David
McGoldrick says his
late winner against Stoke
ranks high amongst some of
his many special moments at
Bramall Lane.
Brought off the bench by
boss Slaviša Jokanović with
United trailing to the Potters,
the former Republic of Ireland
international was instrumental
in Lys Mousset’s equaliser with
10 minutes remaining, before
he netted the winner after a
low cross by Enda Stevens.
The striker, who has
achieved plenty in red and
white down the years, admits
his impressive cameo was
high on his favourite list as
United returned from the
international break to snatch
maximum points.
“It’s right up there,” he
said of the goal in front of
a packed Kop.
“It’s great to come on and
influence the game and get
my first goal of the season.
I’ve been out of the team
for a time with injuries and
I didn’t come on in the last
game, so I’ve had to grit my
teeth and really work hard
to get back in. I knew I had
to come on and make an
impression for the lads, and
I am just delighted.
“For the first goal, I got
played a pass by Ben (Davies),
and I could see the defender
charging up, so I know Sharpy
R David enjoys the moment after netting the winner against Stoke
plays off my movement, so
I flicked it around the corner.
He’s got it and with his quality
he’s played it back to me
and I’ve seen Moose in the
area, so the ball went to him,
and he finished well. It was a
great team goal.
“The second one, well
I know Enda Stevens’ quality
because I’ve played with
him for years. He’s found me
in the area, I’ve got a good
connection on it, it has taken a
deflection and gone in. It was
such a great feeling.”
Coming back from an
injury, the 33-year-old knows
competition is fierce for
a starting berth, but he’s
ready for the fight as he
seeks more game time in the
coming weeks.
He remarked: “It was great
to have two weeks of training
under my belt to get my fitness
up. I am ready to fight for my
place, the quality that we have
got in the front line is as good
as it has been for years. I’ll
have to fight to play but I am
chomping at the bit.”
