Designing Modernity: Architecture in the
Arab World 1945–1973 is the result of a fascinating
investigation by international experts
into the influences of modernist architecture
in the Arab world. Nine case studies provide
the foundation for a thorough exploration of
the relevant cultural-historical, sociopolitical,
climatic and demographic aspects. Questions
concerning the region’s reciprocal
relationship with modernist architecture in
the period from 1945 to 1973 are investigated
through the biographies of selected
buildings and building complexes from Iraq,
Lebanon, Kuwait, Syria, Palestine, Jordan,
Egypt and Morocco. Texts, contemporary
images, architectural drawings and archival
material are used to document the process
from commissioning and design through to
completion and building use.

Summer Olympics in Munich spatially embodied the hope of a
new era for the young German Republic. The vision of a cosmopolitan
society found expression in a swinging roof construction
over gently undulating landscape forms and fresh, clean colors.

achievements behind the iconic Olympia architecture—as told
from the perspective of the congenial collaboration between its

At the beginning of the economic crisis in 2007, housing became
a central commodity in the short-circuit system of mortgages
granted to private individuals and businesses. In the aftermath of
the crisis, and in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic, housing—
as a right, in its most radical form—re-emerged due to local housing,
migration, and health emergencies. In light of an eclipse of
a general discourse on housing, a new secular and international
ethics arose, both foreign and superior to nation states. This book
returns to a broader notion of housing: using metaphors of sanitary
and salvific reinstatement, it retrieves case studies from the
1950s for re-conceptualizing the housing question in contemporary
architecture and visual arts.

Urban and rural areas alike witness severe dynamics. Moreover,
understandings of what constitutes the urban and the rural are
changing, too. Metapolis conceptualizes the network of urban
and rural settlements interconnected by flows of people, goods,
and information. How can this Metapolis be understood and
evolve in a more sustainable manner? By example of two study
regions in Lower Saxony—a federal state of Germany consisting
of few large cities, mostly mid-sized and small towns, suburbs,
and villages—this volume presents an innovative analytical framework
called Topoi, offering a new perspective on urban-rural
development. Different scenarios explore innovative solutions for
sustainable planning and design along the urban-rural gradient.

The architect plans, the builder gives his blessing, the population is
presented with the finished result. Fortunately, this planning culture,
handed down over many centuries, has changed in recent decades.
A pioneer of this development is the architectural office nonconform,
based in Austria and Germany. The starting point of their planning is
collaborative work with locals. The subsequent results are then further
developed with clients, whereby the wishes and ideas of local participants
and residents form the basis for further planning steps. In the
last 20 years, almost 200 participation projects were developed in this
manner—with large and small municipalities, as well as with public and
private companies, including a mixed-use residential neighborhood in
Upper Bavaria, a revitalized town center in Saarland, and a bright, red
main square in Lower Austria. The book takes a look behind the scenes
of this exceptional planning practice and lets builders and experts have
their say.

Das Ziel von nonconform ist die Gestaltung
von feinen Räumen für Menschen,
um ein gutes Leben am Land und in der
Stadt zu ermöglichen. Ganz nach unserem
Motto → MITEINANDER WEITER
DENKEN ist für uns Architektur nicht
nur das Planen und Realisieren neuer Gebäude,
sondern viel mehr – nämlich ein
langfristig lebendiges Umfeld für unterschiedliche
Lebensbereiche zu schaffen,
indem Partizipation und Planung Hand
in Hand gehen. In unserer Arbeit sowie
in unserer Bürokultur verlassen wir ausgetrampelte
Wege und beleben mit partizipativer
Planung Räume und Plätze neu,
schaffen nutzungsoffene, urbane Gebäude
und handeln nachhaltig.
Entstanden ist dabei in den vergangenen
zwei Jahren die nonconform Stadt. Die
Reise war lustvoll und herausfordernd,
hat uns als Organisation beweglicher und
schlagfertiger gemacht – und sie geht
noch weiter.
Stadt und Land. Ein gutes Gebäude muss
auf veränderte Rahmenbedingungen
reagieren können. Deshalb planen wir
nutzungsoffen und legen bei der Programmierung
Wert auf einen guten →
NUTZUNGSMIX. Wir stärken Orts- und
Stadtkerne nachhaltig und beteiligen dabei
die Menschen, die es betrifft – denn
wir leben in einer Zeit, die einem sehr
dynamischen Wandel unterliegt. Die mit
der Digitalisierung verbundene Schnelllebigkeit,
der Drang nach Mitsprache und
Phänomene wie demo graphische Veränderungen
fordern auch neue räumliche Lösungen.
Auf diesen Wandel reagieren wir
aktiv und entwickeln in inspirierenden
Begegnungen Lösungen für Städte.
Das gilt für die Menschen, für die wir planen
sowie für alle, die an einem Projekt
beteiligt sind. Es ist dieser wertschätzende
Zugang, den wir als wichtigste Basis
unserer Arbeit sehen – um aktuelle Bedürfnisse
optimal zu berücksichtigen, aber
auch, um verant wortungsvoll in die Zukunft

Wo immer es möglich ist, ziehen wir
Strategien zur Nachverdichtung und Leerstandsnutzung
der Entwicklung von

Bodenversiegelung vor. Die Entwicklung
von Strukturen, die kurze Wege
fördern, ist uns dabei ebenso wichtig wie
der Einsatz von umweltverträglichen,

Krapfen statt Donuts! Um eine Welt mit
Zukunft zu schaffen. Um das vorhandene
Know-how zugänglich zu machen und um
uns methodisch weiterzuentwickeln, hatten
wir seit einiger Zeit eine interne Akademie
ins Leben gerufen, die sich vorwiegend
mit dem Beteiligungshandwerk
beschäftigte. Dort spürten wir verstärkt
die Lust und Liebe am Weiterdenken und
am Übernehmen von Verantwortung –

nonconform: Sie arbeiten viel
zur Bedeutung von Städten. Und
Sie stellen da eine erschreckende
Entwicklung fest, die Städte entscheidend
verändert.
Saskia Sassen: Ich beschäftige
mich vor allem mit den 100
größten Städten der Welt. Und
hier erleben wir derzeit ein „urban
land grabbing“ großen Stils. Denn
nicht nur in den Staaten des
globalen Südens wird Land in
großem Stil aufgekauft, sondern
auch in den großen Städten. Hier
legen die Superreichen Geld an,
weil andere Optionen dafür vorbei
sind. London und New York sind
die dramatischsten Fälle. In Paris
kaufen Kasachstan und China
Immobilien. In Amsterdam kaufen
chinesische Firmen die alten
Grachtenhäuser in großem Stil
auf. Singapur hat große Teile des
ziemlich runtergewirtschafteten
Detroit gekauft. Das ist eine
beunruhigende Entwicklung, weil
sie die Städte aushöhlt und die
Menschen aus der Stadt vertreibt,
nicht nur arme Leute. In London
ist es ein großes Thema, dass
auch der Mittelstand, der durchschnittliche
Universitätsprofessor,
Buchhalter, Rechtsanwalt, aus der
Stadt zieht, weil er sich London
nicht mehr leisten kann.

und Organisationen.

auch viel über die positive, demokratietragende
Kraft der Städte
geschrieben.
Saskia Sassen ist Soziologin
und Wirtschaftswissenschaftlerin.

Wir müssen die Städte als
funktionierende Räume wiedergewinnen.
Mobilität ist dabei entscheidend.
Wenn den Menschen
ermöglicht wird, zu Fuß zu gehen,
auch Kinder zur Schule gehen
können, sind das Mikro-Eingriffe,
die viel Unterschied ausmachen
können. Mich beschäftigen die
Wohngegenden, wo Menschen
mit niedrigem Einkommen leben,
die keine Stimme haben, aber
sehr lebendig sind. Da gibt es
Wissen, das aktiviert werden

Awarded the Styrian Architecture Award 2021, the Graz Museum Schlossberg
by studio WG3 plays with the idea of dissolving spatial boundaries.
The transformative architecture has turned the self-contained former
fortress into an open space and a setting for cultural participation. Walls
that had enclosed the grounds for centuries were opened up; flowing
sequences of interior and exterior spaces that merge into one another,
playful spatial interventions, and communication areas were created. This
volume comprehensively presents this exceptional project, illustrating in
particular the development process and the involvement of various planning
partners.
Additionally, the book presents the three projects awarded honorable
mentions in 2021: the KAI 36 hotel by LAM ARCHITEKTUR STUDIO, the
Leopoldinum—SmartCity primary school by alexa zahn architekten and
the Schneebauer Geschwister buildings ensemble by KUESS Architektur.

For the 75th anniversary of Austria's liberation from the Nazi
regime, teachers and students at the Institute of Architectural
Theory, Art History and Cultural Studies at Graz University of
Technology spent a semester conducting intensive research
on the history of resistance to National Socialism in Styria.
Employing tools of forensic architecture, four selected
case studies—in Deutschlandsberg, Leoben, Eisenerz and
Graz—form the starting point of the extensive research. The
new insights based on the results of the archive inquiries
were presented in an exhibition in public spaces of each
city in the summer of 2020, including 3D visualizations, plan
representations, diagrams and graphs. The publication at
hand documenting the four exhibitions compiles research
and design results, alongside with contributions by relevant
scholars who categorize and contextualize the case studies
within national and international academic discourse.

sind (Gsollstraße 14 und 15). Eine nicht

abschließend erklärbare Diskrepanz zwischen

also die Überlagerung der Luftbildaufnahme dieser direkt neben der Brücke, lagerseitig unterhalb
des Gsollbachs. Im Luftbild fehlt er hingegen
von 1945 mit einem maßstäblichen aktuellen
Orthofoto der GIS Steiermark uns eine Skalierung
ermöglicht hatte, konnten wir im Weiteren zusammen. Zwar ist auf der anderen Seite des
an dieser Stelle; lediglich die Zäune laufen hier
das Lager vermessen und mit den Normmaßen Bachs eine Struktur erkennbar, welche aber nicht
für Baracken aus jener Zeit vergleichen: Bei den mit der Erscheinung der restlichen drei Türme
Häftlingsbaracken in Eisenerz handelt es sich nach auf der historischen Aufnahme übereinstimmen
dieser Auswertung um Normbaracken des Reichsarbeitsdienstes
(RAD). Diese beruhen auf einem
(vgl. den Schattenwurf der drei Türme).
adaptiven Modulbausystem mit einer Grundmodulgröße
von 8,14 m × 3,30 m. In Eisenerz fanden
die Maße von etwa 8,14 m × 26,55 m Anwendung
(Abb. 46). Das ergab zur Zeit der Höchstbelegung
von 469 Häftlingen 1 m2 Bodenfläche pro Häftlinge
(abzüglich der Erschließung). Die Traufenhöhe
lag bei 2,55 m und die Firsthöhe bei 3,35 m. 24
Typischerweise standen die Baracken auf einem
35 cm hohen Klinkersockel. Auch Nebengebäude,
Wasch- und Küchenbaracken waren Normbauten.
Die Funktionen der einzelnen Baukörper
erschlossen sich aus der von Jan Otrębski 1999
angefertigten Skizze. Hinsichtlich der Topologie
der Gebäude erscheint in seiner Zeichnung einzig
die Baracke der SS, außerhalb der Lagerumzäunung
liegend, fälschlicherweise um 90 Grad
gedreht. Dies dürfte damit zu erklären sein, dass
Otrębski aufgrund seines Häftlingsstatus wohl
kaum direkt Zugang zur SS-Baracke hatte und er
sie dadurch am wenigsten kannte. Alle anderen
Gebäude seiner Skizze entsprechen den im Luftbild
erkennbaren Strukturen jedoch sehr genau.
Selbst die benachbarten Wohngebäude, die etwas
weiter in Richtung Eisenerz liegen, zeichnet er
noch schematisch ein und beschriftete sie mit den

die Widerstandsgruppe auf.
Toussaint wurde am 14. September 1943 über
Saarbrücken-Neue Bremm nach Mauthausen
deportiert und am 10. Juni 1944 ins KZ-Außenlager
Eisenerz überstellt. Nach einem halben Jahr
kam er im Januar 1945 zurück ins KZ Mauthausen.
Hier verstarb er am 22. April 1945 (Abb. 26),
wenige Tage vor der Befreiung des Lagers durch
die Alliierten. Am 6. August 1945 wurde Oberleutnant
Toussaint Hardouin posthum mit dem

Languages are constantly transforming as humans interact,
change habits, and ways of doing things. This is not a
radical observation. More intriguing to ponder is whether
languages also transform us and the world in which we
exist. Does it matter what words we use about the world?
Could we, by shaping a language, also shape the world?
Would the world look different if other words had been
used?
This work is about the urban environment, and how it
is transformed by people interacting with the world that
surrounds them by evoking more just living conditions.
It is also an effort to demonstrate how the urban environment
could be imagined in ways that differ from the
neoliberalist view. Other imaginations, arising from different
perspectives on and incentives for development, such
as equity and inclusiveness, might produce another city
entirely. From urban practices in four different contexts in
Sweden, South Africa, India, and Brazil, this book investigates
four dynamics of change: conflicts, commons,
networks, and hybridity. From this framing, new concepts
and radical imaginaries emerge, presented here as a

8-House A highly potentiated assemblage is found in the 8-House
project in Copenhagen - Ørestad. It was built in 2010 as the first new
development of a new urban district at the southern tip on the island of
Amager in front of Kalvebod Fælled nature reserve and Köge Bay behind
it. 27 In the new urban area, which is excellently connected to downtown
Copenhagen, a large and high density was to be achieved in four larger
complexes in order to keep other parts of this area free for green and
water areas. The building designed by the BIG team together with the
landscape architecture firm KLAR with different residential, office and
open space typologies as well as complementary functions (retail, day nursery,
café, community facilities) resembles a perimeter block development
conceived in the shape of an eight, with a wide public traverse running
through its constricted centre as a connection to and between the urban
spaces to the west and east. This formation creates two inner areas, which
were designed individually by the landscape architecture firm KLAR. In
the south, lawns create a geometrically curved stepped relief. A children‘s
playground was later integrated. In the north courtyard, round mounds of
lawn intersected by curved paths and surfaces form areas for free use.
Two plaza situations were also formed. One of them with a café faces the
water, where the building was lowered to one storey to allow the southern
sun and the view into the rooms and courtyards. A second square is oriented

The structural manifestations of digital data usually remain shrouded in
secrecy. Katharina J. Neubauer has visited all of Google and Facebook’s
data centers in Europe, and here presents an architectural and spatial
discussion of these buildings. Directly confronting the structures draws
our attention to their existence, their size and—simultaneously—their
inconspicuousness. They are buildings of enormous societal importance
that are not intended to be viewed or understood; yet the author has
done so here, and recorded them through photographs and drawings.

Raum wird nicht nur visuell, sondern mit allen Sinnen erlebt. Dennoch
werden in Entwurf und Rezeption von Architektur haptische, akustische
und osmische Wahrnehmungen oft kaum berücksichtigt. Dementsprechend
gibt es in der Architekturdisziplin keinen kontinuierlichen Diskurs
zum Thema Raumwahrnehmung. GAM.13 Spatial Expeditions möchte
diese Lücke schließen. Die Methode der Expedition ermöglicht dabei
einen experimentellen Umgang und bietet die Chance, neue Erkenntnisse
und Sichtweisen auf den gebauten Raum zu gewinnen. Dabei werden
Techniken der Wahrnehmung aus Architektur, bildender Kunst, Musik,
Tanz und anderen artverwandten Disziplinen erprobt. GAM.13 stellt
damit selbst eine Expedition zu experimenteller Architektur und den
unerforschten Aspekten des gebauten Raumes dar.

Space is experienced not only visually, but with all the senses. Despite this,
the design and reception of architecture often barely take haptic, acoustic,
and osmic perceptions into account. Consequently, in the architecture discipline
there is no continuous discourse on the topic of spatial perception.
GAM.13 Spatial Expeditions seeks to fill this gap. The method of the expedition
enables an experimental approach and provides the opportunity to
gain new insights and perspectives with regard to built space. It explores
perceptual techniques from the fields of architecture, the visual arts, music,
dance, and other related disciplines. GAM.13 therefore represents an expedition
into experimental architecture and the unexplored aspects of built space.

GAM.16 gewohnt: un/common stellt den vorherrschenden Grundrisstypologien
des standardisierten, neoliberalen Wohnungsmarkts ungewöhnliche
Modelle gemeinschaftlichen Wohnens gegenüber. Statt leistbaren
Wohnraum über die ständige Minimierung von Wohnflächen aufrecht
zu erhalten, schlägt GAM.16 ein zusätzliches Angebot an Raum vor, den
man sich teilt, in dem die ursprüngliche (räumliche) Einheit von Wohnungen
geöffnet und erweitert wird, um andere Funktionen oder Personen
aufzunehmen. GAM.16 plädiert für mehr Kommunalität und untersucht
kollaborative und koproduktive Wohnkonzepte, die leistbaren und attraktiven
Wohnraum für unterschiedliche Lebenssituationen schaffen und als
„Probebühnen“ gemeinschaftlichen Wohnens dieses Thema (wieder) auf

GAM.16 gewohnt: un/common juxtaposes the prevalent floor-plan
typologies of the standardized, neoliberal housing market with unconventional
models of community living. Instead of preserving affordable living
space by perpetually minimizing residential spaces, GAM.16 proposes the
creation of additional areas to be shared—by opening and expanding the
original (spatial) apartment unit to embrace other functions or persons.
GAM.16 advocates more communal spirit and examines collaborative and
co-productive housing concepts which create affordable and attractive living
space for different life situations—housing concepts as “experimental
stages“ for communal living that (re)establish this theme as an aspiration
of architecture.

Das neue Denken des Materials Holz als hochmoderner und veränderlicher
Baustoff der Zukunft hat gerade erst begonnen. Eingebunden in
umweltschonende Ressourcenkreisläufe zeigt sich seine Innovationskraft,
wenn es als Material Bestandteil neuer technologischer Entwicklungen
und hybrider Verwendungen wird, die aktuellen und komplexen architektonischen
Aufgaben gewachsen sind. GAM.17 nimmt Holz in seiner Vielschichtigkeit
und seinem architektonischen Potenzial neu in den Blick und
stellt dabei konstruktive und gestalterische Konzepte vor, die die Möglichkeiten
des Materials für eine klimafreundlichere Bauwirtschaft ausloten.
Ergänzt wird dies durch einen Rückblick in die Geschichte des Holzbaus

in Architectural Education
We have only just started reimagining wood as a cutting-edge, versatile
building material of the future. A component of environmentally friendly
resource cycles, wood demonstrates its innovative potential when used in
new technological developments and hybrid applications that are suited to
complex, modern architectural tasks. GAM.17 takes a new look at wood—at
its multi-faceted nature and architectural possibilities—and proposes building
and design concepts that fully utilize the material’s potential for a more
climate-friendly construction industry. This is further complemented by
a look back at the history of building with wood and the ideological entanglements
that have long stood in the way of the further development
of wood as a building material.
New and cutting-edge forms of pedagogy such as distance learning,
design-build, collaborative learning, and peer-to-peer practices are
increasingly calling conventional teaching and learning environments,

lecture series; and Acting in Public was their first book. For over twenty years, the architecture collective raumlaborberlin
has been searching for new spaces of encounter and for ways of achieving cooperative urban development.

Philipp Oswalt has been Professor of Architectural Theory and
Design at the University of Kassel since 2006. From 1988 to 1994,
he was editor of the architecture magazine ARCH+ and worked for
OMA / Rem Koolhaas in 1996/97. From 2009 to 2014, he served as
director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
George Arbid is an architect with successive teaching positions
at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts, the American University
of Beirut, and the Lebanese University. He is the co-founder and
director of the Arab Center for Architecture and has served on
several competition and award juries.

Vanessa Carlow is a licensed architect and urban planner. She
has lectured at universities worldwide, including Cornell University
New York and Tongji University Shanghai. Since 2012 she is
professor and head of the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism (ISU)
at Technische Universität Braunschweig.
Grace Abou Jaoude is a research associate since 2018 and is
currently pursuing her PhD at the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism
(ISU). Prior to joining ISU, she worked at Het Nieuwe Instituut,
Netherlands and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research.
Chantal Karadag completed her Master studies at Technische
Universität Braunschweig. Joining the Institute for Sustainable
Urbanism (ISU) research team she works on future-oriented
sustainability concepts for diverse urban and sub-urban areas and
post-digital participation.
Olaf Mumm has over fifteen years of experience at the interface
between urban planning and design in praxis and research. In
2014 Olaf joined the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism (ISU)
at Technische Universität Braunschweig, where he is a senior
researcher and since 2018 deputy head of ISU.
Marie Scheer studied architecture in Lübeck, Oldenburg and
Braunschweig. After completing her master's degree in 2019,
she joined the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism (ISU) team for
teaching and research.
Kristin Schöning studied architecture at the RWTH Aachen, the
Technical University of Budapest and the Technische Universität
Braunschweig. In 2020 Kristin joined the Institute for Sustainable
Urbanism (ISU) for teaching and research.

Alexander Bonte is a member of the management team at Max
Dudler, and has been responsible for numerous building projects,
exhibitions and publications as project manager, curator and editor.
Max Dudler founded the Max Dudler firm in 1992, which now has
branches in Berlin, Zürich, Frankfurt am Main, and Munich. In 2004,
Dudler was appointed professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

baukind is passionate about building for social change that
benefits children, seniors, parents, and single people. The office
aims to create spaces that mix different living concepts, human
