DANIEL
BENTLEY
AGE: 28
POSITION: Goalkeeper
JOINED: June 2019
DID YOU
KNOW?
The former Brentford shotstopper made
his 100th Bristol City appearance away to
Millwall last month, while he also closes in
on a century in the league for the Robins.
Should he start between the sticks against
Nottingham Forest tonight, that would put
him just one away from another major
milestone!
Bentley joined from Brentford in June 2019,
where he had spent three seasons following
a seven-year spell at Southend United. In
the 2014/15 season he helped lead The
Shrimpers to League Two promotion via the
play-offs. His performances that season led
to three of the club’s end-of-season awards
as well as a place in the PFA League Two
Team of the Year.
elcome
back to
Ashton Gate as
we get set for
midweek football
under the lights.
Thank you for your support on Saturday. It was a
tough lesson for us, so it’s about learning from the
experience, keeping positive and doing everything
we can to bounce back
on Tuesday night.
I want us to control
possession a lot better
because we didn’t hit
the levels I know we
are capable of against
AFC Bournemouth. We
were disjointed and
well beaten by a very
good side on the day.
We need to compete
much better against
Nottingham Forest.
I don’t think we
can have too many
complaints because
we come into this new
fixture after playing
against the best side we
have faced so far this season. It's difficult to judge
our performance from Saturday because it was like
playing against a Premier League team, but now we
need a response.
Tuesday is another chance for us to get that win
at home. I strongly believe we can do that against
a Nottingham Forest team which has put together
some good results under Steve Cooper in recent
weeks. He has brought a lot of experience and we
IT'S DIFFICULT
TO JUDGE OUR
PERFORMANCE
FROM SATURDAY
BECAUSE IT WAS
LIKE PLAYING
AGAINST A
PREMIER LEAGUE
TEAM, BUT NOW
WE NEED A
RESPONSE.
expect to face a difficult opponent who have their
tails up at this moment in time.
We lost Joe Williams early into the game on
Saturday and at the time of writing these
programme notes it was still too early to say much
more. We feel so much for him: he’s such a hard
worker, he’s been through a lot and he has always
remained so dedicated. He’ll be supported by
everyone here while he
recovers and looks to get
fit again.
When one player misses
out, it opens more
opportunities for other
members of the squad.
The situation then is
about those players
taking their chances.
Players might find
themselves in a position
where they are required
to play so it’s not
about bemoaning the
circumstances, it’s about
new opportunities and
expecting the players
who come in to go out
there and perform.
As I say, I want to see a response tonight and a
performance we can all be proud of.
Thanks again for your support and I hope you enjoy
the game.
Cheers,
Nige
NOTTINGHAM FOREST
KEY PLAYER
7LEWIS
GRABBAN
Striker Grabban has come to form as
Nottingham Forest look to recover
from their rough start to the
campaign.
The 33-year-old forward has found
the back of the net five times this
season, with his latest strike coming
in the form of a late winner against
Blackpool on Saturday.
That was his fifth goal from seven
appearances. He has now scored in
three successive matches helping
Forest win their last three games
heading to Ashton Gate.
Grabban has been a proven
goalscorer through much of
his career which started at
Crystal Palace in 2005, having
represented the likes of Millwall,
AFC Bournemouth and Norwich City
before he joined Forest from the
Cherries for a reported £6million fee
in 2018.
10 | THE ROB NS Nottingham Forest

DID YOU
KNOW?
Forest were a title-winning heavyweight in the late-1970s,
winning the European Cup twice in succession, as well as
the UEFA Super Cup in 1979, in an era they were also Football
League champions and League Cup winners under Brian Clough.
JUST 11 MONTHS AFTER JOINING AS
MANAGER, CHRIS HUGHTON WAS
RELIEVED OF HIS DUTIES AFTER HIS
SIDE PICKED UP A SINGLE POINT FROM
THEIR OPENING SEVEN MATCHES.
That early form suggested a
relegation-threatened campaign
but a change at the helm has
instead sparked an upturn in
results.
Former Swansea Head Coach
Steve Cooper was announced
as Hughton’s successor last
month and with his changes,
Forest head to Ashton Gate
with the wind very much in their
sails after back-to-back wins
against Barnsley, Birmingham
and Blackpool during a fivegame
unbeaten run.
Last time out saw a 2-1 victory
over the Tangerines, Forest's
first home win of the season in
front of their biggest crowd of
the season to date at the City
Ground.
Striker Grabban has been
instrumental to their recent
results, with fan favourite
Lyle Taylor – who has only
completed the full 90 minutes
twice this season – struggling
for minutes.
After sitting bottom of the table
upon Cooper's arrival, they
Antoine Semenyo challenges Forest defender Joe Worrall during last
season's goalless draw at Ashton Gate, played behind closed doors
currently find themselves 16th
in the standings and will have
their sights set on continuing
that climb.
Tonight's visitors went into the
campaign on the back of heavy
turnaround in personnel, with
ten new arrivals (including five
loan signings) brought in by
the previous manager. Hughton
also oversaw the departure of
ten players in the summer as
he aimed to rejuvenate Forest's
fourtunes.
Ultimately, however, it is now
down to former Liverpool
youth coach Cooper – who led
Swansea City to the play-offs
in the past two seasons – to
deliver that ambition.
Ashton Gate
City suffered defeat at the hands
of the Championship’s remaining
unbeaten team, who returned to the
top of the table with this victory.
Jamal Lowe scored the first, before
a screamer from Jordan Zemura
just before half-time left City with a
lot of work to do.
From top: Nahki Wells narrowly fails to convert; Callum O'Dowda duels
with Bournemouth midfielder Gavin Kilkenny; Tyreeq Bakinson is watched
by Jefferson Lerma; the Ashton Gate crowd join in an ovation for Cherries
midfielder David Brooks in the seventh minute following his cancer diagnosis.
The Robins were left without
midfielder Joe Williams who was
unable to continue after he picked
up an injury in the early exchanges
of the contest and saw out the
game with ten men after Andy King
was also forced to leave the pitch.
PLAYER
INTERVIEW
CHRIS MARTIN LAYS OUT THE
NEED TO BOUNCE BACK FROM
THE WEEKEND’S DISAPPOINTMENT…
‘WE NEED TO
PUT
THINGS
RIGHT’
There was
frustration
in the air
as the final
whistle
rang out on Saturday. AFC
Bournemouth ran out 2-0
winners at Ashton Gate but
City’s players knew they hadn’t
given the league leaders a run
for their money.
Tuesday night sees the Robins
back in BS3 and the chance to
bounce back with Chris Martin
explaining City’s desire to put
things right.
The striker told THE ROB NS:
“We could’ve still lost the game,
even at our best, because
AFC Bournemouth are such
a good team but we didn’t
quite put it altogether. We’ve
been disappointed in our own
performance a few times so
now we have a great chance to
put things right with another
game right around the corner.”
There is no guarantee that
playing their best football
will guarantee results but it’s
certainly a solid platform 4
WE’RE AT OUR
BEST WHEN WE
WORK REALLY
WELL TOGETHER
AND IT’S THE
RESPONSIBILITY OF
EVERYONE TO DO
THEIR JOBS.
4 and if they can do that,
the players know they
can grab that home win
that has eluded them for
so long.
Martin continued: “We are
still a work in progress
and the game on Saturday
showed there is still a lot
for us to work on. What
disappointed us the most
was that we weren’t at our
best. If we could guarantee
a performance it’s about
bringing our best to the
table, having belief in each
other and being more
aggressive. That’s what
we lacked at the weekend,
so we need to be on the
front foot and make it a
really difficult game for
Nottingham Forest.
“We’re at our best when
we work really well
together and it’s the
responsibility of everyone
to do their jobs. It doesn’t
have to be pretty. Of
course we hope to play
well and score a lot of
goals, but if we win 1-0 in
a scrappy game I’ll take it.”
Forest head to BS3 on
the back of a five-game
unbeaten streak, including
three consecutive wins
under new manager Steve
Cooper. They have found
new belief and therefore
present another difficult
challenge.
“They’ve changed to a
shape Cooper has used
before when at Swansea
City with the 4-3-3 but
we’ve played against it
before,” said Martin.
“They have more good
players, there’s nothing
new there but we’re
looking to bounce back.
We need to make sure we
put our home form right
for this one, we’ve done
YOUNG POETS
COMPETITION
The Robins Foundation has
launched a new competition
aiming to inspire kids to get
creative with their poetry.
The competition launched on National Poetry Day
(October 7th) with hundreds of school children in
the local area.
Working with our 15 partner schools, the schools
are currently getting their Year 5 and 6 students to
write poems based on the theme of ‘Ambition’.
The best poems from each school will be judged
by a special select panel, with the winning poem
to be published in a future edition of THE ROB NS
Matchday Programme.
This is expected to be towards the end of 2021
and the Foundation will invite the winning poet
to that Bristol City home game for a half-time
presentation.
Good luck to all the children involved and we can’t
wait to read the entries!
Primary Stars Lead Coach James Howiantz said:
“We are so excited to be launching this poetry
competition. We hope it inspires children in the local
area to get creative and write something personal
to them.
“We believe that being ambitious is vital in all parts
of life so by focusing on this subject, we want the
children to express what ambition means to them.”
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
