell us how much you have
enjoyed working under Slaviša
Jokanović and would it be fair to say
he has already willingly demonstrated
the faith he has in your ability?
⊲ LM: “The manager has been
fantastic with me since the day he
arrived at the club and now I want
to repay him with a lot of goals, to
help the team. In the chats we’ve
had between me, him and his staff,
I’ve been pleased to know they have
confidence in what I can bring to the
team and I’m desperate to not only
prove them right but also show the
supporters my best form, because last
season was frustrating not only for the
club, being relegated from the Premier
League, but also I didn’t really make a
contribution in just 13 appearances.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

14 UTB
⊲ UTB: Despite returning to action,
albeit it briefly prior to the break,
has your focus over the last fortnight
been on trying to regain full fitness
once again?
⊲ LM: “Yes. We have had a few players
away on international duty, but training
has been good, and I’ve done two
sessions on certain days to try and
get myself right back in contention for
when the action resumes this month,
I just want to play and contribute to
the team climbing the table and a few
other lads who have been injured
have been doing the same too. The
team struggled in the opening weeks
of the season, but we had a really
good run after the first international
break of the season and that has been
talked about openly because we
need to pick points up quickly before
another break around the corner in
November.”
⊲ UTB: Competition for places
throughout the squad is pretty fierce
to say the least, but none more so
than at the top end of the pitch.
Do you feel all of the strikers offer
something different to the team?
⊲ LM: “In my opinion yes and it’s
down to us as individuals to show
the manager our best form and
allow him the chance to find his best
combinations. It’s not just the strikers,
we have a really talented squad
and there are probably two or three
players who could do a job in every
position, so the manager has options,
good players in all areas, so for
everyone it is about consistently doing
well because if you aren’t at the top of
your game someone else will be trying
to take your spot and that is certainly
going to help drive us forward this
season because nobody can just
expect to play and take their position
for granted.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

UTB 15
⊲ UTB: You enjoyed a memorable
spell of goalscoring in the early
months of our first campaign back
in the Premier League, including
notable goals in victories over
Everton and Arsenal and a strike from
distance against Manchester United.
Are you confident you can rediscover
that kind of form again this term?
⊲ LM: “Those were really special
moments for me personally and I also
remember scoring in draws at West
Ham and Wolves and a goal later in
the season in a win against Tottenham
at Bramall Lane, but after the season
was stopped in March, like the team
I struggled to find any momentum and
obviously last season, starting with
the foot injury I picked up in a friendly
against Preston, I just never really
got fully fit and whenever I got in and
around the squad I seemed to pick up
another knock. But hopefully now I can
stay clear of any more problems, find
some form and momentum, scoring a
good number of goals and contribute
to helping this team get towards the
top of the Championship because
I believe the squad is certainly good
enough to challenge.”
⊲ UTB: The emergence of Iliman
Ndiaye has caught the eye of
everyone inside the club this season.
How impressed have you been with
his performances so far, especially
given his lack of first-team experience
prior to his full debut against
Peterborough United in September?
⊲ LM: “He impressed me towards the
end of last season when he started
training with the main group under
Paul Heckingbottom and I remember
his debut as a substitute at Leicester
City. I’m not sure why he didn’t feature
much in pre-season or in the opening
few games, but he recently signed a
new long-term contract to commit his
future to the club and his talent is clear
to see. Iliman gets the fans excited, he
gets them out of their seat, and he’s
already shown he’ll score goals and
make them for others in the team too.
He has a very bright future ahead and
hopefully he is another player that can
keep improving and help us get much
higher in the table.”
⊲ UTB: What is your early
assessment of the Sky Bet
Championship – given this is
your first taste of the division?
⊲ LM: “The games seem to come
round really fast. In the Premier
League, you play the majority
of the games on weekends
and there aren’t too many
midweek matches, but at this
level you seem to be playing
twice a week all the time and
hopefully that is where we can
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

16 UTB
use the squad we have here. It seems
like the games are very high intensity,
so again you need to be able to make
changes and rotate players because
you are going to pick up injuries and
suspensions and we can do that
without weakening the first 11. There
are a lot of teams you expect to do
well, but it also looks like anyone can
get a result against anyone else on
their day and that makes it fascinating
and really hard to predict.”
⊲ UTB: Earlier this week David Brooks
revealed he had been diagnosed
with Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma.
Having spent a season together at
Bournemouth before your move here,
I’m sure you’d like join everyone at
Sheffield United in wishing him well
ahead his treatment which will begin
shortly?
⊲ LM: “Of course. Brooksy is a great
lad, a year younger than me and
I was really sad when I heard the
UTB 17
news during the week that he was
ill. It will have come totally out of the
blue and will take him some time to
come to terms with it. The year we had
together saw us finish just below mid
table in the Premier League and he is
a real talent. I remember him coming
in during his first season following a
big money move and he hit the ground
running and was a regular in the
squad. I’m sure he’ll fight this like he
has fought to have a successful career
and obviously I’d like to join the Blades
family in wishing him all the best and
hopefully for a speedy recovery.”
⊲ UTB: Finally, if you could offer a
message to the supporters at this
stage of the campaign, what would
it be?
⊲ LM: “I honestly think Blades fans
are the best. They always turn out
in big numbers, home and away and
support the team from the first whistle
to the last. We had some memorable
moments in that first Premier League
season, both at Bramall Lane and on
the road and the fans were a big part
of the success the club has enjoyed
previously. I’m sure they’ll remain right
behind the manager and the players
and hopefully we can give them plenty
of goals and wins to cheer this season
as there is still such a good way to go.”
UNDER-23s UPDATE
United U23s enjoyed a terrific victory
over an experienced Coventry City
side at Bramall Lane.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side looked to be up
against it in the first-half when the Sky Blues
took the lead through Fábio Tavares.
United stuck to the task and gradually grew
into the contest and after Jordan Amissah
made some timely saves before the break,
Heckingbottom’s side drew level just after the
interval.
The Blades earned a penalty which was
dispatched by Zak Brunt after a foul on Ollie
Arblaster. After Kamarl Grant headed a corner
wide, United then took the lead when Angelo
Cappello was denied one-v-one, but Regan
Slater followed up to head in the Blades’
second. It could have been more when a
sublime Slater chip cannoned off the bar as
United recorded a notable win.
The Blades then slipped to defeat against
Burnley in the Premier League Cup and face
Hull City next on Monday.
UTB 25
UNDER-18s UPDATE
United secured a late equaliser in the
recent Professional Development
League Cup tie against Coventry City.
Going deep into stoppage time it looked as
though the Blades were heading for a narrow
defeat, until Billy Blacker rolled in an equaliser
in the 96th minute to level for Derek Geary’s
side. In a goalless first-half, United had some
decent opportunities with Charlie Staniland
and George Dickinson both going close for the
Blades.
Just before the break, Blacker had a
wonderful chance as he nicked the ball past
two defenders, but his effort went just wide.
After the break Coventry took the lead
through an Oliver Berry header, but United
levelled on 67 minutes when Sydie Peck
managed to get a touch on a cross to make it 1-1.
Justin Obikwu restored Coventry’s advantage
with 15 minutes remaining, and it looked good
enough to seal the win until Blacker knocked in
an equaliser after Theo Williams had challenged
the Coventry ‘keeper.
WOMEN’S UPDATE
United Women played in front of a
Championship record attendance at
Bramall Lane, but slipped to defeat in
the clash with Liverpool.
4,100 fans turned up at the Lane to cheer
on Neil Redfearn’s side, but it was a tough
afternoon for the Blades following a 2-0 loss.
The visitors started the better of the two
sides and took the lead when Charlotte
Wardlaw fired a shot beyond Fran Kitching from
the edge of the area.
Lucy Watson saw an effort blocked, and then
had a shot which fired into the side netting as
United went in search of an equaliser.
Liverpool added a second eight minutes
before the break when Leanne Kiernan headed
in a cross from Rachel Furness.
Despite plenty of effort, Liverpool held
out as United’s four match unbeaten run
came to an end.
FUNDRAISING GOALS SMASHED AS
PACES TAKES OVER BRAMALL LANE
Sheffield United has hosted
a night of fundraising and
celebration of the work of
Paces, the leading specialist
centre, charity and school
for individuals with Cerebral
Palsy and motor disorder,
raising an incredible £32,000.
The organisation, based at
Smithy Wood and High Green,
have been a longstanding
partner of the Blades and
are one of their Academy’s
nominated charities. Over
the past year, the charity has
moved its adult services into a
new home and has ambitious
plans to move its school into
Thorncliffe Hall.
On Wednesday (8
September), players, coaches
and club staff were joined by
businesses and organisations
from across Sheffield.
Among the other guests
were superstar fundraisers
10-year old ‘Captain’ Tobias
Weller, who goes to Paces
School, and 19-year old Jack
Mitchell, who is now supported
by Paces Living Adult Services,
for an event hosted by Paces’
patron and Yorkshire legend
Harry Gration MBE.
During the evening, an
auction of football memorabilia
was held, donations made to
support the charity and two
companies have sponsored
rooms at the new home for
Paces School. The total raised
so far, with money still coming
in, is £32,000.
Julie Booth, Head of
Fundraising at Paces, said:
“We were blown away
by the incredible support
shown by businesses from
across Sheffield who were
impressed by Tobias and Jack
who showcase so well the
difference Paces is making to
the lives of children and adults
from across South Yorkshire
and beyond.
“A huge thank you to
everyone who joined us,
donated and continues to
pledge support, and we’re
particularly grateful to
everyone at Sheffield United
for allowing us to host this
event, supporting us to make
it happen and being loyal
partners for everything we do
at Paces.”
VR United’s Dave McCarthy,
Jon Helliwell and Tony Currie
with Tobias and Jack
hand to lend his support
WELL DONE SIMON
Recently in UTB you will have read about
the fundraising exploits of Blades fan
Simon Jenkins.
We reported that Simon was preparing
for this year’s Great North Run in aid of the
Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he
also works.
We’re delighted to report Simon completed
the run in a time of 2 hours 47 minutes
and came 25,854th. At the time of being
contacted, over £850 had also been raised.
Sadly, just before the race Simon learned of
the untimely passing of fellow Blade Stephen
‘Mouse’ Clifton, and whilst this was set to be
a one off, Simon is now considering running
again next year to raise funds for charities
related to Stephen’s sad passing.
UTB 35
Fables & Folklore
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable account of following the Blades
always provides a talking point as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
T C is a Big Knit!
There always seems to have been
some sort of a mascot around in sport,
doesn’t there?
In fact, mascots appear in so many different
places. The first time I heard about one around
the Blades was of the time of the 1925 FA Cup
Final. At some point during the run to Wembley,
a stuffed Felix the Cat (a famous cartoon
character that surfaced in the silent films in
1923) was adopted by the team and appeared
on many photos around the time, clearly
becoming a symbol of good luck for the boys.
Dora Winter, daughter of the great Billy
Cook who lifted the FA Cup twice for the
Blades, remembered it being around when
she was a child. Dora has a great claim to
fame by the way, she was technically there
when we beat Cardiff and also on the steps
of the Town Hall in Sheffield when the team
came back with the trophy for the civic
reception as her mother was eight months
pregnant with her at the time! Tenuous I know,
but I wouldn’t argue with her as it’s a great
story and she is a lovely lady!
She seemed to think that another player,
Tommy Sampy, may have also had possession
of it at some point along with possibly the
great Billy Gillespie. All I know is that, sadly, it’s
never been seen for many years, and I have
definitely never seen it in my time around the
club - shame!
R Blades mascot Tommy Wood
Tommy Wood was possibly the forerunner
of Captain Blade, but a lot thinner and also
without a character outfit! Tommy was born in
1892, a stone’s throw from the ground and was
regularly seen leading the singing at the front of
the Kop and at big games, such as the 1936 FA
Cup Final against Arsenal in his red and white
striped suit with matching hat, rattle and ‘Play
Up Blades’ rosette. You certainly wouldn’t have
been able to miss him, he ran a newsagent near
the ground as well, so it must have helped drum
business up!
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

36 UTB
In more modern times players have certainly
used mascots to try and bring them a little
more luck. The legendary Blades ‘keeper Jack
Smith had an oily old flat cap that he wore from
time-to-time but always threw into the back of
the net in case he needed to shield his eyes
from the sun, as did another legend between
the sticks, Ted Burgin, a short while later. John
Hope started the gonk craze at Bramall Lane
around the time of the great promotion of 1971.
For the younger readers, a gonk was a soft
toy – and they came in different shapes and
sizes. Our first proper club shop, located over
on the corner of John Street, did a roaring trade
on a Sheffield United FC version and I had
one of my very own as a kid - another piece of
tat that I conned my dad out of on my regular
Bramall Lane trips with him as a kid. A match
with me was never a cheap day out, trust me on
that score.
I had it kicking around for years at Mum’s
until one of our west highland terriers either
tried to mate with it in lieu of a cushion or
simply decided that it shouldn’t have been
looking at it in quite that way and tore it limb
from limb. Either way it no longer lives, which
is a bit of a shame as it’s hard to explain
exactly what the thing looked like. Either way,
I suppose that you had to be there. It was like a
cut price womble!
There have been more modern efforts.
I well recall the appearance of Bertie Bassett
around the place when the one and only Harry
became our boss. I would imagine that it was a
marketing managers delight to have a manager
called Bassett come to work in the hometown
of the world-famous Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts.
The character, cunningly constructed from
different colours and flavours of the sweet
was originally designed by a man called Frank
Regan to promote them way back.
Personally, I think liquorice is vile, but Mum
loved it. Her job for years was actually making
it. She was the production manager there,
starting as a girl when she left school in 1939
and staying with Bassetts right through. During
R John’s Bertie Bassett
the war years much of it was converted over
to making food to be sent out to the soldiers
fighting in Europe. Dad always said they killed
more allies than the entire German army!
She also used to talk about the fabled ‘juice
pits’ that were downstairs where several old
men used to have to sit and stir them. This
conjured up some very worrying images as
a kid, I mean A) what did they use to stir the
juice? and B), how did they get them to do it?
Can’t imagine it being fun with no daylight for
endless hours. Mum told me some used to spit
their chewing tobacco into the pits for good
measure. Good grief, and she still ate ‘em?
Things must have been grim during the war!
Thinking about it, she must have had something
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

UTB 37
of a fetish on the stuff, because she used to
buy me liquorice root to chew telling me how
good it was for me. She lied, it was like gnawing
on Long John Silver’s wooden leg and still
tasted awful.
Anyway, there were loads of publicity shots
down at the ground with a giant Bertie Bassett
and Harry down at the Lane for the programme
and other old school media outlets. I have a
feeling that we must have also sold them in the
shop for a time as well. When the famous BBC2
United documentary went on air in 1990, lovely
old Winnie Royston, who lived opposite the
back of the Kop on the Shoreham, was seen
taking one from home to the game, and without
any payment from the manufacturers I would
imagine! Either way, for some reason (and
I certainly didn’t buy one!) we seem to have two
of them in our house, although Mrs. G is only
holding her hands up to one of them!
Now, back to the title of the piece, and why
TC is a big knit.
TC is, without a doubt, one of the greatest
players to pull on the famous shirt of the
Blades, and I doubt very much that statement
would get too many arguments. His plaudits
around the Steel City and in football generally
over the years are legion, a suite named after
him in the ground first that he presides over
pretty well every home game. Then the famous
South Stand that was under construction in the
background when he scored the fabled “quality
goal from a quality player” goal against West
Ham was unveiled as the Tony Currie Stand in
his honour. There is much more, many forget
he was runner up in BBC1’s legendary series
Superstars (I bet he was beaten by Brian Jacks,
as everyone was) and also the famous shot of
he and Birch kissing won loads of accolades
in leading gay mags of the time. I bet you
didn’t know that!
Anyhow, the subject of a biography to be
released just in time for Christmas this year
got an accolade in his United prime and my
childhood that, until a short while ago I had
forgotten completely about. It is a figure lovingly
knitted from wool by the old lady that used to
come in our newsagent shop and sell us her
own orange marmalade that was so bitter it
could suck your cheeks into your head in one
mouthful. Mrs. L was a formidable octogenarian
entrepreneur where Mum was concerned,
and I recall her crocheted tribute to our very
greatest being foisted on Mum for me at a
‘bargain price’. It survived all the westies much
better than the gonk! It used to give me a few
sleepless nights as a kid and got stuffed at the
back of a cupboard for good measure, which
I guess is why its surfaced again when we
moved a few years ago!
I wouldn’t say it was a lifelike offering, far from
it, but I bet TC never knew an old dear from
Frecheville was making knitted models of him
as he tapped the ball past Mervyn Day.
I wonder if he would have got the ‘needle’
or if he would have been in ‘stiches’ over
the thought!
R The knitted model of TC still survives
BLADES STRENGTHEN RANDOX PARTNERSHIP TO THE ACADEMY
United recently announced a further
strengthening of their principal partnership
with Randox.
The healthcare giants have agreed to become
naming right partners of the widely-acclaimed
Sheffield United Academy.
Located at Shirecliffe, it is the base of the
men’s, women’s and academy teams. The
facility, since opening its doors in the early
2000s, has seen the likes of Kyle Walker, Harry
Maguire, David Brooks, Dominic Calvert-Lewin
and Aaron Ramsdale all progress through the
academy ranks.
Established in 1982 in Northern Ireland,
Randox is the largest healthcare diagnostics
company from the UK and Ireland. In 2019
Randox manufactured over four billion tests and
operated in over 145 countries. The company
employs more than 2,500 staff, including more
than 450 research scientists and engineers,
with key facilities located in Co. Antrim and
Co. Donegal.
Randox Managing Director Dr Peter
FitzGerald CBE said: “We are very excited
for the opportunity to extend our partnership
by aligning Randox with the Sheffield United
Academy. With almost 40 years of experience
in the manufacture of world-leading medical
diagnostics and comprehensive health check
and sports science services, Randox is well
positioned to assist in the development of the
health, wellbeing and performance of these
elite athletes. We look forward to working with
the academy and to lending our expertise to
make further developments in cutting-edge
sports science.”
Paul Reeves, the club’s head of commercial,
said: “This is a significant further investment from
Randox and a long-term commitment to our next
generation of players, both male and female.
The academy plays an integral part within the
club, and it goes without question the rising
importance of developing players of all ages to
continue to compete on a global scale. We would
like to thank Dr FitzGerald and his colleagues for
their valued contribution.”
Paul added: “The newly-named Randox Health
Academy has some exciting prospects on the
horizon with the likes of Daniel Jebbison, Femi
Seriki and Iliman Ndiaye all making their Premier
League debuts at the end of the 20/21 season.”
FIRST LAST
This season PAUL HOLLAND picks out a Blade with
a connection to our opponents looking back on their
first and last outing for the red and white wizards...
Carl Asaba had
enjoyed spells with
Brentford, Colchester
(loan), Reading and Gillingham
in the Football League, having
begun his career with Dulwich
Hamlet, before signing for
United in March 2001 for a
nominal £92,500.
With United, the forward
put his name in the history
books after assisting and then
scoring in the 100th Steel City
derby at Hillsborough in a
historic victory. He was part
of the memorable 2002/03
squad that reached the semifinals
of both domestic cup
competitions as well as the
play-off final – a game which
proved to be Carl’s final one in
a Blades shirt.
In August 2003, the forward
left Bramall Lane on a free
transfer, signing for Stoke City
after scoring 24 goals in 80
appearances in S2. He spent
two seasons at the Britannia
Stadium before ending his
career at today’s opposition,
Millwall. Nowadays, Carl
can be heard on BBC Radio
Sheffield and seen on SUTV
Live providing his thoughts on
the current team.
First Game...
Carl Asaba
10/03/2001 vs Nottingham Forest (L1-3)
Asaba made his debut 24-hours after signing for the Blades
which, unfortunately, ended in defeat at home to Nottingham
Forest. The striker played 90 minutes in the game which is
remembered for Georges Santos’ injury after five minutes
when he collided with Andy Johnson. Asaba didn’t go
unnoticed despite the defeat but for the majority of the game
was a lonesome figure in attack. Shaun Murphy had netted
a consolation goal for the hosts. On 78 minutes, United had
missed a golden opportunity in front of goal when Bobby Ford
smashed his spot-kick against the bar after Tony Vaughan had
fouled Asaba in the box.
Last Game...
26/05/2003 vs Wolves (L0-3)
The 2003 Championship Play-
Off Final is a fixture that joins
a long list of major matches
that United supporters would
sooner forget. For Asaba
this was his last match as a
Sheffield United player. Having defeated Nottingham Forest in
the semi-finals, United faced Wolves in the final at the Millennium
Stadium in Cardiff. United found themselves three down at
hat-time via goals from Mark Kennedy, Nathan Blake and Kenny
Miller. Asaba and his strike-partner, Steve Kabba, combined well
in attack but failed to find that killer strike against a solid Wolves
defence. Michael Brown saw his second-half spot-kick saved by
Matt Murray, and, on 74 minutes, Asaba’s day was over when he
was replaced by Wayne Allison.
HE SHOOTS,
HE SCORES…
David Barnes
In every edition of this season’s UTB we got back into the
Blades’ recent history to look back over some of the greatest
goals scored by those in red and white. This week, we
remember a long-range strike from an unlikely source…
Date: 06/10/90 Opposition: Wimbledon Competition: Barclays League Division One Scoreline: 1-2
× BACKGROUND…
Following back-to-back
promotions, United were
finding the going tough on the
return to Division One. Coming
into this home game against
Wimbledon, the Blades had
no wins from seven league
games and only one point and
one place separated Dave
Bassett’s side from basement
club Derby County. Wimbledon
hadn’t had a blistering start
either, and sat just four points
in front of the Blades with just
one win from their opening
seven outings.
× THE GOAL…
After a tentative start to the
game, United took the lead
after 14 minutes at Bramall
Lane. Close season signing
Vinnie Jones would come
back to haunt one of his former
clubs when he launched a long
throw into the Wimbledon area.
The throw was headed clear
from the edge of the six-yard
box but only to the edge of
the penalty area. Waiting for
the ball was Blades full-back
David Barnes who instantly
controlled the ball with his
left and then under pressure
immediately launched a shot
towards goal which flew into
the bottom corner.
Q Manager Dave Bassett
faced his old club
× THE OUTCOME…
With United in front, many
inside Bramall Lane were
crossing their fingers that
victory in the top flight might
have arrived at the eighth time
of asking. They were wrong.
Warren Barton’s corner was
kept alive on the edge of the
area where Detzi Kruszyński
thundered a shot against
the bar, only for Carlton
Fairweather to eventually get
to the loose ball, netting the
rebound with an acrobatic
effort from close range. Dons
striker John Gayle was then
sent off for a second bookable
offence opening the door for
a United win, but the Blades
couldn’t capitalise on the extra
man. It was the 10-men who
won it when sub John Fashanu
drilled a low effort into the
bottom corner from the edge
of the area. United had to wait
another nine games before
finally tasting victory against
Nottingham Forest.
46 UTB
SWAP
SHOP
There have been many player swap deals down the years at Bramall Lane with varying
degrees of success. For each edition of UTB this season we take a look back on some of those
transfers to delve further into the most famous exchange deals in United’s long history…
× THE STORY…
United were struggling near the foot
of the second tier and amid a lengthy
takeover which finally saw Mike
McDonald installed as chairman, longserving
boss Dave Bassett departed
and was replaced by Howard Kendall.
The new boss was handed funds to
try and turn around United’s fortunes
and he wasted no time in taking an
axe to the squad he inherited. Kendall
had already made David White’s loan a
permanent transfer and now he turned
his attention to Notts County full-back
Chris Short. Kendall had managed Short
during his brief tenure as County boss,
and the move was an appealing one for
the defender as it opened the door for
a return to the second tier following the
Magpies’ relegation the previous season.
A fee of just £25,000 was agreed but
it also included midfielder Paul Rogers
who moved in the opposite direction.
× THE PLAYERS…
CHRIS SHORT
to Sheffield United
Short had worked his way up from the
bottom after following his older brother
and future Blade Craig from non-league
Pickering Town to Scarborough and
then onto Notts County in 1990. He
had earned promotion to the top flight
under Neil Warnock and by the time
1987
PAUL ROGERS & £25,000
to Notts County
Chris Short
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

UTB 47
Kendall came calling he had served the
Meadow Lane club for five years. He
made his debut in the FA Cup against
Arsenal and was a regular as United
turned the corner with a strong climax
to the season, finishing ninth.
Rogers had served United well after
leaving non-league Sutton to sign for
the top flight Blades in 1992. His allaction
style made him popular but by
1995 he had turned 30 and Kendall was
keen on freshening up United’s ranks.
Rogers had made 139 appearances
for the Blades and had been a regular
through the early part of the 1995/6
season but the chance to play regularly
again at Meadow Lane was an
attractive one.
× THE OUTCOME…
The deal certainly favoured United in
the short-term as Short, alongside a
whole host of other new faces, was
integral to United’s resurgence under
Kendall. It took time for the new faces
to gel and by March time the Blades
were still deep in trouble. An unbeaten
run of nine games at the end of season,
in which Short played in five, brought
the Blades into a respectable ninth
position. Injuries though began to bite,
and Short was restricted to 22 starts
the following season as United lost the
play-off final to Crystal Palace. He made
just 10 appearances in 1997/98 and
eventually joined Stoke where injuries
continued and eventually ended his
professional career in 2000.
Rogers enjoyed success in the lower
leagues for a number of years before
he retired. He spent less than two
years at Notts County before joining
Wigan where he netted the winning
goal for the Latics as they won the EFL
Trophy in 1999. He also made over
100 appearances for Brighton which
included back-to-back promotions
which saw him briefly once again play in
the second tier at the age of 37.
SECRETS OF THE MUSEUM
Legends of the Lane curator JOHN GARRETT talks through some memorable
artifacts currently residing in the museum at Bramall Lane...
I suppose it’s all
relative to age and
era. Sometimes it will
be the one that reminds you
of success, sometimes the
one that sums the first player
you really loved or maybe just
the first kit that you ever had
bought for you.
Some shirts will always,
however, remain iconic no
matter who the player or
which club. The shirt that
always conjures up those
special images of a time in
the past that is special in
so many ways.
There would be a few
votes from the Blades back
catalogue for sure, but for me,
the shirt pictured here from our
collection is the one that sums
up so much about Sheffield
United FC at its very best.
It’s a round necked, short
sleeved Bukta offering (we
had Bukta pretty much from
around 1923 up to changing to
Umbro in the early part of the
1970s) and it bears the classic
Sheffield city coat of arms.
We never really wore a
shirt badge in the League
until the mid-60s apart from a
brief spell in the early 1890s
for a season. There were
exceptions for the cup finals
of 1925 and 1936 and it came
to an end in the back half of
the 1970s when we needed
to copyright a badge for
commercial purposes and the
council wouldn’t let us!
The number on the back
is 10, which means that,
when the Blades clinched
promotion back to Division
One under John Harris
against Watford on May 1st
1971, this was on the back of
the legendary Tony Currie.
He had two shirts that
day, but the long sleeved
one went missing from the
changing rooms at some
point during the celebrations
afterwards! One piece of
material sums up the era
and one of our greatest ever
sons, also a team that will be
remembered forever for its
flare and quality. Incidentally,
back then all club shirts were
ordered from Jack Archer
1981/82
40th Anniversary
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of United’s Fourth Division title winning season
in 1981/82, UTB trawls through our programme archive to chart the memorable
season through the eyes of the Blades matchday programme of the time. In this
week’s edition we look back over the home programme against Hartlepool, with
United edging up the Division Four table, sitting fifth ahead of this match...
× COMMERCIAL NEWS…
In commercial news, the programme
was also used for a full page to promote
the Money-Spinner Lottery Ticket. With
a first prize of £1,000, agents were
required to sell the tickets with some of
the benefits including free admission to
games if sales exceeded 40 tickets.
× IAN PORTERFIELD…
The manager initially paid tribute to coach and
former player Cec Coldwell who celebrated
his 30-year association with the Blades.
Porterfield also gave mention to the last
home game which saw United defeat Division
One Arsenal in the League Cup. There were
also words for Keith Edwards following a
spectacular goal in the win at Port Vale.
52 UTB
HIGHS, LOWS
& THE UNUSUAL 2003/04
In each edition of UTB this season, DAVE BURKINSHAW looks back on a particular campaign
to seek out the good, bad and the sometimes strange events from the season...
Following the Triple Assault season of
2002/03, hopes had been raised
amongst United supporters that this
new season would be the one when the Blades
finally clinched promotion. Amongst the notable
close season signings were central defender
Chris Morgan, wing-back or midfielder Chris
Armstrong and experienced strikers Jack Lester
and Ashley Ward.
× THE HIGHS…
1. The Blades scored 10 goals in two
consecutive home league games in September
2003. Firstly, they beat South Yorkshire
neighbours Rotherham United 5-0 with both
Peter Ndlovu and Paul Peschisolido scoring
twice. Four days later in an incredible secondhalf
Cardiff City were beaten 5-3. The half-time
score had been 0-0 but the goals certainly
flowed in the second-half with Ndlovu scoring a
hat-trick this time which included two penalties.
2. The Blades’ 2-0 win at one of the promotion
favourites West Bromwich Albion, on 14th
October 2003, showed the rest of the division
that they were going to be serious challengers.
Goals from Michael Tonge and Ashley Ward
gave the Blades this impressive result.
3. The Blades’ six game unbeaten run between
9th December and 17th January showed that
the team was able to be consistent and where
necessary grind out results to earn valuable
points. The run consisted of three wins and
R Paul Peschisolido celebrates scoring
in the 5-0 win over Rotherham
three draws including the thrilling 3-3 home
draw with West Ham United. The game against
the Hammers showed the team’s willingness
to keep battling to the final whistle when they
scored a late equaliser through a Phil Jagielka
header. The game against West Ham also
marked the debut of another new striker, Paul
Shaw, who scored one of the Blades’ goals..
× THE LOWS…
1. A disappointing second half of the season
saw United’s chances of both automatic
promotion and qualification for the play-offs
fade. The team only won two of its last nine
league games with home form especially
poor. The Blades only won one of their last
five games at the Lane with defeats against
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

UTB 53
R Ashley Ward is on target in the win at West Brom
Nottingham Forest and Stoke City being
especially damaging.
2. Whilst cup runs to match the previous
season were unrealistic the manner of the
team’s exit from the FA Cup and League Cup
was disappointing. In the FA Cup the team had
done well to reach the last eight but in a tight,
tense game at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light
the Blades lost 1-0. In the League Cup the
Blades were deservedly beaten 2-0 at home
by Division Two Queens Park Rangers in the
second round.
3. The sale of influential midfielder, Michael
Brown, in December 2003 to Tottenham
Hotspur was a blow. Brown had been a key
player the previous season notching 16 league
goals. Although he had not started this season,
missing games through injury and suspension,
he was nevertheless still a key player and was
difficult to replace. As he was out of contract at
the end of the season the club had no option
but to accept a lower fee than they would have
otherwise required.
× THE UNUSUAL...
1. The first day of the new season, Saturday
9th August 2003, was one of the hottest in
which the Football League had kicked off.
Temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit
were recorded at Luton Town and Bradford
City. The Blades played Gillingham at the
Lane, a game which ended 0-0 as the players
struggled to cope with the heat.
2. Goalkeeper Paddy Kenny was injured in the
40th minute at Crystal Palace on 26th August
2003 and did not return to action until the end
of December. For the remaining 50 minutes
of the Palace game Phil Jagielka went in goal
and did a fine job conceding only one goal, a
penalty, as the team clinched a 2-1 win. After
the Palace game Kenny’s replacement was Paul
Gerrard signed on loan from Everton. Gerrard‘s
loan was time limited and when this temporary
move ended the Blades fielded two ‘keepers
making their debuts in the 3-2 defeat at Burnley.
In the first-half Lee Baxter played but made
errors costing two goals. He was replaced at
half-time by Alan Fettis.
3. The team earned a remarkable 14 penalties
during the course of the league season netting
12 and missing two. There were also five
different players who took the kicks. They were
Michael Brown, Peter Ndlovu, Jack Lester, Andy
Gray and Michael Tonge. Tonge was the only
one of the above who did not score.
× THE VERDICT...
An eighth-place finish two places and two
points outside the play-offs was a very
disappointing outcome after such a promising
start to the season. The team lost impetus in the
second half of the season winning only six of its
final 19 league games.
54 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
Ian Benjamin
AT THE TIME
I WAS WONDERING,
‘WHY AM I HERE’?
As part of our celebration of Black History Month, UTB caught up with IAN
BENJAMIN, United’s first modern-day black footballer, to discuss his experiences,
his time with United and his involvement in a much talked about testimonial...
It is a game which still sparks
great debate over 40 years
since it took place.
It was also a match Ian Benjamin
believes was the beginning of the end of
his Sheffield United career.
West Brom midfielder Len Cantello’s
testimonial game in 1979 grabbed the
headlines as it pitted a team of black
players against a team of white players
– a concept which seems odd and
offensive now in 2021, but back in the
late ‘70s some saw it as progressive,
whilst some didn’t think anything
of it at all.
Albion’s Cyrille Regis picked the team
of black players, and the call went out to
Ian – by then still in the fledgling stages
of his Blades career.
Whilst knowing nothing of the concept
until he arrived in the dressing room,
Ian has to this day always believed
there was also an ulterior motive for
his presence, as just a few weeks later
he was heading for the exit door at
Bramall Lane.
“At the time I was wondering, ‘why am
I here?’,” Ian recently explained to UTB.
“I knew nothing about it being black
players v white players. It was just a
game, and I was asked to play. Before
I went in, Neville Briggs (United’s chief
scout) got me to sign a pro contract with
Sheffield United, that was it, no agents
then, so I was happy my future was
with United.
“I played in the game and then a few
weeks later I was a West Brom player.”
But before we get Ian’s take on the
game, and his experiences as a young
black footballer trying to forge a career
in a time when racism was arguably at
its height, it’s important to learn how he
burst onto the scene at Bramall Lane.
56 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
A player with electric pace, he caught
the eye of the Blades as a 15-yearold
and became one of the youngest
players ever to represent United at
reserve team level. It was clear then, the
Blades had a player on their hands, and
Ian admits he immediately felt at home in
the Steel City.
“I was playing in a cup final for my
school at the City Ground,” explained Ian
who was born in Nottingham.
“After the cup final, Forest’s Peter
Taylor and Ronnie Fenton got me into
a room and asked me to sign for them
but I told them I didn’t want to because
all my brothers were Notts County
fans, and they were threatening to
chuck me in the Trent if I signed! They
both laughed, but then they realised
I wasn’t joking!
“About three weeks later I ended
up signing for United. Jimmy Sirrel
was the manager, and was formerly of
Notts County, so that was how I signed.
I remember going to the ground and
then the house in Nether Edge where
the young players stayed, and I just
got a really good feel for the club,
so I signed.
“I played a couple of reserve games
when I was 15. The first was against
Manchester City and I played against
Colin Bell who was a real favourite of
mine, he was coming back from injury,
so that was an unbelievable feeling.
“I never thought too much about
making it, I was just surprised to have
been called up to play for the reserves.
I just remember it being a really good
experience. My attitude was I just
loved playing football, I wanted to play
all the time.”
Ian was starting to make waves at
Bramall Lane, and it wasn’t long before
he got his first taste of senior action in
August 1978.
Following Alejandro Sabella’s arrival
from River Plate, a friendly between
the two sides was part of the deal. With
Argentina fresh from winning the 1978
World Cup, there was a lot of excitement
surrounding the fixture when the
Argentine giants arrived in Sheffield.
Much to Ian’s delight, he was included
in the senior squad, and eventually
made a first senior appearance in red
and white as a second-half substitute.
“I think I was 16, I was sitting on the
bench and was just thinking ‘wow’,”
revealed Ian, who would also represent
England at youth level.
“They had six players who had just
played for Argentina in the World Cup
- the likes of Daniel Passarella, Luque
was playing up front and one or two
others. I was just delighted to be in the
squad, then Harry Haslam put me on
his time with
R Ian pictured
on United’s
team photo
from 1978/79
for the last 20 minutes of the game. It
was just a blur to be honest, I think I had
a few touches, but I was just excited
to be involved. I remember passing it
to Alan Woodward a few times, so it
was a brilliant experience in front of
about 20,000 fans – although quite
nerve wracking!”
Ian would be a regular for United’s
reserves, and after continually
impressing, a competitive debut
presented itself in April 1979.
He may not have thought too much
about it at the time, but when Ian came
off the bench at Ninian Park as United
faced Cardiff City, he would become a
trailblazer as the first modern day black
footballer to play for the Blades’ senior
team. Of course, Arthur Wharton is the
first black player to represent the Blades
way back in the 1890s.
Whilst it was a huge achievement to
make the senior squad at such a young
age, it wasn’t quite the debut Ian was
looking for, as a struggling United lost
4-0 in Wales.
“I think there was an expectation
that I would be the first of this particular
group of players to come through,” said
Ian, who was knocking on the door of
a side which was struggling to keep its
place in the second tier.
“In the end, I was one of the last
because Phil Jones and Paul Casey had
already played. I was due to make my
debut at Burnley but when we got to
Turf Moor, the rain was relentless, and
the pitch was heavy, and Harry Haslam
decided to pull me out. I had to wait but
I’d played in the reserves all season and
was enjoying playing for United.
“Bruce Rioch - what a wonderful bloke
- he spoke to me all the way there - for
four hours. He gave me great advice; he
was so patient with me.
“The game itself, well, I always joke
with people that I changed the game!
It was 0-0 at half-time and someone
came off injured. I came on for my debut
in midfield alongside Bruce who was
on loan from Derby, and they had a
midfielder called John Buchanan who
scored a couple from 30 yards, and we
were well beaten. I don’t remember
too much, but I remember thinking that
I did okay.”
United’s relegation to the Third
Division looked unavoidable by the
time the Blades geared up for the final
game of the 1978/79 season against
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

58 UTB
FORMER PLAYER
Leicester City at Bramall Lane. Ian
enjoyed a special full debut by netting
twice in a 2-2 draw, but perhaps the
experience was a little bittersweet with
relegation confirmed.
“John Matthews was supposed to take
the penalties, but they said if John didn’t
want to do it, who would step forward,”
recalls Ian, who would be a regular at
the start of the following campaign.
“I think Tony Kenworthy nominated
me, and I was happy to take it when
John wasn’t keen. I think we needed
something ridiculous like a 9-0 win to
stay up. I took the penalty and scored.
I’m pretty sure we had another one in
the last five minutes, and I scored that
as well, so I was happy from a personal
perspective.”
Playing for United may have brought
great joy to Ian, but he was having to
ply his trade whilst also listening and
receiving racial abuse, which blighted
the game back in the late ‘70s and well
into the ‘80s.
Ian reveals that the abuse was
something he, and others, had to deal
with and sadly in 2021 it’s an issue
which is still prevalent with England’s
recent games against Hungary a prime
example of how much more work is
still to be done.
“Most away games I would get some
form of racist abuse and I won’t repeat
the words,” remarked Ian, who is still
involved in the game today, scouting
most recently for Northampton Town.
“Invariably it would happen, and
I had one or two problems with my
own teammates at that time as well.
Back then, I just had to stand up for
myself. Mostly it inspired me to play
better, whenever I received some
abuse, it would spur me on to do better.
It happened and it was tough. It was
really strange for me because I came
out of Nottingham in a school which
was 48% black people. When I arrived
in Sheffield, I hardly saw any black
people at all. I have to say though that
I was well looked after at the club, and
treated well.
“I think back when I played, a lot of
the abuse was trying to put you off
your game. Now I just feel it is a lot
more cutting. Yes, we were targeted
in my day, but I just felt, not that it was
right obviously, that it was designed to
put you off. You would get applauded
as you came off the pitch at the end.
I am surprised that I am saying this, but
I really think it’s more cutting now, and
I do believe it is probably worse which is
really sad.”
With Ian starting the 1979/80
campaign in United’s first 11, it didn’t take
long before other clubs began to notice
the progression of the teenager.
Despite interest from elsewhere, Ian
revealed he was happy at United and
leaving the club was the furthest thing
from his mind until boss Harry Haslam
asked for a meeting in late August 1979.
“BACK THEN, I JUST HAD TO STAND UP FOR
MYSELF. MOSTLY IT INSPIRED ME TO PLAY
BETTER, WHENEVER I RECEIVED SOME ABUSE,
IT WOULD SPUR ME ON TO DO BETTER.
IT HAPPENED AND IT WAS TOUGH”
“I met Harry Haslam and he
explained that Alex Sabella had turned
down a move to Sunderland and the
club needed money,” remembers
Ian, now 59.
“They had accepted an offer from
West Brom. I was gutted to be honest,
I asked if I had to go, and I was sort
of told yes in a roundabout way. I was
really happy at Sheffield United; I would
have spent the rest of my career here if
I could. That’s how I felt at that time.
R Cyrille
Regis’s
team for Len
Cantello’s
testimonial.
Ian pictured
back row, first
on the left
“It was £138,000 and at that time
it was the highest fee paid for a
teenager. I think two or three weeks
later Steve MacKenzie went from Palace
to Manchester City for £250,000
and beat it.”
But how much did Ian’s presence in
the now much talked about testimonial
at The Hawthorns have on his arrival at
West Brom? And, looking back now on
the game and the idea behind it, what
did he think at the time?
“I walked into the dressing room
and there was Cyrille Regis, Lawrie
Cunningham, Brendan Batson, Garth
Crooks etc,” Ian, who went on to play for
the likes of Peterborough, Northampton
and Southend, said.
“I saw everyone was black, I hadn’t
been told what it was all about. It was
then explained to me, but the attitude of
everyone in that room was we wanted
firstly to make it a good evening for Len,
but also, we wanted to win the game and
that’s all I thought about it at that time.
We just thought, lets win the game which
we did. I was surprised how it turned out,
because I don’t think any of us realised
how big it would become and that we
would be talking about it now.
“In terms of my involvement, looking
back now, I think it was an opportunity
for Ron Atkinson (West Brom manager)
to take another look at me because
a few months later I was a West Brom
player. There must have been something
like that in it. I was only a young lad, so
I think there was something else to it and
I believe Ron wanted someone to get
me involved in that game so he could
have a close look.
“Leaving United was tough, I really
loved my time in Sheffield, and I would
have loved to have played more games,
but that’s football.
“I really enjoyed my career, and I’m
still involved in the game. I’ve always
stuck to my principles, and I think that’s
why I’ve stayed involved so long, it’s
been great.”
This week it is the turn of JOHN EGAN to look back on some career highlights...
WALSALL 3-2 BLADES
Date: 06/03/2012
Competition: League One
John says: “I remember this day well.
It was a right rush to get down from
Sunderland to play. I hadn’t even met
the lads. I jumped onto the bus to go
to the game and just played. I think
Ched Evans scored twice. We were in
control but ended up losing the game
3-2. It was disappointing, but it was
great to play for United. It looked like
twice in a 2-0 win. This image
brings back really good memories
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND 0-1 ICELAND
Date: 28/03/2017
Competition: International Friendly
John says: “This was my debut
for Ireland, but I suppose it was a
bittersweet game for me. Whenever you
make your debut for your country, you
are always thrilled, it is such an honour.
You can see in this image; I got a cut on
my head after about two minutes! We
lost the game so that was disappointing,
but I was happy to make my debut.”
BLADES 2-1 NORWICH CITY
Date: 18/08/2018
Competition: Championship
John says: “This I remember well.
It is Norwich at home, and it was a
really good day. I feel like we turned
the corner around this time against
a really good side in Norwich. I got
the first goal in a 2-1 win, and this
But this is right up there. Getting
only the Kop was full!”
FOUNDATION CELEBRATE
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
To celebrate Black History
Month, Sheffield United
Community Foundation
would like to shine a light on
our community health coach,
Dave Kavanagh.
This year’s theme for Black
History Month is ‘Proud to be’
and focuses on celebrating
being black or brown and
inspiring and sharing the
pride people have in their
heritage and culture – in their
own way, in their own words.
Dave is of mixed heritage
– Irish, English and Afro-
Caribbean and has been
working for the participation
& inclusion strand of the
Foundation since 2019 and
helps deliver sessions for Joy
of Moving, United in Health
and Football Camps.
Black History Month
On why Black History Month
is important to Dave, he
said: “It is an opportunity to
celebrate and tell the true
history of black people and
African/ Afro-Caribbean
heritage. It is important as
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

UTB 65
many people have a poor understanding of
black heritage.
“Many think that it started and ended with
slavery, which is so wrong! We have had many
great civilisations and empires as well as
political leaders, inventors and much more.”
Proud to Be
On this year’s Black History Month theme of
‘Proud to be’, Dave said: “I am proud of my black
heritage because we have an incredible identity
and culture. We have amazing food, music and
a history that deserves to be celebrated and
taught to others!”
Barriers
Dave has faced many barriers from being black,
such as challenges in the workplace and having
judgements made about himself in public.
To help overcome these challenges,
Dave tries to challenge people’s logic and
educate them.
These barriers give Dave the motivation to
work harder and prove that he is capable.
“I am proud of building relationships with
participants to encourage a healthy lifestyle!”
“I try to be a good person in society and
respect others,” says Dave.
Role Models
There are many black role models that people
can look up to and celebrate. On his own role
models, Dave said: “Dr Martin Luther King Jr is
someone who I truly admire and look up to.
“He taught us that we can win over hate, but
we must be an example of peace and lead by
example and that’s an amazing thing.”
“To judge a person on the contents of their
character and not the colour of one’s skin.
If we all did this the world would be a far
better place.”
FOUNDATION CONFIRMS
INVOLVEMENT IN
EXPANDED TALENT
INCLUSION PROGRAMME
Sheffield United Community
Foundation are delighted to
announce our involvement in the
newly expanded Talent Inclusion
Programme with the FA and
33 other EFL Club Community
Organisations (CCO).
The Talent Inclusion Programme
ensures that through our existing
community activities, female
participants can be identified and
referred to the FA England Women’s
Talent Pathway. Social class, ethnicity
and demographics should not be a
barrier to success.
For girls showing potential, the
programme creates a pathway from
community to full England honours,
with an educated workforce that
identifies and supports potential.
We will be supported by an
education and learning programme
managed by the EFL Trust and
supported by The FA.
Rob Jenkinson, United’s
participation & inclusion officer, said:
“We are delighted to be a part of
Talent Inclusion Programme and think
it is a fantastic initiative. Anything
we can do to help get more talented
girls recognised and identified for
their footballing abilities is a step in
the right direction for the women and
girl’s game.”
The longer-term aspiration of the
programme is for all English EFL
clubs to engage.
Rainbow Blades
member Katy
Lovell explains
what it means
to be part
of the group…
Although I
identify as
pansexual, I’m
married to a
man, which
made me
worried I wasn’t
gay enough to join Rainbow Blades! There
was a sense of apprehension as I filled out the
online form, but most of all I was determined
– I wanted the group to be a goer. Even if it
wasn’t for me, LGBTQ+ people are everywhere
in football, even if people are not publicly
out. Joining Rainbow Blades was a quiet act
of solidarity.
I received a membership badge and monthly
newsletters popped up in my inbox. There
was never pressure to attend events, just a
warm welcome from James and the rest of the
committee. As time went on, it became clear
Rainbow Blades was for me (and I was quite
gay enough, although that wasn’t a stipulation
– allies help strengthen the voice of minorities)
and I’ve become more involved, including
meeting fellow members at social events.
Rainbow Blades has reignited my love for
United and given me some amazing new
friends. If you’ve been thinking of joining, I
highly recommend it.
SENIOR BLADES
An update on the Senior Blades…
On Thursday 16th September the
Senior Blades trip to Skegness finally
departed Cherry Street after a delay
of 16 months!
Although the numbers had been
depleted from the original bookings,
the day went very well. Sunshine was
the order of the day and everyone
had a really good time from a lovely
walk along the beach, a round of pitch
and put, a stroll along the prom with
coffee breaks and ice creams and of
course the obligatory seaside fare of
a delicious fish and chip tea to finish
off a good day out.
Big thanks go to our excursions
organiser, Sue Foster, who
unfortunately was unable to join us
on the day, for all her hard work in
ensuring everyone who went had
a really enjoyable day. We are all
looking forward to next year’s trip
and we’ve heard a whisper of the
proposed destination, it sounds like it
could be a really scrumptious day?
TRANSFER
TRAIL
In every edition of UTB this season, DAVE BURKINSHAW looks
back on a significant transfer involving the Blades...
A MASSIVE NEW RECORD FEE FOR A BRITISH PLAYER AS
THE BLADES CONTINUE TO SEEK BARGAINS (1956-59)
The British game was shocked
by Leeds United’s sale of their
star player, Welsh international
John Charles, to Juventus in April 1957
for a fee £65,000 - almost double the
previous highest fee paid. It was clear
that the British game was facing new
threats from Italian clubs especially
when it came to poaching the best
talent. They were prepared to pay
higher fees and wages. The maximum
player wage still remained in place in
the Football League.
The sad news of the death of
United’s manager Reg Freeman in 1955
overshadowed the start of the 1955/56
season. In his place the inexperienced
former Everton, Arsenal and England
player, Joe Mercer, was appointed.
The club was relegated from the top
flight at the end of Mercer’s first season
in charge. Along the way United looked
to shop sensibly in the transfer market.
Two players signed prior to the start of
the 1955/56 season were full-back Cliff
Mason from Darlington for £6500 and
Scotsman Bobby Howitt from Partick
Thistle for £8000. Both gave some
good service to the Blades although
neither were sure of a regular first team
place.
Whilst Mercer was in charge some
young players developed well and
became key players. Amongst them R ‘Doc’ Pace signed in 1957
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

UTB 69
were goalkeeper Alan Hodgkinson,
full-back Graham Shaw, winger Colin
Grainger and half-back Jim Iley.
Grainger with his speed, accurate
crossing and powerful shooting won
England caps whilst with the Blades,
memorably scoring twice on his debut
against Brazil. Following United’s
relegation, it seemed inevitable that
a top flight club would want to sign
him. He was sold to Sunderland in
February 1957 for a United record
fee of approximately £17,000 plus
Sunderland’s Sammy Kemp.
South Kirby-born Jim Iley thrived
under the management of Mercer and
became an established member of
the first team. He was a strong tackler
and could shoot powerfully. He also
attracted the interest of the national
selectors and other clubs earning
selection for the Football League
against the Irish League. With United
needing money for new floodlights, Jim
was sold in August 1957 to Tottenham
Hotspur for a fee of £16,000.
R Colin
Grainger
and Jim Iley
were two of
a number of
players who
came through
the ranks
As Mercer grew into the
management role, he made some
fine signings for bargain fees as well
as probably making his worst signing
whilst Blades’ boss. The players
whom Mercer signed who proved
to be vital players for the next few
seasons were:
1. Half-back Gerry Summers signed
for £3,000 from West Bromwich Albion.
Gerry went on to play 260 league
games for the club and was a key
player when the club returned to the
top flight in 1961.
2. Inside forward or winger Billy
Hodgson signed from St Johnstone for
£3,250. He played 152 league games
and scored 32 goals for the club.
3. Centre forward Derek ‘Doc’ Pace,
signed from Aston Villa for £12,000
on Boxing Day 1957. He scored on
his debut on the same day he signed.
He proved to be arguably Mercer’s
finest ever signing for the Blades as
he scored 140 goals in 253 league
appearances for the club.
4. Left winger Ronnie Simpson,
signed from Huddersfield Town in May
1958 for a fee of £6,000 plus United’s
Derek Hawksworth. This was one
of United’s biggest deals. Although
slow to settle Ronnie became a key
maker of goals for Pace with his
speed, trickery and crossing. He also
possessed a powerful shot and scored
some spectacular goals. He played
203 league games for United scoring
44 goals.
Finally, arguably Mercer’s worst
mistake was trying to replace club
legend Joe Shaw. Believing the team
needed a more traditional big central
defender, the experienced Malcolm
Barrass was signed from Bolton
Wanderers in September 1956 for
£4,160. It was soon clear that Barrass
was past his best and Joe Shaw was
restored to centre half where he was to
remain until his retirement in 1966.
UTB 71
INTRODUCTION...
Millwall have offered up
some real signs of optimism
in the first couple of months
of the Championship season
and now they are seeking to
build on the platform they
have created.
Back-to-back wins against
Bristol City and Barnsley ahead
of last week’s international
break gave Gary Rowett’s side
a real boost as they started to
turn draws into wins.
The Lions now find
themselves in a position where
their season could turn in
either direction, with Rowett
and his players determined
to be looking up at the teams
ahead of them as they aim to
secure a second away win of
this Championship season at
Bramall Lane tonight.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

72 UTB
MANAGER...
GARY ROWETT
He marked his 100th game in charge of
Millwall earlier this month, but Gary Rowett
believes he is only just getting started
as Lions boss.
This former Burton, Birmingham, Derby and
Stoke manager is relishing the challenge he
has taken on in south London, with 47-yearold
Rowett convinced his Millwall side are on
an upward curve as they look to add winning
consistency to their promise.
“We have got ourselves into great positions
in a lot of matches this season, but we haven’t
always converted those positions into wins,”
says the coach who has overseen 438 games in
a management career that started in 2012.
“We want to play forward with quality, pace
and precision and there is more to come from
us. We’ve got to be ambitious. We want to
be ambitious.
“We’ve always said that we want to be a team
and a club that can sustain that top half of the
table challenge, which as we know is a tough,
tough challenge with a lot of the teams in there.
“We need all of our players available; we
need a little bit of good fortune with injuries,
and we need to click a bit in that final third and
if we do we will have a very good chance in and
around those areas.
“The aim is to be as competitive as we can,
we want to be proud of the team, we want to
do as well as we can, our aim is of course to be
pushing for that top 10.”
Rowett’s extensive experience in the dug-out
should be a big asset for Millwall as they look
to sustain a push for a top six finish, with this
former Birmingham and Derby defender now
embraced into the fabric of the club he has led
since October 2019.
Much of Rowett’s time in charge was spent
without the club’s vocal fans backing his side
and he believes their presence this season can
be crucial to the Lions’ ambitions.
“I’m aware that to get longevity at any club is
a massive challenge,” he added. “There is that
thirst in modern day football for success, so
to get to 100 games at a club like Millwall is a
proud moment and shows a relative amount of
success in what we’re trying to do.
“It feels a little bit like we’re just starting and
that is a good thing because two years in a job,
with all sorts of challenges, can feel a lot longer
than two years. There is a real chance to build
something here, which I’ve always wanted to
do. Let’s see how it goes.
“I’m mindful that this is the Championship you
can lose the next seven and be out. It keeps
you on your toes.”
With stability off the field at Millwall backed
up by the presence of Rowett on the touchline,
the travelling fans arriving at Bramall Lane
tonight have every reason to feel optimistic
after their long trip from London.
UTB 73
Greatest Day
FA CUP SEMI-FINAL
MILLWALL 1-0 SUNDERLAND
Saturday 4th April 2004
As Millwall set out on their
FA Cup adventure in January
2004, few would have
imagined that their journey
would end in the final in May.
A tight 2-1 victory in a third
round tie against Walsall
at The Den was an unlikely
platform for a run that will
forever be remembered
by Millwall fans, with wins
against Telford, Burnley and
Tranmere setting up a golden
opportunity to seal a place in
the club’s first FA Cup final as
Sunderland lay in wait in an
Old Trafford semi-final.
This felt like a once-in-alifetime
moment for Millwall
and as a result, the pressure
on player/manager Dennis
Wise and his players could not
have been more acute.
Yet a famous winner from
Tim Cahill sent the Lions into
the final, as the Aussie calmly
fired home the loose ball
after Paul Ifill’s 26th-minute
shot was parried by the
Sunderland ‘keeper.
“That’s why you play
football, for moments like
that,” recalls Cahill. “We knew
we might never get a chance
like that to win a semi-final
and create a special moment
for Millwall.
“We knew what it meant to
the fans, and we also knew
it might not happen again,
so we needed to take the
opportunity. Thankfully we did
it. That was our final in many
ways because it was always
going to be tough against a
strong Manchester United side
in the final.”
Sir Alex Ferguson’s
Manchester United duly won
the final 3-0 as Cristiano
Ronaldo took centre stage, but
Millwall still had their moment
of glory in the biggest game in
English football.
× THE STORY: United come from behind to defeat Stoke City in a pulsating contest at Bramall Lane.
The Blades missed opportunities in a positive first-half showing, and then fell behind to a Jacob
Brown strike on 55 minutes. With the game seemingly getting away from United, sub Lys Mousset
finished a quality move to level, and just three minutes later fellow sub David McGoldrick netted
to bag all three points.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
FORGOTTEN GROUNDS
T he Old Den
Opened: 1909 Closed: 1993
Each week UTB looks back over a stadium from the past to
discover United’s first, last and most memorable performance...
× THE GROUND…
Millwall moved into The Den
in 1910 and famed stadium
architect Archibald Leitch was
the man charged with the
stadium’s design. The Den
largely consisted of grass
banking in the early days, but
eventually the terraces were
concreted, taking capacity to
an estimated 40,000. After
some gradual improvements
over the years, the ground
suffered during WWII when
susceptible to air raids due
to the nearby docks. In 1943
a German bomb hit the North
Terrace and a week later a
fire destroyed the Main Stand.
Millwall were homeless for a
time as renovation took place,
work which was undertaken
mainly by fans. In 1948 a new
Main Stand was constructed,
and this was the only part of
the stadium with seats and
fully covered. Few alterations
R The scene in August 1976
were made in the following
years, and even as early
as the ‘70s the club were
considering a new stadium.
The plan proved unpopular
with supporters and the club
failed to raise the necessary
funds. Minor improvements,
mainly in terms of facilities,
were made in the ‘80s but the
stadium looked inadequate to
handle the increased crowds
later in the decade as Millwall
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MILLWALL

UTB 91
hosted top flight football.
Following the Taylor Report,
plans to make The Den allseated
were quickly shelved
for a new stadium at nearby
Senegal Fields. The final
game at the old stadium was
played in May 1993.
× FIRST UNITED VISIT…
United made a first visit to The
Den as early as February 1914
for an FA Cup tie. The Blades
comfortably won 4-0 with
goals from George Utley (2),
Billy Gillespie and Joe Kitchen.
United made a first league visit
in 1939 losing 4-0.
× LAST UNITED VISIT…
With United in the Premier
League at the time of the
closure of the old ground, the
Blades’ final visit to the Old
Den was back in December
1987. Millwall won this second
tier clash 3-1 with Clive
Mendonca scoring for United.
R Fans look on in January 1989
R The Den being demolished in July 1993
Millwall won the league and
promotion to the top flight
whilst United were relegated.
× MEMORABLE GAME…
There were few high points
for United during the 1980/81
season, a campaign which
would eventually end in
relegation to the old Fourth
Division. In October and
early November, the Blades
did manage a five-game
unbeaten run which included
four wins. One of those was a
4-1 success at The Den with
goals from Steve Charles, John
Ryan, Steve Neville and an
own goal.
× WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…
The old stadium site was sold
to Fairview Homes in 1991
for £6.5m although Millwall
continued to play at the old
stadium for another 18 months
until construction of the New
Den was complete in 1993.
The old ground was then
quickly demolished and is
now a housing estate. The
New Den was the first new
all-seated stadium to be built
following the publication of
the Taylor Report.
Stats All Folks
Blades statistician ANDREW KIRKHAM delves into the archives to enlighten Unitedites with topical figures…
THREE DIFFERENT KEEPERS IN A ROW
As was mentioned in a previous programme not only have we used four different goalkeepers
so far this season but we used three different ‘keepers in successive league games. This is the
eighth time this has occurred and on two further occasions three ‘keepers have been used in two
successive games. The first time was in 1933/34 but most have been more recent. You may try to
remember who the ‘keepers were in 1979/80, 1984/85, 1998/99, 2003/04, 2009/10 and 2017/18…
THREE IN THREE GAMES:
1933/34: Harry Wilkes, Jack Smith, Jack Kendall
1934/35: Harry Wilkes, Michael McCarthy, Roy John
1949/50: Ted Burgin, Fred White, Jack Smith
1979/80: Steve Conroy, Neil Ramsbottom, Derek Richardson
1984/85: Keith Waugh, Paul Tomlinson, John Burridge
1998/99: Andy Goram, Alan Kelly, Simon Tracey
2009/10: Ian Bennett, Mark Bunn, Carl Ikeme
2021/22: Aaron Ramsdale, Michael Verrips, Wes Foderingham
THREE IN TWO GAMES:
2003/04: Paul Gerrard, Lee Baxter, Alan Fettis
2017/18: Simon Moore, Jake Eastwood and Jamal Blackman
In 2003/04 Alan Fettis
replaced Lee Baxter at half
time (both making their club
debuts). Paul Gerrard played
in the previous game. In
2017/18 Jake Eastwood
replaced red-carded Simon
Moore. Jamal Blackman
played in the following game.
HOW MANY KEEPERS
Robin Olsen is the 81st player to keep goal for the Blades in
league games (ignoring the 21 outfield players who played in
goal for an injured or red-carded ‘keeper). 12 of those have
made just one appearance, seven since 1978 – how many can
you name?
George Waller 1893/94 2-0 A Manchester Utd
Arthur Wharton 1894/95 0-2 A Sunderland
Mark Mellors 1907/08 2-2 H Arsenal
George Turnbull 1927/28 1-3 A Leicester City
Alf Ashmore 1957/58 0-2 H Leyton Orient
Nicky Johns 1978/79 3-2 H Sunderland
Mervyn Day 1991/92 0-3 A Wimbledon
Gary Kelly 2002/03 0-2 A Watford
Lee Baxter 2003/04 2-3 A Burnley
Phil Barnes 2004/05 1-0 H Rotherham United
Jake Eastwood 2017/18 0-3 A Wolves
Michael Verrips 2021/22 0-4 A West Brom
R Gary Kelly playing for United
against Watford in 2003
NOTES: George Waller was an outfield player but started the game as no regular ‘keepers were available. Mervy Day saved a
penalty. Lee Baxter played only the first half but conceded all three goals. Sub Jake Eastwood conceded only one of the three
goals. Carl Muggleton made a brief outfield sub appearance at Reading in May 1996
