RMF Assumes Haage and Smith Scholarships
from Reading Music Teachers Association
The Reading Musical Foundation has
assumed from the Reading Music Teachers
Association (“RMTA”) the administration of
two substantial music scholarships for collegebound
students who reside in Berks County
and study with a member of RMTA at the time
of application. They are the Haage and Smith
Memorial Scholarships. Both are payable for one
year, in two installments, and are nonrenewable.
The genesis of the George D. Haage Memorial
Scholarship was a pledge by George D.
Haage (1875-1966) in 1962 to contribute one
scholarship of $500 in each of three successive
years to students of RMTA members who
committed to study music in college or a
conservatory and to a career in music. In 1966,
RMTA sponsored its first “PianoFest” in the
Albright College Field House to raise funds for
the program. Other RMTA-sponsored ensembles
followed for the same purpose. The commitments
Dr. Haage imposed have since been relaxed. A
recipient must study voice, piano, or an orchestral
instrument privately in college, or major or minor
in music, to receive the award.
Helen Matz Smith (1909-1999) established
Millie Eben, Treasurer, and Keri Houp, First Vice
President, of the Reading Music Teachers Association.
Keri is one of Millie’s former piano students.
the Smith Memorial
Scholarship in her
Will. The winner must
major in music at a
college, university, or
conservatory. Mrs.
Smith received her
musical training at
The Juilliard School in
New York. She taught
piano, organ, and voice
privately until 1988 George D. Haage
and was a member, and
later an honorary member, of RMTA. She served
as treasurer of the prestigious American Guild
of Organists and as organist for as many as 22
churches during her career, including St. Daniel’s
Lutheran Church in Heidelberg Township and
First Baptist Church, Reading, from which
she retired in 1970. Her generosity to RMTA’s
students was a “complete surprise” to RMTA,
according to Grace Mease, a former president of
the organization.
Dr. Haage’s long, fruitful career in music had
many facets. A native of Berks County and
graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Dresden,
Germany, Dr. Haage served as organist at St.
Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Reading for
50 years, missing only one Sunday service during
his entire career. In 1907, he inaugurated the
“Haage Concert Series” that brought to Reading
some of the finest musical talent in the world
for a period of 55 years under his supervision.
Albright College awarded him an Honorary
Doctorate of Humanities in 1956.
Dr. Haage founded RMTA, then known as the
“Music Teachers of Reading,” on September 13,
1926, coincidentally within a few weeks of RMF’s
organization in the Chamber of Commerce
Rooms in Reading. He served as RMTA’s
president from the time of its creation until 1964,
when he was succeeded in that role by
Miriam Weiss Heisler. In 1957 and again in

1961, Dr. Haage brought the Pennsylvania Music
Teachers Association, established in 1949, to
Reading for its annual meeting.
The Haage and Smith Memorial Scholarships
will join nearly four dozen scholarship programs
now administered by RMF. The Foundation
administers two rounds of auditions in the spring,
typically early in both March and April, the first
primarily for pre-college music scholarships and
the latter for college awards. The deadline for
receiving applications, the audition requirements,
and the procedures applicable to RMF’s college
music scholarships generally, will apply to the two
new programs as well.
Millie Eben was instrumental in having both
scholarships assumed by RMF. A private teacher
of piano, Ms. Eben is a former president of
both RMTA and its parent, the Pennsylvania
Music Teachers Association, and has served on
RMF’s Scholarship Committee for many years.
It was she who first recognized the practicality
of awarding scholarships on financial need and
encouraged RMF to accept its first need-sensitive
scholarship program, now part of the Work
Family Woodwind Program, in December 2003.
Ms. Eben recognized the efficiency in having
RMF administer both the Haage and Smith
programs, thereby boosting the awards to
students by saving duplicate expenses to hire
judges, invest the underlying scholarship funds,
and administer the awards. All of that will now
be assumed by RMF, the county’s largest provider
of music scholarships on merit and financial need.
to participate in a percussion day camp as part of the Colonial Oaks Foundation
world percussion, classical percussion, marching percussion, and concert percussion.
RMF Awards Over $7,000
Recognizing Teamwork and Excellence in Music
At no cost to Berks County School Districts, the Reading Musical Foundation invited
each district and its music faculty to participate in an awards program designed to reward
outstanding student leadership in music education for the past two years. Providing 80 years
of service in Berks County, the Foundation looks for opportunities to build bridges with public school
and private music teachers in efforts to enhance music education and experience in our county. For
that purpose, the Foundation established four separate programs of annual awards to recognize student
musicians who best exemplify RMF’s mission.
CRITERIA
RMF Esprit de Corps Award ($100) - Students Exiting Middle School
This award is given each spring to one student graduating from each of Berks County’s middle schools
who best exemplifies RMF’s updated mission. The student should be a superb role model for other
musicians and aspire toward high standards in musical performance or composition. Ensemble, or
“team-playing,” is as important as personal virtuosity or technical skill. Throughout the student’s tenure
in middle school, it will have been obvious to the music faculty that the student values giving something
back to other students and/or to the community.
RMF Outstanding High School Musician Award ($100) - Graduating Seniors
Similar to the Esprit de Corps Award, this award has the same criteria but is for graduating seniors.
RMF Accompanist Award ($100) - High School Students
Reliable, skillful keyboard accompanists are essential to nearly all high school music and theater
programs. The skill of accompanying is unique in ensemble performance. This program is designed to
reward one outstanding student keyboard accompanist in each of Berks County’s senior high schools
who is skillful, diligent, and available as a keyboard accompanist and generally supportive of his or her
school music program.
RMF “Project Penske” Jazz Musicianship Award ($100) - Open to Middle & High School Students
An RMF “Project Penske” Jazz Musicianship Award is available each spring to one student in each
of Berks County’s school districts who best exemplifies the creativity, skill in improvisation or jazz
composition, respect for musical ensemble, virtuosity if a performer, and zeal to participate actively in the
preservation and development of jazz that are characteristic of a jazz musician.
Oboe & Harp
Phyllis Peters Memorializes a Partnership in Music and in Life
In response to RMF’s scholarship match last
year, Phyllis Ensher Peters, a local harp soloist
and teacher, has established the Solomon Frank
and Phyllis Ensher Peters Scholarship Fund to
benefit students in grades 7 through 11 who
play either the oboe or the harp as a principal
instrument, reside in Berks County, and attend a
public or private school in Berks County or are
home-schooled. The program offers two different
awards.
Those awards will help students of oboe or
harp finance instrument upgrades and participate
in summer music camp. Financial need will be
relevant to each award. Instrument upgrades on
oboe or harp will be available exclusively upon
recommendation of the student’s teacher of the
instrument. RMF’s Scholarship Committee will
administer awards of both types.
A Florida native, Solomon Frank Peters, Jr.
and Phyllis, a native of Massachusetts, met while
serving together in the library of the Curtis
Institute of Music, from which both graduated
with certificates in performance. Frank’s oboe
teachers at Curtis were Marcel Tabuteau and John
de Lancie, who became the Institute’s Director in
1977. Phyllis studied harp with Carlos Salzedo.
Phyllis’ mother directed Phyllis to the harp
because it was not a popular instrument.
Frank and Phyllis Peters in 1991
8 • NewS of Note • fALL 008
Upon graduation from Curtis, both Frank and
Phyllis joined the Halifax Symphony Orchestra
in Nova Scotia and began recording with the
Canadian Broadcasting Company. In 1962, they
married and Frank entered Dalhousie University
in Halifax to study electrical engineering, ending
his career in music. He earned both baccalaureate
and master’s degrees at Dalhousie.
Phyllis continued to perform with the Halifax
Symphony and CBC while Frank attended school
and worked for Hermes Electronics. The couple’s
only child, Ariana, was born in 1973. In 1976,
when the Halifax Symphony was faltering and
CBC was changing its programming, Frank took
an engineering job in Florida. Phyllis performed
with several orchestras in Florida, one of which
was then conducted by Sidney Rothstein.
The family moved to Reading when Frank was
offered a job at Bell Labs in 1986. Encouraged
by her sister, who then resided in Binghamton,
New York, Phyllis quickly earned employment
with the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra,
the Tri-Cities Opera, and the Broome County
Pops, which has since merged into the BPO. She
continues those affiliations.
When Frank died in 1998, Phyllis looked for
an appropriate legacy to recognize the interest
they first shared. She was drawn to RMF because
she admires “any organization that inspires a
love of music in young children, and the Reading
Musical Foundation does that.” She reflects upon
the words of her harp teacher at Curtis, Carlos
Salzedo, that “The harp is to music what music
is to life,” believing that music conveys what
words cannot and that any instrument, including
the human voice, can be the means of that
communication and a wellspring of inspiration to
children.
Phyllis performs locally with the Reading
Pops and is a popular soloist at weddings, dinner
parties, and other special events, often in company
with flutist Cindy Miller-Aungst.
Young (and Older!) Musicians Blossom During 2008 BSBI
record 319 musicians enrolled in the 2008
A Berks Summer Band Institute hosted by Ken
Kemmerer of the Muhlenberg School District’s
music faculty. RMF has sponsored the Institute
since its inception in 2004. Representing 15
public school districts and three parochial schools
in Berks County, participants rehearsed weekly
for two months and gave a concert on August
13. Also participating were 22 adults, students
from three colleges, and four interns who are
college music majors. The interns this year were
Brian Buterbaugh (Penn State), Amy Kleinsmith
(Ithaca), Angela Lattanzio (West Chester), and
Melanie Young (Kutztown).
The Institute is designed to give young
instrumentalists incentive to practice during the
summer and the chance to sample concert band
literature they have not yet played in their home
school districts. Assisting Ken again this year
were Steve Holgate of the Governor Mifflin
School District, and Brian Holt, one of the region’s
preeminent percussionists and a member of The
Ringgold Band.
Students are divided into four ensembles based
upon their years of experience in concert band.
Richard C. Ecks, a
Reading native who
witnessed the liberation of
a German concentration
camp while serving in the
United States Army during
World War II, also served
his community, through
music.
Choral Society for 25
years, Mr. Ecks sang in his church choir at First
He gave his entire estate to the Reading
a piece at the concert. RMF awards engraved
Mollard conducting batons to all interns who
complete the program.
With barely any advertising, the Institute
attracted nearly 180 participants in its first
summer. Enrollment mushroomed to 284 the
following summer and exceeded 300 in 2006.
A Legacy in Music: RMF Receives Bequest from Richard Ecks
Orchestra, in equal shares, at his death on
December 9, 2007. Mr. Ecks regularly attended
concerts by the RSO. He asked that his late sister,
Adeline Ecks, share credit for his generosity.
RMF learned of the bequest from Mr. Ecks’
attorney and executrix, Patricia H. Frankel, who
explained her former client’s background, love of
music, and commitment to the Reading Musical
Foundation.
Richard Ecks’ legacy will generate nearly $2,500
each year to support the Foundation’s extensive
programs in music education and music outreach
throughout Berks County. It represents the purest
form of selfless generosity – gifts through music
for children and their families who never met the
source. - C. Thomas Work
week away from home, friends, a newfound
A love for music…who wouldn’t fall in love
with summer music camp? The Reading Musical
Foundation sent 53 students to music camp
this year. Now hitting the five-year mark, the
summer camp scholarship program continues to
be one of the most successful and life-changing
opportunities the Foundation offers the county’s
student musicians.
“I took away a lot from music camp. The friends
and memories will leave a lasting impression on
my future musical experiences. I’m so pumped for
this year and how I will apply what I learned to
my music,” said Ed Dorner, a Music Educators of
Berks County camp recipient.
Comments like this convince RMF’s Scholarship
Committee that the summer program is
something special. These excited, motivated
musicians return to Berks County eager to play
and eager to learn, a wonderful combination for
any school music teacher.
The Reading Musical Foundation is able to
offer the summer camp scholarship program
through established scholarship funds, programs
with summer camp scholarship restrictions, and
generous individuals who donate summer camp
fellowships. Many students are able to receive
instrument instruction in school, but coupled
with instrumental fees and private lessons, a lot
of family budgets can’t squeeze out summer camp
tuition as well. These are the families for whom the
summer camp scholarship program was formed.
At Penn State’s music camp, I learned a great
deal about the piano under the instruction of Dr.
Timothy Shafer and Dr. Steven Smith. Overall, the
experience was very enjoyable and educational.
The teachers were incredible, talent was abundant
and there was a real love for music.
The special individuals who established funds and
give fellowships have given more than just dollars.
They have given an experience that can never be
taken away and memories that will last a lifetime.
The following pages feature pictures, stories
and lessons learned at numerous camps across
the country. Take a moment to share in their
excitement - it resonates off the pages!
We had each class every day in one-hour sessions.
Each class was a lot of fun and taught me essential
skills that I can now apply to music knowledge.
I also loved having free time to play Ultimate
Frisbee and meet new people. Penn State Music
Camp was an awesome experience.
No other musical activity has required me to use
all my musical talent and theory knowledge as
extensively as this camp. I learned so many new
things it was almost overwhelming.
Kyle, Scheidt-Heslop Jazz Program Camp recipient
I lived more and learned more that week than all
those years of choir and music class combined.
Every day since I’ve been wishing I could have
brought everybody I met back home with me. I
miss all the crazy practices, hearing songs everywhere
I went, knowing that we were all connected
by one common love - music.
I had a wonderful time at Suzuki camp. I learned a
lot about expression and feeling by describing the
sections of the piece. I can now use these skills to
play with more expression and get into the music.
I was among 450 other high school students who
were attending camp with high expectations of
becoming a drum major. Although I struggled with
many of the technique items, I discovered that the
staff was very helpful. They were always willing
to help out in any way, and many of them formed
personal relationships with me. Not only was the
staff kind, the directors of the academy were
extremely helpful. George Parks was so much fun,
and even though we were outside on one of the
hottest days, he had such a great personality that
he would make you want to come and learn everything
he was teaching without complaining.
This summer was one of the best summers I have
ever had. I learned so much musically. We played
the third and fourth movements of Shostakovich’s
tenth symphony...the audience loved us!
This trip with Sound of America was so incredible,
and I would not trade it for anything. I made so
many great friends that I know I’ll stay in touch
with, and we’re already planning a reunion! I
learned so much about other cultures and customs,
but I also learned to appreciate the free restrooms
in the US!
Now that camp is over, I feel more
confidence to sing in front of people,
and I am not afraid to sing loud and
proud when I know the song!
for longer periods of time, with a better
sound.
I chose to spend a week in July at
the Penn State Summer Music Camp.
Throughout the course of the week I
attended classes taught by some of the
finest teachers with whom I have ever
studied. Each one was a master of his
own musical area and was very gifted
at conveying his thoughts.
The six weeks I spent at the Brevard Music Center
this summer were life-changing to say the least.
Because of my strong desire to become an orchestral
conductor, I was excited to hear that BMC
hired Keith Lockart (featured in photo), conductor
of the Boston Pops. This was possibly the best, most
fun, educational, musical, and most enriching summer
I’ve ever had.
Although I was very intimidated at first, by the time
the week was over, I was very upset about leaving.
The learning process was perfect for me, because
when they taught us how to conduct, we were
videotaped and then would be critiqued later in
a group. I think I was able to focus on them easier
than if I were told what to do without being able
to see it first-hand.
Sarah, VA Productions Drum Major Camp recipient
I was challenged to try new things on my violin that
I have never explored before. I learned how to
use chords, modes, and blue scales while improvising.
It was a weekend I will never forget!
This week was rewarding and challenging to me. I
was one of the best in my class at Southern Middle
School, but here I felt completely inferior. However,
I perfected my bow hold and now fully understand
the difference between sharps and flats. Camp,
along with my new private lessons awarded by
RMF, I’m hoping to prove that I’m worthy, and
knock some socks off, too! Thank you very much for
giving me this chance to grow and learn.
Each year, Phil Reno (Tony Award winning Broadway
director) brings with him to camp a Broadway
star to perform a concert for us. This year, he
brought Gavin Creel. Gavin played the lead role
in Thoroughly Modern Millie in its Broadway revival
a few years ago and received a Tony nomination
for his performance. His voice is truly remarkable
and cannot be described, only heard.
I had the time of my life at Show Choir Camps of
America this summer, and I did not want to leave.
Between working with amazing clinicians, the concerts,
and the group of friends I made, I could not
have spent that week doing anything better.
As an individual with little previous knowledge of
the fine craft of chamber music, this was a positive
and eye-opening experience. I learned the importance
of communication within an ensemble, musical
details are extremely important aspects of any
musical composition, and that music in any form is
truly a fascinating subject.
Words cannot describe how incredible studying
with Amy Porter was. Through her extensive
teaching program, my class and I were given two
years worth of college flute studies in two weeks.
Professor Porter pushed me forward and showed
me nothing is impossible.
Overall, the “Splash” camp at Pennsylvania Academy
of Music was a great learning experience. It
was neat to see all that was accomplished in one
week by people who love music and enjoy playing
music together.
