Margaret Mahy’s former home
expected to change hands today
NEWS 3
THE FORMER family home
of Margaret Mahy, the prolific
author of books for children and
young adults, is set to change
hands today.
Mahy, who died in 2012 aged
76, had lived in the three-bedroom
house in Governors Bay
since 1968, where she raised
her two daughters, Penny and
Bridget.
The property at 23 Merlincote
Cres was originally listed for sale
in May but failed to sell after a
community-based bid to purchase
it proved unsuccessful.
It was relisted by Min Sarginson
Real Estate with a deadline
sale to be completed by 5pm.
“There’s been a great amount
of interest. The first open home
had close to 70 people and it’s
been steady ever since,” said Min
Sarginson real estate agent Kate
Hitchings.
Originally designed as a
colonial cottage with modernist
elements, a larger wing was added
in the 1970s.
It features three or four
bedrooms, depending on configuration,
and sits on a 758 sq m
section overlooking the bay.
The property’s latest
rateable valuation was $640,000
on August 1, 2019.
In keeping with Mahy’s passion
for books, the house has a
number of in-built bookshelves.
She owned hundreds of books
that were stacked along 170
lineal metres of shelving.
“It’s probably a little bit excessive
for most families these
days but when we grew up in the
house basically every wall was
covered in books,” said Mahy’s
eldest daughter Penny.
COLONIAL:
In-built
bookshelves
are a feature
of the
Governors
Bay home
formerly
owned by
Margaret
Mahy (inset).
Bin vandalised
ONE OF the recently-installed
smart bins at Sumner Beach
has been ripped out from its
mountings and pushed over.
The city council replaced hundreds
of old rubbish bins across
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula
with ‘smart bins’.
Smart bins have a larger capacity
and sensor technology which
provides the city council’s maintenance
contractor with daily data
on how full each bin is.
“It is so incredibly
disappointing to see such
mindless vandalism occurring for
absolutely no reason. At the end
of the day it’s the ratepayers who
pays the price for this stupidity,”
said Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member
Darrell Latham.
Teaching kids the ‘bread and butter’ of
• By Kristie Boland
BRENDAN NOLAN was
watching his 5-year-old son
reading last year when he had a
realisation: Wouldn’t it be good if
more kids this age were reading
instead of playing PlayStation?
So he created the coaching
programme ‘Bread and Butter’,
which he’s now looking to expand
into other rugby and sports
clubs in Canterbury.
‘Bread and Butter’ uses sport
and the B.R.E.A.D book to
encourage kids to read, connect,
and learn the basic principles
of being a good person. The
B.R.E.A.D book stands for: Balls
Books; Read; Enjoy; Achieve;
Dreams.
Nolan, who works for the Lyttelton
Port Company, coaches the
under-6 Christchurch rugby team
‘C Pups’.
What began as having the
team read for 15 minutes before
training morphed into a new
way of coaching, connecting and
teaching kids some important life
lessons.
With Bread and Butter, Nolan
endeavours to go beyond just
coaching rugby skills. It’s about
teaching kids the foundations of
being a good person – the ‘bread
and butter’ of life.
The C Pups, who all attend
Heathcote Valley School, spend
15 minutes before training
reading a book of their choice
with their parents and
caregivers.
After every game, the player
of the day is presented with the
B.R.E.A.D book, which they can
take home and write a story in it
about their experiences of rugby
so far. They present it to the team
the following week and then pass
the book onto the next player of
the day.
“It’s something that keeps them
involved longer than say just half
an hour after the game, something
to be proud of,” Nolan,
who played professional rugby in
England, said.
Bread and Butter is not just for
rugby.
“It’s just the principles of being
good people. In rugby, they say
good people make good rugby
AVID: The C Pups under-6
team reading the B.R.E.A.D
book together, and their
coach Brendan Nolan.
Nolan also coaches the
Christchurch seniors, the
seniors sevens and Waitaha
Matua, the Canterbury
Maori men’s team.
players. But don’t wait until
they’re 20, why don’t we start
putting this to the kids when
they’re young.”
“If they get their bread and
butter right, they can go from
there. It’s giving them the
opportunity from a young age.”
Black is back.
life by combining rugby with reading
THE C PUPS: Charlie St John (left), Mason Boyd, Odin Hanekom, Hoani
Nolan, Leo Anderson and Edward Hanekom. Before training sessions, both
children and parents spend 15 minutes reading.
The programme isn’t just
for the kids – it also connects
parents and caregivers.
Jenna Timoti’s six year-old
son Mason Boyd has played two
seasons for the C Pups. Timoti
said Mason is a very capable
reader, but getting him to read
was a chore. Bread and Butter
helped Mason see reading as
something that’s just part of
training.
Timoti said she has seen a
difference in her son’s behaviour
since he has been coached by
Nolan.
“Mason is someone who is
easily distracted and needs
structure. I can see a difference
in his confidence, he’s so
determined and the values he
has learned have made him
more empathetic. He’s a lot more
caring,” she said.
Similarly, Heathcote Valley
School principal Bruce Ellison
said he has seen a change in
the kids since they have been
coached by Nolan.
“I’ve seen them grow as
people and I’ve seen their
relationships with each other
grow,” said Ellison.
“It’s a no brainer, why haven’t
we been doing something like
this all along?”
Nolan said a programme like
this would have made him look
at rugby differently.
“When I was playing, it was
just about showing up and
playing the game, but I think this
is more of a deeper connection.”
Nolan wants that connection
to be fostered.
“It teaches kids to care for the
area, the grounds, care for the
opposition and each other. It’s
contagious and its something
that needs to be nurtured,” he
said.
Nolan wants to break down
the club versus club mentality,
and connect coaches as well.
Mainland Football interim
chief executive Martin Dodgson
loves the idea of Bread and
Butter and believes most sports
face the same challenges.
“We love the concept and the
story behind it . . . The concept of
giving kids ownership over what
they do,” he said.
Dodgson thinks Bread and
Butter captures the essence of
sport.
“Sport teaches us lessons and
those lessons can be hidden
deep but [Brendan] brings these
lessons to the surface,” he said.
“The scoreboard would suggest
who the winner or loser is, but
this teaches kids what a real
‘winner’ is and what success
looks like.”
Nolan now hopes to take
the coaching programme
Canterbury-wide and has had
positive feedback from clubs and
other sports organisations.
Five artists combine for our new group exhibition ‘Sum of the Parts’
November 27 - December 14; on show for a shorter duration to allow
for all-important Christmas pickup opportunities.
Contributing artists are Christchurch Kara Burrowes and local Little
River sculptor Jane Downes. Jasmine Keir’s studio is in Kerikeri, just up
the road from Dave Green in Rawene, and Debra Powell is from the
rural Waikato hamlet of Te Pahu.
Kara Burrowes is an artist and designer based in Christchurch. Her work
is tactile and experimental. Using recycled wood from demolition sites, she loves
the concept of transforming something quite ordinary into something precious and
alluring. “Through reinterpretation I like to create a new language, often through the
use of pattern and repetition, method and process.”
Debra Powell’s alias in the pottery studio is ‘Little Betty’. Her ceramic work has
strong narrative themes, exploring relationships between people and nature, playing
with convention, and infusing the result with a gentle humour.
Oxidized copper artist Jasmine Keir endeavours to create and understand the
alchemy of colours achievable via her artistic process; one which uses a variety of
natural ingredients to react with and manipulate the finish of her copper works.
Dave Green creates whimsical arrangements; ‘Lightshifter’ sculptures. His art is about changing the form
and shape of found, often discarded, objects - both natural and manmade. Reborn out of pre-loved glass
and crystal, some are lighting devices others are designed to hang in the light.
Sculptor Jane Downes’ delicate themes are fabricated in steel. ‘Arboresque’ a study of tree forms, an
observation of nature’s sacred geometry.”
Epic fundraising run for teenager Enzo
• By Kristie Boland
ANTHONY MARTIN’S 100km
run in Diamond Harbour took
him more than 23 hours to
complete, and at the end of it all
he wanted was a cup of Irish tea.
On Canterbury
Anniversary
Day,
Anthony Martin
ran 100km
with a 3600m
elevation to
raise money
for a Redcliffs
Anthony
Martin
teenager who
suffered a spinal
injury in
early 2020.
Enzo Halliburton, now 18, was
involved in a tragic swimming
accident in Moncks Bay in
January, 2020. While swimming
with friends, Enzo dived into the
water and did not resurface. He
had seriously injured his spine
and his friends had to perform
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
and call for an ambulance.
Enzo suffered a C5-C7 spinal
injury and is now a tetraplegic.
Martin has a work colleague
whose son was with Enzo that
day. After hearing Enzo’s story,
ENDURANCE: Anthony Martin during his 100km run in Diamond Harbour.
Martin decided he wanted to do
something to help raise money
to go towards a specialised bike
for Enzo.
This was the first ultra-marathon
distance Martin had
ran. During training, Martin
had what he described as a
“drawback” when he ruptured
his hamstring in two places,
tore the cartilage in his hip and
had to get his Achilles tendon
reattached.
On the day of the run,
Martin joined in on part of the
Krayzie K’s ultra trail running
event. The temperature that day
was 27 deg C.
“Being an Irish lad, I’m not
built for heat,” said Martin.
The 100km run took him 23hr
38min. Thinking about Enzo
and what he had gone through is
what got Martin through those
Enzo Halliburton
last hours.
“Even in the worst pain that
I was in, it’s still a drop in the
ocean of the reality of being
tetraplegic,” he said.
When he finally crossed the
finish line at 8.25am on Saturday
morning, there was one thing on
Martin’s mind: “All I wanted was
a cup of tea, there was no tea [at
the finish line] so I drove to my
mates and he had some Irish tea
bags, it was perfect.”
Takapūneke Reserve landscaping under way
LANDSCAPING WORK is
starting on a part of Banks
Peninsula notable for a massacre
in 1830. It is part of a two-stage
plan to reinvigorate Takapūneke
Reserve near Akaroa.
Last year, the city council
bought the Red House sited on
the reserve for $2.5 million as
part of its redevelopment plans,
which it is jointly undertaking
with Ōnuku Rūnanga.
In 1830, the feared Ngai Toa
chief Te Rauparaha, who was
on a raiding journey from
the North Island, arrived
off the Takapūneke site. The
Takapūneke rangatira (chief)
was lured onto a British ship and
killed by Te Rauparaha, who
then slaughtered many at the
once-thriving Ngāi Tahu commercial
centre, after which the
site became tapu (sacred).
Takapūneke has been used as a
rubbish dump and a wastewater
treatment plant in the past.
It achieved recognition of its
significance in the history of the
nation as a whole in 2002.
Ōnuku was the first of the
three locations in the South
Island where The Treaty of
Waitangi was signed – the others
being Ōtakou and Ruapuke.
Stage one of the redevelopment
will be undertaken in two
parts.
The first part will involve
terracing and the creation of
a flat platform area for a pou
(pillar), along with paths in
the form of a takarangi, an
intersecting double spiral. The
pou is being designed and
created by renowned Ngāi Tahu
carver Fayne Robinson.
Part one will be completed in
time for a formal opening on 5
February 2022, hosted by Ōnuku
Rūnanga.
Part two will see feature
lighting installed for the pou
along with planting, furniture
DESIGN:
The plan
includes
terracing
and paths
in the
form of a
takarangi
or double
spiral.
and palisade fencing, and an area
for hand washing at the Stanley
Place entrance.
It is expected part two will be
completed before the inaugural
Matariki public holiday in June.
Ōnuku Rūnanga chairman
Riki Tainui said this is an
important step forward in
helping to tell the real story
of Takapūneke.
“This piece of land carries huge
significance for our rūnanga. We
want people to know its story
and its history and provide a
place for peaceful reflection,”
Tainui said.
Deputy Mayor and Banks
Peninsula Councillor Andrew
Turner welcomed news of work
beginning.
“Council and Ōnuku Rūnanga
have worked closely to develop
this landscape plan and we are
all extremely pleased to have
reached a stage where we can
start to see the plan come to
fruition,” Turner said.
In 2002, the reserve was
registered as wāhi tapu (a place
of outstanding historical and
cultural heritage values).

THIS FESTIVE season,
Ray White will continue its
successful charity drive A Little
Ray of Giving for the 10th year
running.
The campaign is a tradition
for the brand, and serves as an
opportunity for hundreds of
local branches to connect with
their communities while
raising awareness and
much-needed resources
for worthy causes.
As a charitable
initiative, the campaign
will see Ray White
Ferrymead partner with
Ronald McDonald House
South Island to help
people, families and groups who
may need some extra support
and care during the festive
season.
“This campaign has always
been a real highlight of our year.
It gives us a chance to reach out
to the people around us directly
in a way that benefits people
with less advantages, and get
them things they need during
a demanding time of year,” Ray
White Ferrymead principal
Craig Prier said.
The Ray White Ferrymead
team is calling on people
to show their generosity by
sending their donations to the
company for collection and safe
storage.
“Both 2021 and 2020 have
been extremely difficult for
everyone but no one’s felt the
negatives more than those
groups that were already
vulnerable. Lots of people
and families have even found
themselves in a bad position
because of the way things have
gone recently. So this year’s A
Little Ray of Giving is
especially important to
us, and it’s going to be a
good way to let people
in need of help know
that their community
supports them,” Prier
said.
Those who wish to
donate a gift just need
to inform the Ray White team
if the gift is for a male or female
and nominate an age group.
Ray White Ferrymead, 21
Humphreys Drive, Ferrymead,
will have its special giving tree
in the front window and will
be collecting gifts until December
5.
The gifts are safely stored on
the premises and are collected
by Ronald McDonald House
South Island. Ray White has run
this initiative since 2012, and
every year, offices from across
Australia and New Zealand
have collected thousands of gifts
and donations for not-for-profit
organisations and charities
Over the past five years there has
been an increase in shellfish collecting
along the McCormacks Bay
causeway in the estuary of the Avon
and Heathcote. This has led to public
concern about the potential decline
and sustainability of cockles.
Following discussions with the
Ministry for Primary Industries and
mana whenua, the Estuary Trust
agreed to undertake an evaluation of
the cockle throughout the estuary.
Since the last evaluation in 2008/9
there have been significant changes
within the estuary. Firstly, the
building of the ocean pipeline has
removed a significant proportion of
treated waste water from the estuary.
This has resulted in a dramatic
decrease in nutrient levels and an
improvement in water quality.
Secondly, there have been considerable
changes as a result of seismic
disturbances during the 2010/11
earthquake sequences.
There is potential for the shellfish
resources to increase in the future.
The findings from the survey will
be used by mana whenua when
applying for Mātaitai Reserve status
for the estuary.
This will allow mana whenua to
create bylaws to minimise the risks
of overfishing and better manage
the aquatic resources.
PUBLIC CONSULTATION proposed changes to speed limits
SH73/75 Christchurch to Akaroa and SH74 Lyttelton
In the last decade there were 739 crashes on the road between Christchurch and Akaroa*.
Nine people were killed and 72 people suffered serious injuries, leaving families and
communities grieving.
Setting safer speeds on this high-risk corridor is essential if we are to turn the tide of deaths
and serious injury. Because even the best drivers, on familiar roads, make mistakes - but these
mistakes don’t need to cost lives.
Consultation is now underway on proposed new safer speeds between Christchurch and
Akaroa, some local side roads and in Lyttelton.
2021
Head to www.nzta.govt.nz/chchtoakaroa to give feedback
or email us at chchtoakaroaspeeds@nzta.govt.nz
Formal consultation on new speed limit proposals is required under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits
(2017). *Between 2011-2020, data from CAS.

Treasures from the past:
The Great Fire of Lyttelton
IN 1870, the catastrophic Great
Fire of Lyttelton razed much
of the town centre, in spite of
the heroic efforts of the town’s
‘hook and ladder’ brigade, gaol
inmates and random seamen,
who doused the Mitre Hotel
with buckets of beer – all
followed later with the arrival of
the Christchurch Fire Brigade by
train.
Spurred on by the reputed
£80,000 damage, the Lyttelton
Borough Council’s Fire Brigade
Committee established the
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
just three years later in 1873,
complete with excellent new £1
uniforms and boots. However,
it would be another 27 years
before the brigade would find a
permanent home.
In 1901, the council decided
to invest in a new fire station
to house its modern steampowered
engines, with plans
commissioned by the prestigious
Christchurch architects,
Armson, Collins and Harman.
The firm were responsible for
notable colonial landmarks, such
as the Union Bank on Hereford
St, the Rhodes mansion ‘Te
Koraha’ in Merivale and St
Mary’s Anglican Church in
Timaru. In 1887, it had also
designed the Lyttelton Borough
Council Chambers
and Magistrates Court at 1
Sumner Rd on the corner
of Oxford St.
The Lyttelton Fire Station
was then built on the opposite
corner at 2 Sumner Rd in a
similar grand Italianate style to
GRAND:
Lyttelton Fire
Station (plus
library), April
16, 1964. The
library was in
this building
from 1902 to
1978, while
the lower
level housed
the fire
station from
1902 to 1967.
complement the borough
council chambers, with
construction completed in 1902.
After having resided for some
35 years in the old Colonists Hall
just up the street, Canterbury’s
oldest library, the Lyttelton
Library, moved into the new fire
station building some months
after the fire brigade, occupying
the upper floors.
For almost seven decades
the fire station (plus library)
building was a vibrant social
centre for the town until, in
1967, the Lyttelton Volunteer
Fire Brigade was forced to move
to a new fire station on London
St due to its brand new fire
engines being too large for the
old basement.
The library followed a decade
later in 1978, moving just across
the road to the old borough
council chambers.
For over a century, these two
fine buildings – the original fire
station (plus library) and the
borough council chambers –
stood sentinel at the Sumner Rd
main entrance to the town.
In its later years the old fire
station was also known to locals
as the Stanaway’s building,
where Brent and Ann lived until
their home was demolished
following the 2011 earthquakes.
A sad reminder of Lyttelton’s
recent past, the historic corner
remains an empty lot.

We are proud to celebrate our first year of Home Christchurch operating in your community. We
want to thank all of our clients, friends, neighbors and locals for embracing our vision and
experiencing a fresh approach to real estate.
After being in the corporate world for many years, Eddie & Kieren decided to break away and
change the perception of real estate agents as we know it. Our goal from the very beginning has
been to be the most relatable, genuine home specialists in our chosen communities. It’s where
we work, what we know and a place we love to call HOME.
When we sell a HOME we are not just selling bricks and mortar, we are selling a lifestyle and a
community that most will envy. The ocean, estuary, walking tracks and recreation options in the
coastal suburbs are something we all value here at HOME and we love to be able to share this
with new buyers.
Our bespoke and transparent approach to real estate empowers us to do things differently. To do
Shops bursting with
festive gift ideas
The countdown to the big day is well underway, so making up the
Christmas gift list will now be a top priority… if you haven’t already done so.
Finding those special gifts and stocking fillers as
well as the Christmas treats for the table is so easy at
our city’s malls and shopping centres, where the shops
are bursting with festive merchandise.
Every woman likes to receive body pampering
gifts, and there is a huge selection of these priced
to suit all budgets at the many pharmacies and gift
shops around the city. Perfume is another favourite
and again there is a wide selection to choose from,
ranging from exciting new releases to the well-known
fragrances that have stood the test of time. Lingerie,
jewellery, fashion accessories, homewares and decor
items – there’s no end to the ideas for the women on
the list.
The men are equally well catered for, from the
sophisticated metro-male boyfriends, to the car-crazy
brothers and the DIY enthusiast and keen gardener
husbands and dads. Choose from clothing, books,
tools, personal grooming items and gadgets to put a
smile on their face on Christmas morning.
Speaking of smiles, nothing gives families more joy
than seeing the excitement of the children opening
their presents. Whether they are delivered by Santa
or snuck under the tree by mum and dad, the cuddly
toys, games, dolls and building blocks, the candy
canes, toy trucks and pretty dresses currently filling
the shops will bring squeals of sheer happiness from
the smallest family members.
The tweens and teens usually have their own ideas
about what they want for Christmas, so the gift cards
offered by a wide range of retailers are the perfect way
to please.
Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!
We are open
Chantilly
Cream
You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.
Aggressive look for new Outlander
THERE IS NO doubt Mitsubishi
make particularly good cars,
they also make particularly good
television advertisements.
One I find quite entertaining is
that for the outgoing Outlander, it
demonstrates the amount of space
inside the mid-size sport utility
vehicle and includes my favourite
segment, Monty the white persian
cat getting a short shrift from
sleeping comfortably inside the car.
Mitsubishi had a successful
Outlander runout and it has
been replaced with a new
generation model, although the
concept of old has been very much
maintained.
The newcomer has a fresh
exterior design, it is squared-off
up front with an aggressive grille,
bumper and bold headlight shrouds.
There’s also a new driveline,
well, there is a new engine, the
2.5-litre petrol unit is coupled to
continuously variable transmission
that Mitsubishi has utilised to
good effect for many years now in
the Outlander and other models.
As before, the Outlander is also
available in three front and three
four-wheel-drive variants.
The six-model range starts at
$41,990 for the 2WD LS and ends
at $54,990 for the seven-seat 4WD
VRX, which is the subject of this
evaluation.
Like most car builders these
days Mitsubishi isn’t immune from
manufacturing and supply issues
due to an ever-increasing global
shortage of microchips and semiconductors,
and depending on the
time of purchase that could well
determine specification inclusions.
However, Mitsubishi are
reasonably well placed and the new
Outlander in VRX form is highly
specced. Major items include full
leather trim with heated seats
up front and in the second row,
electric seat adjustment, headup
display, Bose audio, electric
panoramic sunroof, kick-motion
tailgate, wireless smartphone
charging, triple-zone climate
control and satellite navigation that
sits in a large and comprehensive
central touch screen.
It was a bit of a surprise to learn
there was a completely new engine
for Outlander. The old 2.4-litre
unit served the Outlander well
and was a real honey in terms of
how it operated. Nevertheless,
the new engine picks up the
same fundamentals, it is quiet,
has efficiency and is relatively
powerful. It has power outputs of
135kW and 245Nm, up 9kW and
21Nm respectively from the old.
The 2488cc unit is also listed with
an 8.1l/100km combined cycle
average.
That’s quite good for a big
petrol-powered SUV and they
VERSATILE: Twenty-inch wheels on the Outlander help
raise ground clearance and offer off-road flexibility.
MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER VRX: Bold front end and new engine for latest generation model.
are figures I would rate as
being achievable under perfect
conditions. During my evaluation
time, the readout was constantly
sitting around 9l/100km. That
included a lot of inner-city driving
and my usual highway run. At
100km/h the engine is loping over
gently at 1500rpm, returning an
instantaneous figure of 4.8l/100km.
On the subject of figures, the
Outlander will accelerate from a
standstill to 100km/h in 9sec and
will complete a highway overtake
(80-120km/h) in 5.8sec.
The engine works fluidly through
the transmission, that’s one of
the benefits of CVT, it allows the
engine to work freely and, as such,
is highly responsive, it isn’t flighty
but it works the entire rev band
willingly. The driver has the use of
a paddle-shift gearing selector, it
will lock the transmission into one
of eight steps, which is useful for
travelling on hill roads and many
other applications.
There’s also an economical mode
that dulls the throttle response in
the interests of saving fuel use.
Mitsubishi builds great fourwheel-drive
systems, and the new
Outlander has the benefit of years
of development through previous
generation models and the likes
of Lancer Evolution, Triton
and Pajero models. The Super
All-Wheel-Control system has
many driver-selectable functions
• Price – Mitsubishi
Outlander VRX 4WD,
$54,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4710mm; width, 1862mm;
height, 1748mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2488cc, 135kW, 245Nm,
eight-step continuously
variable automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9sec
• Fuel usage – 8.1/100km
through a centre console dial. The
evaluation car had only travelled
400km when I picked it up, so I
wasn’t prepared to drive crosscountry,
but I did tackle a short offthe-seal
road near Hororata, and
could certainly feel drive kicking in
through all four corners.
The Hororata River was merely
a dribble as I drove through the
rocky river floor, it was a good
test of suspension control, the
four-strut system soaking up
well the uneven surface. That’s
another Outlander credential, it
is occupant-friendly with wellcushioned
underpinnings.
That would also be a hard
equation to get right, the
newcomer sits on low profile 20in
Bridgestone tyres (255/45), yet ride
comfort hasn’t been jeopardised,
the suspension has absorption
and with supple seating the new
Outlander is comfortable and
relaxing to drive.
With those big tyres there
is also much feedback at the
steering wheel and positive
corner turn-in, accuracy is
precise. Getting a big SUV to
steer well is a big ask for the
suspension engineers, but
I’m pleased to report the new
Outlander has control and a
deliberate handling quality.
When pushed into some corner
challenges it feels rigid and stable,
the high-quality tyres dealing to
everything asked of them.
More than anything the new
Outlander is the useful wagon we
have come to know and appreciate
the model for. It, too, has the space
inside that Mitsubishi has marketed
well in previous generation models.
Occupants seated in the rear row
should be thankful, it’s really just
an area for children or small adults,
yet it doesn’t feel confined back
there and getting in and out isn’t
too onerous.
The new Outlander has a certain
finesse, especially in VRX form,
it is plush and incredibly well
appointed, I’m sure Monty would
approve.
I can’t wait to see Mitsubishi’s
promotional material for the
newcomer, the advertising agency
has a hard act to follow.
