There have been many player swap deals down the years at Bramall Lane with varying
degrees of success. For each edition of UTB this season we take a look back on some of those
transfers to delve further into the most famous exchange deals in United’s long history…
× THE STORY…
United were struggling near the foot
of the second tier and amid a lengthy
takeover which finally saw Mike
McDonald installed as chairman, longserving
boss Dave Bassett departed
and was replaced by Howard Kendall.
The new boss was handed funds to
try and turn around United’s fortunes
and he wasted no time in taking an
axe to the squad he inherited. Kendall
had already made David White’s loan a
permanent transfer and now he turned
his attention to Notts County full-back
Chris Short. Kendall had managed Short
during his brief tenure as County boss,
and the move was an appealing one for
the defender as it opened the door for
a return to the second tier following the
Magpies’ relegation the previous season.
A fee of just £25,000 was agreed but
it also included midfielder Paul Rogers
who moved in the opposite direction.
× THE PLAYERS…
CHRIS SHORT
to Sheffield United
Short had worked his way up from the
bottom after following his older brother
and future Blade Craig from non-league
Pickering Town to Scarborough and
then onto Notts County in 1990. He
had earned promotion to the top flight
under Neil Warnock and by the time
1987
