Clitheroe
by Chris Pearce
Distance: 4.3 miles Difficulty: Easy
This month Jack’s Tracks visits the market town of Clitheroe,
the flagship hub of the Ribble Valley. This delightful 4.3-
mile walk constitutes countryside and the River Ribble,
the thriving town centre and a walk up to the magnificent
centrepiece of the town, Clitheroe Castle. For those who
fancy coupling the walk with a bit of Christmas shopping
and a few drinks, the starting point of the walk is right next
to Clitheroe rail station. Please be aware though, that there
are a couple of very steep stone stiles on the walk, so it may
not be suitable for those walkers with larger dogs.
Leave the car park opposite the Royal Mail building on
Chester Avenue (BB7 0BD), then turn right and bear right
through the semi-pedestrianised area (Corbridge Court).
Once you reach the T-Junction, turn right again, then go
past Albion House onto the single-track Back Commons
Road.
Follow this track and turn right at Commons House. When
you reach the dog-leg bend, you’ll need to take the stile
on the right, and, immediately afterwards, another stile
on the right. Walk along the right-hand perimeter of the
field towards the stile in the corner. Don’t cross the stile
though; instead turn left and follow the footpath around
the same field.
At the corner of that field, cross another stile and head
across the field diagonally towards a manor house
(Waddow Hall) until you hear the rushing sound of water
from the nearby weir. Go down the steps to the right
and follow that footpath for 1/3 mile to the handsome
Brungerley Bridge. Exit the path, turn left and cross over
the bridge carefully.
