Blades statistician ANDREW KIRKHAM delves into the archives to enlighten Unitedites with topical figures…
THREE DIFFERENT KEEPERS IN A ROW
As was mentioned in a previous programme not only have we used four different goalkeepers
so far this season but we used three different ‘keepers in successive league games. This is the
eighth time this has occurred and on two further occasions three ‘keepers have been used in two
successive games. The first time was in 1933/34 but most have been more recent. You may try to
remember who the ‘keepers were in 1979/80, 1984/85, 1998/99, 2003/04, 2009/10 and 2017/18…
THREE IN THREE GAMES:
1933/34: Harry Wilkes, Jack Smith, Jack Kendall
1934/35: Harry Wilkes, Michael McCarthy, Roy John
1949/50: Ted Burgin, Fred White, Jack Smith
1979/80: Steve Conroy, Neil Ramsbottom, Derek Richardson
1984/85: Keith Waugh, Paul Tomlinson, John Burridge
1998/99: Andy Goram, Alan Kelly, Simon Tracey
2009/10: Ian Bennett, Mark Bunn, Carl Ikeme
2021/22: Aaron Ramsdale, Michael Verrips, Wes Foderingham
THREE IN TWO GAMES:
2003/04: Paul Gerrard, Lee Baxter, Alan Fettis
2017/18: Simon Moore, Jake Eastwood and Jamal Blackman
In 2003/04 Alan Fettis
replaced Lee Baxter at half
time (both making their club
debuts). Paul Gerrard played
in the previous game. In
2017/18 Jake Eastwood
replaced red-carded Simon
Moore. Jamal Blackman
played in the following game.
HOW MANY KEEPERS
Robin Olsen is the 81st player to keep goal for the Blades in
league games (ignoring the 21 outfield players who played in
goal for an injured or red-carded ‘keeper). 12 of those have
made just one appearance, seven since 1978 – how many can
you name?
George Waller 1893/94 2-0 A Manchester Utd
Arthur Wharton 1894/95 0-2 A Sunderland
Mark Mellors 1907/08 2-2 H Arsenal
George Turnbull 1927/28 1-3 A Leicester City
Alf Ashmore 1957/58 0-2 H Leyton Orient
Nicky Johns 1978/79 3-2 H Sunderland
Mervyn Day 1991/92 0-3 A Wimbledon
Gary Kelly 2002/03 0-2 A Watford
Lee Baxter 2003/04 2-3 A Burnley
Phil Barnes 2004/05 1-0 H Rotherham United
Jake Eastwood 2017/18 0-3 A Wolves
Michael Verrips 2021/22 0-4 A West Brom
R Gary Kelly playing for United
against Watford in 2003
NOTES: George Waller was an outfield player but started the game as no regular ‘keepers were available. Mervy Day saved a
penalty. Lee Baxter played only the first half but conceded all three goals. Sub Jake Eastwood conceded only one of the three
goals. Carl Muggleton made a brief outfield sub appearance at Reading in May 1996
