Bikes for kids in need 

My First Bicycle Foundation today announced that it has 

launched a bicycle program across Canada. Under the program, 

financially disadvantaged children can now receive a 

brand-new bicycle, helmet, and lock from My First Bicycle 

Foundation. 

Applications will be accepted in the spring of 2022 and bikes 

will to be shipped in May and June of 2022. To qualify for 

this program, applicants must complete the My First Bicycle 

online application in full. The child’s household must meet 

the low-income cut off as published by the Canada Revenue

Kootenay-produced Comedy 

Theatre coming to the Langham! 

Domesticated Disputes explores a very wild day in the life of 

a very domestic lady and reveals the feral impulses lurking just 

underneath the carpet of even the most proper home. 

On the surface Evelyn is the perfect housewife running 

an impeccable household. But just below the exterior, she is 

stewing in her own repressed juices, frustrated by the endless 

dreary duties of everyday life. One day, in the course of her 

chores, deep, mysterious, primal urges come bubbling to the 

fore. Struggle as she might to stay spick and span, things get 

kinda dirty. 

Written and performed by Marya Folinsbee, Disputes is a 

one act, one-woman comedy theatre piece and the latest creation 

from Material Theatre, an emergent rural theatre company 

located on Sinixt Territory in the Slocan Valley. 

Folinsbee describes the show as “a little bit clowny, with lots 

of physical theatre, feminist content, funny and poignant too.” 

Note that Domesticated Disputes is intended for audiences 

aged 18 and up due to adult content, including pseudo-nudity 

and sexual references.

Mental health: a 

priority issue 

One of the most important elements of 

formal education from a development standpoint 

is the opportunity to socialize in a 

friendly and open environment. For many 

school-aged children, the schoolyard is their 

main source of building relationships with 

peers. Group projects. Middle-school plays. 

Lunchtime in the cafeteria. 

It’s through these moments of interaction 

with classmates and friends that students 

learn to trust, cooperate with, and support 

one another. But with the pandemic still casting 

its shadow over our lives, these students 

have faced school closures, re-openings, distance 

learning, more isolation in the classroom, 

and an increased reliance on social 

media to communicate — whether that’s 

by actively participating in conversations 

The BC SPCA Nelson Branch is seeking 

fosters to help us help animals in 

need. If you are able to open your doors 

and hearts, we would love to hear from 

you! As a member of our foster family,

or passively consuming content and merely 

being aware of their friends’ lives. 

“Isolation and a lack of safe social connections 

are issues that have only been 

exacerbated by the pandemic,” said Gareth

Safety Council. “Between the importance of 

these issues and a growing recognition that 

social media channels often exist to promote 

engagement over mental health, it’s all 

the more important that we check in with 

children more frequently and help them to

at large, must stay connected with 

the world around them. Especially at such a 

seminal age, it’s vital that these social skills 

continue to be developed. That’s why, even 

when it’s not in a student’s nature to reach out

Fall lake fishing tactics 

I often get asked when the best time of year 

to fish for trout in lakes is. Unfortunately, it is 

not a simple answer, since there can be good 

fishing at all times of year – including ice fishing 

in winter. However, there is a lot to be said 

about the spring and fall seasons. Spring has 

good fishing because water temperatures are 

warming, and that stimulates fishes’ feeding 

activity. Also, the majority of aquatic insect 

emergences occur during the spring and early 

summer months, and trout and char feed 

heavily on these prolific hatches. In autumn, 

trout again feed aggressively, not necessarily 

on insect hatches, but rather on the same 

insects’ immature nymphal or larval stages, 

along with other invertebrates (like leeches, 

freshwater shrimp, water boatman, and backswimmers). 

There are also several other reasons 

why fall fishing can be outstanding, so 

let’s take a closer look at why we should be out 

on the water over the next couple of months. 

Remember that since all fish are coldblooded, 

each species has temperature ranges 

in which they are the most active. When 

water temperatures go above that range in the 

hot summer months, or below that during the 

coldest months of winter, it slows the metabolisms 

and feeding levels of trout and char – 

often reflected in their unwillingness to bite! 

Dropping autumn air temperatures allow the 

lake water to also cool down, which brings 

fish back into a feeding state. Trout and char 

living in the thousands of small lakes of the 

province’s interior will endure several months 

of ice cover. During fall, fish need to put on 

as much body fat as possible to get them 

through the long winter. When the shallow 

or shoal areas of a lake cool down enough, 

it is more comfortable for fish to forage for

longer periods of time and, in preparation 

for winter, feed even more aggressively as the 

temperatures continue to drop. 

Always be on the lookout for active fish: 

ones that are showing themselves on the 

surface of the lake. Fish that are 

rising, jumping, or rolling not 

only indicate their presence but, 

potentially, fish that are actively 

feeding. The key is to fish the 

areas of the lake where fish are 

concentrated; move to where the 

fish are active. 

In autumn, fish a lake’s shallower 

areas – from 1.5 to five 

metres (five to 16 feet) in depth 

– where the natural food sources 

of trout and char are found. Try 

fly-fishing with leech, water boatman 

or shrimp patterns; trolling

Carter says that sort of testimonial along with the recommendations 

and endorsement of CARF are very rewarding for everyone 

at the Skills Centre. 

“The organization has worked hard to create a professional yet 

personal and welcoming workplace that both the staff members 

and community members appreciate,” the CARF certification 

committee said in granting the Skills Centre its accreditation. 

The Skills Centre is one of only two organizations in the region

Trail Museum & Archives 

How many of us in BC can say “hello” in the language of the 

people on whose traditional territory we live, work and play? 

You might find yourself expanding your vocabulary—and 

appreciation for the state of Indigenous languages spoken in 

BC—after visiting the Trail Museum & Archives to view the 

Our Living Languages: First Peoples’ Voices in BC travelling 

exhibition. 

Learn what First Nations communities throughout the 

province are doing to help 34 different languages survive and 

flourish, in Our Living Languages, a beautifully designed 

exhibition from the Royal BC Museum and First Peoples’ 

Cultural Council that celebrates the resilience and diversity of 

Indigenous languages in the face of change. 

“This exhibit is beyond enlightening,” says Museum & 

Archives Manager, Sarah Benson-Lord. “This glimpse into 

Indigenous language loss and its revitalization will prompt 

anyone to want to learn more about Indigenous cultures. We 

hope this exhibit generates much more awareness into local 

and regional Indigenous initiatives, challenges, and even 

allyship.” 

Languages, especially the languages we grow up with, are 

powerful and potent markers of identity and culture. BC, one 

of the planet’s most linguistically diverse regions, is known as 

a linguistic “hotspot” because of the diversity and vitality of 

the First Nations languages in BC. 

Through interactive stations, video and audio, Our Living 

Languages provides visitors with the opportunity to learn 

more about the history of disrupted languages in BC, the 

complexity of these languages, and the people–and entire 

communities–that are working tirelessly to document and 

revitalize them. 

The original exhibition of the same name was developed in 

partnership with the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and is a 

permanent fixture on the 3rd floor of the Royal BC Museum, 

in Victoria. 

The travelling exhibition runs from October 22, 2021 to 

May 30, 2022 at the Trail Museum & Archives in the Riverfront

Outdoors and place-based education got a big boost during 

the pandemic. Administrators and teachers realized that moving 

learning outside was a good way to avoid viral transmission. 

Once they were out there, they needed to adapt their 

approach to teaching – it had to be more real. 

Dave Quinn is a wildlife biologist, certified wilderness 

guide, outdoor educator, and certified teacher. He offers many 

K-12 outdoor education programs for a variety of schools and 

organizations including several of the Kootenay Conservation 

Society’s Canadian outdoor learning partners. He has a passion 

for wilderness and wildlife, and works hard to connect 

the next generation to the wild.

Dissolution of the Municipality of 

Jumbo Glacier is a win for people 

and the environment 

New Democrat MLA Brittny Anderson is glad to see the 

ending of a contentious resort in the Kootenays, the Mountain 

Resort Municipality of Jumbo Glacier (Jumbo). 

“People across the Kootenays and the Ktunaxa Nation 

fought the development of Jumbo from the start, and today’s 

announcement is a win shared by everyone who worked so hard 

to keep Jumbo wild,” said Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. 

Prior to Jumbo, a municipality could not be created without 

residents. Despite having no residents to benefit from municipal 

services, Jumbo was slated to receive over $1 million in 

grants from the BC Liberal government over five years. In 

response, the Union of BC Municipalities passed a motion 

in 2014 opposing the funding of any municipalities without 

residents. 

The area is one of the largest remaining swathes of land in 

BC without paved roads and is important habitat for many 

species, including grizzlies. 

The area was protected by the BC NDP, working with the 

federal government and Ktunaxa Nation, in January 2020 and 

will be known as Qat’muk, the Ktunaxa name meaning Home 

of the Grizzly Bear Spirit. To guarantee its permanent protection, 

the next step is to dissolve the municipality. To do that, 

Bill 26 was introduced in the legislature. 

Jumbo is the first local government to be dissolved in the 

province in roughly 100 years. Amendments in the legislation 

prevent future governments from creating Mountain Resort 

Municipalities with no residents again.

Castlegar Campus and a 36-bed student housing building on 

the Silver King Campus. Both new buildings will include two

With more than 2,800 full-time students on its campuses and 

learning centres throughout the region, Selkirk College currently 

offers 100 beds at its student housing facility on the Castlegar 

Campus and 109 beds at the Tenth Street Campus in Nelson. 

From social workers to nurses, millwrights to graphic 

designers and conservation officers to chefs, Selkirk College’s 

60-plus programs are essential to moving the region forward 

with career-ready education. A significant capital project that 

is anticipated to break ground in early 2022, it is expected that 

students will be living in the new housing by September 2023. 

With extremely low vacancy rates both West Kootenay communities, 

the 148 new beds at Selkirk College will help address 

direct needs and free up housing stock in other parts of the 

region. The Nelson component of the project will be the first 

student housing offered at the Silver King Campus. 

The $24.5 million project includes a $17.8 million grant from 

the government and a loan of $5.8 million. Columbia Basin Trust 

(CBT) has come on board to provide the remaining $900,000

Escape from a sinking car 

You’ve just driven your car into a river or over the side of a 

bridge into a lake. What can you do to save yourself? 

The mere thought of your car plunging off a bridge into 

the icy water below can send shivers down your spine. But 

with proper planning you can increase your chances of survival. 

Follow these tips to escape from a sinking vehicle from 

Jason Lyman, assistant chief of the Islamorada Fire & Rescue 

Department of Village of Islands, Florida. 

1. Don’t panic. 

Though it’s a terrifying situation to be sure, the key to making 

it out of a sinking car is to focus and keep your wits about 

you. Panicking will only waste time that you do not have. 

2. Skip mobile communication. 

Trying to call 911 to come and rescue you isn’t your best 

move because the responders probably won’t get there in 

time—and time is of the essence. 

3. Unlock the doors. 

If it’s dark, first turn on your interior lights then unlock your 

doors. A vehicle’s electronics system should work for some 

time after your crash. 

4. Plot your escape. 

Your car will stay afloat for a short time, so use this opportunity 

to escape. Remove heavy clothing, roll down your windows, 

and swim away as fast as you can. Do not worry about 

trying to save your purse, your wallet, or any other personal 

items; survival is the name of the game. Plus, if it is winter, 

your risk of hypothermia increases the longer you’re in the 

water. The quicker you can get out, the better.

5. Wait to open the door. 

This sounds scary, but you won’t be able to open the door 

until the car is fully submerged: rising water puts too much 

pressure against it. Once the pressure inside has equalized, the 

doors should open, though sitting and waiting for this to happen 

can cause panic. Concentrate on your next move instead. 

6. If you can’t open the door, break a window. If the electrical 

system has already failed, you can try kicking the window 

out. It is wise to keep a tool like a centre punch or something 

similar accessible in your car at all times. Many of the products

Teck Trail Operations to stage joint 

emergency response exercise 

On Wednesday, November 3, 2021, Teck 

Trail Operations, the Kootenay Boundary 

Regional Fire Rescue and the 

Regional District Kootenay Boundary 

Emergency Program will be staging an 

emergency response exercise. This exercise 

is a training opportunity for Teck 

and our mutual aid partners. 

The exercise will take place at Teck’s 

Warfield Operations from 7:30 am to 

1:00 pm. During this time, there will 

be an increase in emergency response 

vehicles in the area. Bingay Road will 

be closed to traffic during this time 

with traffic control in place. Traffic can 

detour via Highway 22. 

The mock exercise will involve many 

community and mutual aid partners 

including the Regional District Kootenay 

Boundary Emergency Program 

Partners (the City of Trail and the Village 

of Warfield), Kootenay Boundary 

Regional Fire Rescue, RCMP, BC 

Ambulance Service, Kootenay Boundary 

Regional Hospital, School District 

No. 20, and FortisBC. The exercise is 

being coordinated with the assistance of 

a consulting firm specializing in crisis 

management. 

Safety is a core value at Teck Trail

Riparian restoration 2021 

For the past three years CKISS has conducted restoration 

efforts at three locations: Erie Lake in Salmo, Beaver Creek in 

Trail and Snk’mip Marsh Sanctuary just north of New Denver. 

For the first two years (2019-2020) the project had enthusiastic 

participation from over 250 volunteers who helped us plant 878 

native species and remove a ton of invasive plants. This year we 

focused on monitoring the sites for native plant survivorship 

and the presence of invasive plants. 

It has been such a pleasure to work on these restoration 

efforts with our wonderful volunteers, students and partners. 

The progress that has been made in restoring these site is very 

exciting and we look forward to seeing what the future holds. The 

Riparian Restoration in the Kootenay Region Project may have 

wrapped up but this does not mean the restoration work is done. 

Native planting and community weed pull events continued at 

the sites in 2021 thanks to support from BC Parks, Columbia 

Basin Trust, the Government of BC, Valhalla Foundation for 

Ecology, Kinseed, the Kootenay Native Plant Society and our 

keen volunteers.

Call for entry! 

Oxygen Art Centre (OAC) is excited to announce the launch 

of their new Online Mentorship Program. Beginning in January 

2022 OAC will be offering affordable one-on-one online mentorship 

opportunities for individual artists to receive two 1-hour 

mentorship sessions with one of OAC’s faculty. 

Each online mentorship will be individually designed to 

meet the needs and interests of the individual artist, potentially 

involving technical demonstrations, advice, professional development, 

and/or critique regarding a specific project or technical 

area of development. Organized in a two-session format, each 

mentorship will allow mentees to begin an area of inquiry in the 

first session and then have the opportunity to put some of their 

learning into practice before sharing and discussing their new 

work or development in the second session. 

OAC Education Coordinator, Natasha Smith shares that “This 

is a new Oxygen educational experience which is very affordable 

thanks to funding from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance. 

We encourage artists of all levels to apply and learn from 

one of our talented and experienced OAC faculty members.” 

The program will offer 10 mentorships, as well as 2 youth 

scholarships. Applications are now open and will remain open 

until the deadline of November 15, 5 pm. Approved mentees 

will be matched with an Oxygen Artist Instructor depending on 

their practice, medium, and stated goals.

Daughter gets late mother’s book published 

Watch for the release of a stunning new novel, 

The Thorn by Doreen Zaiss of Gray Creek, BC. 

This novel stretches itself from Zaiss’ Norwegian 

roots into an intricate and painfully detailed 

imagined story of a family in the late 1800s in 

Norway, struggling to survive in the harshest 

climate and some of the direst circumstances. 

Zaiss was a nearly 50-year resident of the East 

Shore of Kootenay Lake and a fixture in the 

Crawford Bay school system as well as culture 

of the communities of the area. She passed away 

in March of 2020 but managed to finish this last 

powerful project before she died. She was dearly

loved, immensely 

talented and is 

sorely missed. 

Her daughter, Ingrid Baetzel, is the editor of 

the East Shore newspaper, The East Shore Mainstreet, 

and is exceedingly proud to bring her

It is with great sadness that the family of Tim Soukeroff 

announces his passing on September 2, 2021, at the age 

of 78 years. 

Tim will be lovingly remembered by his wife, of 55 years, 

Marline Soukeroff, as well as his three children, Terry 

Soukeroff, Karen (Tim) Miller, Leon (Kim) Soukeroff; 

two grandsons, Logan Miller, Cody Soukeroff, and one 

granddaughter, Maranda Miller. 

Tim was predeceased by his parents Mary and Larry 

Soukeroff, his brother Mike, his two sisters, Dorothy 

Nespiak, and Mary Posnikoff. 

Tim worked in construction in the early years, and then 

many years in the logging and forestry industry as a faller 

and machine operator. He retired in 2003. 

Dad enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, music. His 

hobbies changed over the years, but included carpentry, 

where he made plant stands and spice racks. Then turned 

to driving... every day, anywhere and everywhere, but 

especially to Creston for fish n’ chips, where he met up 

with many friends.
