Rainbow Blades
member Katy
Lovell explains
what it means
to be part
of the group…
Although I
identify as
pansexual, I’m
married to a
man, which
made me
worried I wasn’t
gay enough to join Rainbow Blades! There
was a sense of apprehension as I filled out the
online form, but most of all I was determined
– I wanted the group to be a goer. Even if it
wasn’t for me, LGBTQ+ people are everywhere
in football, even if people are not publicly
out. Joining Rainbow Blades was a quiet act
of solidarity.
I received a membership badge and monthly
newsletters popped up in my inbox. There
was never pressure to attend events, just a
warm welcome from James and the rest of the
committee. As time went on, it became clear
Rainbow Blades was for me (and I was quite
gay enough, although that wasn’t a stipulation
– allies help strengthen the voice of minorities)
and I’ve become more involved, including
meeting fellow members at social events.
Rainbow Blades has reignited my love for
United and given me some amazing new
friends. If you’ve been thinking of joining, I
highly recommend it.
SENIOR BLADES
An update on the Senior Blades…
On Thursday 16th September the
Senior Blades trip to Skegness finally
departed Cherry Street after a delay
of 16 months!
Although the numbers had been
depleted from the original bookings,
the day went very well. Sunshine was
the order of the day and everyone
had a really good time from a lovely
walk along the beach, a round of pitch
and put, a stroll along the prom with
coffee breaks and ice creams and of
course the obligatory seaside fare of
a delicious fish and chip tea to finish
off a good day out.
Big thanks go to our excursions
organiser, Sue Foster, who
unfortunately was unable to join us
on the day, for all her hard work in
ensuring everyone who went had
a really enjoyable day. We are all
looking forward to next year’s trip
and we’ve heard a whisper of the
proposed destination, it sounds like it
could be a really scrumptious day?
