Donovan sworn into office

as newest city councillor 

TUESDAY WAS a big day for 

new Coastal Ward city councillor 

Celeste Donovan, as she was 

officially sworn into office. 

Donovan takes a seat at the 

council table after winning the 

Coastal Ward by-election, replacing 

James Daniels who resigned 

earlier this year. 

Thanking the Coastal Ward 

voters for their support, Donovan 

promised to make sure their 

voice was heard at the council 

table. 

“It’s a quite a responsibility 

being selected to sit around this 

table and advocate for both my 

beautiful Coastal Ward and the 

city as a whole,’’ she said in her 

inaugural speech. 

“I’ve always been a firm 

believer in people, not politics. 

The communities that make up 

the Coastal Ward need a strong 

voice that isn’t afraid to stand up 

and take on the challenges of the 

future. This is what motivated me 

to stand for this position.” 

Donovan said she hoped to 

have “some part” in shaping a 

positive future for the area.

Construction is underway on a 

new home for the Anzac Fronds. 

The four frond stands will be 

unveiled at the Anzac Drive-

a breakthrough year. 

Sarah was awarded para 

athlete of the year at the 

Canterbury Athletics awards in 

June for getting multiple New 

Zealand senior women’s T53 

wheelchair distance records 

and then adding wins at the 

national secondary schools 

para athletics event, before 

completing her first half 

marathon at Ruapuna raceway 

in 1hr 26m and finishing the 

Christchurch Marathon 10km 

race in first place with a time 

of 35min, knocking 13min 

off her previous time from 

2018. 

Kyla was selected for the New 

Zealand under-16 girls touch 

rugby team in 2020 and then this 

year earned selection for the New 

Zealand under-18 years girls 

team to compete in the Youth 

Trans-Tasman Touch Series in 

April 2022. 

Her other passion is basketball 

and a highlight for this 

experienced age group regional 

representative was being selected 

to be part of the Canterbury 

High School All Star boys and 

girls games played as pre-games 

to the Sky Sport NZ Breakers 

game at Horncastle Arena in 

December 2019. 

Two Avonside Girls’ High 

School students also received 

highly commendeds in the 

awards list – Alisha Mill for 

boccia and Amelia Sykes for 

cycling.

End of days for 

Art-O-Mat 


IT HAS stood for almost six years, but the 

solitary Art-O-Mat tiny hut in the New 

Brighton Mall will soon have its future 

decided. 

The Art-O-Mat was developed 

and delivered by the Enliven Places 

Programme in 2016 as part of the New 

Brighton Tiny Huts competition. 

The city council said the last of the five 

tiny huts has reached the end of its useful 

life in the programme, and has offered it to 

community groups as a gift. 

Urban design, regeneration and heritage 

manager Carolyn Ingles said a number of 

groups are interested in the asset for their 

community projects. 

“A decision has not yet been made on 

which group will receive the asset,” she 

said. 

Each of the five tiny huts measured 2m 

x 2m, and were installed over the summer

round of funding earned from poker 

machine proceeds. 

The New Zealand Community Trust 

handed out $1,424,688 to Canterbury 

sports organisations, of which over 

$45,000 was allocated to sporting groups

The Art-o Mat, designed by 

Sasha Samardziska, has seen good service 

as a pop-up art space for the display and 

sale of art and craft. It is portable and has 

been moved to many different locations 

around the mall over the years. 

Of the five other huts, the interactive 

#MyBrightonHut was eventually moved to 

the children’s sensory garden in Rawhiti 

Domain in 2018, while the Maori-inspired 

hut, Te Wharau, designed by Shirley Boys’ 

High student Manaia Wilson-Moses, was 

returned to the school in 2017. 

The Shell Chapel, designed by Ting 

Lin, near the Pier steps, was removed 

in 2017, while the Turret, a two-storey 

black hut that could be climbed to get 

a better view of the beach, was also 

decommissioned.

up there. Vet Kirsty was up 

for the job and needed to 

do quite a bit of research 

on safest drugs to use and 

the surgical procedure itself 

which is different from a dog 

castration. 

Hatter, a 6 month old pig 

weighing 24kg was neutered 

so he didn’t breed with the 2 

year old Kune Kune pig, Alice, 

both who reside in the house, 

often seen draped over the 

sofas. Hatter was adopted 

when only a few weeks old 

as he was found alone on a 

sheep farm. He needed round 

the clock feeding and nursing 

and has ended up being a 

great companion for Alice. 

Hatter trotted into the clinic and 

headed into his hospital run for his 

day in the dog ward. Imagine the 

dogs surprise seeing a pig walk into 

their space. Macy was terrified when 

she heard Hatter squeal and made 

a run for my consult room. Pigs are 

very vocal and get stressed easily 

which is why Kirsty gave Hatter 

Midazolam 

up his nose 

to chill him 

out before 

his sedative. 

Kirsty placed 

an intravenous 

catheter, 

which she 

read was 

difficult, but 

she got the 

vein in one 

shot. Once 

sedated, 

Hatter was 

masked with 

Oxygen and 

Isoflurane,
