He helped to establish a Resident Composer program,
which has included such young composers as John
Adams, David del Tredici, and Tison Street. It remains
a vital part of the Marlboro experience, and recent years
have seen visits from György Kurtág, John Harbison,
George Benjamin, and Thomas Adès, among others.
“I remember that first night that I came to Marlboro, when these players were giving their all to this very
difficult work of Roger Sessions, the Viola Quintet, and the feeling of finding in this place, in the middle
of a forest, five individuals working so concentratedly and so unbelievably lovingly over this very, very
difficult work. That picture was the picture of Marlboro.” — Leon Kirchner
