Following the Taylor Report,
plans to make The Den allseated
were quickly shelved
for a new stadium at nearby
Senegal Fields. The final
game at the old stadium was
played in May 1993.
× FIRST UNITED VISIT…
United made a first visit to The
Den as early as February 1914
for an FA Cup tie. The Blades
comfortably won 4-0 with
goals from George Utley (2),
Billy Gillespie and Joe Kitchen.
United made a first league visit
in 1939 losing 4-0.
× LAST UNITED VISIT…
With United in the Premier
League at the time of the
closure of the old ground, the
Blades’ final visit to the Old
Den was back in December
1987. Millwall won this second
tier clash 3-1 with Clive
Mendonca scoring for United.

Millwall won the league and
promotion to the top flight
whilst United were relegated.
× MEMORABLE GAME…
There were few high points
for United during the 1980/81
season, a campaign which
would eventually end in
relegation to the old Fourth
Division. In October and
early November, the Blades
did manage a five-game
unbeaten run which included
four wins. One of those was a
4-1 success at The Den with
goals from Steve Charles, John
Ryan, Steve Neville and an
own goal.
× WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…
The old stadium site was sold
to Fairview Homes in 1991
for £6.5m although Millwall
continued to play at the old
stadium for another 18 months
until construction of the New
Den was complete in 1993.
The old ground was then
quickly demolished and is
now a housing estate. The
New Den was the first new
all-seated stadium to be built
following the publication of
the Taylor Report.
