MANAGER’S NOTES
“Nothing is won in mid-October, there’s still plenty of points to play for between
now and May next year, but I’d like us to start putting pressure on the top clubs
to let them know that Sheffield United are a major force in this division”
Like every Blades fan, I enjoyed
Saturday’s victory and the manner in
which we fought back to collect the
points – if we can match or better that display
tonight, I will be very pleased.
It may have taken two late goals, but I think
we deserved to beat Stoke City, our overall
performance was nice to watch and be part of.
We had a good opening 45 minutes and
created more than the opposition, we moved
the ball well and they had to defend well for long
periods. In the second half they scored a goal
which was too easy, and we must do better in
those situations. The goal produced a flat period
when maybe they got on top, we didn’t react
correctly in a physical or a mental sense, but we
made changes and it was crucial in us turning
the result around. We finished excellently and
could have scored more goals, but we must be
satisfied with the three points.
After the game, there was a lot of talk about
the substitutes and the impact that they had
but it is part of my job to make these decisions
and it emphasises that we have a quality squad.
On Saturday it was the turn of McGoldrick and
Mousset to take the headlines, but it could so
easily be McBurnie or Brewster in the next few
games because all of the squad bring qualities
that we need to win matches.
Generally, when reflecting, I thought that
it was a huge boost for everyone, it was
psychologically very important as the club has
endured some tough times in recent months.
It could prove to be an important win against a
very good team in the Championship.
We quickly move onto the next challenge and
the prize remains the same, a win and points.
We offer a very warm welcome to everyone from
Millwall who has made the trip to tonight’s game.
I make no excuses for emphasising the
point that we are following the process, trying
to improve game by game. We know the final
target of everyone connected to the club, but
it won’t be achieved today, gradually I think we
are moving in the right direction; the focus is
always on the next opposition and trying to build
up our total.
The Championship is unpredictable, and
games are usually very close, we paid the price
for not being as clinical as we could earlier in the
season, but we have worked hard defensively
and offensively on the training ground, we
always want to improve our positional play and
shape, specific to our play in any given game.
