Donovan sworn into office
In Brief
as newest city councillor
TUESDAY WAS a big day for
new Coastal Ward city councillor
Celeste Donovan, as she was
officially sworn into office.
Donovan takes a seat at the
council table after winning the
Coastal Ward by-election, replacing
James Daniels who resigned
earlier this year.
Thanking the Coastal Ward
voters for their support, Donovan
promised to make sure their
voice was heard at the council
table.
“It’s a quite a responsibility
being selected to sit around this
table and advocate for both my
beautiful Coastal Ward and the
city as a whole,’’ she said in her
inaugural speech.
“I’ve always been a firm
believer in people, not politics.
The communities that make up
the Coastal Ward need a strong
voice that isn’t afraid to stand up
and take on the challenges of the
future. This is what motivated me
to stand for this position.”
Donovan said she hoped to
have “some part” in shaping a
positive future for the area.
“While it is difficult on council
to be a master of everything,
some of the things I will be
focusing on is how do we address
the impacts of climate change,
particularly relating to the coastal
area. How do we do community
engagement in a way that works
for the communities, and how
do we work with people that
have great ideas about enhancing
Christchurch as a great place
to live.’’
Still Standing
What i’ve learnt from a life lived differently
by Jess Quinn
Jess Quinn is, in her own words, quite literally a walking miracle. Her body
has been completely restructured so that she could survive an aggressive
cancer. Jess’ leg was amputated when she was a young child, and she
has worn a prosthetic leg ever since. She’s created a successful modelling
career, has a huge following on social media, was on Dancing with the Stars
and is outspoken on the subject of body diversity. She has strong messages
about resilience. Jess has a remarkable way of talking about her pain and
difficulties, and is inspirational in her response to the difficulties that have
beset her. Her philosophy embraces the fact that none of us get to keep the
body we were born in; we all bear scars that become part of our stories.
Marae — Te Tatau Pounamu
a Journey around new Zealand’s meeting Houses
by muru Walters, robin Walters and sam Walters
A magnificent, prize-winning documentation of and tribute to New Zealand’s
wharenui, big and small. Bishop Muru Walters is a very well-known Anglican
minister. He is also a master carver, poet, broadcaster and former Maori All Black.
His son Robin is a photographer and filmmaker, who is director at Curious Films.
Sam Walters, Robin’s wife, is a photographer. Together the Walters spent three
years visiting some of this country’s major meeting houses as well as many of the
more humble ones — houses that serve smaller hapu and iwi — to bring together
a beautiful photographic book on the meeting house. From north to south, from
the east coast to the west, and from ancient wharenui to bold new designs, this
handsome book, with its engaging personal text, captures the huge variety of New
Zealand’s original architecture. It’s a book for all New Zealanders to treasure.
Hellzapoppin’! The Art of Flying Nun
by Peter Vangioni, Kath Webster, russell Brown and
roger shepherd
Unruly art and design from the early years of Flying Nun Records. From rare
collectible records and vintage posters to original artworks and paste-up
designs, this 92 page book explores the art and artists behind some of New
Zealand’s favourite bands. Entertaining essays from are interspersed with
brief interview-style contributions from the people responsible for creating the
art of the label. Heavily illustrated, it features original artwork for the records
and posters, photography from the archives, and rarely seen vinyl releases
and posters. By talking to the people responsible, this book will burst a few
enduring myths, and maybe start some new ones.
Operation Trojan Horse the true story behind
the secret of Flight 149 and the most shocking government
cover-up of the last thirty years. by stephen davis
On 1 August, 1990, British Airways Flight 149 departed from Heathrow airport,
destined for Kuala Lumpur. It never made it there, and neither did its nearly 400
passengers. Instead, Flight 149 stopped to refuel in Kuwait, as Iraqi troops amassed
on the border - delivering the passengers and crew into the hands of Saddam
Hussein and the Iraqi army, to be used as ‘human shields’ during their invasion.
There is an exchange of favours at the highest echelons of government, and a secret,
unaccountable organization - authorised by Margaret Thatcher - carrying out a
‘deniable’ intelligence operation to sneak in a group of intelligence officers into Kuwait
aboard the flight. The plane was the ‘Trojan Horse’, and the plan - as well as the
horrific, traumatic consequences for the civilian passengers - has been lied about,
denied and covered up by successive British Governments ever since.
End of days for
Art-O-Mat
• By John Cosgrove
IT HAS stood for almost six years, but the
solitary Art-O-Mat tiny hut in the New
Brighton Mall will soon have its future
decided.
The Art-O-Mat was developed
and delivered by the Enliven Places
Programme in 2016 as part of the New
Brighton Tiny Huts competition.
The city council said the last of the five
tiny huts has reached the end of its useful
life in the programme, and has offered it to
community groups as a gift.
Urban design, regeneration and heritage
manager Carolyn Ingles said a number of
groups are interested in the asset for their
community projects.
“A decision has not yet been made on
which group will receive the asset,” she
said.
Each of the five tiny huts measured 2m
x 2m, and were installed over the summer
round of funding earned from poker
The New Zealand Community Trust
handed out $1,424,688 to Canterbury
sports organisations, of which over
$45,000 was allocated to sporting groups
in the Pegasus area.
The North Avon BMX Club secured
$30,000 for a new asphalt pump track for
spaces and evoke memories of English
seaside beach huts.
The Art-o Mat, designed by
Sasha Samardziska, has seen good service
as a pop-up art space for the display and
sale of art and craft. It is portable and has
been moved to many different locations
around the mall over the years.
Of the five other huts, the interactive
#MyBrightonHut was eventually moved to
the children’s sensory garden in Rawhiti
Domain in 2018, while the Maori-inspired
hut, Te Wharau, designed by Shirley Boys’
High student Manaia Wilson-Moses, was
returned to the school in 2017.
The Shell Chapel, designed by Ting
Lin, near the Pier steps, was removed
in 2017, while the Turret, a two-storey
black hut that could be climbed to get
a better view of the beach, was also
decommissioned.
Pokie proceeds go
to sports groups
their site at Bexley Park, while North Beach
Surf Life Saving Club received $10,000 to
purchase a new surf canoe and oars.
Queenspark School’s $6436 will buy
some new basketball hoops.
Crossroads Youth with a Future from
Aranui will put its grant of $5000 towards
a salary.
The NZCT funds were provided by the
proceeds from poker machines operated
in 16 establishments in Christchurch,
Methven and Timaru.
My vets and nurses are
always up for a challenge
and castrating a pig is right
up there. Vet Kirsty was up
for the job and needed to
do quite a bit of research
on safest drugs to use and
the surgical procedure itself
which is different from a dog
castration.
Hatter, a 6 month old pig
weighing 24kg was neutered
so he didn’t breed with the 2
year old Kune Kune pig, Alice,
both who reside in the house,
often seen draped over the
sofas. Hatter was adopted
when only a few weeks old
as he was found alone on a
sheep farm. He needed round
the clock feeding and nursing
and has ended up being a
great companion for Alice.
Hatter trotted into the clinic and
headed into his hospital run for his
day in the dog ward. Imagine the
dogs surprise seeing a pig walk into
their space. Macy was terrified when
she heard Hatter squeal and made
a run for my consult room. Pigs are
very vocal and get stressed easily
which is why Kirsty gave Hatter
Midazolam
up his nose
to chill him
out before
his sedative.
Kirsty placed
an intravenous
catheter,
which she
read was
difficult, but
she got the
vein in one
shot. Once
sedated,
Hatter was
masked with
Oxygen and
Isoflurane,
attached to
blood pressure
and SpO2
monitoring
equipment
and then fully
prepared
for surgical
castration. Pigs
easily so he was actively warmed
with hotties and heat pads. The
surgery itself went well and Kirsty
placed intradermal dissolving sutures
so Hatter had nothing to chew out!!
His recovery was fantastic and he
was pleased to see his mum on
pickup.
Hatter is really smart and has learnt
commands, enjoys enrichment
games and
lots of cuddles.
When asked
to lie down,
he flops down
expecting a
belly rub. He
gets on with all
his extended
family including
two Bichons,
Ben and Cooper,
a bossy Turkey
called Ricki and
4 cats. He really
enjoys attention
from visitors and
isn’t scared of
anything.
I wonder
what surgical
challenge
presents itself
next month?
